Recent genome-wide association studies (GWAS) on the dietary habits of the Japanese population have shown that an effect rs671 allele was inversely associated with fish consumption, whereas it was directly associated with coffee consumption. Although meat is a major source of protein and fat in the diet, whether genetic factors that influence meat-eating habits in healthy populations are unknown. This study aimed to conduct a GWAS to find genetic variations that affect meat consumption in a Japanese population. We analysed GWAS data using 14 076 participants from the Japan Multi-Institutional Collaborative Cohort (J-MICC) study. We used a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire to estimate food intake that was validated previously. Association of the imputed variants with total meat consumption per 1000 kcal energy was performed by linear regression analysis with adjustments for age, sex, and principal component analysis components 1–10. We found that no genetic variant, including rs671, was associated with meat consumption. The previously reported single nucleotide polymorphisms that were associated with meat consumption in samples of European ancestry could not be replicated in our J-MICC data. In conclusion, significant genetic factors that affect meat consumption were not observed in a Japanese population.

Differences in individual eating habits may be influenced by genetic factors, in addition to cultural, social or environmental factors. Previous studies suggested that genetic variants within sweet taste receptor genes family were associated with sweet taste perception and the intake of sweet foods. The aim of this study was to conduct a genome-wide association study (GWAS) to find genetic variations that affect confection consumption in a Japanese population. We analysed GWAS data on confection consumption using 14 073 participants from the Japan Multi-Institutional Collaborative Cohort study. We used a semi-quantitative FFQ to estimate food intake that was validated previously. Association of the imputed variants with confection consumption was performed by linear regression analysis with adjustments for age, sex, total energy intake and principal component analysis components 1–3. Furthermore, the analysis was repeated adjusting for alcohol intake (g/d) in addition to the above-described variables. We found 418 SNP located in 12q24 that were associated with confection consumption. SNP with the ten lowest P-values were located on nine genes including at the BRAP, ACAD10 and aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 regions on 12q24.12-13. After adjustment for alcohol intake, no variant was associated with confections intake with genome-wide significance. In conclusion, we found a significant number of SNP located on 12q24 genes that were associated with confections intake before adjustment for alcohol intake. However, all of them lost statistical significance after adjustment for alcohol intake.

The earliest colonisation of oceanic islands by Homo sapiens occurred ~50 000–30 000 years ago in the Western Pacific, yet how this was achieved remains a matter of debate. With a focus on East Asia, the research presented here tests the hypothesis that bamboo rafts were used for these early maritime migrations. The authors review the evidence for Palaeolithic seafaring in East Asia as the context for an experimental archaeology project to build two bamboo watercraft. Sea trials demonstrate the unsuitability of bamboo, at least in East Asia, indicating that more sophisticated and durable vessels would have been required to traverse the Kuroshio Current.

This study examined the effects of post-resistance exercise protein ingestion timing on the rate of gastric emptying (GE) and blood glucose (BG) and plasma branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) responses. In all, eleven healthy participants randomly ingested 400 ml of a nutrient-rich drink containing 12 g carbohydrates and 20 g protein at rest (Con), at 5 min (post-exercise (PE)-5) or at 30 min (PE-30) after a single bout of strenuous resistance exercises. The first and second sets comprised ten repetitions at 50 % of each participant’s one-repetition maximum (1RM). The third, fourth and fifth sets comprised ten repetitions at 75 % of 1RM, and the sixth set involved repeated repetitions until exhaustion. Following ingestion of the nutrient-rich drink, we assessed the GE rate using 13C-sodium acetate breath test and evaluated two parameters according to the Tmax-calc (time when the recovery per hour is maximised), which is a standard analytical method, and T1/2 (time when the total cumulative dose of [13CO2] reaches one-half). Tmax-calc and T1/2 were slower for the PE-5 condition than for either the PE-30 or Con condition (Tmax-calc; Con: 53 (sd 7) min, PE-5: 83 (sd 16) min, PE-30: 62 (sd 9) min, T1/2; Con: 91 (sd 7) min, PE-5: 113 (sd 21) min, PE-30: 91 (sd 11) min, P<0·05). BG and BCAA responses were also slower for the PE-5 condition than for either the PE-30 or Con condition. Ingesting nutrients immediately after strenuous resistance exercise acutely delayed GE, which affected BG and plasma BCAA levels in blood circulation.

Equol, a metabolite of the dietary isoflavone daidzein, is produced by the action of gut bacteria in some individuals who are termed as equol-producers. It is proposed to have stronger atheroprotective properties than dietary isoflavones. We examined a cross-sectional association of dietary isoflavones and equol-producer status with coronary artery calcification (CAC), a biomarker of coronary atherosclerosis, among men in Japan. A population-based sample of 272 Japanese men aged 40–49 years recruited from 2004 to 2007 was examined for serum isoflavones, serum equol, CAC and other factors. Equol-producers were classified as individuals having a serum level of equol >83 nm. The presence of CAC was defined as a coronary Ca score ≥10 Agatston units. The associations of dietary isoflavones and equol-producers with CAC were analysed using multiple logistic regression. The median of dietary isoflavones, equol and CAC were 512·7 (interquartile range (IQR) 194·1, 1170·0), 9·1 (IQR 0·10, 33·1) and 0·0 (IQR 0·0, 1·0) nm, respectively. Prevalence of CAC and equol-producers was 9·6 and 16·0 %, respectively. Dietary isoflavones were not significantly associated with CAC. After multivariable adjustment, the OR for the presence of CAC in equol-producers compared with equol non-producers was 0·10 (95 % CI 0·01, 0·90, P<0·04). Equol-producers had significantly lower CAC than equol non-producers, but there was no significant association between dietary isoflavones and CAC, suggesting that equol may be a key factor for atheroprotective properties of isoflavones in Japanese men. This finding must be confirmed in larger studies or clinical trials of equol that is now available as a dietary supplement.

Recent studies suggest that the ability to produce equol, a metabolite of the soya isoflavone daidzein, is beneficial to coronary health. Equol, generated by bacterial action on isoflavones in the human gut, is biologically more potent than dietary sources of isoflavones. Not all humans are equol producers. We investigated whether equol-producing status is favourably associated with risk factors for CHD following an intervention by dietary soya isoflavones. We systematically reviewed randomised controlled trials (RCT) that evaluated the effect of soya isoflavones on risk factors for CHD and that reported equol-producing status. We searched PubMed, EMBASE, Ovid Medline and the Cochrane Central Register for Controlled Trials published up to April 2015 and hand-searched bibliographies to identify the RCT. Characteristics of participants and outcomes measurements were extracted and qualitatively analysed. From a total of 1671 studies, we identified forty-two articles that satisfied our search criteria. The effects of equol on risk factors for CHD were mainly based on secondary analyses in these studies, thus with inadequate statistical power. Although fourteen out of the forty-two studies found that equol production after a soya isoflavone intervention significantly improved a range of risk factors including cholesterol and other lipids, inflammation and blood pressure variables, these results need further verification by sufficiently powered studies. The other twenty-eight studies primarily reported null results. RCT of equol, which has recently become available as a dietary supplement, on CHD and its risk factors are awaited.

One of the authors developed the high strength and high conductivity Cu-24 wt% Ag alloy as a conductor material for high field magnets twenty years ago.Wire and sheet of the alloy have been used as a conductor material for pulsed magnets or resistive magnets of the high magnetic field facilities of each country. However, the alloy required large quantities of Ag addition to achieve high strength. The cost performance and workability of the alloy were not good for that. So, we investigated possibility of low Cu-Ag alloy for decreasing in material cost and improving in workability. We succeeded in the development of the Cu-6 wt% Ag alloy by the new heat treatment which is superior to the characteristic of the Cu-24 wt% Ag alloy even if the amount of Ag content is decreased in 1/4.

At present, we make a lot of high field pulsed magnets by using the Cu-6 wt% Ag wire manufactured industrially, and do that magnetic field experiment and are getting good results at the ISSP, the university of Tokyo. We will talk about the characteristic, new heat treatment method and the manufacturing process of the conductor material for the Cu-6 wt% Ag alloy.

Long-term safety of consuming low-carbohydrate diets (LCD) in Asian populations, whose carbohydrate intake is relatively high, is not known. In the present study, the association of LCD with CVD and total mortality was assessed using data obtained in the NIPPON DATA80 (National Integrated Project for Prospective Observation of Non-communicable Disease and Its Trends in the Aged 1980) during 29 years of follow-up. At baseline in 1980, data were collected from study participants aged ≥ 30 years from randomly selected areas in Japan. LCD scores were calculated based on the percentage of energy as carbohydrate, fat and protein, estimated by 3 d weighed food records. A total of 9200 participants (56 % women, mean age 51 years) were followed up. During the follow-up, 1171 CVD deaths (52 % in women) and 3443 total deaths (48 % in women) occurred. The multivariable-adjusted hazard ratio (HR) for CVD mortality using the Cox model comparing the highest v. lowest deciles of LCD score was 0·60 (95 % CI 0·38, 0·94; Ptrend= 0·021) for women and 0·78 (95 % CI 0·58, 1·05; Ptrend= 0·079) for women and men combined; the HR for total mortality was 0·74 (95 % CI 0·57, 0·95; Ptrend= 0·029) for women and 0·87 (95 % CI 0·74, 1·02; Ptrend= 0·090) for women and men combined. None of the associations was statistically significant in men. No differential effects of animal-based and plant–fish-based LCD were observed. In conclusions, moderate diets lower in carbohydrate and higher in protein and fat are significantly inversely associated with CVD and total mortality in women.

The electronic properties of the interface between Rh clusters and CeO2 (111), (110) and (100) surfaces were studied using an isothermal-isobaric (NPT) ensemble at 773 K and 101.343 kPa using the tight binding-quantum chemical molecular dynamics (TB-QCMD) method. The amount of electronic exchange by interaction at the interface between the supported Rh55 clusters and each CeO2 surface was investigated quantitatively. A comparison of the mean square displacement (MSD) showed that the topmost oxygens on the Rh-supporting CeO2 surface exhibited higher mobility than those of the bare CeO2 surface. Although the mobility of the topmost oxygens on the bare CeO2 surface was in the order (100) > (110) > (111), this sequence was altered by the presence of Rh, so that the oxygen mobility for the more open (110) surface was the largest. The amount of electron exchange that occurred between Rh and the CeO2 (110) surface was also larger than for the (111) or (100) surface. The Ce 4f orbitals on the CeO2 (110) surface exhibited the strongest mixing with Rh 4d orbitals, which simultaneously caused restructuring and instability of the topmost Ce-O bonds. This enhancement of oxygen migration in the presence of Rh was occurred together with an increase in the number of oxygen vacancies on the ceria surface. This was because the topmost oxygens was shifted to have a stronger affinity with Rh and thus formed stronger bonds with Rh than with Ce.

Recently, Nb-Si based alloys have attracted considerable attention as potential candidate materials for ultra-high temperature applications, because of their low densities and high melting points. However, it is still very difficult to obtain materials with a good balance of high-temperature strength and room-temperature toughness. To address this issue, microstructure control is considered to be a promising method. In applying microstructure control to Nb-Si based alloys with a eutectic reaction (L → Nbss + Nb3Si) and a eutectoid reaction (Nb3Si → Nbss + Nb5Si3), the key is the control of Nb3Si phase stability. Nbss (Nb solid solution) is considered as a ductile phase. In previous reports, it was revealed that different elements had different effects on the stability of Nb3Si. In particular, Mo and W (>3 at %) destabilize the Nb3Si phase, while Ti and Ta stabilize it, and Zr acts as an accelerator for decomposition of Nb3Si. On the other hand, Cr is known to enhance the formation of the ductile Nbss phase. In the present study, we investigated the effects of adding combinations of stabilizing, destabilizing, and accelerating elements with Cr, such as Cr and W, Cr and Ta, Cr and Zr. According to SEM observation, different microstructures were obtained with different combination of additives, and the fracture toughness at room temperature of these samples were also evaluated to reveal the effects of the microstructure on the mechanical properties of Nb-Si based alloys.

Epidemiological studies suggested that n-6 fatty acids, especially linoleic acid (LA), have beneficial effects on CHD, whereas some in vitro studies have suggested that n-6 fatty acids, specifically arachidonic acid (AA), may have harmful effects. We examined the association of serum n-6 fatty acids with plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1). A population-based cross-sectional study recruited 926 randomly selected men aged 40–49 years without CVD during 2002–2006 (310 Caucasian, 313 Japanese and 303 Japanese-American men). Plasma PAI-1 was analysed in free form, both active and latent. Serum fatty acids were measured with gas-capillary liquid chromatography. To examine the association between total n-6 fatty acids (including LA and AA) and PAI-1, multivariate regression models were used. After adjusting for confounders, total n-6 fatty acids, LA and AA, were inversely and significantly associated with PAI-1 levels. These associations were consistent across three populations. Among 915 middle-aged men, serum n-6 fatty acids had significant inverse associations with PAI-1.

In the first part of this paper the nonlinear development of the most unstable mode is numerically studied for a bounded shear layer with a hyperbolic-tangent profile. It is found that the vortex nutation, discovered by Zabusky & Deem (1971) for a jet profile, is a manifestation of strongly coupled oscillations in the vortex amplitude and the phase. In the second part, with the aid of the numerical result we devote ourselves to deriving coupled nonlinear equations that describe the amplitude oscillation, the vortex nutation and the momentum transport. The approximate oscillatory solution for the vortex amplitude and phase in the nonlinear stage is compared with the numerical solution and agreement is found.

In this paper, we demonstrate that high temperature and short time EBAS annealing is effective to obtain low sheet resistance without surface roughening in heavily Al-implanted 4H-SiC (0001) samples (Al concentration: 1.0 × 1021 /cm3, thickness: 0.3 microns, total dose: 2.6 × 1016 /cm2). The sheet resistance and rms surface roughness of the sample annealed at 1800 °C for 0.5 min is estimated to be 4.8k ohm/sq. and 0.82 nm, respectively. Also, we discuss the advantage of EBAS annealing for the suppression of surface roughening during annealing.

The anisotropically biaxial strain in a-plane AlGaN on GaN is investigated by X-ray diffraction analysis of the heterostructure of AlGaN and GaN grown on r-plane sapphire. The AlGaN layer with a low AlN molar fraction or small thickness is coherently grown on the GaN layer both along the m-axis and c-axis. An increase in AlN molar fraction or thickness in AlGaN, results in a slight relaxation of AlGaN only in one direction due to tensile stress along the c-axis, which is caused by the underlying GaN layer during the growth. The cause of the relaxation of AlGaN in one direction is thought to be a large anisotropically biaxial stress.

Leg muscles were occluded (33 kPa) prior to exercise to determine whether the induced metabolic changes, and reactive hyperaemia upon occlusion release just prior to the exercise, would accelerate the subsequent oxygen consumption (V˙O2) response. Eight subjects performed double bouts (6 min duration, 6 min rest in-between) of square wave leg cycle ergometry both below and above their lactate threshold (LT). Prior to exercise, large blood pressure cuffs were put around the upper thighs. Occlusion durations were 0 min (control), 5 min and 10 min. Ischaemia was terminated within 5 s prior to exercise onset. Heart rate, V˙O2, ventilatory rate (V˙E), electromyogram (EMG) and haemoglobin/myoglobin (Hb/Mb) saturation were recorded continuously. Single exponential modelling demonstrated that, compared to control (time constant = 53.9 ± 13.9 s), ischaemia quickened the V˙O2 response (P < 0.05) for the first bout of exercise above LT (time constant = 48.3 ± 14.5 s) but not to any other exercise bout below or above LT. The 3-6 min integrated EMG (iEMG) slope was correlated to the 3-6 min V˙O2 slope (r = 0.73). Hb/Mb saturation verified the ischaemia but did not show a consistent relation to the V˙O2 time course. Reactive hyperaemia induced a faster V˙O2 response for work rates above LT. The effect, while significant, was not large considering the expected favourable metabolic and circulatory changes induced by ischaemia. Experimental Physiology (2002) 87.2, 227-235.

The influences of temperature on the fruit body induction of Flammulina velutipes were investigated. The fruit body could be induced after reducing of the ambient temperature under complete darkness, but could not be induced after light irradiation without temperature reduction. Fruit bodies formed under complete darkness elongated without pileus formation (pinhead fruit body). Protein expression patterns were investigated by two-dimensional electrophoresis, and 22 protein spots were found to be newly expressed in the mycelia and fruit bodies after reducing of the ambient temperature, but few protein spots were newly expressed in the mycelia after light irradiation without temperature reduction. Four of the spots had identical N-terminal sequences to polypeptides, Pf1, Pf3, Pfd3, and Pf6 which are previously sequenced as polypeptides expressed specifically during fruit body formation of F. velutipes.

Patterns of protein expression in the monokaryons and the derived dikaryon of the basidiomycete Flammulina velutipes were investigated using two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and silver staining. Over 300 spots were detected on each gel, and 19 proteins were expressed in the dikaryon before fruiting treatment but not expressed in the monokaryon before fruiting treatment. On the other hand, 9 proteins were expressed in the monokaryon specifically. Newly expressed proteins increased after fruiting treatment (at 7 d and 14 d), but decreased after fruit bodies were formed (at 21 d). The number of newly expressed proteins after the fruiting treatment was similar in the monokaryon. Proteins expressed characteristically were classified into 7 types. The highest number of proteins (13 proteins) were specifically expressed in the dikaryon at 14 d when the fruit-bodies were formed. Twenty-seven proteins were expressed specifically in the fruit body. Fruit body specific proteins Pf1 and Pf3 were sequenced. This revealed Pf1 and Pf3 had amino acid sequences that were similar to each other, as well as a high similarity to the deduced amino acid sequence of the FDS gene isolated from F. velutipes.

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy has been used to examine the chemical states of fluorine in the glasses of composition xCaF2(50 – x)CaO · 50SiO2 (x = 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 mol %) and xCaF2(50 – x/2)CaO(50 – x/2)SiO2 (x = 5, 10, 15, and 20 mol %). The analysis of the F1s spectra indicated that Ca2+ and F- ions introduced as CaF2 are favorably located among the Si–O skeleton forming Ca–F clusters. The fraction of the bridging and nonbridging oxygen atoms was derived from the O1s spectra, and the network of the fluorine-containing glasses was concluded to depend only on the ratio CaO/SiO2.
