Mosquito-borne diseases have emerged in North Borneo in Malaysia due to rapid changes in the forest landscape, and mosquito surveillance is key to understanding disease transmission. However, surveillance programmes involving sampling and taxonomic identification require well-trained personnel, are time-consuming and labour-intensive. In this study, we aim to use a deep leaning model (DL) to develop an application capable of automatically detecting mosquito vectors collected from urban and suburban areas in North Borneo, Malaysia. Specifically, a DL model called MobileNetV2 was developed using a total of 4880 images of Aedes aegypti, Aedes albopictus and Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes, which are widely distributed in Malaysia. More importantly, the model was deployed as an application that can be used in the field. The model was fine-tuned with hyperparameters of learning rate 0.0001, 0.0005, 0.001, 0.01 and the performance of the model was tested for accuracy, precision, recall and F1 score. Inference time was also considered during development to assess the feasibility of the model as an app in the real world. The model showed an accuracy of at least 97%, a precision of 96% and a recall of 97% on the test set. When used as an app in the field to detect mosquitoes with the elements of different background environments, the model was able to achieve an accuracy of 76% with an inference time of 47.33 ms. Our result demonstrates the practicality of computer vision and DL in the real world of vector and pest surveillance programmes. In the future, more image data and robust DL architecture can be explored to improve the prediction result.

Background: In the last 2 years of the COVID-19 pandemic, Singapore has been forced to explore alternative sites to quarantine persons or manage infected cases during surge periods in a national effort not to overwhelm the public healthcare facilities. External quarantine facilities were created at the EXPO and further extended to D’Resort and other hotels in May 2020. Infection prevention (IP) practices were implemented at these external facilities, where training non–healthcare staff to quickly learn and understand these required practices has been challenging. A team of staff from different clinical disciplines was formed to manage the COVID-19 patients at these facilities. The Infection Prevention and Epidemiology (IPE) department was invited to train all staff, including the clinical team, management agency, and security staff, regarding IP measures. We have described the system and approach used in the rapid training of all staff in IP measures where the goal is zero transmission while providing care to COVID-19 patients. Methods: Training materials were developed to facilitate rapid learning by all staff; medical jargon was avoided. Curriculum included precautions to be taken while performing terminal cleaning of patient rooms, serving meals, disinfecting phones and thermometers, as well as donning and doffing personal protective equipment (PPE). “Green” and “red” zones were created to assist staff in remembering appropriate PPE to be used. PPE training was provided using slides and video. Posters were created as a guide for staff at donning and doffing stations. Additionally, the IPE training team utilized an online data collection tool to capture staff completion on IP training and PPE competency for record keeping. We used a ‘soft’ approach because staff members were fearful of the unknown when caring for COVID-19 patients. Daily audits were conducted with immediate concurrent feedback to engage the relevant stakeholders. Infection prevention liaison officers (IPLOs) were appointed to assist in the daily audits. An electronic audit tool was used to facilitate audit and quick analysis. Conclusions: The experience gained in the last 2 years has been useful and may provide a template if new external sites are needed in the future because of the potential surge associated with the ο (omicron) variant.

Ageing is associated with reduced muscle mass, strength, flexibility and balance, resulting in a poor quality of life (QOL). Past studies have occurred in highly controlled laboratory settings which provide strong support to determine whether similar gains can be made in community programmes. Twenty participants were enrolled in an eight-week community-based resistance training programme (mean age = 61.3 (standard error (SE) = 0.9) years); Body Mass Index = 32.0 (SE = 1.3) kg/m2). All participants completed surveys to assess outcomes associated with QOL. Given the relationship between muscle function and nerve health, nerve conduction studies (NCS) were also conducted in a separate group of participants (mean age = 64.9 (SE = 2.0) years; Body Mass Index = 32.6 (SE = 1.9) kg/m2). This community-based training programme significantly improved QOL measures in older adults (p < 0.001). Although weight loss was not the primary outcome of the study, participants reduced their body weights (p < 0.001), by primarily reducing fat mass (p = 0.007) while maintaining muscle mass. Significant improvements were observed in muscle strength (2.2%), flexibility and balance (3.2–464.2%, p ⩽ 0.05 for all). Improvements were also observed in plasma glucose (p = 0.05), haemoglobin A1C (p = 0.06) and aldolase enzyme levels (p < 0.001). Scores for surveys on memory and sleep improved (p < 0.05). Improved QOL was associated with increased lean mass (r = −0.714, p = 0.002), decreased fat mass (r = −0.702, p = 0.003) and improved flexibility and balance (r = −0.627, p = 0.008). An eight-week, community-based resistance training programme significantly improved QOL in older adults. Influence on the lipid profile and NCS still needs further investigation.

The longitudinal relationship between muscle strength, dietary intake and physical activity among adolescents is not well understood. We investigated the trend and longitudinal effects of dietary intakes and physical activity scores on muscle strength in adolescents. This prospective cohort study consisted of 436 adolescents (134 males; 302 females) aged 13 years at baseline (2012) who were followed up at the ages of 15 (2014) and 17 (2016) years, respectively. We measured muscle strength using a calibrated hand dynamometer, estimated dietary intake with a 7-d dietary history and physical activity scores with a validated physical activity questionnaire for older children. A generalised estimating equation was used to examine the effect of dietary intakes and physical activity on muscle strength changes. The analysis was performed separately by sex. The muscle strength for males and females had increased within the 5-year period. The dietary intakes (energy and macronutrients) also increased initially but plateaued after the age of 15 years for both sexes. Females recorded a significant declining trend in physical activity scores compared with males as they grew older. A significant positive longitudinal relationship was found between protein (β = 0·035; P = 0·016), carbohydrate intake (β = 0·002; P = 0·013) and muscle strength among males. However, no longitudinal relationship was found between dietary intake, physical activity and muscle strength among females. Higher protein and carbohydrate intake among males was associated with higher muscle strength but was not observed in females. Nutrition and physical activity focusing on strength building are required in early adolescence and need to be tailored to males and females accordingly.

This paper examines the relationship between debt-oriented capital structure and economic growth by analysing a panel data of 16 European countries, based on the availability of data. We find that the corporate leverage in financial and non-financial corporations affects economic growth negatively. Furthermore, the results indicate that the leverage in non-financial corporations affects economic growth more than the leverage in financial corporations. This is due to the direct relationship between economic growth and the real sector and the fact that non-financial corporations in OECD countries hold more debt as compared with financial corporations.

In Iran, the sandfish, Holothuria scabra is the most exploited sea cucumber species which is harvested at Qeshm Island because of the high demand from Indian and Bangladeshi traders. Some specimens of the sea cucumber were collected by snorkellers diving at depth of 5 m at Qeshm Island in the Persian Gulf. An examination identified the sea cucumbers as H. scabra. Previous research has not found this species in the Persian Gulf. This report is the first to document the highly valued commercial sea cucumber in the Persian Gulf region.

In Iran, sea cucumbers are not well known and they are not consumed as food. With this and the lack of scientific knowledge about them, this study has been conducted in order to identify the present species in the northern part of the Persian Gulf. Samples were collected in the sub-tidal zone of Larak Island (Persian Gulf) via SCUBA diving in August 2011. The literature review on the distribution revealed that this is the first report of Holothuria impatiens from Larak Island (Persian Gulf). The species identification was made using morphological keys and review of their ossicles.

Nanostructured coatings have recently attracted increasing interest because of the possibilities of synthesizing materials with unique physical-chemical properties. In this report we describe our efforts at developing a methodology for the fabrication of SrFeO3-X based thin films using a modified Pechini method. Thin films of SrFeO3-X were fabricated using a spin coating and PLD method on Al2O3. The films annealed at 600 °C for one hour show a perovskite phase. The sensors based on SrFeO3-X thin films on alumina were fabricated using spin coating and PLD techniques. The sensing properties were determined using propane and propene as the probing gases. Response characteristics and temperature dependency of spin coated and PLD fabricated samples were compared. The effect of the electrode material, Au and/or Pt, on the gas detection sensitivity of the SrFeO3-X thin films was also investigated.

The uncommon occurrence of acute retropharyngeal abscess in adults can be the result of a retained foreign body. A large piece of wood impacted in the neck in a road traffic accident and presenting as retropharyngeal and bilateral parapharyngeal abscesses is reported for its rarity and clinical interest.

The case of a minor salivary gland tumour, arising from the tongue, with nodal metastasis is presented. Biopsy of the tumour and fine-needle aspiration cytology of the neck swelling showed the presence of a clear cell carcinoma with evidence of nodal metastases. A commando operation was performed and the defect was reconstructed using a local tongue flap. The literature review indicated that the neoplasm was rare and its site of occurrence rather unusual.
