An overview of the neutral beam injectors developed at the Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics in Novosibirsk during the last 10 years is presented. These neutral injectors are used for plasma diagnostics, heating and current drive in modern fusion devices with magnetic confinement. An arc or a radio-frequency (RF) discharge generates a plasma in the ion sources of the injectors, and a positive hydrogen or deuterium ion beam is extracted and accelerated by a multiaperture ion-optical system (IOS). The accelerated ion beam is converted into a neutral one in a gas target. The precision multiaperture IOS with spherically concave electrodes provides ballistic focusing of the neutral beam. The high-energy, high-power beam injector based on negative ions, which is currently under development, is described as well. It comprises a RF negative ion source and a wide-aperture electrostatic accelerator separated from the source by a low-energy beam transport line, thereby improving the injector reliability.

Peptide nanotubes based on short dipeptide diphenylalanine (FF) attract a lot of attention due to their unique physical properties ranging from strong piezoelectricity to extraordinary mechanical rigidity. In this work, we present the results of high-resolution Piezoresponse Force Microscopy (PFM) measurements in FF microtubes prepared from the solution. First in-situ temperature measurements show that the effective shear piezoelectric coefficient d15 (proportional to axial polarization) significantly decreases (to about half of the initial value) under heating up to 100 oC. The piezoresponse becomes inhomogeneous over the surface being higher in the center of the tubes. Further, PFM study of a composite consisting of FF microtubes and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was performed. We show that piezoelectric properties of peptide microtubes are significantly modified and radial (vertical) piezoresponse appears in the presence of rGO as confirmed via PFM analysis. The results are rationalized in terms of molecular approach in which π – π molecular interaction between rGO and dipeptide is responsible for the appearance of radial component of polarization in such hybrid structures.

AlGaN-based SQW heterostructures grown by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy on c-Al2O3 substrates have been studied with high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR TEM), photoluminescence spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction. The high-temperature (780°C) synthesis of the AlN buffer layer nucleated on c-Al2O3 by a migration enhanced epitaxy and including several ultra-thin GaN interlayers grown under moderate N-rich conditions was shown to be the optimum approach for lowering the threading dislocations density down to 108-109 cm-2. HR TEM study has confirmed the fine structure of single quantum wells (SQW) formed by a sub-monolayer digital alloying technique and revealed different kinds of compositional inhomogeneities in the AlxGa1-xN barrier layers of the heterostructures, including the formation of Al-rich barriers induced by the temperature-modulated epitaxy and the spontaneous compositional disordering along the growth axis for x=0.6-0.7. The influence of these phenomena on the parameters of the mid-UV stimulated emission observed in the SQW structures has been studied as well.

Stressor-controlled epitaxy has been proposed as an efficient method of CdSe quantum dot fabrication. The studies are performed on a type-II CdSe/BeTe system, where CdTe and BeSe inteface bonds play a role of intrinsic stressors. Predeposition of ~0.2 ML CdTe stressor ( Δ a/a= +15%), corresponding to a local maximum of RHEED specular spot intensity, appears to induce variation of stress field across the BeTe surface, caused by alternating regions with CdTe and BeSe bonds. It results in preferential nucleation of regularly arranged CdSe QDs at the BeSe sites with the following vertical chess-ordering in the CdSe/BeTe multilayers. The structures demonstrate bright up to RT PL in the 1.9-2.1 eV range and strong in-plane PL anisotropy related to non-equivalent bottom and top CdSe QD interfaces having estimated from x-ray diffraction total concentrations of CdTe and BeSe bonds of 0.3-0.4 and 0.6-0.7 ML, respectively.

Recently Karachentsev’s group at SAO (6-meter Telescope Observatory) published a list of 84 triple systems of galaxies with their distances, radial (line of sight) velocities, and angular sizes (Karachentseva et al., 1988). This gives a new ground for studies of the dark matter problem which fills the gap between the large cosmic scales (White, 1987; Dekel and Rees, 1987, and Einasto et al., 1977) and the scale of individual galaxies (Erickson et al., 1987). The data on the typical velocity dispersions and linear dimension of the triplets indicate that they contain considerable amounts of dark matter (see also earlier work of Karachentseva et al. (1979). Numerical simulations show that the statistical characteristics of the Karachentsev triplets can be imitated by model ensembles of triple systems with dark matter masses Md = (1 – 3) x 1012 Mo, which is almost ten times greater than the typical mass of stellar galaxies estimated by the standard mass-to-luminosity ratio (Kiseleva and Chernin, 1988).

Two methods are proposed for describing the distributions of the triplet configuration parameters characterizing a tendency to alignment and hierarchy: (1) obtaining a representative sample of configurations and determining its statistical parameters (moments and percentages); and (2) dividing the region of possible configurations of triple systems (Agekian and Anosova, 1967) into a set of segments and finding the probabilities for the configurations to find themselves in each of them.
