The sensitivity of glacier mass balance to temperature and precipitation variations is crucial for informing models that simulate glaciers’ response to climate change. In this study, we simulate the glacier-wide mass balance of Mera Glacier with a surface energy-balance model, driven by in situ meteorological data, from 2016 to 2020. The analysis of the share of the energy fluxes of the glacier shows the radiative fluxes account for almost all the energy available during the melt season (May–October). However, turbulent fluxes are significant outside the monsoon (June–September). On an annual scale, melt is the dominant mass flux at all elevations, but 44% of the melt refreezes across the glacier. By reshuffling the available observations, we create 180 synthetic series of hourly meteorological forcings to force the model over a wide range of plausible climate conditions. A +1 (−1)°C change in temperature results in a −0.75 ± 0.17 (+0.93 ± 0.18) m w.e. change in glacier-wide mass balance and a +20 (−20)% change in precipitation results in a +0.52 ± 0.10 (−0.60 ± 0.11) m w.e. change. Our study highlights the need for physical-based approaches to produce consistent forcing datasets, and calls for more meteorological and glaciological measurements in High Mountain Asia.

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a leading cause of blindness in premature infants. The condition is associated with DHA deficiency. This study aimed to investigate the effect of DHA supplementation on the occurrence of ROP in infants receiving oral oil drops. It is part of the Joinville DHA study, a non-parallel-group cohort study conducted from March 2020 to January 2023 at a public maternity hospital in Brazil. Infants born before 33 weeks of gestational age or with a birth weight ≤ 1500 g were recruited. Among 155 infants, 81 did not receive and 74 received DHA supplementation until complete vascularisation of the peripheral retina. There was a higher incidence of infants with ROP in the unsupplemented group (58·6 %) compared with the DHA group (41·4 %), but this difference was NS (P = 0·22). Unadjusted logistic regression analysis showed that patent ductus arteriosus and neonatal corticosteroids were significantly (P < 0·05) associated with ROP in both groups. In the DHA group, surfactant use was also associated with ROP (P = 0·003). After adjusting for important covariates, patent ductus arteriosus and neonatal corticosteroids continued to be significant for infants in the unsupplemented group (OR = 3·99; P = 0·022 and OR = 5·64; P = 0·019, respectively). In the DHA group, only surfactant use continued to be associated with ROP (OR = 4·84; P = 0·015). In summary, DHA supplementation was not associated with ROP. Further studies are necessary to better understand the relationship between DHA supplementation, ROP and associated comorbidities.

Plasmodium vivax is the most frequent and widely distributed cause of recurring malaria. It is a public health issue that mostly occurs in Southeast Asia, followed by the Middle East, Latin, and South Americas and sub-Saharan Africa. Although it is commonly known as an etiologic agent of malaria with mild clinical manifestations, it can lead to severe complications. It has been neglected and understudied for a long time, due to its low mortality, culturing infeasibility, and mild clinical manifestations in comparison to P. falciparum. Despite the mild clinical issues commonly rose for P. vivax, the correlation between the clinical manifestations exhibited by patients with severe and non-severe complications and the genetic diversity of parasites responsible for the disease is not clear. An investigation was carried out between 2011 and 2021 on patients referred to Avicenne Hospital for suspected P. vivax infection. Upon arrival, they underwent clinical and biological examinations. The lateral flow test and LAMP-PCR confirmed the presence of malaria parasites, Plasmodium sp‥ Microscopic examination revealed the presence of Plasmodium parasites with a parasitaemia between 0.01 and 0.38%. Conventional PCR amplifications targeting 714 bp DNA fragment of small subunit ribosomal DNA (SSU-rDNA) followed by bidirectional sequencing allowed us to identify the parasites as P. vivax. The neighbor-joining (NJ) phylogenetic tree revealed that P. vivax sequences processed in the present study clustered in two well-differentiated and supported clades. It included a bigger clade including P. vivax specimens of all our patients together with homonymous sequences from Indonesia, India, and El Salvador and the second clade encompassed the sequences from Yemen and India. In addition, the clustering displayed by the median-joining network agreed well with the topology of the phylogenetic tree generated by the neighbor-joining analysis. No correlation between the clinical manifestation of patients with severe and non-severe complications, encompassing diverse geographical origins, and the genetic diversity of parasites was observed since all sequences demonstrated a high homogeneity. These findings can be helpful in getting knowledge about the population genetics of P. vivax and taking proper control management strategies against these parasites.

This paper describes the results from a project to obtain radiocarbon determinations from Early Bronze Age log coffin burials. Log coffins have been recognised as a burial tradition since antiquarian excavations uncovered the first examples. However, comparatively few are associated with radiocarbon determinations and many old determinations are very imprecise. To address this, seven log coffin burials were identified across England, and 11 samples from these were submitted for radiocarbon dating. The dates from the project were reviewed with previously obtained reliable determinations to reconsider the origins and development of the log coffin burial by region. The resulting study indicates that the earliest log coffins were associated with Beaker burials but that regional variations involving different rites soon developed.

Measuring surface mass-balance in the accumulation areas of glaciers is challenging because of the high spatial variability of snow accumulation and the difficulty of conducting annual field glaciological measurements. Here, we propose a method that can solve both these problems for many locations. Ground-penetrating radar measurements and firn cores extracted from a site in the French Alps were first used to reconstruct the topography of a buried end-of-summer snow horizon from a past year. Using these data and surface elevation observations from LiDAR and Global Navigation Satellite System instruments, we calculated the submergence velocities over the period between the buried horizon and more recent surface elevation observations. The differences between the changes in surface elevation and the submergence velocities were then used to calculate the annual surface mass-balances with an accuracy of ±0.34 m w.e. Assuming that the submergence velocities remain stable over several years, the surface mass-balance can be reconstructed for subsequent years from the differences in surface elevation alone. As opposed to the glaciological method that requires substantial fieldwork year after year to provide only point observations, this method, once submergence velocities have been calculated, requires only remote-sensing data to provide spatially distributed annual mass-balances in accumulation areas.

This project examines the local impact of Neolithic and Steppe population dispersals on archaeological cultures west of the Rhine, using new high-coverage ancient genomes from present-day Luxembourg. In addition, we sampled the Beaker-period grave of Dunstable Downs in England, which offers close parallels to the grave of Altwies in Luxembourg.

The term “blue justice” was coined in 2018 during the 3rd World Small-Scale Fisheries Congress. Since then, academic engagement with the concept has grown rapidly. This article reviews 5 years of blue justice scholarship and synthesizes some of the key perspectives, developments, and gaps. We then connect this literature to wider relevant debates by reviewing two key areas of research – first on blue injustices and second on grassroots resistance to these injustices. Much of the early scholarship on blue justice focused on injustices experienced by small-scale fishers in the context of the blue economy. In contrast, more recent writing and the empirical cases reviewed here suggest that intersecting forms of oppression render certain coastal individuals and groups vulnerable to blue injustices. These developments signal an expansion of the blue justice literature to a broader set of affected groups and underlying causes of injustice. Our review also suggests that while grassroots resistance efforts led by coastal communities have successfully stopped unfair exposure to environmental harms, preserved their livelihoods and ways of life, defended their culture and customary rights, renegotiated power distributions, and proposed alternative futures, these efforts have been underemphasized in the blue justice scholarship, and from marine and coastal literature more broadly. We conclude with some suggestions for understanding and supporting blue justice now and into the future.

Intuition and affect have been neglected topics in the literature on human judgment and decision making for a long time. Judgmental processes involved in risk perception and decision making have traditionally been conceptualized as cognitive in nature, being based upon a rational and deliberate evaluation of the alternatives at hand. This picture started to change in the early 1980s when decision researchers looked beyond rational, deliberate, and cognitive processes and began to investigate intuitive — as opposed to deliberate — and emotional — as opposed to cognitive — aspects of decision making.

Wetland archaeological sites offer excellent but vulnerable preservation conditions. This article presents examples of threats to such sites that may be enhanced, or diminished, by climate change, discusses methods for predicting and quantifying impacts, and examines what heritage managers can do to mitigate their effects. The consequences of climate change for wetland archaeological sites are likely to be severe and widespread but hard to predict and with significant local variation. At the same time, wetlands are increasingly acknowledged for their ability to sequester carbon and to mitigate climate change, prompting an increased focus on their protection that may also benefit wetland archaeology.

Drainage and spreading processes in thin liquid films have received considerable attention in the past decades. Yet, our understanding of three-dimensional cases remains sparse, with only a few studies focusing on flat and axisymmetric substrates. Here, we exploit differential geometry to understand the drainage and spreading of thin films on curved substrates, under the assumption of negligible surface tension and hydrostatic gravity effects. We develop a solution for the drainage on a local maximum of a generic substrate. We then investigate the role of geometry in defining the spatial thickness distribution via an asymptotic expansion in the vicinity of the maximum. Spheroids with a much larger (respectively smaller) height than the equatorial radius are characterized by an increasing (respectively decreasing) coating thickness when moving away from the pole. These thickness variations result from a competition between the variations of the substrate's slope and mean curvature. The coating of a torus presents larger thicknesses and a faster spreading on the inner region than on the outer region, owing to the different curvatures in these two regions. In the case of an ellipsoid with three different axes, spatial modulations in the drainage solution are observed as a consequence of a faster drainage along the short principal axis, faithfully reproduced by a three-dimensional asymptotic solution. Leveraging the conservation of mass, an analytical solution for the average spreading front is obtained. The solutions are in agreement with numerical simulations and experimental measurements obtained from the coating of a curing polymer on diverse substrates.

The increased availability of high-resolution and high-quality digital elevation models (DEMs) allows for the investigation of small-scale glaciological changes and improved precision in geodetic mass-balance estimates. However, high precision and careful methodological choices are required to retrieve glacier-wide mass changes at annual to seasonal time scales. Here, we used a 7-year time series of 12 DEMs of the Glacier d'Argentière, in the French Alps, derived from the Pléiades optical satellites to assess the ability of sub-metre stereoscopic satellite images to retrieve annual-to-seasonal mass balances. We found good agreement between the five annual and the four winter mass-balance values estimated using a geodetic method and those of in situ glaciological measurements: mean values via the geodetic method are −0.66 m w.e. and 1.47 m w.e. for annual and winter balances, respectively; mean absolute discrepancies are 0.25 m w.e. (annual) and 0.36 m w.e. (winter). Our study identified three main limitations of this methodology: (i) the intrinsic DEM precision; (ii) the lack of control over the satellite acquisition dates; and (iii) the density assumption. The consistency between the methods demonstrates the potential of short time-scale glacier mass-balance monitoring using very high-resolution satellite images.
