The authors developed a Behler–Parrinello-type neural network (NN) to improve the density-functional tight-binding (DFTB) energy and force prediction. The Δ-machine learning approach was adopted and the NN was designed to predict the energy differences between the density functional theory (DFT) quantum chemical potential and DFTB for a given molecular structure. Most notably, the DFTB-NN method is capable of improving the energetics of intramolecular hydrogen bonds and torsional potentials without modifying the framework of DFTB itself. This improvement enables considerably larger simulations of complex chemical systems that currently could not easily been accomplished using DFT or higher level ab initio quantum chemistry methods alone.

The origin of ionic conductivity in bulk lithium lanthanum titanate, a promising solid electrolyte for Li-ion batteries, has long been under debate, with experiments showing lower conductivity than predictions. Using first-principles-based calculations, we find that experimentally observed type I boundaries are more stable compared with the type II grain boundaries, consistent with their observed relative abundance. Grain boundary stability appears to strongly anti-correlate with the field strength as well as the spatial extent of the space charge region. Ion migration is faster along type II grain boundaries than across, consistent with recent experiments of increased conductivity when type II densities were increased.

In the spirit of the theoretical evolution from the Helmholtz model to the Gouy–Chapman–Stern model for electric double-layer capacitors, we explored the effect of a diffuse layer on the capacitance of mesoporous carbon supercapacitors by solving the Poisson–Boltzmann (PB) equation in mesopores of diameters from 2 to 20 nm. To evaluate the effect of pore shape, both slit and cylindrical pores were considered. We found that the diffuse layer does not affect the capacitance significantly. For slit pores, the area-normalized capacitance is nearly independent of pore size, which is not experimentally observed for template carbons. In comparison, for cylindrical pores, PB simulations produce a trend of slightly increasing area-normalized capacitance with pore size, similar to that depicted by the electric double-cylinder capacitor model proposed earlier. These results indicate that it is appropriate to approximate the pore shape of mesoporous carbons as being cylindrical and the electric double-cylinder capacitor model should be used for mesoporous carbons as a replacement of the traditional Helmholtz model.

Capacitive energy storage mechanisms in nanoporous carbon supercapacitors hinge on endohedral interactions in carbon materials with macro-, meso-, and micropores that have negative surface curvature. In this article, we show that because of the positive curvature found in zero-dimensional carbon onions or one-dimensional carbon nanotube arrays, exohedral interactions cause the normalized capacitance to increase with decreasing particle size or tube diameter, in sharp contrast to the behavior of nanoporous carbon materials. This finding is in good agreement with the trend of recent experimental data. Our analysis suggests that electrical energy storage can be improved by exploiting the highly curved surfaces of carbon nanotube arrays with diameters on the order of 1 nm.

First principles calculations using density functional theory (DFT) are reported for two layers of methane adsorbed on the (100) surface of MgO. The lowest energy structure determined has a first layer with C2v methanes adsorbed above magnesium atoms, with hydrogen atoms pointed towards neighboring oxygen atoms, and a rotation of 90° in between each neighboring methane. The second layer methane layer has a similar structure, except the hydrogen atoms are directed towards nearest neighbor magnesium atoms. It is found that the structure of the first layer has a large effect on the relative energies of proposed bilayer structures, as does the calculated separation between the two layers of methane. Competing roles of surface-adsorbate and adsorbate-adsorbate interactions are also discussed.

Dipole emission pattern imaging experiments on single chains of common conjugated polymers (solubilized poly phenylene vinylenes) isolated by ink-jet printing techniques have revealed surprising uniformity in transition moment orientation perpendicular to the support substrate. In addition to uniform orientation, these species show a number of striking differences in photochemical stability, polarization anisotropy,[1] and spectral signatures[2] with respect to similar (well-studied) molecules dispersed in dilute thin-films. Combined with molecular mechanics simulation, these results point to a structural picture of a folded macromolecule as a highly ordered cylindrical nanostructure whose long-axis (approximately collinear with the conjugation axis) is oriented, by an electrostatic interaction, perpendicular to the coverglass substrate. These results suggest a number of important applications in nanoscale photonics and molecular-scale optoelectronics.

Molecular dynamics simulations have been used to study the pyrolysis of eicosane (C2042 both in the gas phase and when confined to the interior of a (7,7) carbon nanotube. A reactive bond-order potential was used to model the thermal decomposition of covalent bonds. The unimolecular dissociation is first-order in both cases. The decomposition kinetics demonstrate Arrhenius temperature dependence, with similar activation barriers in both geometries. The decomposition rate is slower by approximately 30% in the confined system. This rate decrease is observed to be a result of recombination reactions due to collisions with the nanotube wall.

Molecular dynamics simulations of ethylene polymerization have been performed using a chemically realistic, reactive potential. These simulations have been performed in the bulk liquid and in the interior of both (10,10) and (7,7) nanotubes as a means of investigating the effects of nanoscale confinement on the polymerization reaction. The structure of the resulting polymer was found to be similar in the bulk and in the (10,10) tube at the elevated temperatures investigated, while only very small oligomers were formed in the (7,7) tube. The reaction rate was substantially reduced in the nanotubes, when compared to the bulk, primarily as a result of spatial interference due to reaction products. These simulations have implications for the possible use of nanotubes as synthetic reaction vessels, as well as for the general understanding of association reactions in confined spaces.
