The fourth edition of Explaining the History of American Foreign Relations reconceptualizes this long-established classic to focus squarely on methods: not what we do, but how we do what we do. It presents revised, sharply focused essays on methods for researching national security, development, political economy, gender, religion, race, emotion, and nongovernmental organizations, alongside entirely new contributions on digital resources, spatial analysis, technology, materials, the natural world, the interaction of race and empire, US-Indigenous relations, ideology, and culture. Written by experts in the field, this text provides a modern introduction to three-dimensional dynamics for multibody systems. It covers rotation matrices, the twist-wrench formalism for multibody dynamics and Lagrangian dynamics, an approach that is often overlooked at the undergraduate level. The only prerequisites are differential equations and linear algebra as covered in a first-year engineering mathematics course. As managers digitize judgment using AI, their evaluations of persons risk imposing benefits and burdens in opaque and unaccountable ways. A wide range of harms may occur when access to one's personal data (and meaningful information about its use) is denied. Key data access rights and AI explainability guarantees in US. and EU law are designed to ameliorate the harms caused by irresponsible digitization, but their definition and range of application is contested. A robust policy evaluation framework will be needed to inform the proper level and scope of information access, as regulators clarify the contours of such rights and guarantees. By revealing the stakes of data access, this Element offers a useful evaluative framework for those interpreting and applying laws of data protection and AI explainability. English Phonetics and Phonology provides a detailed yet accessible foundational account of the science of speech sounds. Suitable for introductory courses, this textbook presents the key knowledge to comprehend the nature and function of consonant and vowel sounds as well as other characteristics of spoken language, such as stress, rhythm and intonation. With a focus on the sound system of English, examples from other languages are explored and included throughout, allowing students to better understand English sounds in contrast to these languages. Readers will discover what can be measured in speech and learn the basic functions of Praat. This hands-on-approach encourages students to make their own recordings and perform simple measurements to support their learning. While each of the fourteen chapters can be covered in one seminar, instructors can easily tailor them to fit 10–12 weeks of teaching in a phonetics or linguistics module. With no prior phonetic or linguistic knowledge needed, this textbook is suitable for first year undergraduate students, or anyone interested in developing a fundamental and sustained knowledge of the sound structure of the English language.

Rural areas in Africa are frequently located close to forests and habitats which are favourable for many dangerous endemic species of mammals and reptiles. Attacks by large animals and venomous bites and stings are environmental and occupational hazards, especially to rural agricultural workers and their families (Happold 1995).
The Puerto Rico Plain Pigeon Patagioenas inornata wetmorei suffered a severe population decline after hurricanes Irma and Maria in September 2017. We used distance sampling to estimate abundance (density and population size) in April–June 1986−2024, accounting for changes in detection probability. We used the distance-sampling abundance estimates to populate a Bayesian state–space logistic model and update posterior estimates of population carrying capacity, maximum population growth rate, population recovery time, and predicted abundance in April–June 2025−2034, accounting for observation and process variances. In addition, we used predicted abundance to assess potential extinction risk (probability Pr[N2025−2034 = 0|data]), population self-sustainability above 5,000 individuals (Pr[N2025−2034 >5,000|data]), and population surpassing the 2.5th percentile of carrying capacity (Pr[N2025−2034 >30,000|data]). The population has not recovered from the hurricanes, with estimated density averaging 0.0015 individuals/ha (bootstrapped standard error [SE] = 0.0006) and population size averaging 1,097 individuals (SE = 455) at the 749,000-ha survey region in April–June 2018−2024. Posterior mean estimates were 41,580 individuals (Markov Chain Monte Carlo standard deviation [SD] = 8,052) for population carrying capacity, 0.183 (SD = 0.056) for maximum population growth rate, six years (SD = 2) for recovery time, and 7,173 individuals (SD = 12,309) for predicted abundance in April–June 2025−2034. The population may reach self-sustainability levels (range Pr[N2025−2034 >5,000|data] = 0.326−0.631) but currently is undergoing a prolonged bottleneck and may become extinct (range Pr[N2025−2034 = 0|data] = 0.199−0.332), particularly if reproduction continues to be mostly unsuccessful, anthropogenic disturbances remain unabated, and on top of that another devastating hurricane makes landfall during the next 10 years. The Puerto Rico Plain Pigeon subspecies is in urgent need of management aiming to increase and maintain abundance above 5,000 individuals but preferably surpassing the 2.5th percentile of population carrying capacity as in the late 1990s (range Pr[N2025−2034 >30,000|data] = 0.000−0.181).

We present a new radio continuum study of the Large Magellanic Cloud supernova remnant (SNR) MCSNRJ0519–6902. With a diameter of ∼8 pc, this SNR shows a radio ring-like morphology with three bright regions toward the north, east, and south. Its linear polarisation is prominent with average values of 5 ± 1% and 6 ± 1% at 5500 and 9000 MHz, and we find a spectral index of –0.62 ± 0.02, typical of a young SNR. The average rotation measure is estimated at –124 ± 83 rad m–2 and the magnetic field strength at ∼ 11 μG. We also estimate an equipartition magnetic field of 72 ± 5 μG and minimum explosion energy of Emin = 2.6×1048 erg. Finally, we identified an H I cloud that may be associated with MCSNRJ0519–6902, located in the southeastern part of the remnant, along with a potential wind-bubble cavity.
The kinetic stability of collisionless, sloshing beam-ion ($45^\circ$ pitch angle) plasma is studied in a three-dimensional (3-D) simple magnetic mirror, mimicking the Wisconsin high-temperature superconductor axisymmetric mirror experiment. The collisional Fokker–Planck code CQL3D-m provides a slowing-down beam-ion distribution to initialize the kinetic-ion/fluid-electron code Hybrid-VPIC, which then simulates free plasma decay without external heating or fuelling. Over $1$–$10\;\mathrm{\unicode{x03BC} s}$, drift-cyclotron loss-cone (DCLC) modes grow and saturate in amplitude. The DCLC scatters ions to a marginally stable distribution with gas-dynamic rather than classical-mirror confinement. Sloshing ions can trap cool (low-energy) ions in an electrostatic potential well to stabilize DCLC, but DCLC itself does not scatter sloshing beam-ions into the said well. Instead, cool ions must come from external sources such as charge-exchange collisions with a low-density neutral population. Manually adding cool $\mathord {\sim } 1\;\mathrm{keV}$ ions improves beam-ion confinement several-fold in Hybrid-VPIC simulations, which qualitatively corroborates prior measurements from real mirror devices with sloshing ions.
The well-known $abc$-conjecture concerns triples $(a,b,c)$ of nonzero integers that are coprime and satisfy ${a+b+c=0}$. The strong n-conjecture is a generalisation to n summands where integer solutions of the equation ${a_1 + \cdots + a_n = 0}$ are considered such that the $a_i$ are pairwise coprime and satisfy a certain subsum condition. Ramaekers studied a variant of this conjecture with a slightly different set of conditions. He conjectured that in this setting the limit superior of the so-called qualities of the admissible solutions equals $1$ for any n. In this paper, we follow results of Konyagin and Browkin. We restrict to a smaller, and thus more demanding, set of solutions, and improve the known lower bounds on the limit superior: for ${n \geq 6}$ we achieve a lower bound of $\frac 54$; for odd $n \geq 5$ we even achieve $\frac 53$. In particular, Ramaekers’ conjecture is false for every ${n \ge 5}$.
Health insurers’ role in healthcare systems based on managed competition comprises various tasks. Misconceptions about these tasks may result in low public trust, which may hamper health insurers in performing their tasks. This study examines the relationship between enrollees’ perceptions of health insurers’ tasks and their trust in them.
Methods:
A questionnaire in November 2021 asked respondents to indicate to what extent health insurers have to perform certain tasks, whether they actually perform them, and whether they think these tasks are important. Trust was measured using a validated multiple-item scale. The results from 837 respondents (56 per cent response rate) were analysed using multivariate regression models.
Results:
A larger mismatch between enrollees’ expectations about health insurers’ tasks and their actual statutory tasks is related to less trust regarding the categories ‘controlling healthcare costs’ and ‘mediation and quality of care’. Second, a larger mismatch between expectations and actually performed tasks is related to less trust for all categories. Importance of tasks only affects this relationship concerning ‘informing about price and availability of care’.
Conclusions:
This study emphasises the importance of reducing enrollees’ misconceptions as trust in health insurers is necessary to fulfil their role as purchaser of care.
The brain’s default mode network (DMN) plays a role in social cognition, with altered DMN function being associated with social impairments across various neuropsychiatric disorders. However, the genetic basis linking sociability with DMN function remains underexplored. This study aimed to elucidate the shared genetics and causal relationship between sociability and DMN-related resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) traits.
Methods
We conducted a comprehensive genomic analysis using large-scale genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary statistics for sociability and 31 activity and 64 connectivity DMN-related rs-fMRI traits (N = 34,691–342,461). We performed global and local genetic correlations analyses and bi-directional Mendelian randomization (MR) to assess shared and causal effects. We prioritized genes influencing both sociability and rs-fMRI traits by combining expression quantitative trait loci MR analyses, the CELLECT framework – integrating single-nucleus RNA sequencing (snRNA-seq) data with GWAS – and network propagation within a protein–protein interaction network.
Results
Significant local genetic correlations were identified between sociability and two rs-fMRI traits, one representing spontaneous activity within the temporal cortex, the other representing connectivity between the cingulate and angular/temporal cortices. MR analyses suggested potential causal effects of sociability on 12 rs-fMRI traits. Seventeen genes were highly prioritized, with LINGO1, ELAVL2, and CTNND1 emerging as top candidates. Among these, DRD2 was also identified, serving as a robust internal validation of our approach.
Conclusions
By combining genomic and transcriptomic data, our gene prioritization strategy may serve as a blueprint for future studies. Our findings can guide further research into the biological mechanisms underlying sociability and its role in the development, prognosis, and treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders.
Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is often chronic and impairing. Mechanisms that maintain symptoms remain poorly understood because of heterogenous presentation. We parsed this heterogeneity by examining how individual differences in stress-symptom dynamics relate to the long-term maintenance of PTSD.
Methods
We studied 7,308 trauma-exposed World Trade Center responders who self-reported PTSD symptoms and stressful life events at annual monitoring visits for up to 20 years (average = 8.8 visits; [range = 4–16]). We used multilevel structural equation models to separate the stable and time-varying components of symptoms and stressors. At the within-person level, we modeled stress reactivity by cross-lagged associations between stress and future symptoms, stress generation by cross-lagged associations between symptoms and future stress, and autoregressive effects represented symptom persistence and stress persistence. The clinical utility of the stress-symptom dynamics was evaluated by associations with PTSD chronicity and mental health care use.
Results
Stress reactivity, stress generation, and symptom persistence were significant on average (bs = 0.03–0.16). There were significant individual differences in the strength of each dynamic (interquartile ranges = 0.06–0.12). Correlations among within-person processes showed some dynamics are intertwined (e.g. more reactive people also generate stress in a vicious cycle) and others represent distinct phenotypes (e.g. people are reactive or have persistent symptoms). Initial trauma severity amplified some dynamics. People in the top deciles of most dynamics had clinically significant symptom levels across the monitoring period and their health care cost 6–17× more per year than people at median levels.
Conclusions
Individual differences in stress-symptom dynamics contribute to the chronicity and clinical burden of PTSD.
It remains unclear which individuals with subthreshold depression benefit most from psychological intervention, and what long-term effects this has on symptom deterioration, response and remission.
Aims
To synthesise psychological intervention benefits in adults with subthreshold depression up to 2 years, and explore participant-level effect-modifiers.
Method
Randomised trials comparing psychological intervention with inactive control were identified via systematic search. Authors were contacted to obtain individual participant data (IPD), analysed using Bayesian one-stage meta-analysis. Treatment–covariate interactions were added to examine moderators. Hierarchical-additive models were used to explore treatment benefits conditional on baseline Patient Health Questionnaire 9 (PHQ-9) values.
Results
IPD of 10 671 individuals (50 studies) could be included. We found significant effects on depressive symptom severity up to 12 months (standardised mean-difference [s.m.d.] = −0.48 to −0.27). Effects could not be ascertained up to 24 months (s.m.d. = −0.18). Similar findings emerged for 50% symptom reduction (relative risk = 1.27–2.79), reliable improvement (relative risk = 1.38–3.17), deterioration (relative risk = 0.67–0.54) and close-to-symptom-free status (relative risk = 1.41–2.80). Among participant-level moderators, only initial depression and anxiety severity were highly credible (P > 0.99). Predicted treatment benefits decreased with lower symptom severity but remained minimally important even for very mild symptoms (s.m.d. = −0.33 for PHQ-9 = 5).
Conclusions
Psychological intervention reduces the symptom burden in individuals with subthreshold depression up to 1 year, and protects against symptom deterioration. Benefits up to 2 years are less certain. We find strong support for intervention in subthreshold depression, particularly with PHQ-9 scores ≥ 10. For very mild symptoms, scalable treatments could be an attractive option.
Historians rightfully insist on learning from history. Indeed, history tends to repeat itself - just as mankind stubbornly tends to ignore that fact. Bruce Cumings’ historical take on the succession issue in the DPRK is thus an important and welcome addition to the many different voices that have tried to make sense of what is happening and to provide a glimpse into the future. However, as an economist I know the risks of applying, implicitly or explicitly, the ceteris paribus condition (all other things being equal). Karl Marx, a classical economist but also a historian, saw history repeating itself in the form of a spiral. Developments tend to appear like a repetitive circle if viewed from the top, but vertical change becomes visible if seen from the side. If we try to understand the nature of Kim Jong- un's leadership, we cannot do so without a long-term understanding of the North Korean system. But we should also consider the many differences between the years 1994 and 2012. The world has changed, North Korea has changed, and even the process of preparation for succession differed. We have yet to see whether the long-term systemic currents will dominate, or whether the many details that differ in Kim Jong-un's case will substantially shape the outcome of the political process in Pyongyang. True, doomsayers were wrong in 1994, and we are able to explain why. But at least some of the reasons for their wrong assessment are gone, opening the possibility that they might be right in 2012. Little more than a year ago, in December 2011, Kim Jong Un was announced as successor to his late father Kim Jong Il. Initial hopes for a change in North Korea's WMD policy faded away after two missile launches in April and December 2012, and the country's third nuclear test in February 2013. Shortly afterwards, wave after wave of threats has been issued by Pyongyang, including the use of nuclear weapons against the United States. Against this background, does it make sense to even think about economic engagement?
We present two articles on the market response to North Korean famine.
Pak Hyun-yong was, by North Korean standards, an entrepreneur. Too much of an entrepreneur. During the famine that ravaged the country in the late 1990s, Mr Pak watched his family die of starvation – first his younger brother, then his older sister's children. Then, eventually, his sister too.
Somehow he pulled through this period, dubbed by the regime as “the arduous march”, and was spurred into taking some very noncommunist, almost subversive action. He began selling noodles.
After the launch of a three-stage rocket in April and the second nuclear test in May 2009 it seems less realistic than ever to think about opening and reform in North Korea. Inter-Korean relations are deteriorating almost daily. Hard-line orthodoxy has been returning to North Korea since late 2005 at an alarming pace as the country enters an era of socialist neoconservativism that emphasizes self-reliance and mass campaigns, cracks down on previously promoted market activities and stresses anti-imperialist struggle more fiercely than throughout most of the last decade.
