Hollow Borosilicate Microspheres from Aqueous Solution

Abstract

Metastable aqueous borosilicate solutions may be processed to hollow microspheres by a combination of liquid feed atomization and thermal exposure. Techniques for feed preparation and the relationships between feed composition, stability and processibility are discussed. Optimization of feed atomization, hollow sphere formation and finishing operations are discussed relative to density, size, strength, and chemical durability properties of finished products. The connection between finished properties and product utility is presented for several applications including lightweight fillers for thermoset resins and vinyl plastisols, and physical sensitizers for emulsion explosives.
