Excavation at the site of Bhagatrav yielded four layers of cultural deposits: the lowermost being the Sorath Harappan, the upper two are medieval, and layer three caps the Sorath Harappan layer. A horn-deity painted dish was found in a stratified context at the lowest level. The medieval deposit includes turquoise glazed and celadon wares, followed by an abundance of Monochrome Glazed Ware, which is otherwise known as Khambhat ware. The date of the Sorath Harappan layer of the site, the time and space of the horn-deity motif in the Harappan world, and the date of Khambhat ware have long been subjects of discussion. With the help of a series of absolute dating (radiocarbon and luminescence), this paper attempts to place the site, horn-deity motif, and the Khambhat ware in the cultural chronology of Gujarat.

The multiscale dynamics of a shock–droplet interaction is crucial in understanding the atomisation of droplets due to external airflow. The interaction phenomena are classified into wave dynamics (stage I) and droplet breakup dynamics (stage II). Stage I involves the formation of different wave structures after an incident shock impacts the droplet surface. These waves momentarily change the droplet's ambient conditions, while in later times they are mainly influenced by shock-induced airflow. Stage II involves induced airflow interaction with the droplet that leads to its deformation and breakup. Primarily, two modes of droplet breakup, i.e. shear-induced entrainment and Rayleigh–Taylor piercing (RTP) (based on the modes of surface instabilities) were observed for the studied range of Weber numbers $(We\sim 30\text{--}15\,000)$. A criterion for the transition between two breakup modes is obtained, which successfully explains the observation of RTP mode of droplet breakup at high Weber numbers $(We\sim 800)$. For $We > 1000$, the breakup dynamics is governed by the shear-induced surface waves. After formation, the Kelvin–Helmholtz waves travel on the droplet surface and merge to form a liquid sheet near the droplet equator. Henceforth, the liquid sheet undergoes breakup processes via nucleation of several holes. The breakup process is recurrent until the complete droplet disintegrates or external drag acting on the droplet is insufficient for further disintegration. At lower Weber numbers, the droplet undergoes complete deformation like a flattened disk, and a multibag mode of breakup based on RTP is observed.

The present study investigated if the presence of encircling granulosa cells protected against di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP)-induced oxidative stress in rat oocytes cultured in vitro. Denuded oocytes and cumulus–oocyte complexes (COCs) were treated with or without various doses of DEHP (0.0, 25.0, 50.0, 100, 200, 400 and 800 μM) in vitro. Morphological apoptotic changes, levels of oxidative stress and reactive oxygen species (ROS), mitochondrial membrane potential, and expression levels of apoptotic markers (Bcl2, Bax, cytochrome c) were analyzed. Our results showed that DEHP induced morphological apoptotic changes in a dose-dependent manner in denuded oocytes cultured in vitro. The effective dose of DEHP (400 µg) significantly (P>0.05) increased oxidative stress by elevating ROS levels and the mitochondrial membrane potential with higher mRNA expression and protein levels of apoptotic markers (Bax, cytochrome c). Encircling granulosa cells protected oocytes from DEHP-induced morphological changes, increased oxidative stress and ROS levels, as well as increased expression of apoptotic markers. Taken together our data suggested that encircling granulosa cells protected oocytes against DEHP-induced apoptosis and that the presence of granulosa cells could act positively towards the survival of oocytes under in vitro culture conditions and may be helpful during assisted reproductive technique programmes.

We present a deep learning approach to the indexing of electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) patterns. We design and implement a deep convolutional neural network architecture to predict crystal orientation from the EBSD patterns. We design a differentiable approximation to the disorientation function between the predicted crystal orientation and the ground truth; the deep learning model optimizes for the mean disorientation error between the predicted crystal orientation and the ground truth using stochastic gradient descent. The deep learning model is trained using 374,852 EBSD patterns of polycrystalline nickel from simulation and evaluated using 1,000 experimental EBSD patterns of polycrystalline nickel. The deep learning model results in a mean disorientation error of 0.548° compared to 0.652° using dictionary based indexing.

Electrochemical performance of hybrid supercapacitor (HSC) utilizing surface sculpted Li4Ti5O12 (LTO) insertion electrode having nanoplatelet-like morphology and activated carbon (AC) electrode is investigated for energy storage application. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) at variable scan rates 0.5 to 60 mV.s-1 in the 0-3.2 V range show pseusocapacitive behavior and fast rate of current change indicating rapid Faradaic kinetics. Nyquist impedance study show charge transfer resistance due to kinetic effects of electron transfer and Li+ de-intercalation process at the LTO anode. Low capacity (0.2 C-1C) charge-discharge (CD) curves show high Coulomb efficiency with marginal reduction at high 5-10 C rates due to irreversibility of adsorbed PF6 anions at the electrolyte-AC interface. Galvanostatic CD cycling tests over 50 cycles at different C-rates show decline in storage capacity due to electrode polarization effects. Reduction, broadening and shift of the Raman line at 678 cm-1 from Ti-O bonds in TiO6 octahedra after cycling indicates Li insertion reactions in functioning of hybrid supercapacitor. The hybrid supercapacitor cells have shown energy density, 29 Wh.kg-1 and power density, 350 W.kg-1.

Caseinophosphopeptides (CPPs) are multifunctional bioactive peptides containing phosphorylated seryl residues in their sequence. In the present study, method for the production of CPPs from buffalo milk casein was optimised and characterised for their sequence, calcium solubilising and calcium binding activities. Response surface methodology was used to optimise the conditions for hydrolysis of buffalo casein by trypsin to obtain maximum yield of CPPs. The optimum hydrolysis conditions were as follows: hydrolysis pH 7·5, temperature 37 °C, hydrolysis time 7·0 h. Under these conditions, the experimental yield obtained was 10·04±0·24%, which is slightly lower than value predicted by the model. These CPPs were able to solubilise 1·03±0·08 mg la/mg CPPs in presence of excess phosphate and bind 0·935 mg of Ca/mg of CPPs. Eight phosphopeptides i.e. αs1-CN f (37-58) 2P; αs1-CN f (37-58) 3P; αs1-CN f (35-58) 2P; αs1-CN f (35-58) 3P; αs2-CN f (2-21) 4P; αs2-CN f (138-149) 1P; β-CN f (2-28) 4P and β-CN f (33-48) 1P were identified by LC-MS/MS which contained motif for binding of divalent minerals. The sequences of these CPPs differed from that of derived from bovine casein.

Trials in farmers' field(s) were conducted to study the usefulness of vermicompost (VC) produced from distillation waste of menthol mint (Mentha arvensis L. cv. Kushal) using earthworms (Eisenia foetida) in reducing the inputs of chemical fertilizers and improving soil health in menthol mint-based cropping systems. Results of the first trial conducted on menthol mint (sole crop) in the fields of 45 farmers clearly indicated that 75% of the chemical fertilizer inputs can be reduced by supplementing the fields with 5tha−1 of menthol mint VC leading to higher levels of profits to the farmers by significantly improving herb and oil yield (6.7 and 8.4%, respectively) compared to the full recommended dose of chemical fertilizers (NPK 75:60:60kgha−1). The second trial was conducted in the fields of six farmers adopting a menthol mint cropping system (mint–rice–wheat–mint) where significantly higher yields were recorded in plots supplemented with 5tha−1 of menthol mint VC+25% of the recommended dose of chemical fertilizers; an increase of 5.6–7.2% in mint oil and 6.6% in wheat yield over the plots receiving the full recommended dose of chemical fertilizers (NPK 75:60:60kgha−1). However, in the case of rice, the highest grain yield was observed within plots receiving the full recommended dose of chemical fertilizers. Data obtained on soil properties clearly showed that apart from enhancing the yields of crops, the integration of VC with chemical fertilizers considerably improved the soil fertility/sustainability status in terms of organic carbon, available N, P and K.

Four kinds of extruded Mg–X at.% Zn binary alloys (X = 1.9, 2.4, 3.0, and 3.4) were used to examine the effect of precipitate volume fraction on fracture toughness. All the alloys had fine grain sizes of 1–3 μm and fine sphere-shaped precipitates of 50–60 nm. The volume fraction of precipitates increased with additional zinc content. The results of mechanical property tests showed that the extruded Mg–2.4 at.% Zn alloy exhibited the best balance of strength and fracture toughness. One of the reasons was the different volume fraction of precipitates at the grain boundaries, which was the source of void formation. According to the fracture surface observations and ductile fracture model analysis, the volume fraction of precipitates of 2%–4% was shown to be enough to improve the fracture toughness for the fine-grained magnesium alloys; i.e., higher contents of zinc atoms were not needed to enhance the mechanical properties.

Fracture toughness and its deformed structures were investigated on a Mg–3Al–1Zn (AZ31) alloy processed by direct extrusion. The average grain sizes of the alloy after extrusion at temperatures of 473 and 573 K were 4.0 and 14.5 μm, respectively (i.e., fine-grained and coarse-grained alloys). The plane-strain fracture toughness, KIC, as determined by stretched zone analysis in fine-grained and coarse-grained alloys was estimated to be 24.9 and 22.7 MPam1/2, respectively. Microstructural observations of the fine-grained alloy after fracture toughness testing showed that non-basal slip and grain-boundary sliding was activated even at room temperature. In addition, the {10-12} deformation twins were observed despite the fine-grained structures. However, the fraction of deformation twins was reduced with grain refinement, which related to the enhancement of fracture toughness with grain refinement.

A commercial Mg–6 wt% Zn–0.5 wt% Zr (ZK60) alloy was used to investigate the effect of precipitate shapes on fracture toughness. The ZK60 alloy was extruded at a temperature of 653 K (extruded alloy). The extruded alloy was annealed at 633 K for 86.4 ks (annealed alloy), and then the annealed alloy was aged at 448 K for 100 ks (aged alloy). The average grain size in all the conditions was about the same, 13.5 ± 1.0 μm. The extruded and aged alloys had different shaped precipitates: spherical and rod shaped precipitates, respectively. The plane-strain fracture toughness KIC of the extruded, annealed, and aged alloys were estimated to be 22.4, 20.2, and 21.0 MPam1/2, respectively, by the stretched zone analysis. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations showed that the deformation during the fracture toughness test was dominated by a dislocations on the basal slip planes in all the conditions. Such dislocations are commonly activated in magnesium alloys during the tensile and compression tests. The spherical shaped precipitates were found to be more effective than the rod shaped precipitates for improving the fracture toughness in the magnesium alloy.

A polyaniline based conducting composite was prepared by oxidative polymerisation of aniline in presence of polyvinylchloride (PVC) matrix. The coherent free standing thin films of the composite were prepared by solution casting method. The PVC-polyaniline composite (90:10) of thickness 40 μm was irradiated with 90 MeV C5+ ions at different ion fluence ranging 5× 1011-5× 1013 ions/cm2. The changes in resistance of pristine and irradiated composite in presence of ammonia gas were studied. A general decrease in surface resistance is observed upon irradiation. The sensitivity, response time and recovery time were studied as a function of ion fluence on exposing the sensor material to ammonia gas at ambient condition. It is observed that irradiated composite films are more sensitive and fast in response to ammonia gas. The preliminary results observed are encouraging.

A case of synchronous cystic teratomas presented with the complaints of a slow-growing facial mass and forward protrusion of the right eye since birth. The patient was examined thoroughly and subjected to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan. The MRI scan revealed the presence of two separate cysts in the right orbit and right temporal fossa. The patient was operated by a combined effort of ophthalmologists and otorhinolaryngologists. The cysts were excised and subjected to pathological examination. The histopathological survey revealed both the cysts to be mature cystic teratomas similar to each other. This coexistence of a primary temporal fossa teratoma with an orbital teratoma is the first of its kind and to the best of our knowledge has not been reported before.

Formation of lipid based hollow, spherical nanocapsules is reported. N-acylphosphotidylethanolamine (egg) derivatives equipped with divinylbenzoyl functionality in their headgroup region were synthesized to explore their polymerization behavior in vesicles. Polymerizable phospholipids alone produced vesicles as an aqueous dispersion and produced stable nanocapsules upon polymerization at room temperature. These structures survived a redispersed cycle following lyophilization and maintained their structural integrity in non-aqueous solvent.

Immobilized polymerized electroactive vesicles (IPEVs) are submicron biocapsules capable of storing charge in confined environments and chemisorbing on surfaces. Methods to immobilize stable submicron sized electroactive vesicles and the means to measure electroactivity of IPEVs at nanolevels have been demonstrated. IPEVs can withstand steep potential gradients applied across their membrane, maintain their structural integrity against surfaces poised at high/low electrical potentials, retain electroactive material over several days, and reversibly mediate (within the membrane) electron flow between the electrode surface and vesicle interior. IPEVs have strong potential to be used for charge storage and electron coupling applications that operate on the submicron scale and smaller.

Microparticles (32-53 μm) of cross-linked poly-β-Cyclodextrin (PCD) having a bifunctional hexyl spacer were prepared. PCD served as an insoluble robust matrix, which is chemically inert in acidic and basic media while preserving accessibility of pesticide methyl parathion (MPT) and its hydrolysis product p-nitrophenol (p-NP) to cyclodextrin cavities. The multi-utility of PCD was demonstrated as a stable biomaterial for adsorption of MPT and p-NP through inclusion phenomena and as a single unit system suitable for casting alternate enzyme/polyelectrolyte multilayers.

Submicron vesicles immobilized on gold films were visualized in situ using environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM). Electron micrographs show that surface immobilized vesicles composed of diacetylenic phospholipids with 1 mole percent disulfide functionality and that encapsulate NaCl are structurally stable for at least three days. Furthermore, energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) provides compositional evidence supporting the formation of surface immobilized vesicles. Using ESEM coupled with EDS, a two-layer vesicle structure was imaged and found to contain NaCl and lipid elements sulfur and phosphorous.

Diacetylenic phospholipid dispersions in water produce tubules (500 nm diameter) and helices from their initial vesicular morphology as a function of temperature and concentration. A binary mixture consisting of diacetylenic phospholipid, 1, 2 bis (tricosa-10, 12-diynoyl)-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine and a short chain phospholipid, 1, 2-dinonanoyl -sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine was studied to explore the morphological transformation of lipids into tubules to develop an approach to control and produce tubules of different diameters. Circular dichroic spectra not only indicated the chiral nature of these tubules, but also provided distinct spectral signatures differentiating micro- and nanotubules. The effects of temperature and lipid concentration on the formation and stability of tubules were also explored. An equimolar lipid mixture provided structures with uniform morphology, which were stable for several hours up to 36 °C. The thermal stability of nanotubules makes them an attractive candidate for many practical applications including controlled release technology.

Diacetylenic phospholipids with disulfide functionality were synthesized and incorporated at dopant levels with unmodified diacetylenic phosphatidylcholine lipids in polymerized vesicles. These polymerized vesicles were immobilized on Au films and structurally characterized in situ using AFM and ESEM and demonstrated surface stability of at least three days. Polymerized diacetylenic phospholipid vesicles displayed retention of entrapped ferricyanide with a half-life of 2.4 weeks at pH 7 and 25 oC. Membrane-bound benzoquinone mediated electron transport across polymerized vesicle membranes providing an initial current of 25 mA and a final charge capacity based on entrapped ferricyanide of 3.5 Ahr/kg. Electron transport across polymerized diacetylenic phospholipid vesicle membranes was described by a pseudosteady-state transport model and was found to be diffusion limited.
