Machine learning’s integration into reliability analysis holds substantial potential to ensure infrastructure safety. Despite the merits of flexible tree structure and formulable expression, random forest (RF) and evolutionary polynomial regression (EPR) cannot contribute to reliability-based design due to absent uncertainty quantification (UQ), thus hampering broader applications. This study introduces quantile regression and variational inference (VI), tailored to RF and EPR for UQ, respectively, and explores their capability in identifying material indices. Specifically, quantile-based RF (QRF) quantifies uncertainty by weighting the distribution of observations in leaf nodes, while VI-based EPR (VIEPR) works by approximating the parametric posterior distribution of coefficients in polynomials. The compression index of clays is taken as an exemplar to develop models, which are compared in terms of accuracy and reliability, and also with deterministic counterparts. The results indicate that QRF outperforms VIEPR, exhibiting higher accuracy and confidence in UQ. In the regions of sparse data, predicted uncertainty becomes larger as errors increase, demonstrating the validity of UQ. The generalization ability of QRF is further verified on a new creep index database. The proposed uncertainty-incorporated modeling approaches are available under diverse preferences and possess significant prospects in broad scientific computing domains.

This article examines how the British colonial administration and the local Chinese population interacted around the issue of obscene prints in 1900s–1930s Singapore, with a particular focus on the policing of the female nude. The notion of obscenity acquired different meanings as prints crossed geographical, cultural, and linguistic boundaries. What was deemed ‘obscene’ in Republican Shanghai or Edwardian London was not necessarily viewed the same way in colonial Singapore, and vice versa. By tracing the contradictory assumptions about the relationship between nudity and obscenity in a multiracial and multicultural colonial context, this article demonstrates that obscenity regulation in Singapore was intimately tied to what Partha Chatterjee has termed ‘the rule of colonial difference’,1 with race being the most obvious marker of difference. On an institutional level, the rule of colonial difference led to a division of regulatory labour that ultimately rendered Chinese salacious materials invisible to the British colonial government in the early twentieth century. In terms of definitions of nudity and obscenity, perceived racial–cultural differences—central to the rule of colonial difference—were used both to justify and to contest the public display of naked female bodies to non-Western audiences. This situates the Singapore case within the broader scholarship on obscenity regulation and colonialism, and offers fresh insights into the difference in imperial models of obscenity regulation. By exploring how obscenity regulation was premised on the process of racial ‘othering’, this article also highlights race as an underexplored factor in existing scholarship on obscenity regulation.

In the contemporary maritime industry, characterised by intense competition, reduced visibility due to heavy fog is a primary cause of accidents, significantly impairing maritime operational efficiency. Consequently, investigating foggy weather navigation safety holds crucial practical significance. This paper, through an analysis and synthesis of various aspects of foggy navigation technology, including foggy navigation regulations at different ports, fog warnings, foggy vessel environmental perception and foggy auxiliary navigation systems, explores the key issues concerning vessel navigation during foggy conditions from a scientific perspective. This discussion encompasses the aspects of regulatory frameworks, standardisation, and the development of intelligent and responsive onboard equipment. Finally, the paper offers a glimpse into potential strategies for fog navigation.

Many real-world intertemporal decisions involve a group of two or more individuals making consensual decisions through group collaboration. Here, we ask how group collaboration affects intertemporal choices. In two experiments, participants completed intertemporal choices individually first (the precollaboration phase). Then, participants were placed into groups of two or three and completed a similar intertemporal task, with the group arriving at a consensual decision on each trial (the group collaboration phase). Finally, participants once again completed the intertemporal choices individually (the postcollaboration phase). Results showed that after group collaboration, the delay discounting significantly decreased compared to before collaboration both at group level and at individual level. The effect of group collaboration on individual intertemporal choices was no longer discernible by 1 week later. Therefore, the current research demonstrates the effectiveness of group collaboration and provides a way to nudge both groups and individuals to make farsighted choices.

Although the interaction between microswimmers and walls during near-wall swimming has been extensively studied, the effect of microswimmer shapes and slip boundary conditions on the dynamic characteristics of near-wall microswimmers has received less attention. In this study, elliptical microswimmer models have been developed with various aspect ratios based on circular microswimmers. The lattice Boltzmann method has been used for the numerical simulation of the dynamic behaviour of microswimmers near walls. Under slip boundary conditions, the escape or capture of microswimmers by the walls is influenced by the swimming Reynolds number (Res), wall slip length (ls) and the aspect ratio (Cab) of a microswimmer. Changes in the Cab value of a microswimmer considerably affect its swimming state, especially for puller-type microswimmers. The tendency of pullers to be captured by the wall increases with increasing Cab. Moreover, changes in ls within the slip boundary condition of a puller can induce a transition in its movement state from a wall oscillation state to a stable sliding state and eventually to a wall lock-up state, a process influenced by the Cab value of the puller. Pusher-type microswimmers show a considerably increased tendency to escape from walls with increasing Cab and no wall lock-up state is observed, which is opposite to the case of pullers. Pushers and pullers show an increased tendency to be captured by the wall with increasing initial swimming angle of the microswimmer. The findings of this study enhance our understanding of the swimming patterns of natural microswimmers near walls and are of substantial importance for the design of artificial microswimmers and microfluidic devices.

Cryogenic carbon capture (CCC) is an innovative technology to desublimate $\text {CO}_2$ out of industrial flue gases. A comprehensive understanding of $\text {CO}_2$ desublimation and sublimation is essential for widespread application of CCC, which is highly challenging due to the complex physics behind. In this work, a lattice Boltzmann (LB) model is proposed to study $\text {CO}_2$ desublimation and sublimation for different operating conditions, including the bed temperature (subcooling degree $\Delta T_s$), gas feed rate (Péclet number $Pe $) and bed porosity ($\psi$). The $\text {CO}_2$ desublimation and sublimation properties are reproduced. Interactions between convective $\text {CO}_2$ supply and desublimation/sublimation intensity are analysed. In the single-grain case, $Pe $ is suggested to exceed a critical value $Pe _c$ at each $\Delta T_s$ to avoid the convection-limited regime. Beyond $Pe _c$, the $\text {CO}_2$ capture rate ($v_c$) grows monotonically with $\Delta T_s$, indicating a desublimation-limited regime. In the packed bed case, multiple grains render the convective $\text {CO}_2$ supply insufficient and make CCC operate under the convection-limited mechanism. Besides, in small-$\Delta T_s$ and high-$Pe $ tests, $\text {CO}_2$ desublimation becomes insufficient compared with convective $\text {CO}_2$ supply, thus introducing the desublimation-limited regime with severe $\text {CO}_2$ capture capacity loss ($\eta _d$). Moreover, large $\psi$ enhances gas mobility while decreasing cold grain volume. A moderate porosity $\psi _c$ is recommended for improving the $\text {CO}_2$ capture performance. By analysing $v_c$ and $\eta _d$, regime diagrams are proposed in $\Delta T_s$–$Pe $ space to show distributions of convection-limited and desublimation-limited regimes, thus suggesting optimal conditions for efficient $\text {CO}_2$ capture. This work develops a viable LB model to examine CCC under extensive operating conditions, contributing to facilitating its application.

In 2017, Brosseau & Vlahovska (Phys. Rev. Lett, vol. 119, no. 3, 2017, p. 034501) found that, in a strong electric field, a weakly conductive, low-viscosity droplet immersed in a highly conductive, high-viscosity medium formed a lens shape, and liquid rings continuously detached from its equatorial plane and subsequently broke up into satellite droplets. This fascinating multiphase electrohydrodynamic (EHD) phenomenon is known as droplet equatorial streaming. In this paper, based on the unified lattice Boltzmann method framework proposed by Luo et al. (Phil. Trans. R. Soc. A Math. Phys. Engng Sci, vol. 379, no. 2208, 2021, p. 20200397), a novel lattice Boltzmann (LB) model is constructed for multiphase EHD by coupling the Allen–Cahn type of multiphase LB model and two new LB equations to solve the Poisson equation of the electric field and the conservation equation of the surface charge. Using the proposed LB model, we successfully reproduced, for the first time, the complete process of droplet equatorial streaming, including the continuous ejection and breakup of liquid rings on the equatorial plane. In addition, it is found that, under conditions of high electric field strength or significant electrical conductivity contrast, droplets exhibit fingering equatorial streaming that was unknown before. A power-law relationship is discovered for droplet total charge evolution and a theoretical model is then proposed to describe the droplet radius and height over time. The breakup of liquid rings is found to be dominated by capillary instability, while the breakup of liquid fingers is governed by the end-pinching mechanism. Finally, a phase diagram is constructed for fingering equatorial streaming and ring equatorial streaming, and a criterion equation is established for the phase boundary.

Background: Zilucoplan, a macrocyclic peptide complement component 5 inhibitor, sustained efficacy for up to 60 weeks of treatment, with a favourable safety profile in patients with acetylcholine receptor autoantibody-positive generalised myasthenia gravis in an interim analysis of RAISE-XT (NCT04225871). We evaluate the safety and efficacy of zilucoplan up to 96 weeks. Methods: RAISE-XT, a Phase 3, multicentre, open-label extension study, included patients who participated in the double-blind Phase 2 (NCT03315130) and Phase 3 (NCT04115293) zilucoplan studies. Patients self-administered daily subcutaneous zilucoplan 0.3mg/kg injections. Primary outcome was incidence of treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs). Secondary outcomes included change from baseline in Myasthenia Gravis Activities of Daily Living (MG-ADL) score. Results: At data cut-off (11 May 2023), median (range) exposure to zilucoplan was 1.8 (0.11–5.1) years (N=200). TEAEs occurred in 191 (95.5%) patients; the most common TEAE was COVID-19 (n=64; 32.0%). At Week 96, mean (standard error) change in MG-ADL score from double-blind study baseline was –6.33 (0.49) and –7.83 (0.60) for patients who received zilucoplan 0.3mg/kg and placebo in the double-blind studies, respectively. Conclusions: Zilucoplan demonstrated a favourable long-term safety profile. Efficacy was sustained for 96 weeks in patients who had previously received zilucoplan and who switched from placebo.

Background: In the Phase 3 RAISE study (NCT04115293), zilucoplan significantly improved MG-specific outcomes in patients with acetylcholine receptor autoantibody-positive generalised MG. After the first 12 weeks of the open-label extension study, RAISE-XT (NCT04225871), corticosteroid dose could be changed per the investigator’s discretion. We evaluate changes in corticosteroid dose during treatment with zilucoplan in RAISE-XT. Methods: In RAISE-XT, adults who completed the Phase 2 or RAISE studies (N=200) self-administered daily subcutaneous zilucoplan 0.3mg/kg, either continuing with zilucoplan or switching from placebo. Primary outcome was incidence of treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs). We assessed (post-hoc) the proportion of patients who discontinued/reduced or increased corticosteroid dose relative to double-blind baseline up to Week 60. Results: At Week 60, 30% (n=18/60) and 22% (n=12/54) of patients receiving corticosteroids in the zilucoplan and placebo-switch groups, respectively, reduced/discontinued corticosteroids (mean dose reductions: 14mg and 16mg; mean [SD] CFB in MG-ADL scores: -5.00 [3.96] and -5.67 [6.89]. 12% (n=7/60) and 7% (n=4/54) of patients in the zilucoplan and placebo-switch groups, respectively, increased corticosteroid dose (~12mg mean increase in both groups). TEAEs occurred in 188 (94.0%) patients (data cut-off: 08 September 2022). Conclusions: While receiving zilucoplan, discontinuation or dose reduction in concomitant corticosteroids was possible with maintained efficacy.

Background: Efgartigimod is a human IgG1 antibody Fc fragment recently approved by Health Canada for patients with acetylcholine receptor antibody positive (AChR-Ab+) generalized myasthenia gravis (gMG). We assessed cost-effectiveness of efgartigimod vs chronic IVIg for adult patients with AChR-Ab+ gMG. Methods: A Markov model estimated costs (treatment and administration, disease monitoring, complications from chronic corticosteroid use, exacerbation and crisis management, adverse events, end-of-life care) and benefits (quality-adjusted life-years [QALYs]). The analysis was conducted from the Canadian healthcare system perspective. Health state transition probabilities were estimated using data from ADAPT, ADAPT+, and a network meta-analysis comparing efgartigimod with chronic IVIg. Utility values were obtained from MyRealWorld MG. Patients with MG-ADL ≥5 who did not die/discontinue were assumed to receive treatment every 4 weeks or every 3 weeks over the lifetime horizon. Results: Over the lifetime horizon, efgartigimod and chronic IVIg were predicted to have total discounted QALYs of 16.80 and 13.35, and total discounted costs of $1,913,294 and $2,170,315, respectively. Efgartigimod dominated chronic IVIg with incremental QALYs of 3.45 and cost savings of $257,020 over the lifetime horizon. Conclusions: Efgartigimod may provide greater benefit at lower costs than chronic IVIg for Canadian patients with AChR-Ab+ gMG, with substantial healthcare system savings over the lifetime horizon.

Power scaling in conventional broad-area (BA) lasers often leads to the operation of higher-order lateral modes, resulting in a multiple-lobe far-field profile with large divergence. Here, we report an advanced sawtooth waveguide (ASW) structure integrated onto a wide ridge waveguide. It strategically enhances the loss difference between higher-order modes and the fundamental mode, thereby facilitating high-power narrow-beam emission. Both optical simulations and experimental results illustrate the significant increase in additional scattering loss of the higher-order modes. The optimized ASW lasers achieve an impressive output power of 1.1 W at 4.6 A at room temperature, accompanied by a minimal full width at half maximum lateral divergence angle of 4.91°. Notably, the far-field divergence is reduced from 19.61° to 11.39° at the saturation current, showcasing a remarkable 42% improvement compared to conventional BA lasers. Moreover, the current dependence of divergence has been effectively improved by 38%, further confirming the consistent and effective lateral mode control capability offered by our design.

The literature investigates trade-environment relationship at the firm level, but does not focus on the environmental effect of trade policy uncertainty. In the context of de-globalization and Sino-US trade friction, trade policy uncertainty significantly increases. How does trade policy uncertainty affect firms’ pollution emissions? In this study, we incorporate energy, pollution, and trade policy uncertainty into Melitz’s (2003) framework and construct a theoretical model to reveal the relationship between trade policy uncertainty and pollution emissions. Then, we employ the event that the USA granted permanent normal trade relationship to China as a quasi natural experiment. We use difference-in-difference-in-difference model and the data of Chinese manufacturing firms for empirical analysis. Our results indicate that the decrease in trade policy uncertainty reduces emission intensity of exporting firms, but has no significant impact on emission levels. Given that these firms do not aggravate emission levels under the condition of expanding output scale, we conclude that the decrease in trade policy uncertainty can improve environmental performance. Mechanism analysis shows an interesting finding that the decrease in trade policy uncertainty reduces emission intensity mainly by improving energy efficiency rather than improving abatement technology and optimizing energy structure. In addition, pollution reductions mainly occur in pollution-intensive and capital-intensive industries as well as coastal regions. Altogether, this study contributes to the literature on trade-environment relationship and trade policy uncertainty.

We demonstrate a continuous-wave (CW) Nd:YVO4-potassium gadolinium tungstate (KGW) intracavity Raman laser with a diode-to-Stokes optical efficiency of 34.2%. By optimizing the cavity arrangement and reducing the cavity losses, 8.47 W Stokes output at 1177 nm was obtained under an incident 878.6 nm diode pump power of 24.8 W. The influence of cavity losses on the power and efficiency of the CW Raman laser, as well as the potential for further optimization, was investigated based on the numerical model. The observation of thermally-induced output rollover was well explained by the calculation of the thermal lensing and cavity stability, indicating that the end-face curvature played an important role when the end-face of the crystal was highly reflective coated to make the cavity. A 10.9 W Stokes output under 40.9 W incident pump was also demonstrated with a cavity arrangement less sensitive to the end-face curvature, which is the highest output power of CW intracavity Raman lasers reported.

We searched PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, The Cochrane Library, China Biomedical Literature Database and other databases from inception to June 2023. The included studies were randomised controlled trials (RCT). The studies were screened by four authors, divided into two independent pairs. A total of eighteen studies were included, including 1362 patients, involving twelve intervention measures. The different nutrients had a significant effect on improving blood glucose, reducing inflammation levels and reducing oxidative stress compared with placebo (P < 0.05). Cumulative probability ranking showed that vitamin A + vitamin D + vitamin E ranked first in lowering fasting blood glucose (standardised mean difference (SMD) = 41.30, 95 % CI (2.07, 825.60)) and postprandial 2-h blood glucose (SMD = 15.19, 95 % CI (4.16, 55.53)). In terms of insulin resistance index, the first highest probability ranking is vitamin D (SMD = 5.12, 95 % CI (0.76, 34.54)). In terms of reducing the high-sensitivity C-reactive protein level, the first in probability ranking is VE (SMD = 2.58, 95 % CI (1.87,3.55)). The results of cumulative probability ranking showed that Mg + Zn + Ca + VD ranked first in reducing TNF-α (SMD = 1.90, 95% CI (0.40, 9.08)) and IL-6 (SMD = 1.83, 95 % CI (0.37, 9.12)). In terms of reducing malondialdehyde levels, the first ranked probability is VB1 (SMD = 4.99, 95 % CI (1.85, 13.46)). Cumulative probability ranking results showed that Ca + VD ranked first in reducing total antioxidant capacity (SMD = 0.66,95 % CI (0.38, 1.15)) and glutathione (SMD = 1.39, 95 % CI (0.43, 4.56)). In conclusion, nutritional interventions have significant effects on improving blood glucose, inflammatory levels and oxidative stress in patients with gestational diabetes. Due to the high uncertainty in the results and differences in the number and quality of studies included, the reliability of the conclusions still needs to be validated by conducting large-sample, high-quality RCT studies.

Here, we report the generation of MeV alpha-particles from H-11B fusion initiated by laser-accelerated boron ions. Boron ions with maximum energy of 6 MeV and fluence of 109/MeV/sr@5 MeV were generated from 60 nm-thick self-supporting boron nanofoils irradiated by 1 J femtosecond pulses at an intensity of 1019 W/cm2. By bombarding secondary hydrogenous targets with the boron ions, 3 × 105/sr alpha-particles from H-11B fusion were registered, which is consistent with the theoretical yield calculated from the measured boron energy spectra. Our results demonstrated an alternative way toward ultrashort MeV alpha-particle sources employing compact femtosecond lasers. The ion acceleration and product measurement scheme are referential for the studies on the ion stopping power and cross section of the H-11B reaction in solid or plasma.

In order to provide a theoretical foundation for the utilization of tailings as supplementary cementitious materials, the pozzolanic activity of muscovite—a typical mineral phase in tailings—before and after mechanical activation was investigated. In this study, significant pozzolanic activity of muscovite was obtained as a result of the structural and morphological changes that were induced by mechanical activation. The activated muscovite that was obtained after mechanical activation for 160 min satisfies the requirements for use as an active supplementary cementitious material, and the main characteristics of the pozzolana were as follows: median particle size (D50) of 11.7 μm, BET specific surface area of 28.82 m2 g−1, relative crystallinity of 14.99%, and pozzolanic activity index of 94.36%. Continuous grinding led to a gradual reduction in the relative crystallinity and an increase in the pozzolanic activity index due to the dehydroxylation reaction induced by mechanical activation, which occurred despite the fact that the specific surface area showed a decreasing trend when the grinding time was prolonged. Mechanically activated muscovite exhibited the capacity to react with calcium hydroxide to form calcium silicate hydrate, which is a typical characteristic of pozzolana. This experimental study provided a theoretical basis for evaluating the pozzolanic activity of muscovite using mechanical activation.

The harm caused by mine tailings has become increasingly problematic in recent years, so efforts are needed to dispose of or reutilize them in environmentally friendly ways. The objective of the present study was to find out if the hydration properties of muscovite contained in mine tailings are suitable for it to be used as a pozzolan in cement, after undergoing mechanical activation. Aqueous suspensions of mechanically activated muscovite were blended with 10, 20, or 30 wt.% calcium oxide and then allowed to harden. The hardened paste samples were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) techniques. The results revealed that the mechanically activated muscovite exhibited pozzolanic reaction activity in the alkaline environment provided by calcium oxide, and the activated muscovite possessed a capacity to react with calcium hydroxide to form hydration products. The calcium oxide content affected significantly the quantities and kinds of hydration products, non-evaporable water content, and the compressive strength development of the paste samples. The hydration products of the 10% calcium oxide-activated, mechanically activated muscovite pastes were Al-containing hydrated calcium silicate (C-A-S-H) gel, stratlingite, and, upon addition of 20% and 30% calcium oxide, Ca-Al hydrotalcite-like (Ht) phases. The present study was helpful in evaluating the hydration properties of the mechanically activated muscovite and also provided a research basis for evaluating the hydration properties of mine tailings containing muscovite after mechanical activation. The results provided a theoretical basis for muscovite-containing mine tailings to be used as a cement additive, and was conducive to the large-scale utilization of mine tailings.
