The gut microbiome is impacted by certain types of dietary fibre. However, the type, duration and dose needed to elicit gut microbial changes and whether these changes also influence microbial metabolites remain unclear. This study investigated the effects of supplementing healthy participants with two types of non-digestible carbohydrates (resistant starch (RS) and polydextrose (PD)) on the stool microbiota and microbial metabolite concentrations in plasma, stool and urine, as secondary outcomes in the Dietary Intervention Stem Cells and Colorectal Cancer (DISC) Study. The DISC study was a double-blind, randomised controlled trial that supplemented healthy participants with RS and/or PD or placebo for 50 d in a 2 × 2 factorial design. DNA was extracted from stool samples collected pre- and post-intervention, and V4 16S rRNA gene sequencing was used to profile the gut microbiota. Metabolite concentrations were measured in stool, plasma and urine by high-performance liquid chromatography. A total of fifty-eight participants with paired samples available were included. After 50 d, no effects of RS or PD were detected on composition of the gut microbiota diversity (alpha- and beta-diversity), on genus relative abundance or on metabolite concentrations. However, Drichlet’s multinomial mixture clustering-based approach suggests that some participants changed microbial enterotype post-intervention. The gut microbiota and fecal, plasma and urinary microbial metabolites were stable in response to a 50-d fibre intervention in middle-aged adults. Larger and longer studies, including those which explore the effects of specific fibre sub-types, may be required to determine the relationships between fibre intake, the gut microbiome and host health.
Models of cation exchange mechanisms and driving forces have proven effective predictors of clay behavior and chemistry, but are largely theoretical, particularly in complex systems involving high ionic strength brines or systems where hydration is controlled by relative humidity. In arid and cold environments, such as Mars, cyclical relative humidity variations may play a role in chemical alteration, particularly if clay minerals such as smectite are in the presence of salts. This study examines the effects of relative humidity on smectite-salt mixtures using environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) to observe the physiochemical effects of salt deliquescence and desiccation on smectite textures and elemental distributions. Results demonstrate that even reaction periods as short as a few minutes allow ample time for relative humidity to affect the smectite-salt mixtures. In addition to smectite swelling and salt deliquescence, we also observed rapid changes in element distributions within the smectite and new crystal growth in the presence of high relative humidity. Even in the absence of bulk liquid water, exchangeable cations migrated out of the smectite and formed new crystals at the smectite-salt interface. The observed microscopic changes in elemental distributions indicate that the migration of cations driven by cation exchange led to secondary mineral precipitation, likely a CaSO4 mineral, within a sub-micrometer-thick layer of water on the smectite grains. The results of this study demonstrate that during periods of elevated relative humidity, active smectite mineral alteration and secondary mineral precipitation may be possible on present-day Mars where salts and smectites are in direct physical contact.
Since the founding of the United States in the late eighteenth century, Americans have rooted their national identity in their relationship with the wider world. America’s geopolitical position, its civilizing mission, its identity as the home of a chosen people, and its security requirements have shaped not only Americans’ external relations but also their very sense of themselves and who they are in a world of other peoples.
American nationalism has of course had several other sources than the outside world.1 The virtue of republican self-government – what might be identified as “civic nationalism” – has been an obviously powerful font of America’s self-identity, particularly the ways in which Americans have seen themselves as different, even superior, to other countries.
