In this article, we examine how weather variables affect markets for U.S. high-end wines, both luxury wines and wines from the same region that are still high-end but not in the very limited highest category. Specifically, we compare so-called “cult wines” with “non-cult wines” from the same subregions that are known for their high-quality wines. We investigate associations between weather conditions and prices, price gaps (the difference between the secondary market price and release price), the number of cases produced, and wine scores assigned for both cult and non-cult wines. We further examine whether associations with weather differ across wine regions. Implementing a fixed-effects methodology, cult and non-cult wines from three U.S. regions were studied: both Napa and Sonoma in California, and Walla Walla on the border of Washington State and Oregon. Overall, the analysis suggests that weather is associated with various characteristics of wine markets, including prices, price gaps for cult wines, wine scores, and cases produced. The nature of the associations depends on the type of wine (cult or non-cult, red or white) and timing of weather conditions throughout the year and growing region.

Dilute aqueous solutions of quinoline were contacted with Na-montmorillonite to elucidate the sorption process of the neutral and protonated species. Sorption occurs via a combination of ion exchange and molecular adsorption and yields S-type isotherms. Exchange between the quinolinium ion (QH+) and Na can be described by means of Vanselow selectivity coefficients and a thermodynamic exchange constant (Kex). Due to the apparent adsorption of the neutral species at high mole fractions (x) of the solid phase, the thermodynamic standard state was defined as 0.5 mole fraction. The selectivity at pH ~4.95 of the QH+ species over Na (at XQH+ = 0.5) was determined to be Kv = 340. At pH ≥ 5.5 surface mole fractions of 0.5 could not be obtained without adsorption of the neutral species. This study suggests that at dilute solution concentrations quinoline is sorbed preferentially as the cation even at pHs ≫ pKa. A critical surface-solution concentration is apparently necessary for adsorption of the neutral species.

Deposits of at least three glaciations are present in New Jersey and the New York City area. The oldest deposits are magnetically reversed. Pollen and stratigraphic relations suggest that they are from the earliest Laurentide advance at ~2.4 Ma. Deposits of a second advance are overlain by peat dated to 41 ka and so are pre-Marine Isotope Stage (pre-MIS) 2. Their relation to marine deposits indicates that they predate MIS 5 but postdate MIS 11 and may postdate MIS 7 or 9, suggesting an MIS 6 age. The most recent deposits are of MIS 2 (last glacial maximum [LGM]) age. Radiocarbon dates and varve counts tied to glacial-lake events indicate that LGM ice arrived at its terminus at 25 ka, stood at the terminus until ~24 ka, retreated at a rate of 80 m/yr until 23.5 ka, and then retreated at a rate of 12 m/yr to 18 ka. At 18 ka the retreat record connects to the base of the North American Varve Chronology at Newburgh, New York. The 25–24 ka age for the LGM is slightly younger than, but within the uncertainty of, cosmogenic ages; it is significantly older than the oldest dated macrofossils in postglacial deposits in the region.

The concentration of radiocarbon (14C) differs between ocean and atmosphere. Radiocarbon determinations from samples which obtained their 14C in the marine environment therefore need a marine-specific calibration curve and cannot be calibrated directly against the atmospheric-based IntCal20 curve. This paper presents Marine20, an update to the internationally agreed marine radiocarbon age calibration curve that provides a non-polar global-average marine record of radiocarbon from 0–55 cal kBP and serves as a baseline for regional oceanic variation. Marine20 is intended for calibration of marine radiocarbon samples from non-polar regions; it is not suitable for calibration in polar regions where variability in sea ice extent, ocean upwelling and air-sea gas exchange may have caused larger changes to concentrations of marine radiocarbon. The Marine20 curve is based upon 500 simulations with an ocean/atmosphere/biosphere box-model of the global carbon cycle that has been forced by posterior realizations of our Northern Hemispheric atmospheric IntCal20 14C curve and reconstructed changes in CO2 obtained from ice core data. These forcings enable us to incorporate carbon cycle dynamics and temporal changes in the atmospheric 14C level. The box-model simulations of the global-average marine radiocarbon reservoir age are similar to those of a more complex three-dimensional ocean general circulation model. However, simplicity and speed of the box model allow us to use a Monte Carlo approach to rigorously propagate the uncertainty in both the historic concentration of atmospheric 14C and other key parameters of the carbon cycle through to our final Marine20 calibration curve. This robust propagation of uncertainty is fundamental to providing reliable precision for the radiocarbon age calibration of marine based samples. We make a first step towards deconvolving the contributions of different processes to the total uncertainty; discuss the main differences of Marine20 from the previous age calibration curve Marine13; and identify the limitations of our approach together with key areas for further work. The updated values for ΔR, the regional marine radiocarbon reservoir age corrections required to calibrate against Marine20, can be found at the data base http://calib.org/marine/.

Tests of both structure and function of the corpus callosum have revealed abnormalities in schizophrenic patients. One such functional test employed lateralised Stroop stimuli presented tachistoscopically, to measure the transfer of interference and facilitation between the cerebral hemispheres. An attempt was made to relate indices of callosal transfer to clinical and demographic variables, including family history, as well as to indices of brain morphology. The latter included ventricle: brain ratio (VBR) measured by computed tomography (CT) scanning on 31 DSMIII schizophrenics, and the cross-sectional area of the corpus callosum from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), obtained from 20 of these patients. VBR did not relate to functional measures; however, anterior callosal area correlated with indices of callosal connectivity. Patients with auditory hallucinations had smaller anterior callosal areas and tended to show less connectivity. The results show links between functional and structural measures of the corpus callosum, but their precise nature remains unclear.

We describe an ultra-wide-bandwidth, low-frequency receiver recently installed on the Parkes radio telescope. The receiver system provides continuous frequency coverage from 704 to 4032 MHz. For much of the band ( ${\sim}60\%$ ), the system temperature is approximately 22 K and the receiver system remains in a linear regime even in the presence of strong mobile phone transmissions. We discuss the scientific and technical aspects of the new receiver, including its astronomical objectives, as well as the feed, receiver, digitiser, and signal processor design. We describe the pipeline routines that form the archive-ready data products and how those data files can be accessed from the archives. The system performance is quantified, including the system noise and linearity, beam shape, antenna efficiency, polarisation calibration, and timing stability.

OBJECTIVES/SPECIFIC AIMS: Objective: The Rockefeller University Center for Clinical and Translational Science (RU-CCTS), Clinical Directors Network (CDN), and Carter Burden Network (CBN), a multisite senior services organization serving East Harlem, NY, formed a community-academic partnership to examine the use of a simple validated surrogate measure of overall health status and frailty in this population. Many CBN seniors are racial/ethnic minorities, low-income, and suffer from multiple chronic conditions, depression and food insecurity. Multiple biological, musculoskeletal, psychosocial and nutritional factors contribute to frailty, which has been defined variously in senior health outcomes research. The CTSA-funded Pilot Project aims to: (1) Engage CBN seniors and stakeholders in priority-setting, joint protocol development, research conduct, analysis, and dissemination; (2) Characterize the health status of the CBN seniors using validated measures; (3) Establish database infrastructure for current and future research; (4) Understand how health and senior activities information can be used to create programs to improve senior health. METHODS/STUDY POPULATION: Methods: (1) CEnR-Navigation, a collaborative program/process that consists of semistructured meetings and activities facilitated by expert Navigators, was used for partnership development and to engage Carter Burden seniors to refine priorities and research questions, provide feedback on study design and conduct, and analyze and disseminate results. (2) Standard physical measurements and validated survey instruments were used to collect health information; target enrollment is 240 seniors across 2 sites (1 hosted within a subsidized housing facility and Social Model Adult Day Program). (3) A REDCap-based platform was designed for data capture and import. Individual attendance at senior activities for the prior year was extracted from existing records. The primary outcome is frailty, as measured by validated walk/balance tests (Short Physical Performance Battery). Secondary outcomes include measures of engagement, and association of use of services/activities with the primary outcome. RESULTS/ANTICIPATED RESULTS: (1) In total, 29 residents and 14 other stakeholders engaged in partnership-building, study design and implementation. (2) From May to November 2017, 98 participants were enrolled from site 1 (a residential site). Enrollment at site 2 (a senior center), begun in November, is projected for February completion. Characteristics of site 1 participants: median age=63.6 years; Hispanic, 44.90% (44); White, 13.89% (10), Black, 62.50% (45); Asian, 4.17% (3); American Indian or Alaskan Native, 2.78% (2), and Other, 16.67% (12). Educational attainment: 51.04% (49) had not completed high school; 19.79% (19) were high school graduates; 18.75% (18) completed some college, and 10.42% (10) were college graduates. For the 85 participants reporting annual income: 64.71% (55) reported <$10,000; 28.24% (24) reported $10,000–$15,000; 7.06% (6) were among the ranges from $15,000 to $50,000. The average body mass index (BMI) was 30, which is obese. For 83.67% (82) of site 1 participants, the BMI was in the range of overweight or obese. Half of participants (49) reported health literacy barriers in the Single Item Health Literacy Survey. Demographics and Frailty assessments (walk and balance tests) for participants enrolled at both sites will be reported. (3) Activity participation data for July 2016–November 2017 were recovered for 507 sessions at site 1 and are being analyzed. DISCUSSION/SIGNIFICANCE OF IMPACT: Here we report progress in developing a sustainable community-academic partnership, infrastructure and research capacity with the CBN senior services organization, and characterizing this at-risk population, of whom 71% have a high school education or less, 93% live in extreme poverty, and 84% are overweight or obese. A simple validated frailty measure in seniors will enable the acceleration of community-based translational research addressing senior health, and examine changes in this measure in relationship to the utilization of senior services.

Research focus in recent years on magnetic behaviour of transition metal (TM) ions embedded in semiconductors has shifted from intrinsic effects to extrinsic effects such as the formation of nanoclusters of the TM ions and the influence of the host matrix on their magnetic behaviour. Our studies, using conversion electron Mössbauer Spectroscopy and magnetization measurements, on SiO2 and Al2O3 substrates implanted with 4 at. % Fe, show ferromagnetic behaviour of α-Fe clusters in amorphous SiO2, but α-Fe2O3 clusters displaying superparamagnetic relaxation in crystalline Al2O3.

Objectives: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) disproportionately affects Hispanics/Latinos in the United States, yet little is known about neurocognitive impairment (NCI) in this group. We compared the rates of NCI in large well-characterized samples of HIV-infected (HIV+) Latinos and (non-Latino) Whites, and examined HIV-associated NCI among subgroups of Latinos. Methods: Participants included English-speaking HIV+ adults assessed at six U.S. medical centers (194 Latinos, 600 Whites). For overall group, age: M=42.65 years, SD=8.93; 86% male; education: M=13.17, SD=2.73; 54% had acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. NCI was assessed with a comprehensive test battery with normative corrections for age, education and gender. Covariates examined included HIV-disease characteristics, comorbidities, and genetic ancestry. Results: Compared with Whites, Latinos had higher rates of global NCI (42% vs. 54%), and domain NCI in executive function, learning, recall, working memory, and processing speed. Latinos also fared worse than Whites on current and historical HIV-disease characteristics, and nadir CD4 partially mediated ethnic differences in NCI. Yet, Latinos continued to have more global NCI [odds ratio (OR)=1.59; 95% confidence interval (CI)=1.13–2.23; p<.01] after adjusting for significant covariates. Higher rates of global NCI were observed with Puerto Rican (n=60; 71%) versus Mexican (n=79, 44%) origin/descent; this disparity persisted in models adjusting for significant covariates (OR=2.40; CI=1.11–5.29; p=.03). Conclusions: HIV+ Latinos, especially of Puerto Rican (vs. Mexican) origin/descent had increased rates of NCI compared with Whites. Differences in rates of NCI were not completely explained by worse HIV-disease characteristics, neurocognitive comorbidities, or genetic ancestry. Future studies should explore culturally relevant psychosocial, biomedical, and genetic factors that might explain these disparities and inform the development of targeted interventions. We developed a trade model under imperfect competition to analyze the market power of U.S. and Chinese apple producers in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) market and their domestic markets and the elimination of ASEAN tariffs on U.S. and Chinese apples. We also formulated welfare functions for the United States, China, and ASEAN. Comparative static results are derived to analyze the effect of tariff changes on exports, domestic sales, and welfare. Based on the theoretical model, we derived an econometric specification and used the new empirical industrial organization literature to estimate the market power of U.S. and Chinese apple producers. The econometric model is simulated to quantify the effect of tariff removal on exports and domestic sales.

As pediatric cardiac critical care becomes more sub-specialized it is reasonable to assume that dedicated units may provide a better infrastructure for improved multidisciplinary care, cardiac-specific patient safety initiatives, and dedicated training of fellows and residents. The knowledge base required to optimally manage pediatric patients with critical cardiac disease has evolved sufficiently to consider a standardized training curriculum and board certification for pediatric cardiac critical care. This strategy would potentially provide consistency of training and healthcare and improve quality of care and patient safety.
