The Hele-Shaw–Cahn–Hilliard model, coupled with phase separation, is numerically simulated to demonstrate the formation of anomalous fingering patterns in a radial displacement of a partially miscible binary-fluid system. The composition of injected fluid is set to be less viscous than the displaced fluid and within the spinodal or metastable phase-separated region, in which the second derivative of the free energy is negative or positive, respectively. Because of phase separation, concentration evolves non-monotonically between the injected and displaced fluids. The simulations reveal four areas of the concentration distribution between the fluids: the inner core; the low-concentration grooves/high-concentration ridges; the isolated fluid fragments or droplets; the mixing zone. The grooves/ridges and the fragments/droplets, which are the unique features of phase separation, form in the spinodal and metastable regions. Four typical types of patterns are categorized: core separation (CS); fingering separation (FS); separation fingering (SF); lollipop fingering, in the order of the dominance of phase separation, respectively. For the patterns of CS and FS, isolated fluid fragments or droplets around the inner core are the main features. Fingering formation is better maintained with droplets in the SF pattern if the phase separation is relatively weaker than viscous fingering (VF). Even continuous fingers are well preserved in the case of dominant VF; phase separation results in lollipop-shaped fingers. The evolving trend of the patterns is in line with the experiments. These patterns are summarized in a pattern diagram, mainly by the magnitude of the second derivative of the free energy profile.

The impact of a chemical reaction, $A+B \rightarrow C$, on the stability of a miscible radial displacement in a porous medium is established. Our study involves a comprehensive analysis employing both linear stability analysis and nonlinear simulations. Through linear stability analysis, the onset of instability for monotonic as well as non-monotonic viscosity profiles corresponding to the same end-point viscosity are discussed and compared. We establish a $(R_b,R_c)$ phase plane for a wide range of Damköhler number ($Da$) and Péclet number ($Pe$) into stable and unstable regions. Here, $R_b=\ln (\mu _B/ \mu _A)$ and $R_c=\ln (\mu _C/ \mu _A)$ and $\mu _{i}$ is the viscosity of fluid $i$ $\in \{A$, $B$, $C$}. The stable zone in the $(R_b, R_c)$ phase plane contracts with increased $Da$ and $Pe$ but never vanishes. It exists even for $Da \rightarrow \infty$. Interestingly, we obtain a $Da$ independent stable region in the neighbourhood of $R_c=R_b$ where no transition occurs in stability despite changes in reaction rate. The study allows us to acquire knowledge about the transition of the stability for varying $Da, Pe$ and different reactions classified using $R_b, R_c$.

Neuro-therapeutic intervention joins play for older adults with and without cognitive decline in Asia. During the Covid-19 outbreak, older adults report an increased isolation and increased risk for cognitive decline and medical complications than younger populations. It is therefore reasonable to implement creative nonpharmacological interventions to satisfy older adults psycho-social needs while maintaining their cognitive functioning without being burdened with healthcare costs. In this interventional study, a group of 60 older adults aged 60 years old and older participated in sand tray activity for six weeks. Participants were interviewed for their experiences with six sand tray activities under social distance restrictions in Taiwan. Thematic analysis techniques are applied to examine the interviewing data to identify comment themes across participants. The qualitative results show that social connection is the need of older adults during the pandemic, that neuro-therapeutic play satisfies older adults’ emotional needs, and that sand tray activity offers an opportunity for older adults to exercise their brain. Implications are discussed.

Three Ultic Haplorthods with significant illuviation of clay and spodic materials in the subalpine forests located in the Alishan area of central Taiwan were selected to identify the clay mineral compositions by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and to explain the transformation of the clay minerals. The three pedons are dominated by vermiculite and vermiculite-illite interstratified minerals, and they have minor kaolinite, quartz and gibbsite. No hydroxy interlayered vermiculite (HIV) was found in the E horizon of the three pedons because the forest soils are very acidic and have very low Al contents. The presence of HIV in the spodic (Bhs) and argillic horizons (Bt) of the three pedons was associated with greater free Fe and Al contents (Fed and Ald), more favorable pH ranges, and coatings of organo-metallic complexes which prevented continuous weathering. The specific pedogenic process, clay illuviation and podzolization occurred sequentially in the Alishan area, and induced the unusual clay mineral distribution and transformation. The largest amounts of illite are in the C horizon and the amounts of vermiculite increased with decreasing soil depths. A reverse distribution between illite and vermiculite through the soil profile was observed. Illite was transformed to vermiculite due to the strong weathering environment associated with extremely low exchangeable K contents. The weathering sequence of clay minerals of Spodosols with fine textures in the study area is proposed as: illite → vermiculite (or interstratified vermiculite-illite minerals) → HIV and vermiculite.

Accumulating evidence shows associations between rapid eating and overweight. Modifying eating rate might be a potential weight management strategy without imposing additional dietary restrictions. A comprehensive understanding of factors associated with eating speed will help with designing effective interventions. The aim of this review was to synthesise the current state of knowledge on the factors associated with eating rate. The socio-ecological model (SEM) was utilised to scaffold the identified factors. A comprehensive literature search of eleven databases was conducted to identify factors associated with eating rate. The 104 studies that met the inclusion criteria were heterogeneous in design and methods of eating rate measurement. We identified thirty-nine factors that were independently linked to eating speed and mapped them onto the individual, social and environmental levels of the SEM. The majority of the reported factors pertained to the individual characteristics (n = 20) including demographics, cognitive/psychological factors and habitual food oral processing behaviours. Social factors (n = 11) included eating companions, social and cultural norms, and family structure. Environmental factors (n = 8) included food texture and presentation, methods of consumption or background sounds. Measures of body weight, food form and characteristics, food oral processing behaviours and gender, age and ethnicity were the most researched and consistent factors associated with eating rate. A number of other novel and underresearched factors emerged, but these require replication and further research. We highlight directions for further research in this space and potential evidence-based candidates for interventions targeting eating rate.

Examination of the material collected by Taiwan deep-sea cruises reveals the presence of five species of the deep-sea shrimp genus Glyphocrangon A. Milne-Edwards, 1881, representing new records for Taiwan and Dongsha (Pratas Island; under jurisdiction of Taiwan). These species are Glyphocrangon albatrossae, G. caecescens, G. indonesiensis, G. major and G. proxima, all of which belong to the informal Glyphocrangon spinicauda species group. These findings bring the total number of species in the G. spinicauda species group reported in the waters around Taiwan and Dongsha to 11. The complex ornamentation of the body surface of each species is shown using micro-computed tomography. Diagnosis and illustrations showing diagnostic characters and living colouration are provided for most, if not all, of these species. Glyphocrangon grandis is placed under the synonymy of G. major based on morphology, because it was found that diagnostic characters proposed to distinguish these two taxa are variable within the current series of specimens. The biogeographical distributions of these species are presented, and a key is provided to help identify the 11 known species in this region.

The benefits of branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) administration after hepatic intervention in patients with liver diseases remain unclear. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the effects of BCAA on patients undergoing hepatectomy, trans-arterial embolisation and radiofrequency ablation. Relevant randomised controlled trials (RCT) were obtained from PubMed, EMBASE and Cochrane Library databases. A meta-analysis was performed to calculate the pooled effect size by using random-effects models. The primary outcomes were survival and tumour recurrence. The secondary outcomes were hospital stay, nutrition status, biochemistry profile, complication rate of liver treatment and adverse effect of BCAA supplementation. In total, eleven RCT involving 750 patients were included. Our meta-analysis showed no significant difference in the rates of tumour recurrence and overall survival between the BCAA and control groups. However, the pooled estimate showed that BCAA supplementation in patients undergoing hepatic intervention significantly increased serum albumin (mean difference (MD): 0·11 g/dl, 95 % CI: 0·02, 0·20; 5 RCT) at 6 months and cholinesterase level (MD: 50·00 U/L, 95 % CI: 21·08, 78·92; 1 RCT) at 12 months and reduced ascites incidence (risk ratio: 0·39, 95 % CI: 0·21, 0·71; 4 RCT) at 12 months compared with the control group. Additionally, BCAA administration significantly increased body weight at 6 months and 12 months and increased arm circumference at 12 months. In conclusion, BCAA supplementation significantly improved the liver function, reduced the incidence of ascites and increased body weight and arm circumference. Thus, BCAA supplementation may beneficial for selected patients undergoing liver intervention.

COVID-19 has led to an increase in mental health problems for adolescents. In this study, we examined the factors related to the eHealth literacy of adolescents and how that impacted their pursuit of health information and mental health information online during the COVID-19 pandemic. We analyzed data from the 2020 Taiwan Communication Survey, which involved a total of 1,250 national representative adolescents who completed an online questionnaire. The results showed that two-thirds of adolescents reported searching for health information online, and about half of them reported searching for mental health information online during the COVID-19 pandemic. Multivariate analysis results indicated that adolescents who spent more time learning online, had higher levels of bonding social capital and self-determination, and had higher levels of parental active internet mediation were more likely to have higher levels of eHealth literacy. In addition, multivariate analysis results showed that adolescents who had higher levels of eHealth literacy and had higher depression and anxiety were more likely to seek health information and mental health information online. In conclusion, the levels of eHealth literacy and psychological distress of adolescents played a crucial role in their pursuit of health information and mental health information online during the COVID-19 pandemic.

We design an open-loop active flow control for separated flows around a plunging circular cylinder based on resolvent analysis. The cylinder is plunging at a Strouhal number of 0.36 and a Reynolds number of 500. A linear time-periodic system for control is obtained by linearizing the non-inertial incompressible vorticity equation in the cylinder-fixed frame about a time-averaged base flow. Using the Lyapunouv–Floquet transformation, the linear time-periodic system is transformed into a similar linear time-invariant system, whose resolvent is analysed to obtain an optimal actuating Strouhal number of 0.1464 for the transformed linear system. Simulations show that the active control with tangential actuations is capable of reducing the lift fluctuation by up to 25.7 % when the flow is actuated near the predicted harmonic and subharmonic frequencies.

Objectives: Central-line–associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) has been the leading cause of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) in the intensive care unit (ICU) setting. Previous studies have shown that a care bundle is effective in reducing CLABSI rates; however, the data on long-term sustainability and cost savings of bundled care are limited. Methods: From January 2011 to December 2020, a prospective surveillance was performed to monitor CLABSI at a university hospital in northern Taiwan. To reduce the CLABSI rate, a hospital-wide bundled care program for CLABSI prevention was implemented in 2013. We evaluated the long-term effect of the care bundle on CLABSI incidence and length of stay in the ICU. Results: During the study period, the overall CLABSI incidence decreased from 8.22 per 1,000 catheter days before the care bundle was implemented to 6.33 per 1,000 catheter days in 2020 (P for trend <.01). The most common pathogens causing CLABSI were gut organisms (1,420 of 2,363, 60.1%), followed by environmental organisms (734 of 2,363, 31.1%) and skin organisms (177 of 2,363, 7.5%). The decreasing trend was statistically significant in the incidence of CLABSI caused by skin organisms (P for trend < .01), but not in the incidence of CLABSI caused by environmental organisms (P for trend = .86) or gut organisms (P for trend = .06). In the multivariable analysis, implementation of this care bundle was independently associated with a decrease in the CLABSI rate (RR, 0.77; 95% CI, 0.66–0.88). Compared with patients without CLABSI, patients with CLABSI had a longer average ICU length of stay (27 vs 17 days). Conclusions: A sustainable reduction in the incidence of CLABSI caused by common commensals could be achieved through a cost-saving bundled care program.

Dormancy-breaking requirements and level of morphophysiological dormancy (MPD) were determined for seeds of Ilex formosana and I. uraiensis from the subtropical region, and seeds of I. rotunda from both the subtropical and tropical regions of Taiwan. We hypothesized that some Ilex species would have deep simple MPD broken by warm stratification. Germination of seeds and embryo growth was monitored at 30/20, 25/15, 20/10, 15/5°C and at 25°C. Seeds were cold-stratified and then incubated at 25/15°C, and seeds treated with GA3 and GA4 were incubated at 25/15°C. Fresh seeds reached 50% germination after 11–45 weeks of warm stratification. Pre-treatment with GA increased germination percentages of I. formosana and I. rotunda (tropical) but not I. uraiensis and I. rotunda (subtropical), while cold stratification did not promote germination of either species but increased the germination rate of I. rotunda (tropical). Embryo length in seeds of all species increased ≥710% prior to root emergence, and growth occurred during warm stratification. The positive response to GA and relatively short time for beginning of germination and to reach 50% germination indicate non-deep simple MPD in seeds of I. formosana and I. rotunda (tropical). The negative response to GA and long time for beginning of germination and to reach 50% germination indicate deep simple MPD in seeds of I. uraiensis and I. rotunda (subtropical). Thus, in both the subtropical and tropical regions of Taiwan, the seeds of Ilex species have non-deep simple and deep simple MPD that are broken by warm stratification. Furthermore, GA treatment increases the germination rate and percentage of Ilex seeds with non-deep simple MPD, and cold stratification promotes the seed germination rate of Ilex species with non-deep simple MPD in tropical region.

We obtained 24 air samples in 8 general wards temporarily converted into negative-pressure wards admitting coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) omicron variant BA.2.2 in Hong Kong. SARS-CoV-2 RNA was detected in 19 (79.2%) of 24 samples despite enhanced indoor air dilution. It is difficult to prevent airborne transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in hospitals.

During the first postnatal week in rodents, cholinergic retinal waves initiate in starburst amacrine cells (SACs), propagating to retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) and visual centers, essential for visual circuit refinement. By modulating exocytosis in SACs, dynamic changes in the protein kinase A (PKA) activity can regulate the spatiotemporal patterns of cholinergic waves. Previously, cysteine string protein-α (CSPα) is found to interact with the core exocytotic machinery by PKA-mediated phosphorylation at serine 10 (S10). However, whether PKA-mediated CSPα phosphorylation may regulate cholinergic waves via SACs remains unknown. Here, we examined how CSPα phosphorylation in SACs regulates cholinergic waves. First, we identified that CSPα1 is the major isoform in developing rat SACs and the inner plexiform layer during the first postnatal week. Using SAC-specific expression, we found that the CSPα1-PKA-phosphodeficient mutant (CSP-S10A) decreased wave frequency, but did not alter the wave spatial correlation compared to control, wild-type CSPα1 (CSP-WT), or two PKA-phosphomimetic mutants (CSP-S10D and CSP-S10E). These suggest that CSPα-S10 phosphodeficiency in SACs dampens the frequency of cholinergic waves. Moreover, the level of phospho-PKA substrates was significantly reduced in SACs overexpressing CSP-S10A compared to control or CSP-WT, suggesting that the dampened wave frequency is correlated with the decreased PKA activity. Further, compared to control or CSP-WT, CSP-S10A in SACs reduced the periodicity of wave-associated postsynaptic currents (PSCs) in neighboring RGCs, suggesting that these RGCs received the weakened synaptic inputs from SACs overexpressing CSP-S10A. Finally, CSP-S10A in SACs decreased the PSC amplitude and the slope to peak PSC compared to control or CSP-WT, suggesting that CSPα-S10 phosphodeficiency may dampen the speed of the SAC-RGC transmission. Thus, via PKA-mediated phosphorylation, CSPα in SACs may facilitate the SAC-RGC transmission, contributing to the robust frequency of cholinergic waves.
