We present a clinical case of a teenager in whom a Brugada syndrome electrical pattern was found which was finally diagnosed as a Brugada phenocopy due to a wrong setup of the high-pass filter on the electrocardiogram

This essay discusses issues of time and temporality in relation to performance art from the Dominican Republic. It contends that Dominican performance artists are advancing critical understandings of what is to be contemporary. The essay considers the work of David Pérez “Karmadavis,” Sayuri Guzmán, and José Ramia as expressing the role of artists in defining and delving into what it means to make art in and of the present, while simultaneously challenging the presentist understanding of time linked to neoliberalism. From this perspective, the article examines the potential of performance art for criticizing and expanding our understanding of time and temporality.

The new mineral paradimorphite corresponds to the high temperature polymorph of As4S3, whose existence was supposed by Arcangelo Scacchi in 1850 in the fumaroles at the Solfatara di Pozzuoli, Campi Flegrei, near Napoli, Italy.

Crystals of paradimorphite are orange yellow, transparent or semitransparent, with adamantine lustre. Habit is prismatic and observed forms are {110}, {101}, {111}, {100}, {010} and {001}. Tenacity is brittle, no distinct cleavage is observed and fracture is conchoidal. The mineral does not fluoresce in long- or shortwave ultraviolet light. No twinning is apparent. The streak is saffron yellow. Hardness (Mohs) = 1–2. The observed density is 3.510(3) g/cm3, calculated density is 3.500 g/cm3. The mineral is orthorhombic, space group Pnma, with a = 9.1577(7), b = 8.0332(6), c = 10.2005(8) Å, V = 750.41(10) Å3 and Z = 4. The eight strongest powder X-ray diffraction lines are [dobs Å(I)(hkl)]: 6.299(48)(011), 5.186(100)(111), 4.174(31)(201), 3.133(34)(022), 3.116(58)(212), 2.980(41)(122), 1.846 (27)(413) and 1.808(23)(134). The structure was refined to R = 0.0229 for 979 reflections with I >2σ(I). Crystals of paradimorphite contain As4S3 molecules, of idealised C3v symmetry, with the four arsenic atoms in a triangular pyramidal arrangement, with sulfur atom bridges on the three adjacent apical edges. Molecular dimensions and conformation are identical within standard uncertainties with those of the low-temperature polymorph dimorphite. No substantial differences, neither in the molecular packing nor in the molecular orientation, could be observed; minor differences being related to intermolecular distances only.

We studied the sperm whale Physeter macrocephalus in the Colombian Caribbean by combining data from our offshore surveys of behaviour, encounter rate, group structure and density with data from the literature. We describe for the first time the potential distribution of sperm whales in the Colombian Caribbean, using sighting and acoustic data obtained during our surveys, published information, and opportunistic encounters during 1988–2020. We conducted surveys on seismic vessels over 703 days during 2011–2016, covering an area of 68,904 km2. We recorded 98 individuals in a total of 50 groups, a density of 1.42 individuals per 1,000 km2. To determine the potential distribution of the species, we built Maxent models with uncorrelated environmental variables at five depths (from the surface to c. 2,000 m). The model for 1,000 m depth had the best performance, with areas of high probability of occurrence of sperm whales in the south and north-east Colombian Caribbean over the shelf break to waters up to c. 3,000 m deep, at a median distance of 107 km from the coast, and near the Archipelago of San Andrés, Old Providence and Saint Catherine in the north-west. This area may be an important tropical habitat for sperm whales, in which they socialize, rest, breed and feed. Our study underlines the importance of monitoring marine mammals offshore and describes the potential distribution of sperm whales in the Colombian Caribbean, supporting conservation actions for this Vulnerable species, which is currently facing several threats in this region.

The new mineral acmonidesite, (NH4,K,Pb2+,Na)9Fe42+(SO4)5Cl8, was found in an active fumarole (fumarole FA, temperature ~250°C) at La Fossa crater, Vulcano, Aeolian Islands, Sicily, Italy. It occurs on a pyroclastic breccia as brown prismatic crystals up to 0.10 mm long, in association with salammoniac, alunite and adranosite. The mineral is orthorhombic, space group C2221 (no. 20) with a = 9.841(1), b = 19.448(3) c = 17.847(3) Å, V = 3415.7(9) Å3 and Z = 4. The six strongest reflections in the powder X-ray diffraction pattern are: [dobs in Å(I)(hkl)] 8.766(100)(110), 1.805(88)(390), 5.178(45)(131), 4.250(42)(221), 2.926(42)(330) and 2.684(32)(261). The empirical formula (based on 28 anions per formula unit [pfu]) is (NH4)5.77K1.42Pb0.62Na1.24Fe3.96Mn0.08S5.04O20.16Cl7.97Br0.08. The idealised formula is (NH4,K,Pb2+,Na)9Fe42+(SO4)5Cl8. The calculated density is 2.551 g cm–3. Using single-crystal diffraction data, the structure was refined to a final R(F) = 0.0363 for 4614 independent observed reflections [I > 2σ(I)]. The structure contains two independent, distorted octahedral iron sites, Fe1 and Fe2, with the iron atoms in the 2+ oxidation state, as confirmed by the interatomic distances and bond-valence calculations (2.06 and 1.94 vu, respectively). Fe1 is surrounded by two chlorine atoms and four oxygens of the sulfate ions, with the following average distances (Å): Fe1–O 2.125 and Fe1–Cl 2.472; and Fe2 is surrounded by three chlorine atoms and three oxygens of the sulfate ions, with the following average distances (Å): Fe2–O 2.110 and Fe2–Cl 2.531. Three independent sulfate anions are also present and are connected with the iron polyhedra to form a three-dimensional structure containing voids occupied by four independent ammonium ions (two of them partially replaced by K+), one Na+/Pb2+ site and one Cl– ion.

The new mineral campostriniite, (Bi3+,Na)3(NH4,K)2Na2(SO4)6·H2O, was found in an active fumarole (fumarole FA, temperature ∼350°C) at La Fossa Crater, Vulcano, Aeolian Islands, Sicily, Italy. It occurs on a pyroclastic breccia as white prismatic crystals up to 0.2 mm long, in association with adranosite, demicheleite-(Br), demicheleite-(I), argesite and sassolite. The mineral is monoclinic, space group: C2/c (no. 15) with a = 17.748(3), b = 6.982(1) c = 18.221(3) Å, β = 113.97(1)°, V = 2063(1) Å3 and Z = 4. The six strongest reflections in the powder X-ray diffraction pattern are: [dobs in Å (I)(hkl)] 6.396(100)(110), 7.507(75)(202), 2.766(60)(316), 3.380(57)(312), 5.677(55)(111), 3.166(50)(4 0 2). The empirical formula (based on 25 anions p.f.u.) is Bi2.41N1.52Na2.41K0.48 S6.07H8.08O25. The calculated density is 3.87 g cm–3. Using single-crystal diffraction data, the structure was refined to a final R(F) = 0.051 for 3025 independent observed reflections [I > 2σ(I)]. Campostriniite is isostructural with görgeyite and belongs to the 7.CD group of the Strunz classification system. The structure contains two independent nine-fold coordinated sites, one of them located on a two-fold axis (M1) and the other one in general position (M2) essentially occupied by Bi3+ atoms and minor amounts of Na+ ions, an eight-fold coordinated site fully occupied by Na +ions and another eight-fold coordinated site occupied by NH+4 and K+ ions; three independent sulfate anions in a general position and a water molecule coordinated to M1 and located on a two-fold axis are also present.

The degree of development and operability of the indicators for the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) using Descriptor 1 (D1) Biological Diversity was assessed. To this end, an overview of the relevance and degree of operability of the underlying parameters across 20 European countries was compiled by analysing national directives, legislation, regulations, and publicly available reports. Marked differences were found between countries in the degree of ecological relevance as well as in the degree of implementation and operability of the parameters chosen to indicate biological diversity. The best scoring EU countries were France, Germany, Greece and Spain, while the worst scoring countries were Italy and Slovenia. No country achieved maximum scores for the implementation of MSFD D1. The non-EU countries Norway and Turkey score as highly as the top-scoring EU countries. On the positive side, the chosen parameters for D1 indicators were generally identified as being an ecologically relevant reflection of Biological Diversity. On the negative side however, less than half of the chosen parameters are currently operational. It appears that at a pan-European level, no consistent and harmonized approach currently exists for the description and assessment of marine biological diversity. The implementation of the MSFD Descriptor 1 for Europe as a whole can therefore at best be marked as moderately successful.

We use a piezoelectric quartz tuning fork to calibrate the displacement of ceramic piezoelectric scanners that are widely employed in scanning probe microscopy. We measure the static piezoelectric response of a quartz tuning fork and find it to be highly linear, nonhysteretic and with negligible creep. These performance characteristics, close to those of an ideal transducer, make quartz transducers superior to ceramic piezoelectric actuators. Furthermore, quartz actuators in the form of a tuning fork have the advantage of yielding static displacements comparable to those of local probe microscope scanners. We use the static displacement of a quartz tuning fork as a reference to calibrate the three axis displacement of a ceramic piezoelectric scanner. Although this calibration technique is a nontraceable method, it can be more versatile than using calibration grids because it enables characterization of the linear and nonlinear response of a piezoelectric scanner in a broad range of displacements, spanning from a fraction of a nanometer to hundreds of nanometers. In addition, the creep and the speed dependent piezoelectric response of ceramic scanners can be studied in detail.

Introduction. Tejocote (Crataegus spp.) is an edible fruit species that some Mesoamerican cultures have cultivated since pre-Hispanic times in Mexico; however, this fruit crop has not undergone formal breeding. It is unknown whether morphological markers associated with fruit size exist to be used for indirect selection; this could be important, because this species has a large cycle. Our research aimed at studying phenotypic correlations between leaf and stomata characters with fruit weight; such correlations might be used as morphological markers for selection of superior germplasm for fruit weight. Materials and methods. Pearson’s correlation coefficients of 36 leaf variables and three leaf stomata variables with fruit weight were calculated in 94 genotypes of four different species. Results. As expected, the correlations calculated for each species and for the species pool differed. However, the number of veins in leaves of reproductive shoots was positively correlated with fruit weight (P ≤ 0.05) in the two most important horticultural species. On the other hand, C. mexicana was the best option for selecting superior germplasm, and the most significant variables correlated with fruit weight in this species were leaf major axis length of large vegetative shoots, leaf elongation ratio and number of veins of reproductive shoot leaves. Discussion. These variables could be good selection indices or morphological markers that can be used for early screening of germplasm for yield potential.

We describe 4 cases of congenitally corrected transposition associated with atrioventricular septal defect, diagnosed by echocardiography and angiocardiography. Two had usual atrial arrangement and two had mirror imaged atrial arrangement. All cases were associated with subpulmonary valvar stenosis. All patients presented with cyanosis and were in sinus rhythm. Atrioventricular septal defect with common atrioventricular junction was easily diagnosed on the basis of a common atrioventricular valve permitting interatrial and interventricular communications. All patients had balanced right and left ventricles. The echocardiographic recognition of the ventricles was based on the presence of the moderator band within the morphologically right ventricle, the characteristics of the apical septal trabeculations, and the shape of the ventricles. Angiocardiographic recognition of the ventricles was achieved on the basis of right and left ven-triculography.

In one case with usual atrial arrangement, we recorded two His bundle potentials, one anteriorly and another posteriorly. Atrial stimulation revealed blocked atrioventricular conduction at the level of the pos terior bundle, and normal atrioventricular conduction through the anterior bundle. In both cases with atrial mirror-imagery, only a posterior His bundle potential was found, with normal atrioventricular conduction revealed by atrial stimulation

The clinical course with this combination depends on the other lesions present in addition to the common atrioventricular valve. Our electrophysiological studies show that the conduction system in presence of a common atrioventricular valve is as expected for congenitally corrected transposition with two atrioventric ular valves.
