The Central Asian Orogenic Belt is the world’s largest accretionary orogenic belt, associated with the closure of the Paleo-Asian Ocean (PAO). However, the final closure timing of the eastern PAO remains contentious. The Permian-Triassic sedimentary sequences in the Wangqing area along the Changchun-Yanji suture zone offer important clues into this final closure. New data on petrology, whole-rock geochemistry, zircon U-Pb geochronology and zircon Hf isotopes of sedimentary rocks from the Miaoling Formation and Kedao Group in Wangqing area provide new insights into the final closure of the eastern end of the PAO. The maximum deposition ages of the Miaoling Formation and Kedao Group have been constrained to the Late Permian (ca. 253 Ma) and early Middle Triassic (ca. 243 Ma), respectively. These sedimentary rocks exhibit similar geochemical characteristics, showing low textural and compositional maturities, implying short sediment transport, with all detrital zircons suggesting their origins from felsic igneous rocks. The εHf(t) values of the Miaoling Formation range from −6.09 to 12.43 and from −2.20 to 7.59 for the Kedao Group, implying these rocks originated from NE China. Considering our new data along with previously published data, we propose that a reduced remnant ocean remained along the Changchun-Yanji suture zone in the early Middle Triassic (ca. 243 Ma), suggesting the final closure of the eastern PAO likely occurred between the latest Middle Triassic and early Late Triassic.

We demonstrate an all-optical method for controlling the transverse motion of an ionization injected electron beam in a laser plasma accelerator by using the transversely asymmetrical plasma wakefield. The laser focus shape can control the distribution of a transversal wakefield. When the laser focus shape is changed from circular to slanted elliptical in the experiment, the electron beam profiles change from an ellipse to three typical shapes. The three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation result agrees well with the experiment, and it shows that the trajectories of these accelerated electrons change from undulating to helical. Such an all-optical method could be useful for convenient control of the transverse motion of an electron beam, which results in synchrotron radiation from orbit angular momentum.

Familial monozygotic (MZ) twinning reports are rare around the world, and we report a four-generation pedigree with seven recorded pairs of female MZ twins. Whole-genome sequencing of seven family members was performed to explore the featured genetic factors in MZ twins. For variations specific to MZ twins, five novel variants were observed in the X chromosome. These candidates were used to explain the seemingly X-linked dominant inheritance pattern, and only one variant was exonic, located at the 5′UTR region of ZCCHC12 (chrX: 117958597, G > A). Besides, consistent mitochondrial DNA composition in the maternal linage precluded roles of mitochondria for this trait. In this pedigree, autosomes also contain diverse variations specific to MZ twins. Pathway analysis revealed a significant enrichment of genes carrying novel SNVs in the epithelial adherens junction-signaling pathway (p = .011), contributed by FGFR1, TUBB6, and MYH7B. Meanwhile, TBC1D22A, TRIOBP, and TUBB6, also carrying similar SNVs, were involved in the GTPase family-mediated signal pathway. Furthermore, gene-set enrichment analysis for 533 genes covered by copy number variations specific to MZ twins illustrated that the tight junction-signaling pathway was significantly enriched (p < .001). Therefore, the novel changes in the X chromosome and the provided candidate variants across autosomes may be responsible for MZ twinning, giving clues to increase our understanding about the underlying mechanism.

Leucine plays an important role in promoting muscle protein synthesis and muscle remodelling. However, what percentage of leucine is appropriate in creep feed and what proteome profile alterations are caused by dietary leucine in the skeletal muscle of piglets remain elusive. In this case, we applied isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantitation to analyse the proteome profile of the longissimus dorsi muscles of weanling piglets fed a normal leucine diet (NL; 1·66 % leucine) and a high-leucine diet (HL; 2·1 % leucine). We identified 157 differentially expressed proteins between these two groups. Bioinformatics analysis of these proteins exhibited the suppression of oxidative phosphorylation and fatty acid β-oxidation, as well as the activation of glycolysis, in the HL group. For further confirmation, we identified that SDHB, ATP5F1, ACADM and HADHB were significantly down-regulated (P<0·01, except ATP5F1, P<0·05), whereas the glycolytic enzyme pyruvate kinase was significantly up-regulated (P<0·05) in the HL group. We also show that enhanced muscle protein synthesis and the transition from slow-to-fast fibres are altered by leucine. Together, these results indicate that leucine may alter energy metabolism and promote slow-to-fast transitions in the skeletal muscle of weanling piglets.

The small-scale linear microphone arrays that are widely found in smartphones could be used to locate a sound source for indoor environments. After the Time Differences Of Arrival (TDOAs) in microphone pairs are estimated, a TDOA-based hybrid localisation scheme is proposed for a small-scale linear microphone array. The scheme contains two stages: the initialisation stage using the Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) algorithm, and the refining solution stage using the Weighted Least-Square (WLS) algorithm or the Multi-Dimensional Scaling-based (MDS) algorithm. Simulations and field tests show that the proposed indoor localisation scheme outperforms the existing schemes, and it can achieve an average error of 0·32 metres in an 8 m by 5 m area.

Global analysis of vessel motion patterns has become possible using satellite-based Automatic Identification System (AIS). The concept of space-based AIS needs several satellites to provide complete coverage and high detection probability. However, in early development stages, often only one satellite is launched and due to its limitation of orbit and footprint, received AIS messages are discontinuous. In this paper, we have analysed real AIS data obtained by satellite to form a global maritime surveillance picture. Furthermore, we propose to take advantage of the tensor CANDECOMP/PARAFAC (CP) decomposition to analyse three mode characteristics of the data, which are location, vessel and time. For incomplete data, we exploit the link prediction technique based on tensor factorisation to recover vessel tracks in a specified area. A variant of temporal link prediction based on CP is presented. We illustrate the usefulness of exploiting the three-mode structure of AIS data by simulation, and demonstrate that the track recovery result has acceptable precision.

The problem of analysing a single vessel's behaviour from real but incomplete Automatic Identification System (AIS) data received by satellite has been investigated. The main objective was to infer the route of any single vessel of interest, utilising the dynamic information decoded from AIS messages. A complete process of route inference using position, speed, course over ground and time stamp information is proposed in this paper. Due to the incompleteness of satellite AIS messages, an algorithm incorporating random deviations is also presented to account for the missing sections of obtained vessel routes. Analysis results from a set of real AIS data have demonstrated the applicability of the proposed algorithms in various scenarios.

We report progress in growing non-polar a-plane III-nitride films and heterostructures over a-plane 4H-SiC. a-plane SiC is more closely lattice-matched to a-plane GaN than is r-plane sapphire. Consequently, better structural quality a-plane nitride films may result over a-plane SiC substrates. By migration enhanced metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MEMOCVD), an atomically smooth (1120)AlN layer with RMS roughness of 0.3nm was obtained. From the results of XRD, the structural defects in the AlN layer on SiC substrates were strongly reduced compared to those grown on r-plane sapphire. Also by applying our selective area lateral epitaxy (SALE) growth procedure, we achieved high structural and optical quality a-plane GaN films on 4H-SiC with RMS roughness only 0.4nm. Therefore, non-polar III-nitride films and heterostructures on SiC substrates are promising building blocks for realizing high performance polarization-free devices.
