Brown dwarfs are failed stars with very low mass (13 to 75 Jupiter mass), and an effective temperature lower than 2500 K. Their mass range is between Jupiter and red dwarfs. Thus, they play a key role in understanding the gap in the mass function between stars and planets. However, due to their faint nature, previous searches are inevitably limited to the solar neighbourhood (20 pc). To improve our knowledge of the low mass part of the initial stellar mass function and the star formation history of the MilkyWay, it is crucial to find more distant brown dwarfs. Using JamesWebb Space Telescope (JWST) COSMOS-Web data, this study seeks to enhance our comprehension of the physical characteristics of brown dwarfs situated at a distance of kpc scale. The exceptional sensitivity of the JWST enables the detection of brown dwarfs that are up to 100 times more distant than those discovered in the earlier all-sky infrared surveys. The large area coverage of the JWST COSMOS-Web survey allows us to find more distant brown dwarfs than earlier JWST studies with smaller area coverages. To capture prominent water absorption features around 2.7 μm, we apply two colour criteria, F115W – F277W + 1 < F277W – F444W and F277W – F444W > 0.9. We then select point sources by CLASS_STAR, FLUX_RADIUS, and SPREAD_MODEL criteria. Faint sources are visually checked to exclude possibly extended sources. We conduct SED fitting and MCMC simulations to determine their physical properties and associated uncertainties. Our search reveals 25 T-dwarf candidates and 2 Y-dwarf candidates, more than any previous JWST brown dwarf searches. They are located from 0.3 kpc to 4 kpc away from the Earth. The spatial number density of 900-1050 K dwarf is (2.0 ± 0.9) × 10–6 pc–3, 1050–1200 K dwarf is (1.2 ± 0.7) × 10–6 pc–3, and 1200–1350 K dwarf is (4.4 ± 1.3) × 10–6 pc–3. The cumulative number count of our brown dwarf candidates is consistent with the prediction from a standard double exponential model. Three of our brown dwarf candidates were detected by HST, with transverse velocities 12 ± 5 km s–1, 12 ± 4 km s–1, and 17 ± 6 km s–1. Along with earlier studies, the JWST has opened a new window of brown dwarf research in the MilkyWay thick disk and halo.

Few studies have examined the influence of pre-exercise meals with different glycaemic indices (GIs) on substrate oxidation and non-homeostatic appetite (i.e. food reward) in adults of various ages and ethnicities. We aimed to examine the effects of pre-exercise high and low GI meals on substrate oxidation and food reward in middle-aged Japanese women. This randomised crossover trial included fifteen middle-aged women (aged 40⋅9 ± 6⋅5 years, mean ± sd). The participants consumed a high or low GI breakfast at 09.00 and rested until 11.00. Thereafter, participants performed a 60-min walk at 50 % of their estimated maximum oxygen uptake (11.00–12.00) and rested until 13.00. Expired gas samples were collected every 30 min prior to walking, and samples were collected continuously throughout the walking and post-walking periods. Blood samples and subjective appetite ratings were collected every 30 min, except during walking. The Leeds Food Preference Questionnaire in Japanese (LFPQ-J) was used to assess food reward at 09.00, 10.00, and 13.00 h. The cumulative fat oxidation during exercise was higher in the low GI trial than in the high GI trial (P = 0⋅03). The cumulative carbohydrate oxidation during walking was lower in the low GI trial than in the high GI trial (P = 0⋅01). Trial-by-time interactions were not found for any food-reward parameters between trials. Low GI meals elicited enhanced fat oxidation during a subsequent 60-min walk in middle-aged women. However, meals with different GIs did not affect food reward evaluated over time in the present study.

Collision of two counterflowing gravity currents of equal densities and heights was investigated by means of three-dimensional high-resolution simulations with the goal of understanding the flow structures and energetics in the collision region in more detail. The lifetime of collision is approximately $3 \tilde {H}/\tilde {u}_f$, where $\tilde {H}$ is the depth of heavy and ambient fluids, and $\tilde {u}_f$ is the front velocity of the approaching gravity currents, and the lifetime of collision can be divided into three phases. During Phase I, $-0.2 \leqslant (\tilde {t}-\tilde {t}_c) \tilde {u}_f/\tilde {H} \leqslant 0.5$, where $\tilde {t}$ is the time, and $\tilde {t}_c$ is the time instance at which the two colliding gravity currents have fully osculated, geometric distortions of the gravity current fronts result in stretching of pre-existing vorticity in the wall-normal direction inside the fronts, and an array of vertical vortices extending throughout the updraught fluid column develop along the interface separating the two colliding gravity currents. The array of vertical vortices is responsible for the mixing between the heavy fluids of the two colliding gravity currents and for the production of turbulent kinetic energy in the collision region. The presence of the top boundary deflects the updraughts into the horizontal direction, and a number of horizontal streamwise vortices are generated close to the top boundary. During Phase II, $0.5 \leqslant (\tilde {t}-\tilde {t}_c) \tilde {u}_f/\tilde {H} \leqslant 1.2$, the horizontal streamwise vortices close to the top boundary induce turbulent buoyancy flux and break up into smaller structures. While the production of turbulent kinetic energy weakens, the rate of transfer of energy to turbulent flow due to turbulent buoyancy flux reaches its maximum and becomes the primary supply in the turbulent kinetic energy in Phase II. During Phase III, $1.2 \leqslant (\tilde {t}-\tilde {t}_c) \tilde {u}_f/\tilde {H} \leqslant 2.8$, the collided fluid slumps away from the collision region, while the production of turbulent kinetic energy, turbulent buoyancy flux and dissipation of energy attenuate. From the point of view of energetics, the production of turbulent kinetic energy and turbulent buoyancy flux transfers energy away from the mean flow to the turbulent flow during the collision. Our study complements previous experimental investigations on the collision of gravity currents in that the flow structures, spatial distribution and temporal evolution of the mean flow and turbulent flow characteristics in the collision region are presented clearly. It is our understanding that such complete information on the energy budgets in the collision region can be difficult to attain in laboratory experiments.

Accumulating evidence suggests that dysfunction of the amygdala is related to abnormal fear processing, anxiety, and social behaviors noted in autistic spectrum disorders (ASDs). In addition, studies have shown that disrupted brain serotonin homeostasis is linked to ASD. With a valproate (VPA)-induced rat ASD model, we investigated the possible role of amygdala serotonin homeostasis in autistic phenotypes and further explored the underlying mechanism. We first discovered that the distribution of tryptophan hydroxylase immunoreactivity in the caudal raphe system was modulated on postnatal day (PD) 28 of the VPA-exposed offspring. Then, we found a significantly higher serotonin transporter availability in the amygdala of the VPA-exposed offspring on PD 56 by using single photon emission computed tomography and computed tomography co-registration following injection of 123I-labeled 2-((2-(dimethylamino)methyl)phenyl)thio)-5-iodophenylamine(123I[ADAM]). Furthermore, treatment with 8-hydroxy-2-(di-n-propylamino)tetralin (8-OH-DPAT), a 5-HT1A receptor agonist, increased social interaction and improved fear memory extinction in the VPA-exposed offspring. 8-OH-DPAT treatment also reversed the characteristics of miniature excitatory post-synaptic currents as well as paired pulse facilitation observed in lateral amygdala slices. These results provided further evidence to support the role of the amygdala in characteristic behavioral changes in the rat ASD model. The serotonergic projections that modulate the amygdala function might play a certain role in the development and treatment of behavioral symptoms exhibited in individuals with ASD.

A low-resistance back contact for n-CdS/p-CdTe solar cells has been developed, which utilizes a thermally evaporated MoOx thin film as the buffer layer between the p-CdTe and the back electrode. The low-resistance behavior of back contact is attributed to the high work function of MoOx, which reportedly is as high as 6.8 eV, and thus adequately matches that of p-CdTe. With MoOx as the buffer, a variety of common metals, even those with a low work function such as Al, have been found to be useful as the electrode in forming the back contact. Other advantages of the MoOx buffer include dry application by vacuum deposition, and thus it is particularly suitable for the fabrication of ultra-thin CdTe solar cells without introducing additional shorting defects. Surface cleaning of CdTe films prior to MoOx deposition has also been studied. The cell stability has been evaluated through thermal annealing tests. Thermal degradation has been explained in terms of oxidation of the metal electrodes. CdTe cells with high efficiency and good stability have been demonstrated with MoOx as the back contact buffer and Ni as the electrode.

Glycogen stored in skeletal muscle is the main fuel for endurance exercise. The present study examined the effects of oral hydroxycitrate (HCA) supplementation on post-meal glycogen synthesis in exercised human skeletal muscle. Eight healthy male volunteers (aged 22·0 (se 0·3) years) completed a 60-min cycling exercise at 70–75 % and received HCA or placebo in a crossover design repeated after a 7 d washout period. They consumed 500 mg HCA or placebo with a high-carbohydrate meal (2 g carbohydrate/kg body weight, 80 % carbohydrate, 8 % fat, 12 % protein) for a 3-h post-exercise recovery. Muscle biopsy samples were obtained from vastus lateralis immediately and 3 h after the exercise. We found that HCA supplementation significantly lowered post-meal insulin response with similar glucose level compared to placebo. The rate of glycogen synthesis with the HCA meal was approximately onefold higher than that with the placebo meal. In contrast, GLUT4 protein level after HCA supplementation was significantly decreased below the placebo level, whereas expression of fatty acid translocase (FAT)/CD36 mRNA was significantly increased above the placebo level. Furthermore, HCA supplementation significantly increased energy reliance on fat oxidation, estimated by the gaseous exchange method. However, no differences were found in circulating NEFA and glycerol levels with the HCA meal compared with the placebo meal. The present study reports the first evidence that HCA supplementation enhanced glycogen synthesis rate in exercised human skeletal muscle and improved post-meal insulin sensitivity.

Thermo-responsive actuation (thermomechanical effects) based on nematic liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) have become a research priority in the preparation of soft actuators. Nematic LCEs combine the anisotropic features of liquid crystal phases with the rubber elasticity of polymer network. When heated at nematic to isotropic phase transition temperature (N-to-I temp.), a uniaxial thermomechanical deformation of LCEs will undergo at nearly constant volume due to a change of LC director order. Recently, an array of the micro-sized LCE pillars related to such thermomechanical effects have been successfully constructed through a soft lithography technology (i.e., replica molding). The prepared LCE pillars are mono-dispersive and micro-sized. They also possess N-to-I temp. higher than 100°C, largely limiting the available application. By contrast, the present study will report a hexagonal array of nano-sized thermo-responsive pillar actuators that are able to contract and expand in response to temperature changes around a lower N-to-I temp. is manufactured via using reactive rod-like liquid crystal and ultraviolet nanoimprinting technology. According to atomic force microscope (AFM) observation, a hexagonal array of pillars can be easily constructed by nanoimprinting and a responsive surface with a thermo-stimuli-driven roughness change is achieved. The room-temperature AFM scans quantitatively represent the single pillar shows a diameter of ca. 270 nm and 140 nm in depth, and the pitch meaning the averaged inter-pillar distance is measured as ca. 425 nm, thus lying in a nano-sized range. Furthermore, temperature-variable AFM is also utilized to demonstrate the pillar behaves as a thermally-stimulated nano-sized actuator. In our case, when heated above N-to-I phase transition temperature (ca. 65°C), it is clearly observed that the pillar diameter is expanded in the order of over 12-15 % and then reversibly contracted in response to temperature drop.

The product and direct role of the rssC gene of Serratia marcescens is unknown. For unraveling the role of the rssC gene, atomic force microscopy has been used to identify the surfaces of intact S. marcescens wild-type CH-1 cells and rssC mutant CH-1ΔC cells. The detailed surface topographies were directly visualized, and quantitative measurements of the physical properties of the membrane structures were provided. CH-1 and CH-1ΔC cells were observed before and after treatment with lysozyme, and their topography-related parameters, e.g., a valley-to-peak distance, mean height, surface roughness, and surface root-mean-square values, were defined and compared. The data obtained suggest that the cellular surface topography of mutant CH-1ΔC becomes rougher and more precipitous than that of wild-type CH-1 cells. Moreover, it was found that, compared with native wild-type CH-1, the cellular surface topography of lysozyme-treated CH-1 was not changed profoundly. The product of the rssC gene is thus predicted to be mainly responsible for fatty-acid biosynthesis of the S. marcescens outer membrane. This study represents the first direct observation of the structural changes in membranes of bacterial mutant cells and offers a new prospect for predicting gene expression in bacterial cells.

Mitochondrial (mt) DNA deletions and low folate status, proposed characteristics of carcinogenesis, in relation to human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) susceptibility are not clearly understood. We hypothesised that low folate status may modify frequencies of mtDNA deletions in humans, both of which could predispose individuals to HCC development. Biochemical folate status of serum and lymphocytes, and frequencies of mtDNA deletions in lymphocytes were determined in ninety HCC cases and ninety cancer-free healthy controls, individually matched by age and sex. The data revealed that HCC patients had lower levels of serum folate (P = 0·0002), lymphocytic folate (P = 0·040) and accumulated higher frequency of lymphocytic mtDNA deletions (P < 0·0001) than the controls. In the total studied subjects, frequencies of lymphocytic mtDNA deletions were associated with hepatitic B infection (P = 0·004) and HCC incidents (P = 0·001), and were correlated with serum folate (r − 0·155; P = 0·041), lymphocyte folate (r − 0·314; P = 0·0001), levels of glutamate-oxaloacetate transaminase (GOT) (r 0·206; P = 0·006), glutamate-pyruvate transaminase (GPT) (r 0·163; P = 0·037) and α-fetal protein concentrations (r 0·212; P = 0·005). After adjustment for age, sex, lifestyle and one-carbon metabolite factors, individuals with low blood folate ( < 11·5 nmol/l) or high mtDNA deletions (Δ threshold cycle number (Ct)>5·3) had increased risks for HCC (OR 7·7, 95 % CI 1·9, 29·9, P = 0·003; OR 5·4; 95 % CI 1·7, 16·8, P = 0·003, respectively). When combined with folate deficiency (serum folate < 14 nmol/l), the OR of HCC in individuals with high levels of lymphocytic mtDNA deletions was enhanced (OR 13·3; 95 % CI 1·45, 122; P = 0·008). Further controlling for GOT and GPT levels, however, negated those effects on HCC risk. Taken together, the data suggest that biochemical folate status and liver injuries are important modulators to lymphocytic mtDNA deletions. The mt genetic instability that results from a high rate of mtDNA deletions and/or low folate status increased the risk for HCC, which is mediated by clinical hepatic lesions.

We have fabricated La0.6Ca0.4MnO3 periodic arrays exhibiting tunable optical properties and magnetic properties using nontoxic and environmentally friendly electron beam resist made from La0.6Ca0.4MnO3 sol-gel precursor. We studied their unique optical properties by using the spectral microreflectometer and their magnetic properties using the superconducting quantum interference device and magnetic force microscopy. Additionally, the resist has the ability to demonstrate both positive and negative resist behaviors depending on the electron beam dosage. With these special characteristics, we can fabricate periodic structure on a thin film possessing controlled optical reflectance properties with one fixed design electron beam pattern without changing the structural parameters but changing the electron beam dosage only. Our approach provides an uncomplicated route for the fabrication of nanometer scale magnetic patterns, which serve as the building blocks in the search for novel properties of periodic magnetic arrays.

Mesoporous silica materials have received much interest due to commercial applications in chemical separations and heterogeneous catalysis. Recent studies have reported via a sol-gel nanocasting technique, monolithic mesoporous silica with wormlike pore framework could be prepared by utilizing room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) as templates and solvents. Although previous reports have indicated that the wormlike pores would be formed in the silica, the detailed pore network structure still remained the crucial issues to be resolved. In the present study, we investigated the pore structure in the monolithic mesoporous silica, which was templated by RTIL (1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium-tetrafluoroborate). We revealed an open fractal pore network with a branched and self-similar appearance was formed by the aggregation of the individual spherical pores. Transmission electron microscopy micrographs displayed that the disordered wormlike pore framework was formed in the silica. Furthermore, the small angle X-ray scattering profile measured herein further exhibited three distinct regions of power-law scattering on the respective length scales. In the high-q region, the profile followed Power behavior and a power-law of -4 was observed for the surface fractal dimension of 2, manifesting the primary pore with a smooth surface and a spherical appearance. In the intermediate-q region, a power-law of -2.5 (mass fractal dimension of 2.5), indicating an open mass fractal network was formed by the aggregation of the individual primary pores. Moreover in the low-q region, the power-law of -4 was observed for mass-fractal agglomerates of aggregates. With the proceeding analysis of unified equation in terms of two structural levels, the radiuses of gyration of primary pore (Rg1)and its aggregates (Rg2) were fitted as ca. 0.9 nm and 5.5 nm, respectively. For a spherical-model pore, the radius of pore (R) was ca. 1.16 nm; thus, the averaged pore diameter (D) was 2.32 nm. The number of primary pores in a fractal aggregate (degree of aggregation, z) was calculated as ca. 67.

In this paper, we report that the experimental procedures for the preparation of conductive color powders that were aggregated from color pigment and conductive materials. We first modified the pigment and make the particles surface to have charges (ex: positive) and modified another conductive materials like ITO、Au、Ag particles or conductive polymer to be opposite charges (ex: negative). Then these two kinds of charge particles will aggregate in appropriate processing by static electricity and form a powder. After annealing treatment, the conductive color powder with ITO particles reveals good thermal stability and lower surface resistivity.

Previous studies with folate/methyl-deficient rat models proposed the role of folate deficiency in hepatocarcinogenesis and tumour progression. We investigated the relationship between folate status and tumour progression in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Ninety HCC patients (age 62 (sd 10) years) recruited through the Department of Internal Medicine, Chi-Mei Hospital, participated in this cross-sectional study. According to the clinical criteria, 44 % showed marginal folate deficiency (serum folate 7–14 nmol/l; folate intake 278 (sd 212) μg/d), and 16 % were folate deficient ( < 7 nmol/l; 207 (sd 113) μg/d). Serum folate showed inverse correlations with three elements of tumour progression: tumour size (r − 0·29; P = 0·005), tumour multiplicity (r − 0·24; P = 0·018) and metastasis (r − 0·39; P = 0·0001). When HCC progression was categorised into stages I to IV, serum folate decreased as HCC stage progressed (stage I, 24·5 (sd 11·5); stage IV, 10·3 (sd 3·3) nmol/l; P = 0·032). After adjustment for age, sex, lifestyle and dietary factors, patients with low blood folate status (serum folate < 14 nmol/l) had increased risks for advanced tumour progression in large tumours (OR 7·1 (95 % CI 2·27, 21·9); P = 0·0007), tumour multiplicity (OR 3·2 (95 % CI 1·07, 3·51); P = 0·004) and metastasis (OR 4·5 (95 % CI 1·11, 18·4); P = 0·03) relative to those with normal folate status. Further controlling for liver injury, tumour proliferation and tumour stage, however, negated the effect of folate on advanced tumour progression. The data thus suggest that low blood folate status could be a risk factor for tumour progression, which is modulated by clinical lesions present in HCC patients. Future studies with larger sample sizes are warranted to explore the joint effects of low folate and hepatic lesions in human HCC malignancy.
