The development of inhibitory control (IC) and working memory (WM) in preschool is linked to a multitude of cognitive, emotional, and social outcomes, including elementary school adjustment. Furthermore, there are both cognitive and socioemotional domains of IC and it is unclear if both are related to these outcomes in the same manner. Using a family study design, the present investigation examined preschoolers’ IC, WM and externalizing behavior problems, maternal depression and anxiety measured when the children were in preschool, and elementary school externalizing behaviors and child and family functioning. Families with two children between 2.5 and 5.5 years of age (n = 198; mean age = 3.88, SD = 1.04) completed online surveys and laboratory visits, as well as another online survey after the children entered elementary school. Both cognitive and emotional domains of preschool IC significantly predicted the externalizing and functioning aspects of adjustment in elementary school (but WM did not predict either). In addition, child age predicted functioning in elementary school, and maternal depression predicted externalizing in elementary school. These longitudinal results indicate that supporting both cognitive and emotional aspects of preschool IC can benefit adjustment in elementary school.

Background: After a transient ischemic attack (TIA) or minor stroke, the long-term risk of subsequent stroke is uncertain. Methods: Electronic databases were searched for observational studies reporting subsequent stroke during a minimum follow-up of 1 year in patients with TIA or minor stroke. Unpublished data on number of stroke events and exact person-time at risk contributed by all patients during discrete time intervals of follow-up were requested from the authors of included studies. This information was used to calculate the incidence of stroke in individual studies, and results across studies were pooled using random-effects meta-analysis. Results: Fifteen independent cohorts involving 129794 patients were included in the analysis. The pooled incidence rate of subsequent stroke per 100 person-years was 6.4 events in the first year and 2.0 events in the second through tenth years, with cumulative incidences of 14% at 5 years and 21% at 10 years. Based on 10 studies with information available on fatal stroke, the pooled case fatality rate of subsequent stroke was 9.5% (95% CI, 5.9 – 13.8). Conclusions: One in five patients is expected to experience a subsequent stroke within 10 years after a TIA or minor stroke, with every tenth patient expected to die from their subsequent stroke.

We study hermitian operators and isometries on spaces of vector-valued Lipschitz maps with the sum norm. There are two main theorems in this paper. Firstly, we prove that every hermitian operator on $\operatorname {Lip}(X,E)$, where E is a complex Banach space, is a generalized composition operator. Secondly, we give a complete description of unital surjective complex linear isometries on $\operatorname {Lip}(X,\mathcal {A})$, where $\mathcal {A}$ is a unital factor $C^{*}$-algebra. These results improve previous results stated by the author.

In this article, we give a representation of bounded complex linear operators that preserve idempotent elements on the Fourier algebra of a locally compact group. When such an operator is, moreover, positive or contractive, we show that the operator is induced by either a continuous group homomorphism or a continuous group antihomomorphism. If the groups are totally disconnected, bounded homomorphisms on the Fourier algebra can be realized by the idempotent preserving operators.

Photonic quantum memories are required in many applications in quantum information science with varying performance requirements depending on specific applications. Although classical light storage has been demonstrated in time scales of minutes (Dudin et al., 2013; Heinze et al., 2013) to hours (Ma et al., 2021) in different systems, storing true single photons and single photon level coherent pulses are still limited to around a few seconds at most (Wang et al., 2021; Ortu et al., 2022; Hain et al., 2022; Stas et al., 2022). In this question, we would like to explore what the challenges for quantum memory storage for the purposes of quantum communication and the distribution of entanglement are, e.g. in quantum repeaters. Furthermore, recent work has proposed using quantum memories with hour-long storage times for quantum computation (Gouzien and Sangouard, 2021) and physically transporting single photons for astronomical interferometry (Bland-Hawthorn et al., 2021) and global quantum communications (Wittig et al., 2017; Gündoğan et al., 2023).

We obtained 24 air samples in 8 general wards temporarily converted into negative-pressure wards admitting coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) omicron variant BA.2.2 in Hong Kong. SARS-CoV-2 RNA was detected in 19 (79.2%) of 24 samples despite enhanced indoor air dilution. It is difficult to prevent airborne transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in hospitals.

The political connection between the state and firms in the context of China's corporate restructuring has been little explored. Using the clientelist framework and unpacking the incentives of both firms and the state, we analyse political connections as repeated patron–client exchanges where the politically connected firms can help the state fulfil its revenue imperative, serving as a failsafe for local authorities to ensure that upper-level tax quotas are met. Leveraging original surveys of the same Chinese firms over an 11-year period and the variations in their post-restructuring board composition, we find that restructured state-owned enterprises (SOEs) with political connections pay more tax than their assessed amount, independent of profits, in exchange for more preferential access to key inputs and policy opportunities controlled by the state. Examining taxes rather than profits also offers a new interpretation for why China continues to favour its remaining SOEs even when they are less profitable.

Observing high resolution optical to infrared spectra is crucial to understanding how energy is generated in galaxies. We present follow-up optical Keck-II/DEIMOS and infrared Keck-I/MOSFIRE spectra of ∼200 galaxies in the AKARI/North Ecliptic Pole Deep survey region at intermediate redshift. From rest-frame optical emission lines, we classify most of our objects as star-forming (53%), with the MIR selection favoring relatively massive galaxies (median log M/M⊙∼ 10.3). In addition, we combine our spectroscopic redshifts with UV to FIR photometry as inputs in order to model SEDs with CIGALE, and we measure the PAH 7.7 μm luminosity as an SFR indicator.

OBJECTIVES/SPECIFIC AIMS: About 75% of the estimated 2.5 million traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) diagnosed annually classify as mild TBI (mTBI); yet cognitive impairments associated with poor patient outcomes can persist for weeks to years. mTBI symptoms are difficult to measure objectively and often remain undiagnosed in the context of an unknown cognitive baseline. Formal neuropsychological exams hold limited utility due to their extensive resource burden. We aimed to define the clinical importance of a 4-question assessment of subjective cognitive complaints (SCC) in predicting return to work at 6 months following mTBI. METHODS/STUDY POPULATION: mTBI participants from the prospective Transforming Research and Clinical Knowledge in Traumatic Brain Injury Pilot Study were included. A self-report affirmation to at least 1 of 4 subjective cognitive symptoms yielded positive SCC. Regression analysis was used to determine factors associated with return to work by 6-months. RESULTS/ANTICIPATED RESULTS: Of 479 enrolled participants with mTBI, 271 (57%) had complete follow-up data. Of which, 156 (58%) had at least sheltered employment at enrollment. Thirty-four (22%) of workers had no return to work at 6-months. Demographics, prior education, presenting injury severity, work status, and post-traumatic stress disorder were associated with return to work. SCC was associated with lower odds of return to work by 6-months (OR=0.11, p=0.01). DISCUSSION/SIGNIFICANCE OF IMPACT: We suggest a concise 4-question assessment of SCC may be clinically relevant in estimating the likelihood of return to work by 6 months post-mTBI.
