In the exercise of discretionary power there is no general duty to give reasons in the absence of a statutory requirement. This common law rule may be traced in part to a line of cases which.stand for the proposition that where the discretionary power of the administrator is conclusive as to the existence of the grounds for its exercise, the courts cannot scrutinise the reasons—any errors are within jurisdiction. For example in Allcroft v Lord Bishop of London the respondents argued that the reasons which the Bishop was required by the statute to state, disclosed irrelevant considerations. The House of Lords rejected an application for mandamus.

British left-wing politics does not know what to think about mothers. In left-wing women’s movements, motherhood has been recognised as essential and difficult; necessary for future revolutions, not least in raising future revolutionaries. In less radical circles, it has been understood as a crucial contribution to the functioning of society, often forming the basis of women’s claims to citizenship and maternalist forms of politics. On the other hand, motherhood has been seen as a ‘natural’ function of women and a private responsibility, rather than a public good or a collective act which needs comprehensive state support. The family, in this reading, is a rather conservative force, better left to social reactionaries. Mothering has added additional hurdles to the gendered obstacles women already face in pursuing politics as activists or elected representatives. Perhaps because of this, many mothers in politics have sought to downplay or distance themselves from their roles as mothers, emphasising instead their contributions as workers and activists who can be fully committed to the left cause. Feminist historians have often followed their lead and have tended to write around political mothers’ maternal roles in their scholarship. This roundtable develops themes first explored in our November 2023 workshop, generously supported by the Royal Historical Society.

Treating inertial measurement unit (IMU) measurements as inputs to a motion model and then preintegrating these measurements have almost become a de facto standard in many robotics applications. However, this approach has a few shortcomings. First, it conflates the IMU measurement noise with the underlying process noise. Second, it is unclear how the state will be propagated in the case of IMU measurement dropout. Third, it does not lend itself well to dealing with multiple high-rate sensors such as a lidar and an IMU or multiple asynchronous IMUs. In this paper, we compare treating an IMU as an input to a motion model against treating it as a measurement of the state in a continuous-time state estimation framework. We methodically compare the performance of these two approaches on a 1D simulation and show that they perform identically, assuming that each method’s hyperparameters have been tuned on a training set. We also provide results for our continuous-time lidar-inertial odometry in simulation and on the Newer College Dataset. In simulation, our approach exceeds the performance of an imu-as-input baseline during highly aggressive motion. On the Newer College Dataset, we demonstrate state-of-the art results. These results show that continuous-time techniques and the treatment of the IMU as a measurement of the state are promising areas of further research. The relation between perception and production in social meaning is often taken to be transparent, with social meaning associations learned from observations of language use. However, recent work has suggested that this relation is often more complex than previously thought. Here, we present new data comparing the social meaning of realized variable liaison in spoken French, couched within the framework of the pragmatic sociology of critique. We recall data from a recent matched guise experiment showing that listeners associate the realization of liaison with meanings like “professionalism”, specifically in social situations where efficacy and expertise are at issue. Basing ourselves on this finding, we use a production task, presenting these same social situations to amateur and professional actors. We find that our participants do not exploit the social meaning potential of variable liaison, producing liaison at lexically-determined rates on a par with previous corpus studies. We discuss this discrepancy between perception and production, which suggests that the link between the two is dependent on the linguistic variable under investigation.
