35 There were rumours in the press in Feb. 1937 that Headlam was interested in the vacancy in the English Universities seat; although he does not appear to have been seeking this, the reports led him to contact the chairman of the Conservative association, but it was clear that they already had a candidate in mind.

36 After rejection by Richmond he wrote a caustic reply on these lines, and sent a copy to Hacking, the Party Chairman; this was perhaps unwise, although the party leadership were publicly opposed to the worst practices of auctioning seats to the highest bidder: Headlam diary, 25 Jan. 1937.
