In this article, we present direct numerical simulation results for the expansion of spherical cap bubbles attached to a rigid wall due to a sudden drop in the ambient pressure. The critical pressure drop beyond which the bubble growth becomes unstable is found to match well with the predictions from classical theory of heterogeneous nucleation imposing a quasi-static bubble evolution. When the pressure drop is significantly higher than the critical value, a liquid microlayer appears between the bubble and the wall. In this regime, the interface outside the microlayer grows at an asymptotic velocity that can be predicted from the Rayleigh–Plesset equation, while the contact line evolves with another asymptotic velocity that scales with a visco-capillary velocity that obeys the Cox–Voinov law. In general, three distinctive regions can be distinguished: the region very close to the contact line where dynamics is governed by visco-capillary effects, an intermediate region controlled by inertio-viscous effects away from the contact line yet inside the viscous boundary layer, and the region outside the boundary layer dominated by inertial effects. The microlayer forms in a regime where the capillary effects are confined in a region much smaller than the viscous boundary layer thickness. In this regime, the global capillary number takes values much larger then the critical capillary number for bubble nucleation, and the microlayer height is controlled by viscous effects and not surface tension.

Experimental and theoretical studies on millimetre-sized droplets suggest that at low Reynolds number the difference between the drag force on a circulating water droplet and that on a rigid sphere is very small (less than 1 %) (LeClair et al., J. Atmos. Sci., vol. 29, 1972, pp. 728–740). While the drag force on a spherical liquid droplet at high viscosity ratios (of the liquid to the gas), is approximately the same as that on a rigid sphere of the same size, the other quantities of interest (e.g. the temperature) in the case of a rarefied gas flow over a liquid droplet differ from the same quantities in the case of a rarefied gas flow over a rigid sphere. The goal of this article is to study the effects of internal motion within a spherical microdroplet/nanodroplet – such that its diameter is comparable to the mean free path of the surrounding gas – on the drag force and its overall dynamics. To this end, the problem of a slow rarefied gas flowing over an incompressible liquid droplet is investigated analytically by considering the internal motion of the liquid inside the droplet and also by accounting for kinetic effects in the gas. Detailed results for different values of the Knudsen number, the ratio of the thermal conductivities and the ratio of viscosities are presented for the pressure and temperature profiles inside and outside the liquid droplet. The results for the drag force obtained in the present work are in good agreement with the theoretical and experimental results existing in the literature.

The interaction of dust-acoustic (DA) shock waves in a magnetized dusty plasma under the influence of nonextensively modified polarization force is investigated. The plasma model consists of negatively charged dust, Maxwellian electrons, nonextensive ions, and polarization force. In this investigation, we have derived the expression of polarization force in the presence of nonextensive ions and illustrated the head-on collision between two DA shock waves. The extended Poincaré–Lighthill–Kuo (PLK) method is employed to obtain the two-sided Korteweg–de Vries–Burgers (KdVB) equations and phase shifts of two shock waves. The trajectories and phase shifts of negative potential dust-acoustic shock waves after collision are examined. The combined effects of various physical parameters such as polarization force, nonextensivity of ions, viscosity of dust, and magnetic field strength on the phase shifts of DA shock waves have been studied. The present investigation might be useful to study the process of collision of nonlinear structures in space dusty plasma such as planetary rings where non-Maxwellian particles such as nonextensive ions, negatively charged dust, and electrons are present.

Background: The Canadian Medical Student Interest Group in Neurosurgery (CaMSIGN) is the first neurosurgery platform of its kind in Canada. Methods: In this retrospective study, data from CaMSIGN’s online platforms have been collated from February 2021 to the present and analyzed to show trends in user engagement. Results: CaMSIGN events generated 1,575 views on YouTube (384 from Canada). The total watch time was 170.3 hours, of which 43.9 hours were Canadian (28.5%). The total views normalized by the total number of students interested in neurosurgery was 17.12 hours. The normalized Canadian view was 4.17. 717 people follow the CaMSIGN Facebook account (normalized= 7.79). 152 people follow our Instagram (normalized= 1.65). 338 people follow our Twitter (normalized= 3.67). This number is comparable to that of estimated practicing neurosurgeons in Canada (333). A total of 32,974 people visited the Twitter page, with a monthly average of 2747.8. Lastly, the campaign website has had 5,811 visitors since its launch in June 2021 with a monthly average of 695.57 visitors. The number of website visitors has increased at a rate of 3.1327 visitors/month. Conclusions: Through this initiative, our aim has been to model a pan-Canadian approach to neurosurgery.

Classical continuum-based liquid–vapour phase-change models typically assume continuity of temperature at phase interfaces along with a relation which describes the rate of evaporation at the interface (Hertz–Knudsen–Schrage, for example). However, for phase-transition processes at small scales, such as the evaporation of nanodroplets, the assumption that the temperature is continuous across the liquid–vapour interface leads to significant inaccuracies (McGaughey et al., J. Appl. Phys., vol. 91, issue 10, pp. 6406–6415; Rana et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., vol. 123, 154501), as might the adoption of classical constitutive relations that lead to the Navier–Stokes–Fourier (NSF) equations. In this paper, to capture the notable effects of rarefaction at small scales, we adopt an extended continuum-based approach utilising the coupled constitutive relations (CCRs). In CCR theory, additional terms are invoked in the constitutive relations of the NSF equations originating from the arguments of irreversible thermodynamics as well as being consistent with the kinetic theory of gases. The modelling approach allows us to derive new fundamental solutions for the linearised CCR model, to develop a numerical framework based upon the method of fundamental solutions (MFS) and enables three-dimensional multiphase micro-flow simulations to be performed at remarkably low computational cost. The new framework is benchmarked against classical results and then explored as an efficient tool for solving three-dimensional phase-change events involving droplets.

New occurrences of hibbingite, γ-Fe2(OH)3Cl, have been found associated with platinum-group minerals in the Noril'sk Complex, and with the Korshunovskoye iron ores of the southern Siberian platform. The Norils'k grains, which are up to 0. 6 mm in diameter, are associated with the platinumgroup minerals froodite, cabriite, urvantsevite and with native silver in massive pentlandite–cubanite– chalcopyrite ore. The Korshunovskoye iron ore sample in which hibbingite was found is composed of fine-grained magnetite ore associated with halite. Hibbingite, hematite and silver grains are found in cavities in halite; the reddish-brown hibbingite grains usually occur as encrustations in the cavities. The size of hibbingite and hematite grains is up to 100 µm.

Hibbingite from the Noril'sk Complex contains a significant kempite (Mn2(OH)3Cl) component; in some cases it contains over 50 mol. % Mn. These data suggest that at least a partial solid solution series exists between hibbingite and kempite. All known occurrences of hibbingite represent paragenetically late mineral assemblages. In the case of the Korshunovskoye deposits, the occurrences are associated with highly concentrated hydrothermal brines derived from the Lower Paleozoic saline sediments of the Siberian Platform cover.

This case series aimed to describe clinicoradiological, electromyographic, and etiological spectra in palatal tremor (essential=1; symptomatic=26). Patients with symptomatic palatal tremor had 2 to 10 Hz arrhythmic electromyographic bursts, a spectrum of changes in inferior olivary nucleus, with/without lesions in Guillain Mollaret triangle, and varied etiologies (genetic=9, vascular=6, trauma=3, infections=3). Exome sequencing showed variations in POLG, WDR81, NDUFS8, TENM4, and EEF2. Clinical phenotypes of patients with POLG, WDR81, and NDUFS8 variations were consistent with that described in literature. We highlight salient magnetic resonance imaging features, electrophysiological observations, and diverse etiologies in a large cohort of palatal tremor.

Effects of ethylene and KNO3 on the germination of dormant common lambsquarters (Chenopodium album L. # CHEAL) seed were studied under controlled environmental conditions. Ethylene, applied in the gaseous form or as an aqueous solution of ethephon (2-chloroethylphosphonic acid), was able to overcome the dormancy of over 70% of the seed. The optimum concentrations of ethylene and ethephon were 10 μL·L-1 and 100 mg·L-1, respectively. The dormancy-breaking action of ethylene was dependent on the availability of nitrate. Hence, seed containing a high level of endogenous nitrate responded readily to ethylene, whereas nitrate-deficient seed required a combined application of ethylene and nitrate. Stimulation of seed germination by ethylene was observed in soil at all depths studied (up to 15 cm). The sensitivity of seed to ethylene increased upon imbibition to reach a peak on the third day, followed by a steady decline. Consequently, the greatest promotion of germination occurred when ethylene was administered during the first 3 to 4 days of imbibition. The loss of seed sensitivity was neither preempted nor overcome by an exogenous supply of KNO3, and may imply that the seed had passed into secondary dormancy. The present findings could form the basis for the use of ethylene to accomplish commercially significant promotion of germination in the field and thus improve the efficiency of the control of common lambsquarters.

Effects of ethylene, gibberellins, kinetin, nitrate, light, and temperature, each alone or combined with other factors, were studied on the germination of dormant seed of field pennycress (Thlaspi arvense L. # THLAR). Treated seed were incubated at a range of constant temperatures, at temperatures alternating daily between 12 and 22 C (12 h each), or at 12 C followed by transfer to 22 C. No germination ocurrred in water under any conditions. When applied in the dark KNO3 had no effect on germination under any of the temperature regimes. A combination of KNO3, light, and a shift in temperature from 12 to 22 C induced 100% germination. Four days of incubation at 12 C induced maximal seed sensitivity towards KNO3 + light, and the sensitivity remained unchanged if the incubation at 12 C was extended to 15 days. Upon transfer to 22 C, the effect of low-temperature incubation was lost within 3 days. Of the two seed lots studied, one had a relatively lower chilling requirement, but both had similar requirements for light and KNO3. Gibberellic acids4+7 (GA4+7) induced 100% germination in the dark or light at all temperature regimes. Gibberellic acid3 (GA3) was promotive under isothermal conditions, but its effectiveness was enhanced by a shift in temperature from 12 to 22 C. Kinetin or ethephon, each applied alone, had little effect on germination. Ethephon and GA3 together induced 100% germination.

Germination of dormant wild oat (Avena fatua L. # AVEFA) seed was examined in response to various concentrations of ethephon (2-chloroethylphosphonic acid), KNO3, or both together in the dark at temperatures ranging from 7 to 32 C. Both chemicals significantly (P = 0.05) promoted germination and their effects were additive. Maximum stimulation of germination in response to all treatments occurred at 7 C, with a gradual decrease in reponse as temperature or duration of after-ripening, the seed that retained dormancy during storage remained responsive to ethephon also occurred during storage of mature seed at 3 to 32 C. The rate and extent of this dormancy loss increased with an increase in storage temperature. Regardless of the temperature or duration of after-ripening, the seed that retained dormancy during storage remained responsive to ethephon and KNO3 treatments. Suitable combinations of after-ripening, ethephon, and KNO3 induced over 90% germination of seed that was dormant at maturity. Experimental evidence has been obtained that suggests that this percentage may represent the total number of viable seed in the population. While ethephon promoted seed germination, it severely stunted root and shoot growth of the resulting seedlings. It appears that strategies could be developed to combine the use of ethephon and nitrate with the natural process of after-ripening to enhance and synchronize wild oat germination.

Field experiments were conducted in 2001 and 2002 to study the effect of date of planting, herbicide, and straw mulch on menthol mint yield and oil quality in northwest India. Menthol mint was planted at three dates (December 10, December 30, and January 20). Diuron was applied prior to emergence at rates of 0.0, 0.4, and 0.6 kg ai/ha, with and without rice straw mulch (6 t/ha). Menthol mint planted on December 30 and January 20 produced more plantlets and dry matter than the December 10 planting. Menthol mint planted on December 10 had higher weed density and weed biomass, and lower menthol mint herbage and oil yield than the later planting dates. Straw mulch application reduced weed density and weed biomass, and increased plantlet population, menthol mint dry matter accumulation, fresh herbage, and menthol mint oil yield. Preemergence (PRE) applications of diuron at 0.4 and 0.6 kg ai/ha increased menthol mint population and crop dry matter accumulation, and decreased weed density and weed biomass compared to the weedy check. Diuron at 0.6 kg/ha increased fresh herbage and menthol mint oil yield over the untreated weedy check, but there were no other differences between the two rates of diuron. Physicochemical properties of menthol mint oil were not affected by any of the three tested factors.

Rigid ryegrass is the most-troublesome, herbicide-resistant weed in cropping systems of southern Australia. Field experiments were undertaken at Roseworthy, South Australia, in 2013 and 2014, to identify effective herbicide options for the control of clethodim-resistant rigid ryegrass in Clearfield canola. PPI trifluralin + triallate followed by (fb) POST imazamox + imazapyr + clethodim + butroxydim had the lowest plant density of rigid ryegrass in 2014 and provided superior control compared with the standard grower practice of PPI trifluralin + triallate fb POST imazamox + imazapyr + clethodim in 1 of 2 yr. Propyzamide either alone or as a split application (PPI fb POST) or in combination with clethodim provided similar rigid ryegrass control to that of the standard grower practice (38 to 553 plants m−2). Rigid ryegrass treated with PPI dimethenamid-P, pethoxamid, pethoxamid + triallate, and PPI trifluralin fb carbetamide POST produced significantly more seeds than the standard grower practice, which would lead to reinfestation of subsequent crops. Canola yield responded positively to effective herbicide treatments, especially in 2014, when rigid ryegrass density was greater. PPI dimethenamid-P and pethoxamid alone or in combination with triallate and propyzamide were ineffective in reducing rigid ryegrass density and seed production to levels acceptable for continuous cropping systems.

Rigid ryegrass, an important annual weed species in cropping regions of southern Australia, has evolved resistance to 11 major groups of herbicides. Dose–response studies were conducted to determine response of three clethodim-resistant populations and one clethodim-susceptible population of rigid ryegrass to three different frost treatments (−2 C). Clethodim-resistant and -susceptible plants were exposed to frost in a frost chamber from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 A.M. for three nights before or after clethodim application and were compared with plants not exposed to frost. A reduction in the level of clethodim efficacy was observed in resistant populations when plants were exposed to frost for three nights before or after clethodim application. In the highly resistant populations, the survival percentage and LD50 were higher when plants were exposed to frost before clethodim application compared with frost after clethodim application. However, frost treatment did not influence clethodim efficacy of the susceptible population. Sequencing of the acetyl coenzyme A carboxylase (ACCase) gene of the three resistant populations identified three known mutations at positions 1781, 2041, and 2078. However, most individuals in the highly resistant populations did not contain any known mutation in ACCase, suggesting the resistance mechanism was a nontarget site. The effect of frost on clethodim efficacy in resistant plants may be an outcome of the interaction between frost and the clethodim resistance mechanism(s) present.

Two field experiments were conducted during 2012 and 2013 at Roseworthy, South Australia to identify effective herbicide options for the management of clethodim-resistant rigid ryegrass in faba bean. Dose–response experiments confirmed resistance in both field populations (B3, 2012 and E2, 2013) to clethodim and butroxydim. Sequencing of the target site of acetyl coenzyme A carboxylase gene in both populations identified an aspartate-2078-glycine mutation. Although resistance of B3 and E2 populations to clethodim was similar (16.5- and 21.4-fold more resistant than the susceptible control SLR4), the B3 population was much more resistant to butroxydim (7.13-fold) than E2 (2.24-fold). Addition of butroxydim to clethodim reduced rigid ryegrass plant density 60 to 80% and seed production 71 to 88% compared with the standard grower practice of simazine PPI plus clethodim POST. Clethodim + butroxydim combination had the highest grain yield of faba bean (980 to 2,400 kg ha−1). Although propyzamide and pyroxasulfone plus triallate PPI provided the next highest levels of rigid ryegrass control (< 60%), these treatments were more variable and unable to reduce seed production (6,354 to 13,570 seeds m−2) to levels acceptable for continuous cropping systems.

Heat stress greatly limits the productivity of wheat in many regions. Knowledge on the degree of genetic diversity of wheat varieties along with their selective traits will facilitate the development of high yielding, stress-tolerant wheat cultivar. The objective of this study were to determine genetic variation in morpho-physiological traits associated with heat tolerance in 30 diverse wheat genotypes and to examine genetic diversity and relationship among the genotypes varying heat tolerance using molecular markers. Phenotypic data of 15 traits were evaluated for heat tolerance under non-stress and stress conditions for two consecutive years. A positive and significant correlation among cell membrane stability, canopy temperature depression, biomass, susceptibility index and grain yield was shown. Genetic diversity assessed by 41 polymorphic simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers was compared with diversity evaluated for 15 phenotypic traits averaged over stress and non-stress field conditions. The mean polymorphic information content for SSR value was 0.38 with range of 0.12–0.75. Based on morpho-physiological traits and genotypic data, three groups were obtained based on their tolerance (HHT, MHT and LHT) levels. Analysis of molecular variance explained 91.7% of the total variation could be due to variance within the heat tolerance genotypes. Genetic diversity among HHT was higher than LHT genotypes and HHT genotypes were distributed among all cluster implied that genetic basis of heat tolerance in these genotypes was different thereby enabling the wheat breeders to combine these diverse sources of genetic variation to improve heat tolerance in wheat breeding programme.

Addition of antibiotics to artificial diets of insects is a key component in the rearing of insects in the laboratory. In the present study an antimicrobial agent, streptomycin sulphate was tested for its influence on survival and fitness of Spodoptera litura (Fabricus) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) as well as its gut microbial diversity. The antibiotic did not adversely affect the survival of S. litura. Faster growth of larvae was recorded on diet amended with different concentrations of streptomycin sulphate (0.03, 0.07 and 0.15%) as compared to diet without streptomycin sulphate. The overall activity of various digestives enzymes increased on S+ diet while the activity of detoxifying enzymes significantly decreased. In addition, alteration in microbial diversity was found in the gut of S. litura larvae fed on diet supplemented with antibiotic (S+) and without antibiotic (S−).
