Abstract

Abstract

Shipwrecks and their cargo are still prey to salvaging and commercialization activities that betray the ethical principles of cultural heritage preservation and research. Beneath a surface of compliance with methodological standards, professional involvement, governmental support, and public acclaim, the main motivation is economic profit, in many cases through the auctioning of non-renewable heritage resources. This paper presents a critical review of the principles that govern such activities, with a focus on shipwrecks and coin hoards. Based on ethical, epistemological, and technical considerations within archaeology, this paper proposes fundamental guidelines for a model focused on research and the recognition of the value and long-term conservation of the artifacts.
