The spectrally and temporally resolved luminescence of three-dimensional (3D) InGaN/GaN microrods and planar light emitting diode (LED) structures is studied for different energy densities of fs-laser excitation pulses and for different sample temperatures. We find an energy density threshold above which irreversible modifications of the structures take place, which leads to a decrease of the luminescence intensity and a change in the intensity ratio of the GaN to the InGaN luminescence. Due to the quantum confined Stark effect, a biexponential decay characteristic is found in the planar structure, while the 3D microrods with nonpolar InGaN quantum wells on their sidewalls show a monoexponential decay of the InGaN luminescence. For both structures, the decay of the luminescence becomes faster with increasing energy density per pulse. However, the luminescence of the planar LED decays faster with increasing temperature, while the opposite trend is found for the 3D sample.

Subtle rhombus and rhomboid parallelogram patterns occur on Vaughan Lewis Glacier and the Gilkey Glacier System, Juneau Icefield, Alaska. The patterns are within the firn at the firn-ice interface, are formed by differential recrystallization within narrow preferred zones, and are apparently manifestations of stresses transferred upward from the glacier ice. On the glaciers of the Gilkey System the patterns occur where intense lateral shortening is indicated by abrupt convergence of medial moraines and an abundance of extension crevasses. The short axes of the rhombi and the obtuse angle bisectors of the rhomboids are subparallel to the strike of extension crevasses, therefore to the axis of shortening. The long axes of the rhombi and the acute angle bisectors of the rhomboids are parallel to the foliation, and ice-flow direction. The angles of the parallelograms are variable locally, but average 105° and 75°; the variation seems to reflect intensity and duration of stress. Similar parallelograms occur within the troughs of wave bulges below the Vaughan Lewis Icefall. In the wave bulges, the foliation arcs parallel the wave. The long axes of the rhombi and acute angle bisectors of the rhomboids parallel the foliation around the foliation arc. The short axes of the rhombi and the obtuse angle bisectors of the rhomboids parallel the strikes of radial crevasses, are perpendicular to the direction of extension, and form a fan divergent down-stream. The precise mechanisms and conditions of formation of the parallelograms are not yet understood. Preliminary strain-rate measurements suggest, however, that correlations exist between the orientations of the principal strain-rates and the axes of the patterns, and between the magnitude of the strain-rates and the axial lengths of the patterns.

An investigation of stillbirth and early neonatal lamb mortality was conducted in sheep flocks in Norway. Knowledge of actual causes of death are important to aid the interpretation of results obtained during studies assessing the risk factors for lamb mortality, and when tailoring preventive measures at the flock, ewe and individual lamb level. This paper reports on the postmortem findings in 270 liveborn lambs that died during the first 5 days after birth. The lambs were from 17 flocks in six counties. A total of 27% died within 3 h after birth, 41% within 24 h and 80% within 2 days. Most lambs (62%) were from triplet or higher order litters. In 81% of twin and larger litters, only one lamb died. The most frequently identified cause of neonatal death was infectious disease (n=97, 36%); 48% (n=47) of these died from septicaemia, 25% (n=24) from pneumonia, 22% (n=21) from gastrointestinal infections and 5% (n=5) from other infections. Escherichia coli accounted for 65% of the septicaemic cases, and were the most common causal agent obtained from all cases of infection (41%). In total, 14% of neonatal deaths resulted from infection by this bacterium. Traumatic lesions were the primary cause of death in 20% (n=53) of the lambs. A total of 46% of these died within 3 h after birth and 66% within 24 h. Severe congenital malformations were found in 10% (n=27) of the lambs, whereas starvation with no concurrent lesions was the cause of death in 6% (n=17). In 16% (n=43) of the lambs, no specific cause of death was identified, lambs from triplet and higher order litters being overrepresented among these cases. In this study, the main causes of neonatal lamb mortality were infection and traumatic lesions. Most neonatal deaths occurred shortly after birth, suggesting that events related to lambing and the immediate post-lambing period are critical for lamb survival.

In the few moments that I have, I would like to discuss in very general terms the role of information feedback in aircrew training and make the case that there is a need for improved computer-based debriefing aids. I am sure that there is little disagreement today that flight simulators offer a range of benefits. Such things as cost savings, reduced energy expenditure, safety and availability have been mentioned again and again. However, the most important benefit to be derived, namely training, is often-times overlooked. The assumption is often made that a good simulator, in terms of its fidelity, will lead to good training. While there are certainly examples of this, there are also cases of good simulators providing poor training because of improper utilisation, and cases of poor simulators providing very good training. The key appears to be in the proper utilisation of the simulator as a trainer, which in turn, is partially based on the simulators instructional features.

Recent global fluctuations in food prices and continuing environmental degradation highlight the future challenge of feeding a growing world population. However, current dialogues rarely address the relationship between agricultural changes and health. This relationship is traditionally associated with the role of food in nutrition and with food safety, and while these are key interactions, we show in this paper that the relationship is far more complex and interesting. Besides the direct effects of agriculture on population nutrition, agriculture also influences health through its impact on household incomes, economies and the environment. These effects are felt particularly in low- and middle-income countries, where dramatic changes are affecting the agriculture–health relationship, in particular the growth of nutrition-related chronic disease and the associated double burden of under- and over-nutrition. Greater understanding of the negative effects of agriculture on health is also needed. While lengthening food value chains make the chain of influence between agricultural policy, food consumption, nutrition and health more complex, there remain opportunities to improve health by changing agricultural systems. The first challenge in doing this, we suggest, is to improve our capacity to measure the impact of agricultural interventions on health outcomes, and vice versa.

Arrays of vertically aligned silicon wires of 250 nm–4 μm in diameter were fabricated in a top–down process using photolithography and deep reactive ion etching at cryogenic temperatures. Using the 3-omega method, thermal conductance of vertical silicon nanowires, i.e., nanopillars, was measured immediately on-chip without the need of breaking off single wires and mounting them into a special testing device. The Seebeck coefficient was measured with 2-mm2 arrays of pillars of 260 nm in diameter, which were pressure-joined with bulk chips for testing. Testing was performed in the temperature range between 50 and 470 °C at applied temperature gradients of up to 190 °C. We found a reduction of the thermal conductivity to less than 30% of the bulk silicon, confirming that arrayed vertical nanowires fabricated in an economical top–down process can strongly promote silicon as a thermoelectric material.

This review begins with a description of the parasitoid life-style and the ecological and evolutionary factors which generate the remarkable diversity of insect parasitoids. We then describe the various ways that parasitoids have been used in the biological control of insect pests, and survey their success to date. The use of parasitoids remains largely an art, aided by past experience of success and failure. A more fundamental approach, involving basic research and theory, has not as yet contributed significantly to practical biological control. We explore the potential for such a science of parasitoid use and review basic research on parasitoid ecology and evolution which is of particular relevance to biological control. Mathematical models are used to identify and examine those parasitoid and host attributes which lead to successful biological control. Factors such as parasitoid foraging behaviour, fecundity, larval survival and sex ratio are shown to be important in influencing the depression of host populations and/or the stability of host–parasitoid interactions after depression. Multiple release is discussed and a model for inundative release of parasitoids is explored.

On 11 September 2001, two hijacked airplanes collided with the World Trade Center in New York. Both towers collapsed, spreading smoke and debris for miles. Rescue personnel arrived rapidly, but the collapse of the towers made the scene too dangerous for these teams to rescue all those trapped inside. Although this collapse was impossible to predict, fires occurring in skyscrapers can cause the structures to collapse. When a fire erupts in the upper levels of the building, it is even more difficult for those trapped inside to escape. Communications systems were shut down. In future incidents with large numbers of injured victims, the injured should be transported to hospitals by non-traditional medical transport vehicles (taxis, cars, etc.). If future disasters occur in the vicinity of a hospital, the most severely injured victims should go to the hospital instead of congregating at assembly points. These victims often are already at hospitals before substantial aid arrives at the assembly points. On-scene care must be documented, and easy-to-read triage tags should be used. Reserve power supplies in major cities should be maintained in preparation for emergencies. Both victims and rescue personnel are susceptible to post-traumatic, psychosocial reactions.

Fauna associated with the common kelp along the Norwegian coast, Laminaria hyperborea, was sampled at four sites covering 1000 km of coastline. Exploitation of the kelp habitat by the fauna, and the ways in which habitat size and seasonal variations affect the kelp fauna community were analysed. The study focused on mobile macrofauna, of which 238 species were found on 56 kelps sampled, with an average density of almost 8000 individuals per kelp. Amphipods and gastropods were the most diverse and abundant fauna groups. The species composition was different on the lamina, stipe (with epiphytic algae) and holdfast. A similar pattern of epiphyte- and holdfast-fauna composition was found for all regions. Lowest diversity and abundance were found on the lamina, and highest diversity in the holdfast. Highest abundance was found on the stipe in summer, but there were large variations between sites and seasons, from a few individuals to more than 80 000 animals per stipe. Neither seasonal changes nor variation in habitat volume affected the number of species significantly, but abundance was significantly related to season and habitat volume. These variations were most pronounced for stipe fauna. Laminaria hyperborea offers a heterogeneous habitat exploited by a diverse and abundant invertebrate community, its abundance depending on local and regional variations in kelp size.

One hundred and seven bovine isolates of penicillin and tetracycline resistant Staphylococcus aureus, recovered from 25 different dairy herds in various parts of Norway, were characterized using antimicrobial susceptibility testing, multilocus enzyme electrophoresis, ribotyping, plasmid analysis and serotyping of capsular polysaccharide. Forty-one isolates from one particular herd, 37 isolates from 5 herds that used a common pasture and milking parlour in summer and 21 isolates from 12 herds in 8 different counties belonged to the same strain. The remaining 8 isolates, which originated from herds in 5 different counties, were assigned to 6 different strains. Seven out of these 8 isolates had the same plasmid restriction profile. In conclusion, penicillin and tetracycline resistant S. aureus occurring in dairy herds in Norway mainly seems to represent one particular strain that has achieved widespread distribution or belong to one of several different strains carrying identical plasmids.

We investigate by photoluminescence (PL) nominally undoped, commercially available Zinc Oxide substrates (from Eagle Picher) grown by seeded chemical vapor transport technique in order to identify residual donors and acceptors. In low temperature PL spectra the dominant emission comes from the decay of bound exciton lines at around 3.36 eV. Zeeman measurements allow the identification of the two strongest lines and some weaker lines in-between as donorrelated. From the associated two-electron satellite lines binding energies of the major donors of 48 meV and 55 meV, respectively, can be deduced.

Stressor-controlled epitaxy has been proposed as an efficient method of CdSe quantum dot fabrication. The studies are performed on a type-II CdSe/BeTe system, where CdTe and BeSe inteface bonds play a role of intrinsic stressors. Predeposition of ~0.2 ML CdTe stressor ( Δ a/a= +15%), corresponding to a local maximum of RHEED specular spot intensity, appears to induce variation of stress field across the BeTe surface, caused by alternating regions with CdTe and BeSe bonds. It results in preferential nucleation of regularly arranged CdSe QDs at the BeSe sites with the following vertical chess-ordering in the CdSe/BeTe multilayers. The structures demonstrate bright up to RT PL in the 1.9-2.1 eV range and strong in-plane PL anisotropy related to non-equivalent bottom and top CdSe QD interfaces having estimated from x-ray diffraction total concentrations of CdTe and BeSe bonds of 0.3-0.4 and 0.6-0.7 ML, respectively.
