  • Summary

    Chapter 14 addresses the relationships between translation and gender and sexuality, which began to be discussed in translation studies in the 1980 by scholars often informed by feminist theory and by the minority rights and independence movements of the time. The chapter deals with translation and gender and with sexuality and translation in separate sections, to reflect the fact that gender identity and sexual orientation are not mutually determining. It surveys current research within those discrete but intersecting categories, before discussing emerging themes and future directions.

  • Objectives:

    The objective of this paper was to examine the implementation and effectiveness of a community-based intervention for hoarding disorder (HD) using Cognitive Rehabilitation and Exposure/Sorting Therapy (CREST).

    Design:

    This was a mixed-method, pre-post quasi-experimental study informed by the Practical, Robust Implementation and Sustainability Model for implementation science.

    Setting:

    Program activities took place in San Diego County, mainly within clients’ homes or community, with some activities in-office.

    Participants:

    Participants were aged 60 years or older, met eligibility for Medi-Cal or were uninsured, and met criteria for HD.

    Intervention:

    A manualized, mobile protocol that incorporated CREST was utilized.

    Measurements:

    The Clutter Image Rating and Hoarding Rating Scale were used as effectiveness outcomes. An investigator-created staff questionnaire was used to evaluate implementation.

    Results:

    Thirty-seven clients were reached and enrolled in treatment and 15 completed treatment during the initial 2 years of the program. There were significant changes in hoarding severity and clutter volume. Based on the initial 2 years of the program, funding was provided for expansion to cover additional San Diego County regions and hire more staff clinicians in year three.

    Conclusion:

    Preliminary data suggest that the CREST intervention can be successfully implemented in a community setting with positive results for older adults with HD.

  • Summary

    Marcel Proust's book is inhabited by many books, but the most important one is a vast essay on Eros. His materials are relationships between men and women, as in Swann in Love. In using the term sexual inversion, Proust alluded to a notion that was common enough at the time, namely that homosexual males were "inverted men". Homosexuality was felt by many to be a violation of the law of God and the law of Nature, even an affront to the mental health of the nation. In the circles in which Proust moved, especially as a young man, many people understood perfectly well that he had close relationships with men. But he wanted at all costs to avoid being labeled a "homosexual". A striking feature of Proust's novel is perhaps not that it pays a great deal of attention to male homosexuality but rather its passionate interest in lesbianism.

  • This article examines the workings of the sexual closet within the enormously popular genre of the Russian detektiv, or detective story. Informed by the work of Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick and D. A. Miller, the article focuses on the dramatization of homosexual panic among various male characters in Aleksandra Marinina's Stilist (1996) and Boris Akunin's Koronatsiia (2001) in order to explore the experience of masculine subjectivity in post-Soviet culture. In both novels, a perceived crisis in patriarchal authority unleashes suspicions and anxieties regarding the experience of being and becoming a man, which is defined against the feminine and the homosexual. Figured both as an effect of and as a threat to male-male bonds, homosexual panic testifies to the interiorization of sexual and gender norms, which makes being male a highly self-conscious enterprise and fuels nostalgia for a mythic time before the appearance of homosexuality.
