Weak-line T Tauri stars (WTTS) exhibit X-ray flares, likely resulting from magnetic reconnection that heats the stellar plasma to very high temperatures. These flares are difficult to identify through targeted observations. Here, we report the serendipitous detection of the brightest X-ray flaring state of the WTTS KM Ori in the eROSITA DR1 survey. Observations from SRG/eROSITA, Chandra X-ray Observatory, and XMM-Newton are analysed to assess the X-ray properties of KM Ori, thereby establishing its flaring state at the eROSITA epoch. The long-term (1999–2020) X-ray light curve generated for the Chandra observations confirmed that eROSITA captured the source at its highest X-ray flaring state recorded to date. Multi-instrument observations support the X-ray flaring state of the source, with time-averaged X-ray luminosity ($L_\mathrm{0.2-5\ keV}$) reaching $\sim 1.9\times10^{32}\mathrm{{erg\ s^{-1}}}$ at the eROSITA epoch, marking it the brightest and possibly the longest flare observed so far. Such intense X-ray flares have been detected only in a few WTTS. The X-ray spectral analysis unveils the presence of multiple thermal plasma components at all epochs. The notably high luminosity ($L_\mathrm{0.5-8\ keV}\sim10^{32}\ \mathrm{erg\ s}^{-1}$), energy ($E_\mathrm{ 0.5-8\ keV}\sim10^{37}$ erg), and the elevated emission measures of the thermal components in the eROSITA epoch indicate a superflare/megaflare state of KM Ori. Additionally, the H$\alpha$ line equivalent width of $\sim$$-5$ Å from our optical spectral analysis, combined with the lack of infrared excess in the spectral energy distribution, were used to re-confirm the WTTS (thin disc/disc-less) classification of the source. The long-duration flare of KM Ori observed by eROSITA indicates the possibility of a slow-rise top-flat flare. The detection demonstrates the potential of eROSITA to uncover such rare, transient events, thereby providing new insights into the X-ray activity of WTTS.

This work aims to perform a parametric study on a round supersonic jet with a design Mach number Md = 1.8, which is manipulated using a single steady radial minijet with a view to enhancing its mixing. Four control parameters are examined, i.e. the mass flow rate ratio Cm and diameter ratio d/D of the minijet to main jet, and exit pressure ratio Pe/Pa and fully expanded jet Mach number Mj, where Pe and Pa are the nozzle exit and atmospheric pressures, respectively. Extensive pressure and schlieren flow visualization measurements are conducted on the natural and manipulated jets. The supersonic jet core length Lc/D exhibits a strong dependence on the four control parameters. Careful scaling analysis of experimental data reveals that Lc/D = f1(Cm, d/D, Pe/Pa, Mj) may be reduced to Lc/D = f2(ξ), where f1 and f2 are different functions. The scaling factor $\xi = J({d_i}/{D_j})/(\gamma M_j^2{P_e}/{P_a})$ is physically the penetration depth of the minijet into the main jet, where $J({d_i}/{D_j})$ is the square root of the momentum ratio of the minijet to main jet (di and Dj are the fully expanded diameters of d and D, respectively), γ is the specific heat ratio and $\gamma M_j^2{P_e}/{P_a}$ is the non-dimensional exit pressure ratio. Important physical insight may be gained from this scaling law into the optimal choice of control parameters such as d/D and Pe/Pa for practical applications. It has been found for the first time that the minijet may induce a street of quasi-periodical coherent structures once Cm exceeds a certain level for a given ${P_e}/{P_a}$. Its predominant dimensionless frequency Ste (≡ feDj/Uj) scales with a factor $\zeta = J({d_i}/{D_j})\; \sqrt {\gamma M_j^2{P_e}/{P_a}} $, which is physically the ratio of the minijet momentum thrust to the ambient pressure thrust. The formation mechanism of the street and its role in enhancing jet mixing are also discussed.

In the third week of September 2022, an outbreak of measles was reported from a slum in Eastern Mumbai, India. We sought to investigate whether failure to vaccinate or vaccine failure was the cause. We constructed an epidemic curve, drew a spot map, and calculated the attack rate and case-fatality ratio. We calculated vaccine effectiveness (VE) for one and two doses of measles vaccine in an unmatched case–control study and did stratified analysis by sex, availability of vaccination card, and migrant status. We identified 358 cases and four deaths with a 11.3% attack rate and 1.1% case fatality, both being highest among 0–24-month-old boys. The epidemic curve suggested a propagated mode of spread. The VE for two doses was 64% (95% confidence interval (CI): 23–73%) among under-5-year-old children and 70% (95% CI: 28–88%) among 5–15-year-old children. Failure to vaccinate, consequent to the COVID-19 pandemic, and vaccine hesitancy might have led to the accumulation of susceptible children in the community. Additionally, the occurrence of case-patients among vaccinated suggests reduced VE, which needs further investigation into humoral and cell-mediated immunity as well as contributory factors including nutritional status. Outbreak response immunization to complete immunization of missed and dropout children was carried out to control the outbreak.

Let $G$ be a compact Lie group. In this article, we investigate the Cauchy problem for a nonlinear wave equation with the viscoelastic damping on $G$. More precisely, we investigate some $L^2$-estimates for the solution to the homogeneous nonlinear viscoelastic damped wave equation on $G$ utilizing the group Fourier transform on $G$. We also prove that there is no improvement of any decay rate for the norm $\|u(t,\,\cdot )\|_{L^2(G)}$ by further assuming the $L^1(G)$-regularity of initial data. Finally, using the noncommutative Fourier analysis on compact Lie groups, we prove a local in time existence result in the energy space $\mathcal {C}^1([0,\,T],\,H^1_{\mathcal {L}}(G)).$

Palaeo-monsoon and palaeoclimate conditions over Southeast Asia are a matter of debate despite notable studies on the continental and oceanic sedimentary record. The present study investigates the environmental magnetic and geochemical records preserved in the deep marine sediments of the northeastern (NE) Arabian Sea to elucidate the erosion history of the western Himalayas and its link with the prevailing hydroclimatic conditions since the late Miocene. For this, the sediment core retrieved during International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 355 at Site U1457 in the NE Arabian Sea has been explored. The results reveal that the hydroclimatic conditions were predominantly arid during the late Miocene, except for humid intervals from 6.1 Ma to 5.6 Ma. Humid climate conditions in the Indus River Basin returned during the mid-Pliocene and continued to the Pleistocene with an intense chemical weathering regime from 1.9 Ma to 1.2 Ma. The dominant sediment source to the NE Arabian Sea at Site U1457 during the late Miocene and the Pliocene was the Indus River, while during the Pleistocene, mixed sediments brought by the Indus River and the Peninsular Indian rivers were observed. The sediment contribution from a chemically less altered mafic source (the Deccan basalts) increased between 1.2 Ma and 0.2 Ma, possibly linked to a weak Indian Summer Monsoon. The summer monsoon wind strength and associated shift in the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) influenced the dominant sediment provenance at Site U1457 of the Laxmi Basin.

We present the pulse arrival times and high-precision dispersion measure estimates for 14 millisecond pulsars observed simultaneously in the 300 $-$ 500 MHz and 1260 $-$ 1460 MHz frequency bands using the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope. The data spans over a baseline of 3.5 years (2018-2021), and is the first official data release made available by the Indian Pulsar Timing Array collaboration. This data release presents a unique opportunity for investigating the interstellar medium effects at low radio frequencies and their impact on the timing precision of pulsar timing array experiments. In addition to the dispersion measure time series and pulse arrival times obtained using both narrowband and wideband timing techniques, we also present the dispersion measure structure function analysis for selected pulsars. Our ongoing investigations regarding the frequency dependence of dispersion measures have been discussed. Based on the preliminary analysis for five millisecond pulsars, we do not find any conclusive evidence of chromaticity in dispersion measures. Data from regular simultaneous two-frequency observations are presented for the first time in this work. This distinctive feature leads us to the highest precision dispersion measure estimates obtained so far for a subset of our sample. Simultaneous multi-band upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope observations in 300 $-$ 500 MHz and 1260 $-$ 1460 MHz are crucial for high-precision dispersion measure estimation and for the prospect of expanding the overall frequency coverage upon the combination of data from the various Pulsar Timing Array consortia in the near future. Parts of the data presented in this work are expected to be incorporated into the upcoming third data release of the International Pulsar Timing Array.

We examine the translation of a sphere in a stratified ambient in the limit of small Reynolds numbers ($Re \ll 1$) and viscous Richardson numbers ($Ri_v \ll 1$); here, $Re = {\rho Ua}/{\mu }$ and $Ri_v = {\gamma a^3 g}/{\mu U}$, with $a$ being the sphere radius, $U$ the translation speed, $\rho$ and $\mu$ the density and viscosity of the stratified ambient, $g$ the acceleration due to gravity, and $\gamma$ the density gradient characterizing the ambient stratification. In contrast to most earlier efforts, our study considers the convection-dominant limit corresponding to $Pe = {Ua}/{D} \gg 1$, $D$ being the diffusivity of the stratifying agent. We characterize in detail the velocity and density fields around the particle in what we term the Stokes stratification regime, defined by $Re \ll Ri_v^{{1}/{3}} \ll 1$, and corresponding to the dominance of buoyancy over inertial forces. Buoyancy forces associated with the perturbed stratification fundamentally alter the viscously dominated fluid motion at large distances of order the stratification screening length that scales as $a\,Ri_v^{-{1}/{3}}$. The motion at these distances transforms from the familiar fore–aft symmetric Stokesian form to a fore–aft asymmetric pattern of recirculating cells with primarily horizontal motion within, except in the vicinity of the rear stagnation streamline. At larger distances, the motion is vanishingly small except within (a) an axisymmetric horizontal wake whose vertical extent grows as $O(r_t^{{2}/{5}})$, $r_t$ being the distance in the plane perpendicular to translation, and (b) a buoyant reverse jet behind the particle that narrows as the inverse square root of distance downstream. As a result, for $Pe = \infty$, the motion close to the rear stagnation streamline starts off pointing in the direction of translation, in the inner region, and decaying as the inverse of the downstream distance; the motion reverses beyond distance $1.15a\,Ri_v^{-{1}/{3}}$, with the eventual reverse flow in the far-field buoyant jet again decaying as the inverse of the distance downstream. For large but finite $Pe$, the narrowing jet is smeared out beyond a distance of $O(a\,Ri_v^{-{1}/{2}}\, Pe^{{1}/{2}})$, leading to an exponential decay of the aforementioned reverse flow.

U–Pb geochronology, Hf isotopes and trace-element chemistry of zircon grains from migmatite of the upper Sutlej valley (Leo Pargil), Northwest Himalaya, reveal a protracted geological evolution and constrain anatexis and tectonothermal processes in response to Himalayan orogenesis. U–Pb geochronology and ϵHf record separate clusters of ages on the concordia plots in the migmatite (1050–950 Ma, 850–790 Ma and 650–500 Ma). The 1050–950 Ma zircon population supports a provenance from magmatic units related to the assembly of Rodinia. A minor amount of Palaeoproterozoic grains were likely derived from the Indian craton. The potential source rock of the 930–800 Ma detrital zircons may be granitoid present in Greater Himalayan rocks themselves and the Aravalli Range, which has 870–800 Ma granitic rocks. The arc-type basement within the Himalayan–Tibet orogen recorded (900–600 Ma) igneous activity, which may depict a northeasterly extension of juvenile terranes in the Arabian–Nubian Shield. The granitoid of 800 Ma may be a potential source for 790 Ma detrital zircons owing to scatter in 206/238 dates. The 650–500 Ma zircon population suggests their derivation from the East African Orogen and Ross–Delamerian Orogen of Gondwana. The Cambrian–Ordovician magmatism during the Bhimphedian Orogeny and observed late Neoproterozoic to Ordovician detrital zircons have been derived to some extent from Greater Himalayan magmatic sources. We found no detrital zircon grains that cannot be explained as coming from local sources. One sample yielded a discordia lower intercept age of 15.6 ± 2.2 Ma, the age of melt crystallization.

We derive analytically the angular velocity of a spheroid, of an arbitrary aspect ratio $\kappa$, sedimenting in a linearly stratified fluid. The analysis demarcates regions in parameter space corresponding to broadside-on and edgewise settling in the limit $Re, Ri_v \ll 1$, where $Re = \rho _0UL/\mu$ and $Ri_v =\gamma L^3\,g/\mu U$, the Reynolds and viscous Richardson numbers, respectively, are dimensionless measures of the importance of inertial and buoyancy forces relative to viscous ones. Here, $L$ is the spheroid semi-major axis, $U$ an appropriate settling velocity scale, $\mu$ the fluid viscosity and $\gamma \ (>0)$ the (constant) density gradient characterizing the stably stratified ambient, with the fluid density $\rho_0$ taken to be a constant within the Boussinesq framework. A reciprocal theorem formulation identifies three contributions to the angular velocity: (1) an $O(Re)$ inertial contribution that already exists in a homogeneous ambient, and orients the spheroid broadside-on; (2) an $O(Ri_v)$ hydrostatic contribution due to the ambient stratification that also orients the spheroid broadside-on; and (3) a hydrodynamic contribution arising from the perturbation of the ambient stratification whose nature depends on $Pe$; $Pe = UL/D$ being the Péclet number with $D$ the diffusivity of the stratifying agent. For $Pe \ll 1$, this contribution is $O(Ri_v)$ and orients prolate spheroids edgewise for all $\kappa \ (>1)$. For oblate spheroids, it changes sign across a critical aspect ratio $\kappa _c \approx 0.41$, orienting oblate spheroids with $\kappa _c < \kappa < 1$ edgewise and those with $\kappa < \kappa _c$ broadside-on. For $Pe \ll 1$, the hydrodynamic component is always smaller in magnitude than the hydrostatic one, so a sedimenting spheroid in this limit always orients broadside-on. For $Pe \gg 1$, the hydrodynamic contribution is dominant, being $O(Ri_v^{{2}/{3}}$) in the Stokes stratification regime characterized by $Re \ll Ri_v^{{1}/{3}}$, and orients the spheroid edgewise regardless of $\kappa$. Consideration of the inertial and large-$Pe$ stratification-induced angular velocities leads to two critical curves which separate the broadside-on and edgewise settling regimes in the $Ri_v/Re^{{3}/{2}}$–$\kappa$ plane, with the region between the curves corresponding to stable intermediate equilibrium orientations. The predictions for large $Pe$ are broadly consistent with observations.

We introduce pinta, a pipeline for reducing the upgraded Giant Metre-wave Radio Telescope (uGMRT) raw pulsar timing data, developed for the Indian Pulsar Timing Array experiment. We provide a detailed description of the workflow and usage of pinta, as well as its computational performance and RFI mitigation characteristics. We also discuss a novel and independent determination of the relative time offsets between the different back-end modes of uGMRT and the interpretation of the uGMRT observation frequency settings and their agreement with results obtained from engineering tests. Further, we demonstrate the capability of pinta to generate data products which can produce high-precision TOAs using PSR J1909 $-$ 3744 as an example. These results are crucial for performing precision pulsar timing with the uGMRT.

Myocardial fibrosis is associated with adverse events in idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy. Cardiac MRI with late gadolinium enhancement can detect myocardial fibrosis. We evaluated the conditional survival of children and adolescents based on native T1 mapping (combined proton signal from myocytes and interstitium prior to contrast administration by the measurement of myocardial and blood relaxation time) as a means to assess myocardial fibrosis. This retrospective case–cohort over a 3-year period included all consecutive patients (aged ≤ 21 years) with advanced heart failure from dilated cardiomyopathy (echocardiographic left ventricular ejection fraction ≤ 45% and NYHA class ≥ 2) who underwent cardiac MRI.

Conditional survival (follow-up ≥ 6 months after cardiac MRI) was assessed to include NYHA functional class and time to event (death or heart transplantation). A total of 57 patients (mean age 11.7 ± 6.1 years; 58% male) had a median NYHA Class III (31/57) and median left ventricular ejection fraction 25% (20–38%). Survival data were available in 82% patients (46/57) and the crude mortality rate was 24% (11/46) and one patient (2%) underwent heart transplantation. The median native T1 was elevated at 1351 ms (95% CI 1332, 1394) and it showed no difference between the groups who survived to those who died. Performing a multilevel regression analysis on prognosis failed to predict 6-month conditional survival.

Varicella infection during pregnancy has serious and/or difficult implications and in some cases lethal outcome. Though epidemiological studies in developing countries reveal that a significant proportion of patients may remain susceptible during pregnancy, such an estimate of susceptible women is not known in India. We designed this study to study the prevalence and factors associated with susceptibility to varicella among rural and urban pregnant women in South India. We prospectively recruited 430 pregnant women and analysed their serum varicella IgG antibodies as surrogates for protection. We estimated seroprevalence, the validity of self-reported history of chickenpox and factors associated with varicella susceptibility. We found 23 (95% CI 19.1–27.3) of women were susceptible. Nearly a quarter (22.2%) of the susceptible women had a history of exposure to chickenpox anytime in the past or during the current pregnancy. Self-reported history of varicella had a positive predictive value of 82.4%. Negative history of chickenpox (adjusted prevalence ratio (PR) 1.85, 95% CI 1.15–3.0) and receiving antenatal care from a rural secondary hospital (adjusted PR 4.08, 95% CI 2.1–7.65) were significantly associated with susceptibility. We conclude that high varicella susceptibility rates during pregnancy were noted and self-reported history of varicella may not be a reliable surrogate for protection.

The pandemic of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is rapidly progressing, causing significant morbidity and mortality. Various antiviral drugs, anti-inflammatory drugs and immunomodulators have been tried without substantial clinical benefits. The severe and critical cases of COVID-19 disease are characterised by gut microbiome dysbiosis, immune dysregulation, hyper-inflammation and hypercytokinaemia (cytokine storm). Therefore, the strategies which target these pathophysiological processes may be beneficial. Probiotics are one such strategy that exerts beneficial effects by manipulation of the gut microbiota, suppression of opportunistic pathogens in the gut, decreasing translocation of opportunistic organisms, activation of mucosal immunity and modulation of the innate and adaptive immune response. Probiotics are the potential candidates to be tested in moderate and severe cases of COVID-19 due to several beneficial effects, including easy availability, easy to administer, safe and economical to use.

We present a robot navigation system based on Behavioral Finite State Social Machine. The paper makes a robot operate as a social tour guide that adapts its navigation based on the behavior of the visitors. The problem of a robot leading a human group with a limited field-of-view vision is relatively untouched in the literature. Uncertainties arise when the visitors are not visible, wherein the behavior of the robot is adapted as a social response. Artificial potential field is used for local planning, and a velocity manager sets the speed disproportional to time duration of missing visitors.

In this paper, a high gain wideband circularly polarized (CP) microstrip antenna is presented for broadband operation. The proposed structure comprised of a partially grounded printed monopole antenna loaded with a split ring resonator and a metallic reflector. By using the metallic reflector surface underneath the patch radiator results in the reflected waves in the same phase with main lobe radiation, thereby improving the gain and it also acts like a secondary radiator to generate wideband CP behavior in the proposed design. A gain enhancement of 4.3 dBi is achieved in the operating frequency band as compared with the design without a metallic reflector. The maximum gain achieved in the presented method is 8.6 dBic over the entire operating range. The proposed design shows a wideband behavior ranging from 4.30 to 9.10 GHz with the 10-dB impedance bandwidth of 71.64%. In addition, the proposed design yielded a broadside right hand CP radiation with a 3-dB axial ratio bandwidth of 33.88% from 4.98 to 7.01 GHz. The proposed antenna is fabricated and experimental results on reflection coefficient, gain, axial ratio, and radiation patterns concede well with simulation results.

Upper water column dynamics in the eastern Arabian Sea were reconstructed in order to investigate changes in the activity of the South Asian / Indian monsoon during the early Pleistocene (c. 1.5–2.7 Ma). We used planktic foraminiferal assemblage records combined with isotopic (δ18O and δ13C) data, Mg/Ca-based sea surface temperatures and seawater δ18O records to estimate changes in surface water conditions at International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Site U1457. Our records indicate two distinct regimes of monsoon-induced changes in upper water structure during the periods c. 1.55–1.65 Ma and c. 1.85–2.7 Ma. We infer that a more stratified upper water column and oligotrophic mixed layer conditions prevailed during the period 1.85–2.7 Ma, which may be due to overall weaker South Asian / Indian winter (NE) and summer (SW) monsoon circulations. The period 1.55–1.65 Ma was characterized by enhanced eutrophication of the mixed layer, which was probably triggered by intensified winter (NE) monsoonal winds. The long-term trend in hydrographic changes during 1.55–1.65 Ma appears to be superimposed by short-term variations, probably reflecting glacial/interglacial changes. We suggest that an intensification of the South Asian / Indian winter monsoon circulation occurred between ∼1.65 Ma and 1.85 Ma, which is most likely due to the development of strong meridional and zonal atmospheric circulations (i.e. Walker Circulation and Hadley Circulation) because of strong equatorial East–West Pacific temperature gradients.
