Let G be a finite nilpotent group and $n\in \{3,4, 5\}$. Consider $S_n\times G$ as a subgroup of $S_n\times S_{|G|}\subset S_{n|G|}$, where G embeds into the second factor of $S_n\times S_{|G|}$ via the regular representation. Over any number field k, we prove the strong form of Malle’s conjecture (cf. Malle (2002, Journal of Number Theory 92, 315–329)) for $S_n\times G$ viewed as a subgroup of $S_{n|G|}$. Our result requires that G satisfies some mild conditions.

Cheilopogon arcticeps (Günther, 1866) is recorded for the first time from the Indian coastal waters. Two specimens of C. arcticeps (158–167 mm SL) were collected from the Petuaghat fishing harbour of Purba Medinipur, West Bengal, India. The present paper reports the species for the first time from Indian waters and thus, the distributional range of the species is extended from Western Pacific Ocean to the Bay of Bengal, Indian Ocean. This paper provides more detailed information on the taxonomy and morphometric of the poorly known species.

The Hele-Shaw–Cahn–Hilliard model, coupled with phase separation, is numerically simulated to demonstrate the formation of anomalous fingering patterns in a radial displacement of a partially miscible binary-fluid system. The composition of injected fluid is set to be less viscous than the displaced fluid and within the spinodal or metastable phase-separated region, in which the second derivative of the free energy is negative or positive, respectively. Because of phase separation, concentration evolves non-monotonically between the injected and displaced fluids. The simulations reveal four areas of the concentration distribution between the fluids: the inner core; the low-concentration grooves/high-concentration ridges; the isolated fluid fragments or droplets; the mixing zone. The grooves/ridges and the fragments/droplets, which are the unique features of phase separation, form in the spinodal and metastable regions. Four typical types of patterns are categorized: core separation (CS); fingering separation (FS); separation fingering (SF); lollipop fingering, in the order of the dominance of phase separation, respectively. For the patterns of CS and FS, isolated fluid fragments or droplets around the inner core are the main features. Fingering formation is better maintained with droplets in the SF pattern if the phase separation is relatively weaker than viscous fingering (VF). Even continuous fingers are well preserved in the case of dominant VF; phase separation results in lollipop-shaped fingers. The evolving trend of the patterns is in line with the experiments. These patterns are summarized in a pattern diagram, mainly by the magnitude of the second derivative of the free energy profile.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) outbreaks have repeatedly occurred in two districts of Kerala state, India, over the last few years. The outbreaks in the wetland areas coincided with the arrival of migratory birds. At the time, the factors responsible for local transmission in ducks were not known. This study aimed to identify the socio-economic factors responsible for spatial variation in the occurrence of HPAI outbreaks in the two districts using Bayesian network modelling (BNM) and Stochastic Partial Differential Equation (SPDE) model. Further, information was collected on the duck rearing practices in rice paddy fields to identify the risk factors for local – spread of the outbreaks. We found that the SPDE model without covariates explained variation in occurrence of outbreaks. The number of rice paddy fields used by the duck farmers was identified as risk factor. We concluded based on BNM and SPDE that the infected migratory birds were the source of infection for the first few duck farms in the wetland areas and subsequent transmission was driven by shifting of ducks from one rice paddy field to other fields. There is a probability of persistent and recurrent infections in the ducks and possible spill over to humans. Hence, it is important to have surveillance in ducks to prevent recurrent outbreaks in the region.

Bias correction is a critical aspect of data-centric climate studies, as it aims to improve the consistency between observational data and simulations by climate models or estimates by remote sensing. Satellite-based estimates of climatic variables like precipitation often exhibit systematic bias when compared to ground observations. To address this issue, the application of bias correction techniques becomes necessary. This research work examines the use of deep learning to reduce the systematic bias of satellite estimations at each grid location while maintaining the spatial dependency across grid points. More specifically, we try to calibrate daily precipitation values of tropical rainfall measuring mission based TRMM_3B42_Daily precipitation data over Indian landmass with ground observations recorded by India Meteorological Department (IMD). We have focused on the precipitation estimates of the Indian Summer Monsoon Rainfall (ISMR) period (June–September) since India gets more than 75% of its annual rainfall in this period. We have benchmarked these deep learning methods against standard statistical methods like quantile mapping and quantile delta mapping on the above datasets. The comparative analysis shows the effectiveness of the deep learning architecture in bias correction.

Researchers in the field of conjoint analysis know the index-of-fit values worsen as the judgmental error of evaluation increases. This simulation study provides guidelines on the goodness of fit based on distribution of index-of-fit for different conjoint analysis designs. The study design included the following factors: number of profiles, number of attributes, algorithm used and judgmental model used. Critical values are provided for deciding the statistical significance of conjoint analysis results. Using these cumulative distributions, the power of the test used to reject the null hypothesis of random ranking is calculated. The test is found to be quite powerful except for the case of very small residual degrees of freedom.

Understanding why animals choose one food over another is one of the key questions underlying the fields of behaviour ecology. This study aims to test if ladybird beetle, Propylea dissecta Mulsant (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) can forage selectively for nutrients in order to redress specific nutritional imbalances to maximise their fitness. We hypothesised that the presence of more food choices leads to bad decisions in terms of their food selection which ultimately negatively affects the mating and reproductive parameters of P. dissecta. To test this, we first manipulated the predator's nutritional status by rearing them in five separate dietary groups from first instar larvae to newly emerged adult stage. Thereafter, we tested their food choice between five different foods, i.e. Aphis craccivora Koch, Aphis nerii Boyer de Fonsclombe, conspecific eggs, heterospecific eggs and mixed pollen grains, equidistantly placed in a Petri dish. Based on the food choice of the newly emerged adults, they were reared on the chosen diet for 10 days. Thereafter, adults were paired with their opposite sex (collected from stock culture reared on A. craccivora) and mating and reproductive parameters were recorded. Our results suggested that the variety of food did not affect the food choice of ladybird beetle, P. dissecta. They tend to choose their natural diet, i.e. aphid in each dietary regime. We found that previous dietary regime, i.e. larval dietary regime, significantly influences the mating and reproductive parameters of both the male and female except for the time to commence mating by the male. Food choices of adult beetles were found to significantly influence the time to commence mating, average fecundity and per cent egg viability in males and only mating duration in females. Our findings suggest that P. dissecta consistently made optimal decisions when facing various food choices. They consistently preferred their natural and preferred food choice over others, indicating a strong food selection behaviour.

The impact of a chemical reaction, $A+B \rightarrow C$, on the stability of a miscible radial displacement in a porous medium is established. Our study involves a comprehensive analysis employing both linear stability analysis and nonlinear simulations. Through linear stability analysis, the onset of instability for monotonic as well as non-monotonic viscosity profiles corresponding to the same end-point viscosity are discussed and compared. We establish a $(R_b,R_c)$ phase plane for a wide range of Damköhler number ($Da$) and Péclet number ($Pe$) into stable and unstable regions. Here, $R_b=\ln (\mu _B/ \mu _A)$ and $R_c=\ln (\mu _C/ \mu _A)$ and $\mu _{i}$ is the viscosity of fluid $i$ $\in \{A$, $B$, $C$}. The stable zone in the $(R_b, R_c)$ phase plane contracts with increased $Da$ and $Pe$ but never vanishes. It exists even for $Da \rightarrow \infty$. Interestingly, we obtain a $Da$ independent stable region in the neighbourhood of $R_c=R_b$ where no transition occurs in stability despite changes in reaction rate. The study allows us to acquire knowledge about the transition of the stability for varying $Da, Pe$ and different reactions classified using $R_b, R_c$.

Experiments were conducted to assess the impact of crown architecture on light availability beneath the trees, flowering, fruiting, yield and quality of jamun (Syzygium cumini [L.] Skeels). Trees were maintained as control, palmette and open centre crown. Impact was evaluated for three consecutive years, i.e. 2017–2019. Diffuse light beneath the trees ranged from 69.7 ± 2.22 to 45.9 ± 1.45%, whereas direct light varied from 30.4 ± 0.97 to 54.1 ± 1.78%. At flowering and fruit development stage (June), photosynthesis rate (A) in control trees was 12.5 ± 0.43 μmol CO2/m2/s; however, at fruit maturity and dormancy (August), it was only 9.5 ± 0.35 μmol CO2/m2/s. Similarly, in palmette and open centre trees, photosynthesis rate at flowering and fruit development stage was 13.5 ± 0.46 and 15.7 ± 0.54 μmol CO2/m2/s, respectively; whereas at fruit maturity and dormancy, photosynthesis rate dropped to 10.5 ± 0.39 and 11.7 ± 0.43 μmol CO2/m2/s, respectively. Substantial variation in stomatal conductance (gs), vapour pressure deficit (VPD) and transpiration rate (E) was also found. Days to start flowering ranged from 92 ± 0.33 to 98 ± 0.33. Similarly, days to end flowering varied from 99 ± 0.07 to 107 ± 0.36, days to fruit set 132 ± 0.33 to 139 ± 0.33 and days to fruit maturity 176 ± 0.48 to 184 ± 0.63. Significant variation in fruit length, fruit width and fruit weight was also found. Total soluble solids in fruit pulp varied from 9.0 ± 0.15 to 12.2 ± 0.149°Brix and fruit yield 62.3 ± 1.5 to 86.7 ± 1.33 kg per tree. Noteworthy variation in fruit quality traits was also recorded. This study illustrates that crown architecture has considerable impact on gas exchange parameters, flowering, fruiting, yield and quality of jamun.

This communication designs and investigates a twin-port microstrip antenna loaded with a metasurface (MS). The proposed MS works in two ways: (i) artificial ground plane for radiator and (ii) as an ideal absorber of normal incoming waves at the same time. A stair shaped slot is loaded on rectangular patch for creating circularly polarized wave in between 835–894 MHz. Antenna port slots oriented in a mirror manner increase isolation by 25 dB. To act as a validation tool, the suggested antenna was built and its executions in individually operating modes evaluated by statistical and experimental analysis. It is shown that combining the patch and absorber results in a well-matched antenna in between 710–980 MHz with improved gain (more than 3.0 dBi). The proposed antenna design effectively used for UHF (Ultra High Frequency)radio-frequency identification (RFID) applications, which is due to its ability to mitigate multipath reflection issues and incorrectRFID reading.

Let $(A,\mathfrak{m})$ be a Cohen–Macaulay local ring, and then the notion of a $T$-split sequence was introduced in the part-1 of this paper for the $\mathfrak{m}$-adic filtration with the help of the numerical function $e^T_A$. In this article, we explore the relation between Auslander–Reiten (AR)-sequences and $T$-split sequences. For a Gorenstein ring $(A,\mathfrak{m})$, we define a Hom-finite Krull–Remak–Schmidt category $\mathcal{D}_A$ as a quotient of the stable category $\underline{\mathrm{CM}}(A)$. This category preserves isomorphism, that is, $M\cong N$ in $\mathcal{D}_A$ if and only if $M\cong N$ in $\underline{\mathrm{CM}}(A)$.This article has two objectives: first objective is to extend the notion of $T$-split sequences, and second objective is to explore the function $e^T_A$ and $T$-split sequences. When $(A,\mathfrak{m})$ is an analytically unramified Cohen–Macaulay local ring and $I$ is an $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideal, then we extend the techniques in part-1 of this paper to the integral closure filtration with respect to $I$ and prove a version of Brauer–Thrall-II for a class of such rings.

Sperm infertility or subfertility is detrimental to the precious highland germplasm like yak whose population has been gradually declining in India. Understanding the ‘omic’ landscape of infertile or subfertile yak sperm can reveal some interesting insights. In an attempt to do the same, this study considered the semen of infertile or subfertile yak bulls for whole-genome and transcriptome evaluations. DNA sequencing revealed that the yak sperm genome contains the necessary genes to carry out all the important biological processes related to the growth, development, survival and multiplication of an organism. Interestingly, RNA Seq results highlighted that genes like VAMP7, MYLK, ARAP2 and MARCH6 showed increased expression, while biological processes related to immune response (GO:0043308, GO:0002447, GO:0002278, GO:0043307, GO:0043312, GO:0002283, GO:0043299 and GO:0002446) were significantly overrepresented. These findings hint at a possible role played by immune system in regulating infertility or subfertility in yaks. Further, in-depth studies can validate these findings and help in improving our biological understanding in this area.

Floods often displace people and exacerbate their access to finance, affecting the livelihood of daily wage workers in least-developed countries. In August 2017, Nepal experienced the heaviest rainfall in more than 60 years, severely flooding about 80 per cent of the land in the southern part of the country. Using the two-way fixed effects approach and an event study design, we evaluate the impact of severe flooding on the wages of agricultural workers. We show that the 2017 floods resulted in a 9–10 per cent decrease in cash wages among agricultural households while in-kind wages of agricultural laborers increased significantly after the floods, implying that in-kind wages helped mitigate the adverse effects of floods on cash wages. We also investigate changes in assistance, loan-seeking behavior, loan repayment, and collection behavior as mechanisms leading to the risk-mitigating behavior by farmers.

If $\mu $ is a smooth measure supported on a real-analytic submanifold of ${\mathbb {R}}^{2n}$ which is not contained in any affine hyperplane, then the Weyl transform of $\mu $ is a compact operator.

The Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) models depend on empirical constants to close the Reynolds stress terms. The empirical constants were obtained using experiments conducted at low Reynolds numbers several decades ago. In this paper, we revisit the turbulent viscosity parameter $C_\mu$, based on the stress–intensity ratio $c^2 = {|\overline {uw}|}/{k}$. Here, $\overline {|uw|}$ and $k$ are the absolute values of the Reynolds stress and turbulent kinetic energy, respectively. Through a priori comparisons, we find that the currently accepted value of $C_\mu = 0.09$ does not agree with the latest direct numerical simulation (DNS) and experimental datasets of wall-bounded turbulent planar flows. Therefore, a new value is suggested by averaging $c^2$ in the equilibrium region, where the production ($\mathcal {P}$) of $k$ is within 10 % of the dissipation rate ($\epsilon$), and consequently, $c^4 \approx C_\mu$. We evaluate flows up to friction Reynolds number $Re_\tau \approx 10\,000$ and find that with increasing $Re_\tau$, $C_\mu$ approaches a value of 0.06, which is almost 50 % lower than the prevalent value of 0.09. Finally, we perform an a priori test with the new (proposed) value of $C_\mu = 0.06$ to show that the estimated turbulent viscosity $\nu _T$ for wall-bounded flows is in much closer agreement with the exact (DNS) values than when $\nu _T$ is estimated using $C_\mu = 0.09$.
