Ever since Shor's quantum algorithm for factoring integers was discovered three decades ago, showing that quantum algorithms could solve a problem relevant to everyday cryptography, researchers have been working to expand the list of real-world problems to which quantum computing can be applied. This book surveys the fruits of this effort, covering proposed quantum algorithms for concrete problems in many application areas, including quantum chemistry, optimization, finance, and machine learning. The book clearly states the problem being solved and the full computational complexity of the quantum algorithm, making sure to account for the contribution from all the underlying primitive ingredients. Separately, the book also provides a detailed, independent summary of the most common algorithmic primitives. The book has a modular, encyclopedic format to facilitate navigation of the material, and to provide a quick reference for designers of quantum algorithms and quantum computing researchers. The Hele-Shaw–Cahn–Hilliard model, coupled with phase separation, is numerically simulated to demonstrate the formation of anomalous fingering patterns in a radial displacement of a partially miscible binary-fluid system. The composition of injected fluid is set to be less viscous than the displaced fluid and within the spinodal or metastable phase-separated region, in which the second derivative of the free energy is negative or positive, respectively. Because of phase separation, concentration evolves non-monotonically between the injected and displaced fluids. The simulations reveal four areas of the concentration distribution between the fluids: the inner core; the low-concentration grooves/high-concentration ridges; the isolated fluid fragments or droplets; the mixing zone. The grooves/ridges and the fragments/droplets, which are the unique features of phase separation, form in the spinodal and metastable regions. Four typical types of patterns are categorized: core separation (CS); fingering separation (FS); separation fingering (SF); lollipop fingering, in the order of the dominance of phase separation, respectively. For the patterns of CS and FS, isolated fluid fragments or droplets around the inner core are the main features. Fingering formation is better maintained with droplets in the SF pattern if the phase separation is relatively weaker than viscous fingering (VF). Even continuous fingers are well preserved in the case of dominant VF; phase separation results in lollipop-shaped fingers. The evolving trend of the patterns is in line with the experiments. These patterns are summarized in a pattern diagram, mainly by the magnitude of the second derivative of the free energy profile.
This Element provides a transregional overview of Pride in Asia, exploring the multifaceted nature of Pride in contemporary LGBTQIA+ events in Thailand, the Philippines, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. This collaborative research that combines individual studies draws on linguistic landscapes as an analytical and methodological approach. Each section examines the different manifestations of Pride as a discourse and the affordances and limitations of this discourse in facilitating the social, political, and cultural projects of LGBTQIA+ people in Asia, illustrating both commonalities and specificities in Asian Pride movements. Analyzing a variety of materials such as protest signs, t-shirts, and media reports, each section illustrates how modes of semiosis, through practice, intersect notions of gender and sexuality with broader social and political formations. The authors thus emphasize the need to view Pride not as a uniform global phenomenon but as a dynamic, locally shaped expression of LGBTQIA+ solidarity.
We developed a real-world evidence (RWE) based Markov model to project the 10-year cost of care for patients with depression from the public payer’s perspective to inform early policy and resource planning in Hong Kong.
Methods
The model considered treatment-resistant depression (TRD) and development of comorbidities along the disease course. The outcomes included costs for all-cause and psychiatric care. From our territory-wide electronic medical records, we identified 25,190 patients with newly diagnosed depression during the period from 2014 to 2016, with follow-up until December 2020 for real-world time-to-event patterns. Costs and time varying transition inputs were derived using negative binomial and parametric survival modeling. The model is available as a closed cohort, which studies a fixed cohort of incident patients, or an open cohort that introduces new patients every year. Utilities values and the number of incident cases per year were derived from published sources.
Results
There were 9,217 new patients with depression in 2023. Our closed cohort model projected that the cumulative cost of all-cause and psychiatric care for these patients would reach USD309 million and USD58 million by 2032, respectively. In our open cohort model, 55,849 to 57,896 active prevalent cases would cost more than USD322 million and USD61 million annually in all-cause and psychiatric care, respectively. Although less than 20 percent of patients would develop TRD or its associated comorbidities, they contribute 31 to 54 percent of the costs. The key cost drivers were the number of annual incident cases and the probability of developing TRD and associated comorbidities and of becoming a low-intensity service user. These factors are relevant to early disease stages.
Conclusions
A small proportion of patients with depression develop TRD, but they contribute to a high proportion of the care costs. Our projection also demonstrates the application of RWE to model the long-term costs of care, which can aid policymakers in anticipating foreseeable burden and undertaking budget planning to prepare for future care needs.
Bacterial infection risk in work environments has been extensively reported for healthcare workers, while this risk is rarely researched in other occupations. This study aimed to identify occupational environments in Taiwan’s agricultural and healthcare industries with elevated bacterial infection risks by comparing risks for general bacterial infections and pneumonia. Using labour and health insurance claim data from 3.3 million workers (January 2004–December 2020), a retrospective cohort was constructed to estimate occupational infection risks with Cox regression and the Anderson-Gill extension. Significantly elevated hazard ratios were found for workers in vegetable growing, crop cultivation service, mushroom growing, flower growing, and fruit growing, ranging from 1.13 to 1.39 for general bacterial infections and 1.68 to 3.06 for pneumonia infections. In afforestation and the inland fishing industry, pneumonia risk was significantly elevated with, respectively, 1.87 and 1.21. In the healthcare section, especially workers in residential care services and residential care services for elderly stand out regarding their pneumonia risk, with significant hazard ratios of 3.49 and 1.75. The methods used in this study were proven to be effective in identification of occupation environments at risk and can be used in other settings. These findings call for prioritization of bacterial infection prevention by occupation.
Introduction: Late-life depression (LLD) is associated with cognitive deficit with risk of future dementia. By examining the entropy of the spontaneous brain activity, we aimed to understand the neural mechanism pertaining to cognitive decline in LLD.
Methods: We collected MRI scans in older adults with LLD (n = 32), mild cognitive impairment [MCI (n = 25)] and normal cognitive function [NC, (n = 47)]. Multiscale entropy analysis (MSE) was applied to resting-state fMRI data. Under the scale factor (tau) 1 and 2, reliable separation of fMRI data and noise was achieved. We calculated the brain entropy in 90 brain regions based on automated anatomical atlas (AAL). Due to exploratory nature of this study, we presented data of group-wise comparison in brain entropy between LLD vs. NC, MCI vs. NC, and LLD and MCD with a p-value below 0.001.
Results: The mean Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score of LLD and MCI was 27.9 and 25.6. Under tau 2, we found higher brain entropy of LLD in left globus pallidus than MCI (p = 0.002) and NC (p = 0,009). Higher brain entropy of LLD than NC was also found in left frontal superior gyrus, left middle superior gyrus, left amygdala and left inferior parietal gyrus. The only brain region with higher brain entropy in MCI than control was left posterior cingulum (p-value = 0.015). Under tau 1, higher brain entropy was also found in LLD than in MCI in right orbital part of medial frontal gyrus and left globus pallidus (p-value = 0.007 and 0.005).
Conclusions: Our result is consistent with prior hypothesis where higher brain entropy was found during early aging process as compensation. We found such phenomenon particular in left globus pallidus in LLD, which could be served as a discriminative brain region. Being a key region in reward system, we hypothesis such region may be associated with apathy and with unique pathway of cognitive decline in LLD. We will undertake subsequent analysis longitudinally in this cohort
Purple nutsedge (Cyperus rotundus L.) is one of the world’s resilient upland weeds, primarily spreading through its tubers. Its emergence in rice (Oryza sativa L.) fields has been increasing, likely due to changing paddy-farming practices. This study aimed to investigate how C. rotundus, an upland weed, can withstand soil flooding and become a problematic weed in rice fields. The first comparative analysis focused on the survival and recovery characteristics of growing and mature tubers of C. rotundus exposed to soil-flooding conditions. Notably, mature tubers exhibited significant survival and recovery abilities in these environments. Based on this observation, further investigation was carried out to explore the morphological structure, nonstructural carbohydrates, and respiratory mechanisms of mature tubers in response to prolonged soil flooding. Over time, the mature tubers did not form aerenchyma but instead gradually accumulated lignified sclerenchymal fibers, with lignin content also increasing. After 90 d, the lignified sclerenchymal fibers and lignin contents were 4.0 and 1.1 times higher than those in the no soil-flooding treatment. Concurrently, soluble sugar content decreased while starch content increased, providing energy storage, and alcohol dehydrogenase activity rose to support anaerobic respiration via alcohol fermentation. These results indicated that mature tubers survived in soil-flooding conditions by adopting a low-oxygen quiescence strategy, which involves morphological adaptations through the development of lignified sclerenchymal fibers, increased starch reserves for energy storage, and enhanced anaerobic respiration. This mechanism likely underpins the flooding tolerance of mature C. rotundus tubers, allowing them to endure unfavorable conditions and subsequently germinate and grow once flooding subsides. This study provides a preliminary explanation of the mechanism by which mature tubers of C. rotundus from the upland areas confer flooding tolerance, shedding light on the reasons behind this weed’s increasing presence in rice fields.
Inconsistent results regarding the risk of relapse and better subjective outcomes of previous antipsychotic dose reduction trials in patients with remitted psychosis have not been verified using therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM). This study examined plasma drug concentrations of a dose-tapering trial which exhibited the potential of successful maintenance under lower antipsychotic dosages.
Methods
A 2-year open-label randomized prospective trial recruited remitted patients to undergo guided antipsychotic tapering. Blood samples were collected at baseline, annually, and after each dose reduction. Plasma aripiprazole/dehydroaripiprazole concentrations were determined using LC–MS/MS. The relationship between the dose and serum drug levels was examined using Spearman's correlation. Divided at 120 ng/mL, relapse rate, global function, quality of life, and psychopathology were compared between high- and low- drug level groups.
Results
A total of 126 blood samples were collected, after excluding13 samples due of non-adherence. The correlation coefficients between dosage and drug level were 0.853 (aripiprazole) and 0.864 (dehydroaripiprazole), and the dose and concentration plots were parallel along the tapering trajectories, except patients with non-adherence. The concentration-to-dose ratio of aripiprazole in this cohort, 17.79 ± 7.23 ng/mL/mg, was higher than that in Caucasian populations. No significant differences were observed in the clinical outcomes between the high- and low-level groups. Remarkably, 12 of 15 patients maintained remission at plasma aripiprazole concentrations of <120 ng/mL.
Conclusions
The lower-than-expected doses reached in our antipsychotic tapering trial were substantiated to provide adequate prophylactic effects by TDM results in a subset of patients treated with aripiprazole, even considering the differences in pharmacogenomics between ethnicities.
The right inferior frontal gyrus (RIFG) is a potential beneficial brain stimulation target for autism. This randomized, double-blind, two-arm, parallel-group, sham-controlled clinical trial assessed the efficacy of intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS) over the RIFG in reducing autistic symptoms (NCT04987749).
Methods
Conducted at a single medical center, the trial enrolled 60 intellectually able autistic individuals (aged 8–30 years; 30 active iTBS). The intervention comprised 16 sessions (two stimulations per week for eight weeks) of neuro-navigated iTBS or sham over the RIFG. Fifty-seven participants (28 active) completed the intervention and assessments at Week 8 (the primary endpoint) and follow-up at Week 12.
Results
Autistic symptoms (primary outcome) based on the Social Responsiveness Scale decreased in both groups (significant time effect), but there was no significant difference between groups (null time-by-treatment interaction). Likewise, there was no significant between-group difference in changes in repetitive behaviors and exploratory outcomes of adaptive function and emotion dysregulation. Changes in social cognition (secondary outcome) differed between groups in feeling scores on the Frith-Happe Animations (Week 8, p = 0.026; Week 12, p = 0.025). Post-hoc analysis showed that the active group improved better on this social cognition than the sham group. Dropout rates did not vary between groups; the most common adverse event in both groups was local pain. Notably, our findings would not survive stringent multiple comparison corrections.
Conclusions
Our findings suggest that iTBS over the RIFG is not different from sham in reducing autistic symptoms and emotion dysregulation. Nonetheless, RIFG iTBS may improve social cognition of mentalizing others' feelings in autistic individuals.
Divergent thinking is a critical creative cognitive process. Its neural mechanisms have been well-studied through structural and functional imaging in healthy individuals but are less explored in patients with bipolar disorder (BD). Because of the traditional link between creativity and BD, this study investigated the structural correlates of divergent thinking in patients with BD through surface-based morphometry.
Methods:
Fifty-nine patients diagnosed with BD I or BD II (35.3 ± 8.5 years) and 56 age- and sex-matched controls (33.9 ± 7.4 years) were recruited. The participants underwent structural magnetic resonance imaging and an evaluation of divergent thinking by using the Chinese version of the Abbreviated Torrance Test for Adults (ATTA). FreeSurfer 7.0 was used to generate thickness and surface area maps for each participant. Brainwise regression of the association between cortical thickness or surface area and ATTA performance was conducted using general linear models.
Results:
Divergent thinking performance did not differ significantly between the patients with BD and the healthy controls. In these patients, total ATTA score was negatively correlated with cortical thickness in the right middle frontal gyrus, right occipital, and left precuneus but positively correlated with the surface area of the right superior frontal gyrus. By contrast, total ATTA scores and cortical thickness or surface area were not significantly correlated among the controls.
Conclusion:
The findings indicate that divergent thinking involves cerebral structures for executive control, mental imagery, and visual processing in patients with BD, and the right prefrontal cortex might be the most crucial of these structures.
As an important component of prehistoric subsistence, an understanding of bone-working is essential for interpreting the evolution of early complex societies, yet worked bones are rarely systematically collected in China. Here, the authors apply multiple analytical methods to worked bones from the Longshan site of Pingliangtai, in central China, showing that Neolithic bone-working in this area, with cervid as the main raw material, was mature but localised, household-based and self-sufficient. The introduction of cattle in the Late Neolithic precipitated a shift in bone-working traditions but it was only later, in the Bronze Age, that cattle bones were utilised in a specialised fashion and dedicated bone-working industries emerged in urban centres.
We construct an autoregressive moving average (ARMA) model consisting of the history and random effects for the streamwise velocity fluctuation in boundary-layer turbulence. The distance to the wall and the boundary-layer thickness determine the time step and the order of the ARMA model, respectively. Based on the autocorrelation's analytical expression of the ARMA model, we obtain a global analytical expression for the second-order structure function, which asymptotically captures the inertial, dynamic and large-scale ranges. Specifically, the exponential autocorrelation of the ARMA model arises from the autoregressive coefficients and is modified to logarithmic behaviour by the moving-average coefficients. The asymptotic expressions enable us to determine model coefficients by existing parameters, such as the Kolmogorov and the Townsend–Perry constants. A consequent double-log expression for the characteristic length scale is derived and is justified by direct numerical simulation data with $Re_\tau \approx 5200$ and field-measured neutral atmospheric surface layer data with $Re_\tau \sim O(10^6)$ from the Qingtu Lake Observation Array site. This relation is robust because it applies to $Re_\tau$ from $O(10^4)$ to $O(10^6)$, and even when the statistics of natural ASL deviate from those of canonical boundary-layer turbulence, e.g. in the case of imbalance in energy production and dissipation, and when the Townsend–Perry constant deviates from traditional values.
This study explored the barriers and facilitators of mask-wearing behaviors during the pandemic in Taiwan, the United States, the Netherlands, and Haiti.
Methods:
Face-to-face interviews were conducted in Taiwan and online interviews were conducted with participants in the United States, the Netherlands, and Haiti.
Results:
In general, the habit of wearing a mask before coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was reported by Taiwanese participants. Additionally, Taiwanese participants perceived that wearing a mask was a social responsibility during the pandemic, suggesting that the collectivistic context might influence mask-wearing behavior. Unlike the Taiwanese population, some people in the United States and the Netherlands were reluctant to wear masks due to perceived restrictions on their freedom. Participants from Haiti mentioned that people who wore masks encountered violence, bullying, and discrimination. The results of this study suggest that political leadership and mask mandates have a strong impact on people’s mask-wearing behavior.
Conclusions:
These findings have valuable implications for the design of diverse behavioral interventions to enhance mask-wearing as part of infectious disease preparedness. Additionally, the findings from these countries offer valuable insights for the development of effective public health interventions to enhance society’s resilience during the current pandemic and future infectious disease outbreaks.
In order to understand the microscopic properties of alkylammonium-intercalated vermiculites, molecular dynamics simulations employing the clayff-CVFF force field were performed to obtain the interlayer structures and dynamics. The layering behavior of alkyl chains was uncovered. With the model used in the present study (1.2 e per unit cell), the alkyl chains formed monolayers with carbon-chain lengths of C6, bilayers from C7 to C10, and pseudo-trimolecular layers from C15 to C18. Intermediate states also existed between bilayer and pseudo-trimolecular layer states from C11 to C14. The ammonium groups had two locations: most ammonium groups were located over the six-member rings (~90%), and the rest above the substitution sites (~10%). The ammonium groups interacted with the vermiculite surface through H bonds between ammonium H atoms and surface O atoms. The ammonium groups were fixed firmly on surfaces and, therefore, had very low mobility. The alkyl chains were slightly more mobile. The similarities and differences between alkylammonium-intercalated vermiculites and smectites were revealed. The layering behaviors of alkyl chains were similar in alkylammonium-intercalated vermiculites and smectites: the alkyl chain behavior was controlled by both the amount of layer charge and the carbon chain length. The distributions of ammonium groups, however, were different, caused by the layer-charge distribution in vermiculites being different from that in smectites. The atomic-level results derived in the present study will be useful for future research into and the applications of organo-vermiculites.
Heart rate variability (HRV) can be an indicator of the flexibility of the central and autonomic nervous systems. Heart rate variability biofeedback (HRV-BF) has been shown to validate the neuro-peripheral relationship and enhance the interaction between top-down and bottom-up processes. Few previous studies have focused on the treatment outcomes of HRV-BF in traumatic brain injury, and such studies have been mostly limited to pilot studies or case reports. The purpose of this study is to investigate the efficacy of HRV-BF for neuropsychological functioning in patients with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI).
Participants and Methods:
Forty-one patients with mTBI were referred from the neurosurgery outpatient program and randomly assigned to a psychoeducation group or a HRV-BF intervention group. The psychoeducation group received standard medical care and one 60-minute psychoeducation session after brain injury. The HRV-BF group received standard medical care and one 60-minute session of the HRV-BF intervention weekly for 10 weeks. All participants received performance-based and self-reported neuropsychological measures of memory, executive function, mood, and information processing at week 1 of injury (pretest) and week 12 (posttest).
Results:
Participants in HRV-BF improved significantly after the intervention compared with the psychoeducation group on the Verbal Learning Test, Frontal Assessment Battery, Verbal Fluency Test, Paced Auditory Serial Addition Test, Trail Making Test, Dysexecutive Questionnaire, Depression Inventory, and Checklist of Post-concussion Symptoms.
Conclusions:
HRV-BF was found to be an efficacious and efficient intervention for improving neuropsychological functioning in patients with mTBI and a potential candidate for mTBI rehabilitation.
National health insurance (NHI) Taiwan has provided additional markups on dental service fees for people with specific disabilities, and the expenditure has increased significantly from TWD473 million (USD15 million) in 2016 to TWD722 million (USD24 million) in 2022. The purpose of this study was to determine oral health risk and to develop a risk assessment model for capitation outpatient dental payments in children with Autism.
Methods
Based on the literature and expert opinion, we developed a level of oral health risk model from the claim records of 2019. The model uses oral outpatient claim data to analyze: (i) the degree of caries disease; (ii) the level of dental fear or cooperation; and (iii) the level of tooth structure. Each factor was given a score from zero to four and a total score was calculated. Low-, medium-, and high-risk groups were formed based on the total points. The oral health risk capitation models are estimated by ordinary least squares using an individual’s annual outpatient dental expenditure in 2019 as the dependent variable. For subgroups based on age group and level of disability, expenditures predicted by the models are compared with actual outpatient dental expenditures. Predictive R-squared and predictive ratios were used to evaluate the model’s predictability.
Results
The demographic variables, level of oral health risk, preventive dental care, and the type of dental health care predicted 30 percent of subsequent outpatient dental expenditure in children with autism. For subgroups (age group and disability level) of high-risk patients, the model substantially overpredicted the expenditure, whereas underprediction occurred in the low-risk group.
Conclusions
The risk-adjusted model based on principal oral health was more accurate in predicting an individual’s future expenditure than the relevant study in Taiwan. The finding provides insight into the important risk factor in the outpatient dental expenditure of children with autism and the fund planning of dental services for people with specific disabilities.
Somatic symptom disorders (SSD) and functional somatic syndromes (FSS) are often regarded as similar diagnostic constructs; however, whether they exhibit similar clinical outcomes, medical costs, and medication usage patterns has not been examined in nationwide data. Therefore, this study focused on analyzing SSD and four types of FSS (fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome, functional dyspepsia).
Methods
This population-based matched cohort study utilized Taiwan's National Health Insurance (NHI) claims database to investigate the impact of SSD/FSS. The study included 2 615 477 newly diagnosed patients with SSD/FSS and matched comparisons from the NHI beneficiary registry. Healthcare utilization, mortality, medical expenditure, and medication usage were assessed as outcome measures. Statistical analysis involved Cox regression models for hazard ratios, generalized linear models for comparing differences, and adjustment for covariates.
Results
All SSD/FSS showed significantly higher adjusted hazard ratios for psychiatric hospitalization and all-cause hospitalization compared to the control group. All SSD/FSS exhibited significantly higher adjusted hazard ratios for suicide, and SSD was particularly high. All-cause mortality was significantly higher in all SSD/FSS. Medical costs were significantly higher for all SSD/FSS compared to controls. The usage duration of all psychiatric medications and analgesics was significantly higher in SSD/FSS compared to the control group.
Conclusion
All SSD/FSS shared similar clinical outcomes and medical costs. The high hazard ratio for suicide in SSD deserves clinical attention.
To evaluate the mental health of paediatric cochlear implant users and analyse the relationship between six dimensions (movements, cognitive ability, emotion and will, sociality, living habits and language) and hearing and speech rehabilitation.
Methods
Eighty-two cochlear implant users were assessed using the Mental Health Survey Questionnaire. Age at implantation, time of implant use and listening modes were investigated. Categories of Auditory Performance and the Speech Intelligibility Rating Scale were used to score hearing and speech abilities.
Results
More recipients scored lower in cognitive ability and language. Age at implantation was statistically significant (p < 0.05) for movements, cognitive ability, emotion and will, and language. The time of implant usage and listening mode indicated statistical significance (p < 0.05) in cognitive ability, sociality and language.
Conclusion
Timely attention should be paid to the mental health of paediatric cochlear implant users, and corresponding psychological interventions should be implemented to make personalised rehabilitation plans.
Longitudinal studies on the variations of phenotypic and genotypic characteristics of K. pneumoniae across two decades are rare. We aimed to determine the antimicrobial susceptibility and virulence factors for K. pneumoniae isolated from patients with bacteraemia or urinary tract infection (UTI) from 1999 to 2022. A total of 699 and 1,267 K. pneumoniae isolates were isolated from bacteraemia and UTI patients, respectively, and their susceptibility to twenty antibiotics was determined; PCR was used to identify capsular serotypes and virulence-associated genes. K64 and K1 serotypes were most frequently observed in UTI and bacteraemia, respectively, with an increasing frequency of K20, K47, and K64 observed in recent years. entB and wabG predominated across all isolates and serotypes; the least frequent virulence gene was htrA. Most isolates were susceptible to carbapenems, amikacin, tigecycline, and colistin, with the exception of K20, K47, and K64 where resistance was widespread. The highest average number of virulence genes was observed in K1, followed by K2, K20, and K5 isolates, which suggest their contribution to the high virulence of K1.
