We provide an assessment of the Infinity Two Fusion Pilot Plant (FPP) baseline plasma physics design. Infinity Two is a four-field period, aspect ratio A = 10, quasi-isodynamic stellarator with improved confinement appealing to a max-J approach, elevated plasma density and high magnetic fields (⟨B⟩ = 9 T). At the envisioned operating point [800 MW deuterium-tritium (DT) fusion], the configuration has robust magnetic surfaces based on magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equilibrium calculations and is stable to both local and global MHD instabilities. The configuration has excellent confinement properties with small neoclassical transport and low bootstrap current (|Ibootstrap| ∼ 2 kA). Calculations of collisional alpha particle confinement in a DT FPP scenario show small energy losses to the first wall (< 1.5%) and stable energetic particle/Alfvén eigenmodes at high ion density. Low turbulent transport is produced using a combination of density profile control consistent with pellet fueling and reduced stiffness to turbulent transport via three-dimensional shaping. Transport simulations with the T3D-GX-SFINCS code suite with self-consistent turbulent and neoclassical transport predict that the Pfus = 800 MW operating point is attainable with high fusion gain (Q = 40) at volume-averaged electron densities ne ≈ 2×1020 m−3, below the Sudo density limit. Additional transport calculations show that an ignited (Q = ∞) solution is available at slightly higher density (2.2×1020 m−3) with Pfus = 1.5 GW. The magnetic configuration is defined by a magnetic coil set with sufficient room for an island divertor, shielding and blanket solutions with tritium breeding ratios (TBR) above unity. An optimistic estimate for the gas-cooled solid breeder designed Helium Cooled Pebble Bed is TBR ∼ 1.3. Infinity Two satisfies the physics requirements of a stellarator fusion pilot plant.

In this work, we present a detailed assessment of fusion-born alpha-particle confinement, their wall loads, and stability of Alfvén eigenmodes driven by these energetic particles in the Infinity Two Fusion Pilot Plant Baseline Plasma Design, a 4-field-period quasiisodynamic stellarator to operate in deuterium-tritium fusion conditions. Using the Monte-Carlo codes SIMPLE, ASCOT5, and KORC-T, we study the collisionless and collisional dynamics of guiding-center and full-orbit alpha-particles in the core plasma. We find that core energy losses to the wall are less than 4%. Our simulations shows that peak power loads on the wall of this configuration are around 2.5 MW/m2 and are spatially localized, toroidally, and poloidaly in the vicinity of x-points of the magnetic island chain n/m = 4/5 outside the plasma volume. Also, an exploratory analysis using various simplified walls shows that shaping and distance of the wall from the plasma volume can help reduce peak power loads. Our stability assessment of Alfvén eigenmodes using the STELLGAP and FAR3d codes shows the absence of unstable modes driven by alpha-particles in Infinity Two due to the relatively low alpha-particle beta at the envisioned 800 MW operating scenario.

Transport characteristics and predicted confinement are shown for the Infinity Two fusion pilot plant baseline plasma physics design, a high field stellarator concept developed using modern optimization techniques. Transport predictions are made using high fidelity nonlinear gyrokinetic turbulence simulations along with drift kinetic neoclassical simulations. A pellet fueled scenario is proposed that enables supporting an edge density gradient to substantially reduce ion temperature gradient turbulence. Trapped electron mode turbulence is minimized through the quasi-isodynamic configuration that has been optimized with max-J. A baseline operating point with deuterium-tritium fusion power of Pfus,DT = 800 MW with high fusion gain Qfus = 40 is demonstrated, respecting the Sudo density limit and magnetohydrodynamic stability limits. Additional higher power operating points are also predicted, including a fully ignited (Qfus = ∞) case with Pfus,DT = 1.5 GW. Pellet ablation calculations indicate it is plausible to fuel and sustain the desired density profile. Impurity transport calculations indicate turbulent fluxes dominate neoclassical fluxes deep into the core, and it is predicted that impurity peaking will be smaller than assumed in the transport simulations. A path to access large radiation fraction needed to satisfy exhaust requirements while sustaining core performance is also discussed.

The magneto-hydrodynamic equilibrium and stability properties of the Infinity Two Fusion Pilot Plant baseline plasma physics design are presented. The configuration is a four field period, aspect ratio A = 10 quasi-isodynamic stellarator optimized for excellent confinement at elevated density and high magnetic field B = 9 T. Magnetic surfaces exist in the plasma core in vacuum and retain good equilibrium surface integrity from vacuum to an operational β = 1.6%, the ratio of the volume average of the plasma and magnetic pressures, corresponding to 800 MW Deuterium-Tritium fusion operation. Neoclassical calculations show that a selfconsistent bootstrap current on the order of ∼ 1 kA slightly increases the rotational transform profile by less than 0.001. The configuration has a magnetic well across its entire radius. From vacuum to the operating point, the configuration exhibits good ballooning stability characteristics, exhibits good Mercier stability across most of its minor radius, and it is stable against global low-n MHD instabilities up to β = 3.2%.

The selection, design, and optimization of a suitable blanket configuration for an advanced high-field stellarator concept is seen as a key feasibility issue and has been incorporated as a vital and necessary part of the Infinity Two Fusion Pilot Plant (FPP) physics basis. The focus of this work was to identify a baseline blanket which can be rapidly deployed for Infinity Two while also maintaining flexibility and opportunities for higher performing concepts later in development. Results from this analysis indicate that gas-cooled solid breeder designs such as the Helium Cooled Pebble Bed (HCPB) are the most promising concepts, primarily motivated by the neutronics performance at applicable blanket build depths, and the relatively mature technology basis. The lithium lead (PbLi) family of concepts, particularly the Dual Cooled Lithium Lead (DCLL), offer a compelling alternative to solid blanket concepts as they have synergistic developmental pathways while simultaneously mitigating much of the technical risk of those designs. Homogenized 3-dimensional neutronics analysis of the Infinity Two configuration indicates that the HCPB achieves an adequate tritium breeding ratio (TBR) (1.30 which enables sufficient margin at low engineering fidelity), and near appropriate shielding of the magnets (average fast fluence of 1.3 x 1018 n/cm2 per fullpower year). The thermal analysis indicates that reasonably high thermal efficiencies (greater than 30%) are readily achievable with the HCPB paired with a simple Rankine cycle using reheat. Finally, the tritium fuel cycle analysis for Infinity Two shows viability, with anticipated operational inventories of less than one kilogram (approximately 675 grams) and a required TBR (TBRreq) of less than 1.05 to maintain fuel self-sufficiency (approximately 1.023 for a driver blanket with no inventory doubling). Although further optimization and engineering design is still required, at the physics basis stage all initial targets have been met for the Infinity Two configuration.

Each day a venous catheter is retained poses unnecessary safety risks. In a retrospective evaluation of central/peripheral lines in nursing home residents receiving antibiotics, 80% were retained beyond antibiotic treatment end and nearly one third were retained longer than a week. Interventions for timely catheter removal are urgently needed.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), considered as the hepatic component of the metabolic syndrome, is the leading cause of chronic liver disease around the world(1). The MASLD disease spectrum begins with isolated steatosis. A subset of patients will develop metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) which is characterized by steatosis and inflammation, resulting in hepatocyte injury with or without fibrosis. MASH is regarded as a progressive phenotype, as it can advance to cirrhosis and subsequently to hepatocellular carcinoma(2). Compared with fasting measurements alone, postprandial responses to nutrient challenges offer a greater insight into the phenotypic heterogeneity that occurs across health and disease(3). To better understand the phenotypes that occur across the spectrum of MASLD, we have characterized the postprandial metabolic and inflammatory responses to different dietary challenges in healthy individuals and patients with MASLD and MASH.

10 healthy individuals, 18 patients with MASLD, and 15 with MASH were recruited. Body composition was assessed using bioelectrical impedance analysis (Tanita). Liver fat and stiffness were measured by FibroScan in patients only. All participants completed a high fat mixed meal challenge containing 655kcals, 46g fat, 33g saturated fat, 50g carbohydrates, 45g sugar, and 10g protein. Patients with MASLD and MASH also completed a high-fructose challenge containing 400kcals, 75g fructose and 25g glucose. Fasting and postprandial blood samples were drawn at each challenge at 0, 30, 60, 90, 120, 180, 240 and 360-minutes. Glucose was measured in whole blood using a HemoCue Glucose 201+ analyzer. Serum insulin and plasma IL-6 and CRP will be measured by ELISA. Plasma triglycerides, non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), and glycerol will be measured by colorimetric assay.

Bodyweight (p = 0.0247), BMI (p = 0.0448), and hip circumference (p = 0.0237) were greater in MASH vs MASLD. Healthy participants had significantly lower bodyweight, BMI, and waist and hip circumferences vs both MASLD and MASH (p<0.0001 for each variable). Liver fat was similar between MASLD and MASH, whereas liver stiffness was greater in MASH (p<0.0001). Alanine transaminase (ALT) was increased in MASH vs MASLD (p = 0.0408), while concentrations of other liver enzymes were similar between groups. Total cholesterol (p = 0.0492) and LDL-cholesterol (p = 0.0197) were also higher in MASH vs MASLD, but there was no difference in triglyceride concentrations or HDL-cholesterol. There was a significant impact of group on glucose response to the HFMM (p = 0.0321), and glucose responses varied between the 3 groups across different time points (p<0.0001).

The HFMM, which is more representative of a typical meal, revealed glucose intolerance in MASLD and MASH which was also greater in MASLD. Analysis of the full cohort will enable greater characterization of the phenotypes that occur across the spectrum of MASLD.

Drip irrigation and mulching were tested to minimize unproductive water loss through evaporation and weed interference. A field experiment was conducted during spring season of 2020 and 2021 in split plot design with three replications. The study includes six treatment combinations of drip irrigation methods (surface drip and subsurface drip irrigation) and mulching (black plastic, paddy straw and no mulch) along with one conventional furrow irrigation without mulching (as control) in main plots. Four weed control treatments (atrazine 1000 g a.i./ha as pre-emergence, two hand weedings at 30 and 60 days after sowing [DAS], weed free and weedy for whole crop growth period) were kept in the subplots. The combination of drip irrigation and mulches significantly enhanced leaf area index and crop biomass at 60 DAS than furrow irrigation. Integration of subsurface drip irrigation with plastic mulching resulted in the lowest weed density and biomass among main plots. Drip irrigation coupled with plastic and straw mulching resulted in 86 and 50% reduction in weed density and biomass, respectively, as compared to no mulching. Integration of subsurface drip with paddy straw mulch and black plastic mulch resulted in 17.1 and 15.5% higher maize grain yield, respectively, as compared to furrow irrigation. The highest irrigation water productivity (3.58 kg/m3) was observed in combination of subsurface drip and paddy straw mulch followed by combination of subsurface drip and black plastic mulch (3.51 kg/m3). Overall, straw mulching in drip irrigation system proved economical in terms of maize productivity.

The aviation industry’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions have driven the rapid development and scale-up of sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs). SAFs have the potential to significantly reduce CO2 lifecycle emissions by up to 80% in comparison to Jet A and other conventional fossil-derived jet fuels. For multiple logistical and practical reasons, it is preferable to ensure that SAFs are ‘essentially identical’ (also referred to as ‘drop-in SAF’) to conventional jet fuel in terms of their performance, durability and compatibility with existing hardware systems. Because the majority of SAFs are not identical (non-drop-in) to conventional jet fuel, they have not been approved for use in their neat (100%) form. Instead, these non-identical SAFs are named synthetic blend components (SBC) as they are blended with conventional fuels to different extents per ASTM D7566-23a. It should be noted that there are on-going efforts to develop non-drop in SAF specifications to broaden their proliferation and maximise the aviation industries’ ability to reduce CO2 lifecycle emissions. One very important area of focus is the compatibility of SAFs with engine and fuel system seals, specifically understanding the dynamics of elastomeric seals. To address this, a novel approach has been developed to measure seal dynamics in flowing fuel. This technique has been applied to study the dynamic seal behaviour of four industrially relevant elastomer seals commonly employed in aviation fuel systems. The study involved three test fuels: (i) conventional fossil-derived Jet A, neat hydroprocessed esters and fatty acids (HEFA) SAF, and neat alcohol to jet (ATJ) SAF. Notably, both HEFA and ATJ fuels contain 0% aromatics, in contrast to Jet A, which typically contains around 17% aromatics by volume. The novel fuel-elastomer test rig used in this study was designed to simulate a practical scenario in which fuel flows through the inner surface of a pre-loaded static O-ring. The results of these tests demonstrate that the behaviour of different nitrile elastomers is unique to their formulation, and in all cases, the behaviour in HEFA and ATJ SAF differs significantly from that in Jet A. However, new fuel approval tests may only list one type of elastomer for evaluation, for example the ‘Fit-for-Purpose’ test in ASTM D4054-22 Tier 2 lists one specific nitrile. The findings of this study highlight the complexities of fuel-elastomer interactions within nominally identical chemical families and emphasise the potential risks of assessing compatibility based on tests conducted with a single member of a chemical family.

Exploration of the 21cm signal during the Cosmic Dawn and the Epoch of Reionisation (EoR) can unravel the mysteries of the early Universe when the first stars and galaxies were born and ionised, respectively. However, the 21 cm signal is exceptionally weak, and thus, the detection amidst the bright foregrounds is extremely challenging. The Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) aims to measure the brightness temperature fluctuations of neutral hydrogen from the early Universe. The MWA telescope observes the radio sky with a large field of view (FoV) that causes the bright galaxies, especially near the horizon, to contaminate the measurements. These foregrounds contaminating the EoR datasets must be meticulously removed or treated to detect the signal successfully. The Central Redundant Array Mega-tile (CRAM) is a zenith-pointing new instrument, installed at the centre of the MWA Phase II southern hexagonal configuration, comprising of 64 dipoles in an $8 \times 8$ configuration with a FoV half the width of the MWA’s at every frequency under consideration. The primary objective of this new instrument is to mitigate the impact of bright radio sources near the field centre in accordance with the reduced primary beamshape and to reduce the contamination of foreground sources near the horizon with the reduced sidelobe response of the larger array configuration. In this paper, we introduce the new instrument to the community and present the system architecture and characteristics of the instrument. Using the first light observations, we determine the CRAM system temperature and system performance.

We evaluated whether universal chlorhexidine bathing (decolonization) with or without COVID-19 intensive training impacted COVID-19 rates in 63 nursing homes (NHs) during the 2020–2021 Fall/Winter surge. Decolonization was associated with a 43% lesser rise in staff case-rates (P < .001) and a 52% lesser rise in resident case-rates (P < .001) versus control.

Tight focusing with very small f-numbers is necessary to achieve the highest at-focus irradiances. However, tight focusing imposes strong demands on precise target positioning in-focus to achieve the highest on-target irradiance. We describe several near-infrared, visible, ultraviolet and soft and hard X-ray diagnostics employed in a ∼1022 W/cm2 laser–plasma experiment. We used nearly 10 J total energy femtosecond laser pulses focused into an approximately 1.3-μm focal spot on 5–20 μm thick stainless-steel targets. We discuss the applicability of these diagnostics to determine the best in-focus target position with approximately 5 μm accuracy (i.e., around half of the short Rayleigh length) and show that several diagnostics (in particular, 3$\omega$ reflection and on-axis hard X-rays) can ensure this accuracy. We demonstrated target positioning within several micrometers from the focus, ensuring over 80% of the ideal peak laser intensity on-target. Our approach is relatively fast (it requires 10–20 laser shots) and does not rely on the coincidence of low-power and high-power focal planes.

Because of the large surface area and common occurrence of smectites in the clay fractions, they are important in sorption/desorption reactions of organic pollutants entering soils and sediments. Results of sorption and desorption of atrazine by Al- and Ca-saturated smectite reported here showed that Al-saturated smectite sorbed much higher amounts of atrazine than Ca-saturated smectite. Al-saturated smectite sorbed 3820 mg kg−1 as compared to 1902 mg kg−1 by the Ca-saturated smectite during 5 consecutive sorptions from 10 ppm atrazine solution. Sorption isotherms over 2–10 ppm atrazine concentration range were nonlinear in all cases. Freundich coefficients, Kf, obtained from the sorption isotherms were much higher for Al- than Ca-saturated smectite; Kf varied from 405 to 3035 for Al-saturated and 100 to 306 for Ca-saturated. The pH values of Al- and Ca-saturated smectites were 3–4 units higher than the pKa (1.68) of atrazine, which suggests that atrazine was sorbed as neutral molecules. Stronger H-bonding between the more polarized H2O associated with the trivalent Al ion than the divalent Ca ion is likely responsible for the greater sorption by Al-smectite.

Quinclorac controls crabgrass (Digitaria spp.) in cool- and warm-season turfgrass species. Herbicide-resistant smooth crabgrass [Digitaria ischaemum (Schreb.) Schreb. ex Muhl.] biotypes have evolved due to recurrent usage of quinclorac. Two Mississippi populations (MSU1 and MSU2) of D. ischaemum were characterized using standard greenhouse dose–response screens to assess their resistance relative to known susceptible populations. Subsequent investigations explored mechanisms of resistance, including examining cyanide accumulation, glutathione S-transferase (GST) activity, and the potential involvement of cytochrome P450s in MSU1, MSU2, and a susceptible (SMT2). Resistant populations MSU1 and MSU2 required 80 and 5 times more quinclorac, respectively, to reach 50% biomass reduction than susceptible populations. The SMT2 biotype accumulated three times more cyanide than the resistant MSU1 and MSU2 populations. GST activity was elevated in resistant MSU1 and MSU2 populations. Furthermore, quinclorac concentrations in treated resistant populations were elevated when plants were pretreated with the P450 inhibitor malathion. These findings suggest a non–target site based mechanism of resistance involving the accumulation of cyanide. This may provide a scientific basis for understanding the occurrence of quinclorac-resistant D. ischaemum, although further research is needed to investigate potential target-site mechanisms of resistance.

In India, undernutrition among children has been extremely critical for the last few decades. Most analyses of undernutrition among Indian children have used the administrative boundaries of a state or a district level as a unit of analysis. This paper departs from such a practice and focuses instead on the political boundaries of a parliamentary constituency (PC) as the unit of analysis. The PC is a critical geopolitical unit where political parties and party candidates make election promises and implement programmes to improve the socio-economic condition of their electorate. A focus on child undernutrition at this level has the potential for greater policy and political traction and could lead to a paradigm shift in the strategy to tackle the problem by creating a demand for political accountability. Different dimensions and new approaches are also required to evaluate the socio-economic status and generate concrete evidence to find solutions to the problem. Given the significance of advanced analytical methods and models embedded into geographic information system (GIS), the current study, for the first time, uses GIS tools and techniques at the PC level, conducting in-depth analysis of undernutrition and its predictors. Hence, this paper examines the spatial heterogeneity in undernutrition across PCs by using geospatial techniques such as univariate and bivariate local indicator of spatial association and spatial regression models. The analysis highlights the high–low burden areas in terms of local hotspots and identifies the potential spatial risk factors of undernutrition across the constituencies. Striking variations in the prevalence of undernutrition across the constituencies were observed. Most of these constituencies that performed poorly both in terms of child nutrition and socio-economic indicators were located in the northern, western, and eastern parts of India. A statistically significant association of biological, socio-economic, and environmental factors such as women’s body mass index, anaemia in children, poverty, household sanitation facilities, and institutional births was established. The results highlight the need to bring in a mechanism of political accountability that directly connects elected representatives to maternal and child health outcomes. The spatial variability and pattern of undernutrition indicators and their correlates indicate that priority setting in research may also be greatly influenced by the neighbourhood association.

Adequate nutrition is necessary during childhood and early adolescence for adequate growth and development. Hence, the objective of the study was to assess the association between dietary intake and blood levels of minerals (calcium, iron, zinc, and selenium) and vitamins (folate, vitamin B12, vitamin A, and vitamin D) in urban school going children aged 6–16 years in India, in a multicentric cross-sectional study. Participants were enrolled from randomly selected schools in ten cities. Three-day food intake data was collected using a 24-h dietary recall method. The intake was dichotomised into adequate and inadequate. Blood samples were collected to assess levels of micronutrients. From April 2019 to February 2020, 2428 participants (50⋅2 % females) were recruited from 60 schools. Inadequate intake for calcium was in 93⋅4 % (246⋅5 ± 149⋅4 mg), iron 86⋅5 % (7⋅6 ± 3⋅0 mg), zinc 84⋅0 % (3⋅9 ± 2⋅4 mg), selenium 30⋅2 % (11⋅3 ± 9⋅7 mcg), folate 73⋅8 % (93⋅6 ± 55⋅4 mcg), vitamin B12 94⋅4 % (0⋅2 ± 0⋅4 mcg), vitamin A 96⋅0 % (101⋅7 ± 94⋅1 mcg), and vitamin D 100⋅0 % (0⋅4 ± 0⋅6 mcg). Controlling for sex and socioeconomic status, the odds of biochemical deficiency with inadequate intake for iron [AOR = 1⋅37 (95 % CI 1⋅07–1⋅76)], zinc [AOR = 5⋅14 (95 % CI 2⋅24–11⋅78)], selenium [AOR = 3⋅63 (95 % CI 2⋅70–4⋅89)], folate [AOR = 1⋅59 (95 % CI 1⋅25–2⋅03)], and vitamin B12 [AOR = 1⋅62 (95 %CI 1⋅07–2⋅45)]. Since there is a significant association between the inadequate intake and biochemical deficiencies of iron, zinc, selenium, folate, and vitamin B12, regular surveillance for adequacy of micronutrient intake must be undertaken to identify children at risk of deficiency, for timely intervention.

Background: Multimodal approaches are often used to prevent transmission of antimicrobial-resistant pathogens among patients in healthcare settings; understanding the effect of individual interventions is challenging. We designed a model to compare the effectiveness of hand hygiene (HH) with or without decolonization in reducing patient colonization with carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE). Methods: We developed an agent-based model to represent transmission of CRE in an acute-care hospital comprising 3 general wards and 2 ICUs, each with 20 single-occupancy rooms, located in a community of 85,000 people. The model accounted for the movement of healthcare personnel (HCP), including their visits to patients. CRE dynamics were modeled using a susceptible–infectious–susceptible framework with transmission occurring via HCP–patient contacts. The mean time to clearance of CRE colonization without intervention was 387 days (Zimmerman et al, 2013). Our baseline included a facility-level HH compliance of 30%, with an assumed efficacy of 50%. Contact precautions were employed for patients with CRE-positive cultures with assumed adherence and efficacy of 80% and 50%, respectively. Intervention scenarios included decolonization of culture-positive CRE patients, with a mean time to decolonization of 3 days. We considered 2 hypothetical intervention scenarios: (A) decolonization of patients with the baseline HH compliance and (B) decolonization with a slightly improved HH compliance of 35%. The hospital-level CRE incidence rate was used to compare the results from these intervention scenarios. Results: CRE incidence rates were lower in intervention scenarios than the baseline scenario (Fig. 1). The baseline mean incidence rate was 29.1 per 10,000 patient days. For decolonization with the baseline HH, the mean incidence rate decreased to 14.5 per 10,000 patient days, which is a 50.2% decrease relative to the baseline incidence (Table 1). The decolonization scenario with a slightly improved HH compliance of 35% produced a relative reduction of 71.9% relative to the baseline incidence. Conclusions: Our analysis shows that decolonization, combined with modest improvement in HH compliance, could lead to large decreases in pathogen transmission. In turn, this model implies that efforts to identify and improve decolonization strategies for better patient safety in health care may be needed and are worth exploring.
