The COVID-19 pandemic has presented youth and families with a broad spectrum of unique stressors. Given that adolescents are at increased risk for mental health and emotional difficulties, it is critical to explore family processes that confer resilience for youth in the face of stress. The current study investigated caregiver emotion regulation (ER) as a familial factor contributing to youth ER and risk for psychopathology following stressful life events. In a longitudinal sample of 224 youth (Mage = 12.65 years) and their caregivers, we examined whether caregiver and youth engagement in ER strategies early in the pandemic mediated the associations of pandemic-related stress with youth internalizing and externalizing symptoms six months later. Leveraging serial mediation analysis, we demonstrated that caregiver and youth rumination, but not expressive suppression or cognitive reappraisal, mediated the prospective associations of pandemic-related stress with youth internalizing and externalizing symptoms. Greater exposure to pandemic-related stressors was associated with greater caregiver rumination, which, in turn, related to greater rumination in youth, and higher levels of youth internalizing and externalizing symptoms thereafter. Family interventions that target caregiver ER, specifically rumination, may buffer against the consequences of stress on youth engagement in maladaptive ER strategies and risk for psychopathology.

The early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic and associated stay-at-home orders resulted in a stark reduction in daily social interactions for children and adolescents. Given that peer relationships are especially important during this developmental stage, it is crucial to understand the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on social behavior and risk for psychopathology in children and adolescents. In a longitudinal sample (N=224) of children (7-10y) and adolescents (13-15y) assessed at three strategic time points (before the pandemic, during the initial stay-at-home order period, and six months later after the initial stay-at-home order period was lifted), we examine whether certain social factors protect against increases in stress-related psychopathology during the pandemic, controlling for pre-pandemic symptoms. Youth who reported less in-person and digital socialization, greater social isolation, and less social support had worsened psychopathology during the pandemic. Greater social isolation and decreased digital socialization during the pandemic were associated with greater risk for psychopathology after experiencing pandemic-related stressors. In addition, children, but not adolescents, who maintained some in-person socialization were less likely to develop internalizing symptoms following exposure to pandemic-related stressors. We identify social factors that promote well-being and resilience in youth during this societal event.

The beneficial effects of green tea catechins, such as the proposed improvement in endothelial function, may be influenced by phase II metabolism during and after absorption. The methylation enzyme, catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT), has a missense mutation rs4680 (G to A), proposed to result in a 40 % reduction in enzyme activity. In the present pilot study, twenty subjects (ten of each homozygous COMT genotype) were recruited. Green tea extract capsules (836 mg green tea catechins) were given in a fasted state, and a high-carbohydrate breakfast was given after 60 min. Blood samples and vascular function measurements were taken at regular intervals. The change in digital volume pulse stiffness index (SI) from baseline was shown to be different between genotype groups at 120 and 240 min, with a lower SI in the GG individuals (P ≤ 0·044). The change in blood pressure from baseline also differed between genotype groups, with a greater increase in systolic (P = 0·023) and diastolic (P = 0·034) blood pressure at 120 min in the GG group. The AA group was shown to have a greater increase in insulin concentrations at 120 min (P = 0·019) and 180 min (P = 0·008) compared with baseline, despite similar glucose profiles. No genotypic differences were found in vascular reactivity measured using laser Doppler iontophoresis, total nitrite, lipids, plasma total antioxidant capacity or inflammatory markers after ingestion of the green tea extract. In conclusion, SI and insulin response to the glucose load differed between the COMT genotype groups, and this may be suggestive of a green tea extract and genotype interaction.

The value of accuracy and quantity as memory measures is assessed. It is argued that (1) accuracy does not measure correspondence (monitoring) because it ignores omissions and correct rejections, (2) quantity is confounded with monitoring in recall, and (3) in recognition, if targets and foils are unequal, both measures, even together, still ignore correct rejections.

Some schizophrenics show anomalies in the frontal and temporal lobes. It is uncertain whether the cognitive deficits shown by Type I schizophrenics are caused directly by such anomalies, or by a deficit in the exertion of attentional effort. In this study, 16 acute schizophrenics, who broadly fitted the Type I characterization and their controls were given a battery of cognitive tests. The patients were impaired on effort-demanding tasks such as the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test, a verbal fluency test and the WAIS, which are susceptible in varying degrees to frontal, temporal and parietal lobe lesions. Patients were not disproportionately impaired, however, on a test of temporal memory and another of spatial memory, an impairment pattern that selectively reflects frontal and medial temporal lobe lesions respectively, nor were they impaired on a rate of forgetting task sensitive to medial temporal lobe lesions. These tasks were chosen not only because performance on them is selectively sensitive to frontotemporal lobe lesions, but also because it seems to depend on exerting minimum amounts of attentional effort. It is tentatively concluded that the cognitive deficits shown by Type I schizophrenics are caused by a problem in exerting attentional effort of unknown origin.

The wet chemical synthesis of energy and sensor relevant nanomaterials often requires large amounts of high boiling point solvents, grams of reactants, solvent-based purification, and the use of oxygen free atmospheres. These synthetic routes are also prone to poor scalability due to requirements of precise control of high temperatures. Because of this, the potential use of metallic nanoparticles and semiconductive quantum dots (q-dots) in energy transfer and real time biosensor applications is labor intensive and expensive. We have explored a green alternative route that involves the colloidal synthesis of CdSe and CdTe quantum dots under well-controlled hydrothermal conditions (100-200°C) using simple inorganic precursors. The resulting nanomaterials are of high quality, and are easily processed depending upon application, and their synthesis is scalable. Temperature control, and synthetic scalability is provided by the use of a synthetic microwave reactor, which employs computer-controlled dielectric heating for the rapid and controllable heating.

In order to evaluate the compatibility of structured nanoparticles produced by aqueous emulsion polymerisation with the non-covalent imprinting procedure, a number of imprinted polymeric nanoparticles have been synthesised by seeded emulsion polymerisation in the presence and absence of a porogenic solvent. Propranolol was chosen as the template molecule using methacrylic acid (MAA) and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EDMA) as functional monomer and crosslinker respectively. The influence of the porogen and the amount of template added was studied by measuring the capacity of the polymeric particles to rebind template both in organic and aqueous buffers by radioligand binding assay. By increasing the amount of template from 0.5 to 6% (mol/mol with respect to monomers) the specific rebinding was increased from 2% to 24% in aqueous buffer and to 31% in a toluene based assay. The influence of the porosity was also established when the rebinding was performed in an organic solvent.
