The number of people following a plant-based (PB) diet has increased in recent years. This has led to concerns regarding vitamin D intake, as natural dietary sources of vitamin D are primarily animal based(1) and cross-sectional studies have reported lower intakes amongst vegetarians and vegans(2). Some PB foods, primarily dairy alternatives, are now fortified with vitamin D. Whilst vitamin D is synthesised in the skin following exposure to UV light, this does not happen in the autumn and winter months in areas of northern latitude (such as the UK). Hence, dietary supply of vitamin D becomes particularly important. This study aimed to investigate whether it is possible to maintain dietary vitamin D intake when transitioning to a PB diet, through careful choice of PB alternatives.

A subset of 4-day diet diaries, from 81 women (72 Caucasian and 9 South Asian, mean age 52 ± 12y) living in South East England, was randomly selected from those collected for the D-FINES study (Vitamin D, Food Intake, Nutrition and Exposure to Sunlight in Southern England, 2006–2007; FSA funded Project N05064, NHS REC 06/Q1909/1)(3)and analysed for vitamin D intake. No subjects followed an entirely PB diet at baseline. Data modelling was carried out to substitute animal-based foods with equivalent amounts of PB alternatives. For dairy products, the equivalent fortified PB alternatives were chosen. Meat, fish and eggs were replaced with equivalent amounts of protein from PB sources, such as lentils and tofu, as no fortified direct alternatives were found. The diaries were then re-analysed. Pre- and post-substitution intakes were compared by paired t test, and ethnic groups by independent t test.

There were no differences in Vitamin D intake between ethnicities either at baseline (p = 0.087) or post-substitution (p = 0.361). Vitamin D intake increased in the South Asian group post-substitution (from 2.4 ± 1.3 to 4.3 ± 1.8 µg/day, p = 0.002), with no change observed in the Caucasian group (3.6 ± 2.0 to 3.7 ± 1.8 µg/day, p = 0.660). There was no difference between vitamin D intake pre- and post-substitution overall (3.5 ± 2.0 and 3.8 ± 1.8 µg/day respectively, p = 0.222). Twenty cases decreased by ≥1 µg/day, all in the Caucasian group, with the largest decrease being from 9.6 to 2.2 µg/day.

This study demonstrates that it is possible to move to a PB diet, whilst maintaining existing dietary patterns, without a reduction in vitamin D intake, but it is largely dependent on dairy intake in the original diet, as no meat/fish substitutes in the UK are currently fortified. It also requires care when choosing PB dairy substitutions as many, including organic options, are not fortified. Mean daily intakes, both pre- and post-substitution, were substantially below the recommended intake of 10 µg/day(4), suggesting that supplementation may be necessary, particularly during winter months.

The continued development of herbicide-resistant weeds, such as Palmer amaranth, represents a growing concern across the United States Cotton Belt. To mitigate this issue, BASF Corp. developed Axant™ Flex cotton, the first quadruple-stacked herbicide resistance germplasm to improve the control of troublesome weed species in cotton. Field studies were conducted in 2022 and 2023 at the Texas Tech University Research Farm near New Deal, TX, to evaluate the response of Axant Flex cotton to topramezone applied alone or in combinations when applied to three-leaf cotton (early-postemergence or EPOST) or to seven-leaf cotton (mid-postemergence or MPOST). No difference in cotton stand was observed between isoxaflutole or prometryn preemergence treatments compared to the nontreated control. In 2022, no EPOST treatment caused greater than 6% crop response at 7 and 14 d after application (DAA). When treatments were made to seven-leaf cotton, crop response did not exceed 18% at 7 and 14 DAA. In 2023, crop response was ≤2% at 28 DAA regardless of application timing. No differences in lint yield were observed following any herbicide treatment when compared to the nontreated control in either year. Additionally, fiber length and strength were not adversely affected by treatments containing topramezone EPOST or MPOST in 2022 and 2023. These results support the potential use of topramezone in Axant Flex cotton to help manage troublesome weeds without detrimental effects on yield and fiber quality.

State Medical Boards (SMBs) can take severe disciplinary actions (e.g., license revocation or suspension) against physicians who commit egregious wrongdoing in order to protect the public. However, there is noteworthy variability in the extent to which SMBs impose severe disciplinary action. In this manuscript, we present and synthesize a subset of 11 recommendations based on findings from our team’s larger consensus-building project that identified a list of 56 policies and legal provisions SMBs can use to better protect patients from egregious wrongdoing by physicians.

The southern United States produces 90% of the nation’s cotton, and the Texas High Plains is the largest contiguous cotton producing region. Since 2011, glyphosate-resistant Palmer amaranth has complicated cotton production, and alternatives to glyphosate are needed. Integrating soil residual herbicides into a weed management program is a crucial step to control glyphosate resistant weeds before emergence. The recent development of p-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD)-resistant cotton by BASF Corporation may allow growers to use isoxaflutole in future weed management programs. In 2019 and 2020, field experiments were conducted in New Deal, Lubbock, and Halfway, Texas, to evaluate HPPD-resistant cotton response to isoxaflutole applied preemergence (PRE) or early postemergence (EPOST) and to determine the efficacy of isoxaflutole when used as part of a season-long weed management program. At the New Deal location, cotton response was observed following the EPOST application, but it never exceeded 10%. Cotton response was greatest following the PRE application in Lubbock in 2019 but did not exceed 14%. In 2020 in Lubbock, cotton was replanted due to severe weather. There was <1% cotton response following the PRE application, and maximum cotton response observed was 9% following EPOST and mid-postemergence (MPOST) applications. Cotton lint yields were not different from those of the nontreated, weed-free control at either location. In non-crop weed control studies in Halfway, all treatments controlled Palmer amaranth ≥94% 21 d after the EPOST application. Twenty-one days after the MPOST treatment, systems with isoxaflutole applied EPOST controlled Palmer amaranth by 88% to 93%, while systems with isoxaflutole PRE controlled Palmer amaranth by 94% to 98%. End-of-season Palmer amaranth control was lowest in the system without isoxaflutole (88%) and when isoxaflutole was used EPOST (88% to 91%). These studies suggest that the use of isoxaflutole in cotton weed management systems may improve season-long control of several troublesome weeds with no adverse effects on cotton yield and quality.

We describe techniques for constructing models of size continuum in ω steps by simultaneously building a perfect set of enmeshed countable Henkin sets. Such models have perfect, asymptotically similar subsets. We survey applications involving Borel models, atomic models, two-cardinal transfers and models respecting various closure relations.

Low energy and protein intakes have been associated with an increased risk of malnutrition in outpatients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). We aimed to assess the energy and protein intakes of hospitalised COPD patients according to nutritional risk status and requirements, and the relative contribution from meals, snacks, drinks and oral nutritional supplements (ONS), and to examine whether either energy or protein intake predicts outcomes. Subjects were COPD patients (n 99) admitted to Landspitali University Hospital in 1 year (March 2015–March 2016). Patients were screened for nutritional risk using a validated screening tool, and energy and protein intake for 3 d, 1–5 d after admission to the hospital, was estimated using a validated plate diagram sheet. The percentage of patients reaching energy and protein intake ≥75 % of requirements was on average 59 and 37 %, respectively. Malnourished patients consumed less at mealtimes and more from ONS than lower-risk patients, resulting in no difference in total energy and protein intakes between groups. No clear associations between energy or protein intake and outcomes were found, although the association between energy intake, as percentage of requirement, and mortality at 12 months of follow-up was of borderline significance (OR 0·12; 95 % CI 0·01, 1·15; P=0·066). Energy and protein intakes during hospitalisation in the study population failed to meet requirements. Further studies are needed on how to increase energy and protein intakes during hospitalisation and after discharge and to assess whether higher intake in relation to requirement of hospitalised COPD patients results in better outcomes.

Field studies were conducted from 1985 to 1989 on a Sharkey clay to examine injury to a semi-dwarf rice cultivar, ‘Lemont’, from triclopyr or triclopyr plus propanil. Triclopyr applied in the booting stage reduced yield two of three years, with the observed yield reduction possibly caused by epinasty of the rice flag leaf. Triclopyr application to three- to four-leaf rice caused hyponasty. Triclopyr did not reduce plant height, seed weight, germination, or total milling yield. Triclopyr plus propanil caused more leaf burn that triclopyr alone, but yields were not reduced compared with the untreated control. This research indicated that triclopyr and triclopyr plus propanil can be used in rice production with the semi-dwarf cultivar, Lemont, with the potential to minimize drift to non-target crops due to the greater flexibility in application timing compared with 2,4-D application.

In crop/weed interactions a method is needed to reduce the complex data derived from interference research to a simple form which can be utilized immediately. A response surface technique was utilized in analyses involving densities, duration of interference, interference abilities of different species, and weed growth rates. At high weed densities interfering for long durations, multispecies interference is not additive but at low densities additiveness is approached. Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] yield loss from multispecies weed interference was calculated by subtracting the percent yield loss from the most competitive weed and then repeating the same procedure for remaining weeds. Interference data for weed species in which fewer data were available were determined by linear interpolation for densities of more comprehensively researched, closely related species. Polynominal regression curves were utilized to predict weed age and future weed size from weed height. These analyses can produce information to assist soybean producers in recognizing economically detrimental threshold levels of weed infestations which require the initiation of control measures.
