We define the ‘linear scan transform' G of a set in ℝd using information observable on its one-dimensional linear transects. This transform determines the set covariance function, interpoint distance distribution, and (for convex sets) the chord length distribution. Many basic integral-geometric formulae used in stereology can be expressed as identities for G. We modify a construction of Waksman (1987) to construct a metric η for ‘regular' subsets of ℝd defined as the L1 distance between their linear scan transforms. For convex sets only, η is topologically equivalent to the Hausdorff metric. The set covariance function (of a generally non-convex set) depends continuously on its set argument, with respect to η and the uniform metric on covariance functions.

Johnson–Mehl tessellations can be considered as the results of spatial birth–growth processes. It is interesting to know when such a birth–growth process is completed within a bounded region. This paper deals with the limiting distributions of the time of completion for various models of Johnson–Mehl tessellations in ℝd and k-dimensional sectional tessellations, where 1 ≦ k < d, by considering asymptotic coverage probabilities of the corresponding Boolean models. Random fractals as the results of birth–growth processes are also discussed in order to show that a birth–growth process does not necessarily lead to a Johnson–Mehl tessellation.

A biphase image, representing the normal and degenerated fibres in a vertical cross-section of a nerve, is considered. A random set model based on a Gibbs point process is proposed for the union of the two phases. A kind of independence between the degeneration process and the original fibres is defined and tested.

Birth and death processes can be constructed as projections of higher-dimensional Poisson processes. The existence and uniqueness in the strong sense of the solutions of the time change problem are obtained. It is shown that the solution of the time change problem is equivalent to the solution of the corresponding martingale problem. Moreover, the processes obtained by the projection method are ergodic under translations.

A version of the Rao–Blackwell theorem is shown to apply to most, but not all, stereological sampling designs. Estimators based on random test grids typically have larger variance than quadrat estimators; random s-dimensional samples are worse than random r-dimensional samples for s < r. Furthermore, the standard stereological ratio estimators of different dimensions are canonically related to each other by the Rao–Blackwell process. However, there are realistic cases where sampling with a lower-dimensional probe increases efficiency. For example, estimators based on (conditionally) non-randomised test point grids may have smaller variance than quadrat estimators. Relative efficiency is related to issues in geostatistics and the theory of wide-sense stationary random fields. A uniform minimum variance unbiased estimator typically does not exist in our context.

We use the fact that the Palm measure of a stationary random measure is invariant to phase space change to generalize the light traffic formula initially obtained for stationary processes on a line to general spaces. This formula gives a first-order expansion for the expectation of a functional of the random measure when its intensity vanishes. This generalization leads to new algorithms for estimating gradients of functionals of geometrical random processes.

Guided by analogy with Euler's spherical excess formula, we define a finite-additive functional on bounded convex polygons in ℝ2 (the Euler functional). Under certain smoothness assumptions, we find some sufficient conditions when this functional can be extended to a planar signed measure. A dual reformulation of these conditions leads to signed measures in the space of lines in ℝ2. In this way we obtain two sets of conditions which ensure that a segment function corresponds to a signed measure in the space of lines. The latter conditions are also necessary.

A set-valued analog of the elementary renewal theorem for Minkowski sums of random closed sets is considered. The corresponding renewal function is defined as where are Minkowski (element-wise) sums of i.i.d. random compact convex sets. In this paper we determine the limit of H(tK)/t as t tends to infinity. For K containing the origin as an interior point, where hK(u) is the support function of K and is the set of all unit vectors u with EhA(u) > 0. Other set-valued generalizations of the renewal function are also suggested.

Let be a real-valued, homogeneous, and isotropic random field indexed in . When restricted to those indices with , the Euclidean length of , equal to r (a positive constant), then the random field resides on the surface of a sphere of radius r. Using a modified stratified spherical sampling plan (Brown (1993a)) on the sphere, define to be a realization of the random process and to be the cardinality of . A bootstrap algorithm is presented and conditions for strong uniform consistency of the bootstrap cumulative distribution function of the standardized sample mean, , are given. We illustrate the bootstrap algorithm with global land-area data.

The theory of geometric probabilities is concerned with randomly generated geometric objects. The aim is to compute probabilities of certain geometric events or distributions of random variables defined in a geometric way. Very often the computation even of simple expectations is too difficult, and one has to be satisfied with establishing estimates and, if possible, sharp inequalities. In geometric probabilities, convex sets play a prominent role, since often the convexity assumptions simplify the situation considerably. Extremal problems for geometric probabilities involving convex bodies can sometimes be attacked successfully by using suitable integral-geometric transformations and then applying classical inequalities from the geometry of convex bodies, or known methods for obtaining such inequalities. Examples of such results are the topic of this paper.

Formulas for anisotropic stereology of fibre and surface processes are presented. They concern the relation between second-order quantities of the original process and its projections and sections. Various mathematical tools for handling these formulas are presented, including stochastic optimization. Finally applications in stereology are discussed, relating to intensity estimators using anisotropic sampling designs. Variances of these estimators are expressed and evaluated for processes with the Poisson property.

Certain images arising in astrophysics and medicine are modelled as smooth random fields inside a fixed region, and experimenters are interested in the number of ‘peaks', or more generally, the topological structure of ‘hot-spots' present in such an image. This paper studies the Euler characteristic of the excursion set of a random field; the excursion set is the set of points where the image exceeds a fixed threshold, and the Euler characteristic counts the number of connected components in the excursion set minus the number of ‘holes'. For high thresholds the Euler characteristic is a measure of the number of peaks. The geometry of excursion sets has been studied by Adler (1981) who gives the expectation of two excursion set characteristics, called the DT (differential topology) and IG (integral geometry) characteristics, which equal the Euler characteristic provided the excursion set does not touch the boundary of the region. Worsley (1995) finds a boundary correction which gives the expectation of the Euler characteristic itself in two and three dimensions. The proof uses a representation of the Euler characteristic given by Hadwiger (1959). The purpose of this paper is to give a general result for any number of dimensions. The proof takes a different approach and uses a representation from Morse theory. Results are applied to the recently discovered anomalies in the cosmic microwave background radiation, thought to be the remnants of the creation of the universe.

Quite often in the statistical analysis of medical and biological problems, data are images corresponding to entire objects that include smaller objects within them. In these cases, we need models of random closed sets (RACS) confined to compact subsets of the plane. There is no room for stationarity hypotheses and the increase of statistical information comes from independent replicates of the same phenomena rather than increasing our sample window. We investigate practical methods of modelling RACS by means of circumscribed balls, leading to a natural definition of location, size and shape. We discuss the possibilities of using these random variables in order to define statistical spaces of RACS that will allow us to use maximum likelihood methods.

This paper considers a model for the spread of an epidemic in a closed population whose members are in either a high-risk or a low-risk activity group. Further, members of the high-risk group may change their behaviour by entering the low-risk group. Both stochastic and deterministic models are examined. A limiting model, appropriate when there is a large number of initially susceptible individuals, is used to provide a threshold analysis. The epidemic is compared to a single group epidemic, and to suitably parametrised two-group epidemics, using a coupling method. The total size distribution and effects of changing the behaviour change rate are considered.

We consider positive matrices Q, indexed by {1,2, …}. Assume that there exists a constant 1 L < ∞ and sequences u1< u2< · ·· and d1d2< · ·· such that Q(i, j) = 0 whenever i < ur < ur + L < j or i > dr + L > dr > j for some r. If Q satisfies some additional uniform irreducibility and aperiodicity assumptions, then for s > 0, Q has at most one positive s-harmonic function and at most one s-invariant measure µ. We use this result to show that if Q is also substochastic, then it has the strong ratio limit property, that is

for a suitable R and some R–1-harmonic function f and R–1-invariant measure µ. Under additional conditions µ can be taken as a probability measure on {1,2, …} and exists. An example shows that this limit may fail to exist if Q does not satisfy the restrictions imposed above, even though Q may have a minimal normalized quasi-stationary distribution (i.e. a probability measure µ for which R–1µ = µQ).

The results have an immediate interpretation for Markov chains on {0,1,2, …} with 0 as an absorbing state. They give ratio limit theorems for such a chain, conditioned on not yet being absorbed at 0 by time n.

Unlike the means of distributions on a euclidean space, it is not entirely clear how one should define the means of distributions on the size-and-shape or shape spaces of k labelled points in ℝm since these spaces are all curved. In this paper, we discuss, from a shape-theoretic point of view, some questions which arise in practice while using procrustean methods to define mean size-and-shapes or shapes. We obtain sufficient conditions for such means to be unique and for the corresponding generalized procrustean algorithms to converge to them. These conditions involve the curvature of the size-and-shape or shape spaces and are much less restrictive than asking for the data to be concentrated.

The corpuscle problem of Wicksell is discussed. We give a numerical quadrature of Gauss–Chebyshev type for Wicksell's integral equation which combines a size distribution of discs on a sectional plane with that of spheres. We also give an estimation procedure of three-dimensional size distributions based on this quadrature and examine its theoretical properties. In practice, we need a smoothing technique for empirical distribution functions before applying this estimator. Simulation results are given. Our idea also is applied to the thick section case and an analysis of microscopic data is given.
