The Japanese government's refusal to recognize the presence of Korean and Chinese forced laborers during World War II at Nagasaki's Hashima Island coal mine, popularly known as Gunkanjima (“Battleship Island”) continues since the abandoned mine was World Heritage inscribed in 2015. Hashima is one of a number of locations approved under the title “Sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution.” Hashima has become a major tourist draw, but lacks any meaningful historical information at or near the site, while excluding any mention of Korean and Chinese forced laborers. The site also is in serious decay and appears to lack any conservation plan in line with World Heritage “Operational Guidelines.” The South Korean and Japanese governments agreed to acknowledge the presence of Koreans who “were forced to work” at the mine, but the Japanese government has subsequently refused to implement the agreement. Use of Hashima as an “urban ruins tourist attraction” instead raises questions as to whether the Japanese government has complied with requirements for World Heritage listing. This policy of neglect continues the Abe government's refusal to acknowledge full responsibility for Japan's injustice toward Korean forced laborers during World War II.

David Palmer's timely opinion piece in The Melbourne Age on 6 August 2015 draws attention to the little remembered history of scores of Australian and other allied POWs who were held as slave labourers in Japanese war industries in Nagasaki before and at the time of the atom bombing. Aspects of this neglected history also form a major component of my recent multi-screen, hyper-visualisation exhibition “Fading Lights: Australian POW and BCOF Troops in Japan 1945-52”, co-curated with Stuart Bender (Curtin University).

Mitsui's Miike Coal Mine is World Heritage listed by UNESCO as one of Japan's “Sites of the Industrial Revolution.” The Japanese government, however, has failed to tell the full story of this mine, instead promoting bland tourism. In World War II, Miike was Japan's largest coal mine, but also the location of the largest Allied POW camp in Japan. Korean and Chinese forced laborers also were used by Mitsui in the mine. The use of prisoners was nothing new, as Mitsui and other Japanese companies used Japanese convicts as workers in the early decades of the Meiji era. The role of Australian POWs in particular reveals that there was resistance inside Miike even at the height of abuse by Japanese wartime authorities. Japan has a responsibility under its UNESCO World Heritage agreement to tell the full history of this and other “Meiji Industrial Revolution” sites.

Limited evidence on relative effectiveness is common in Health Technology Assessment (HTA), often due to sparse evidence on the population of interest or study-design constraints. When evidence directly relating to the policy decision is limited, the evidence base could be extended to incorporate indirectly related evidence. For instance, a sparse evidence base in children could borrow strength from evidence in adults to improve estimation and reduce uncertainty. In HTA, indirect evidence has typically been either disregarded (‘splitting’; no information-sharing) or included without considering any differences (‘lumping’; full information-sharing). However, sophisticated methods that impose moderate degrees of information-sharing have been proposed. We describe and implement multiple information-sharing methods in a case-study evaluating the effectiveness, cost-effectiveness and value of further research of intravenous immunoglobulin for severe sepsis and septic shock. We also provide metrics to determine the degree of information-sharing. Results indicate that method choice can have significant impact. Across information-sharing models, odds ratio estimates ranged between 0.55 and 0.90 and incremental cost-effectiveness ratios between £16,000–52,000 per quality-adjusted life year gained. The need for a future trial also differed by information-sharing model. Heterogeneity in the indirect evidence should also be carefully considered, as it may significantly impact estimates. We conclude that when indirect evidence is relevant to an assessment of effectiveness, the full range of information-sharing methods should be considered. The final selection should be based on a deliberative process that considers not only the plausibility of the methods’ assumptions but also the imposed degree of information-sharing.

Nothing is more certain to cause explosions of fear and loathing among some lawyers than the mention of the word “retrospectivity”. Few topics can be better guaranteed to produce conflict without resolution, heat without light. The term “retrospectivity” is used in the loosest possible way to refer to just about any change that affects a client's interests, and while debate may seem to resemble philosophical disputation, terms like “human rights”, “justice”, “democracy” and “the rule of law” are used for effect rather than argument. But despite the lack of rigour with which the public debate is conducted, the issues do reflect and exemplify genuine philosophical and theoretical problems.

Metabolic dysfunction has been long associated with severe mental illness (SMI), often viewed as a comorbidity to be managed. However, emerging evidence suggests that metabolic dysfunction, particularly at the mitochondrial level, may be a foundational element in the pathophysiology of neuropsychiatric disorders. This commentary expands on the current understanding by exploring the brain energy theory of mental illness, which posits that mitochondrial dysfunction is central to both metabolic and psychiatric conditions. The roles of insulin resistance, chronic stress and environmental factors are highlighted as shared biopsychosocial determinants that contribute to deterioration in both metabolic and mental health. The therapeutic potential of the ketogenic diet is discussed, particularly its ability to improve mitochondrial function and alleviate psychiatric symptoms. This shift in perspective, from viewing metabolic dysfunction as a secondary concern to recognising it as a root cause of SMI, has significant implications for clinical practice and research. By focusing on bioenergetic deficits and mitochondrial health, psychiatry may advance towards more effective, integrated treatment approaches that target the underlying cellular dysfunctions driving both metabolic and mental illnesses.

This paper discusses the application of the principles of factorial design to an experiment in psychology. For the purpose of illustrating the principles, a simple experiment was designed dealing with the determination of the differential limen values of subjects for weights increasing at constant rates. The factorial design was of the type: 4 rates × 7 weights × 2 sexes × 2 sights × 2 dates. The appropriate statistical analysis for this type of design is the analysis of variance. The mathematical formulation of the problem was specified and the appropriate solution for the specific problem was obtained. Greater precision results from this type of design, in comparison with the traditional psychological experiment dealing with a single factor, in that measures are obtained of the effect of each of a number of factors together with their interactions.

This is the report of the application of the principles of factorial design to an investigation of individual educational development. The specific type of factorial design formulated was a 2 Χ 3 Χ 3 Χ 3 arrangement, that is, the effect of sex, grade location, scholastic standing, and individual order, singly and in all possible combinations was studied in relation to educational development as measured by the Iowa Tests of Educational Development. An application of the covariance method was introduced which resulted in increased precision of this type of experimental design by significantly reducing experimental error. The two concomitant measures used to increase the sensitiveness of the experiment were initial status of individual development and mental age. Without these statistical controls all main effects and two first-order interactions would have been accepted as significant. With their use only sex (doubtful), scholastic standing, and individual order demonstrated significant effects. The chief beauty of the analysis of variance and covariance as an integral part of a self-contained experiment is demonstrated in the complete single analysis of the data. The statistical utilization of the experimental results has also been developed for purposes of estimation and prediction. The mathematical statistician is being continuously required to develop and analyze experimental designs of increasing complexity since the introduction of the analysis of variance and covariance. The mathematical formulation and solution of the problem of this investigation is carried out. The methods illustrated and explained in this study, and modifications and extensions of them are capable of very wide application. The general principles can be used to various degrees and in a number of ways.

It has been observed that the number of different ways in which a graph with p points can be labelled is p! divided by the number of symmetries, and that this holds regardless of the species of structure at hand. In this note, a simple group-theoretic proof is provided.

The theoretical basis for the Johnson-Neyman Technique is here presented for the first time in an American journal. In addition, a simplified working procedure is outlined, step-by-step, for an actual problem. The determination of significance is arrived at early in the analysis; and where no significant difference is found, the problem is complete at this point. The plotting of the region of significance where a significant difference does exist has also been simplified by using the procedure of rotation and translation of axes.

Clinical research professionals (CRPs) are integral to the academic medical center workforce, research operations, and daily clinical research tasks; however, due to inconsistent training, there is a shortage of qualified CRPs. The Joint Task Force for Clinical Trial Competency created a competency framework for CRPs, which has demonstrated positive results from various institutions, but training programs have been limited in standardization, replicability, and dissemination. To improve this, we designed the University of Texas Southwestern (UTSW) Medical Center Clinical Research Foundations (CRF) training program, which is a competency-based online self-paced CRP training curriculum hosted via the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) portal. We examined feasibility, acceptability, and uptake of the UTSW CRF training on an institutional scale and were pleased to find this curriculum is not only feasible but has high levels of acceptability. Furthermore, faculty, clinicians, and trainees voluntarily completed this training program indicating utility across diverse groups. The UTSW CRF combines the existing CITI training modules with UTSW-created material, providing an optimal balance between generalized clinical research education and institutionally tailored content. We believe the UTSW CRF curriculum could serve as a plug-and-play foundational model for other research centers to tailor according to their audience and institutional needs.

As the number of ethnic minority politicians increase across countries like the United Kingdom and the United States, so too have instances in which these officeholders act against the communities they descriptively represent. In this contribution, we introduce the concept of paradoxical representation which we argue functions through neoliberal, post-racial scripts of color-blindness and meritocracy. Similar to research on gender representation which calls into question assumptions that substantive representation will follow unproblematically from women’s descriptive representation (Celis and Childs 2012), we argue that ethnic minority representatives can act as “post-racial gatekeepers.” This means paradoxically working against rather than for marginalized ethnic minority groups (Saini, Bankole, and Begum 2023). Through political discourse and policymaking, these representatives construct and “gatekeep” hegemonic ideas around race, racism, gender, and migration.
