Average lifespans for people with physical disabilities are increasing; yet there is limited knowledge about their perceptions of what it means to age well. The criteria for Rowe and Kahn’s influential model of successful ageing effectively preclude people ageing with a long-term disability. Several authors have attempted to develop more-inclusive models of successful ageing. The aim of this study was to explore what successful ageing means for people ageing with either spinal cord injury (SCI) or post-polio syndrome (PPS). We used an emic-based methodology, and recruited from Australia 17 participants aged 40–78 years. Nine participants (one male, eight female) had acquired poliomyelitis in childhood and experienced PPS, and eight participants (seven male, one female) had acquired an SCI 15 or more years ago. We used semi-structured interviews to elicit participants’ views on the dimensions important to ageing successfully with a disability, and analysed the transcripts using inductive thematic analysis. We identified eight themes, which related to: (1) maintaining physical health, (2) retaining cognitive abilities, (3) a sense of safety and security, (4) being treated with fairness and respect, (5) positive psychological resources, (6) independence and autonomy, (7) social engagement and participation in community and (8) a sense of purpose. We used the findings to construct a multi-dimensional successful ageing model for those ageing with SCI or PPS. The model includes insights from lay perspectives that further illustrate the role broader society plays in supporting or hindering individuals to age successfully, and has implications for health-care and government services.

Objectives: Older people with care needs are often supported by their older care-partners (50+). Over time, the increased demand in care needs can result in the care partner placing their own health needs aside. This study was aimed at establishing and piloting a novel co-designed Carer Health and Wellbeing Service (CHWS) that offers multidisciplinary (social work, psychology, occupational therapy, and physiotherapy) one-to-one support to care partners.

Methods: We conducted a pre-post 6-month study design including qualitative and quantitative Methods. Consenting individuals attending the CHWS completed five measures pre- and post- their interaction with the CHWS: Carer Support Needs Assessment Tool (CSNAT); Preparedness for Caregiving Scale (PCS); Family Appraisal of Caregiving Questionnaire (FACQ); EuroQoL Five Dimension Five Level Scale (EQ-5D-5L); and Health Economics Survey.

Results: Service operation commenced 1 day/week in March 2024 with 16 participants to date. Preliminary pre- service use indicates care partners feel underprepared for the carer role (particularly emotionally and psychologically), experience high levels of guilt when addressing their own care needs and are unsure about how to advocate or navigate the existing support system. Care partners have been coached to identify, prioritize, and address their current health and wellbeing needs. Additional findings regarding the implementation of the CHWS will be reported in this presentation.

Conclusions: The preliminary sample presents several emotional and psychological needs that need addressing. These will inform the type of support services to be provided as part of the CHWS, which will also be presented at the conference.

The impact of global climate events on local ecosystems can vary spatially. Understanding this potential heterogeneity can illuminate which environments will be most impacted and the proximal drivers of ecosystem responses. Cenomanian–Turonian marine deposits of the Western Interior Seaway (WIS) record paleoceanographic changes associated with the Greenhorn transgression and the onset of Oceanic Anoxic Event 2 (OAE2). They provide an ideal setting to study basin-wide paleoecological responses during a global perturbation. Here, we integrate benthic foraminiferal assemblages from before, during, and after OAE2 via multivariate ordination analysis to examine spatial patterns in faunal responses across the western United States on a common scale and to interrogate a previously defined faunal marker commonly used for basin-wide correlation, the Benthonic Zone (BZ). We identify oxygenation and organic matter quality as primary and secondary controls of faunal variation across the 10 stratigraphic records and use this variation to infer paleoenvironmental changes. Stratigraphic trends reveal, in contrast to previous studies, deoxygenation at the onset of OAE2. They also reveal temporal patterns in oxygenation and productivity consistent with the gradual northward migration of a southern water mass into the WIS. This spatial heterogeneity hinders the use of the BZ as a temporal marker, because assemblages change in response to diachronous environmental change, and thus timing of the BZ with respect to OAE2 is not consistent across the basin. Our study demonstrates that regional processes can overshadow ecosystem responses to global events and underscores the importance of considering how changes in the position of water masses impact the expression of global biogeochemical perturbations.

Fasting triacylglycerols have long been associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) and other cardiometabolic conditions. Evidence suggests that non-fasting triglycerides (i.e. measured within 8 h of eating) better predict CVD than fasting triglycerides, which has led several organisations to recommend non-fasting lipid panels as the new clinical standard. However, unstandardised assessment protocols associated with non-fasting triglyceride measurement may lead to misclassification, with at-risk individuals being overlooked. A third type of triglyceride assessment, postprandial testing, is more controlled, yet historically has been difficult to implement due to the time and effort required to execute it. Here, we review differences in assessment, the underlying physiology and the pathophysiological relevance of elevated fasting, non-fasting and postprandial triglycerides. We also present data suggesting that there may be a distinct advantage of postprandial triglycerides, even over non-fasting triglycerides, for early detection of CVD risk and offer suggestions to make postprandial protocols more clinically feasible.

The Taipan galaxy survey (hereafter simply ‘Taipan’) is a multi-object spectroscopic survey starting in 2017 that will cover 2π steradians over the southern sky (δ ≲ 10°, |b| ≳ 10°), and obtain optical spectra for about two million galaxies out to z < 0.4. Taipan will use the newly refurbished 1.2-m UK Schmidt Telescope at Siding Spring Observatory with the new TAIPAN instrument, which includes an innovative ‘Starbugs’ positioning system capable of rapidly and simultaneously deploying up to 150 spectroscopic fibres (and up to 300 with a proposed upgrade) over the 6° diameter focal plane, and a purpose-built spectrograph operating in the range from 370 to 870 nm with resolving power R ≳ 2000. The main scientific goals of Taipan are (i) to measure the distance scale of the Universe (primarily governed by the local expansion rate, H0) to 1% precision, and the growth rate of structure to 5%; (ii) to make the most extensive map yet constructed of the total mass distribution and motions in the local Universe, using peculiar velocities based on improved Fundamental Plane distances, which will enable sensitive tests of gravitational physics; and (iii) to deliver a legacy sample of low-redshift galaxies as a unique laboratory for studying galaxy evolution as a function of dark matter halo and stellar mass and environment. The final survey, which will be completed within 5 yrs, will consist of a complete magnitude-limited sample (i ⩽ 17) of about 1.2 × 106 galaxies supplemented by an extension to higher redshifts and fainter magnitudes (i ⩽ 18.1) of a luminous red galaxy sample of about 0.8 × 106 galaxies. Observations and data processing will be carried out remotely and in a fully automated way, using a purpose-built automated ‘virtual observer’ software and an automated data reduction pipeline. The Taipan survey is deliberately designed to maximise its legacy value by complementing and enhancing current and planned surveys of the southern sky at wavelengths from the optical to the radio; it will become the primary redshift and optical spectroscopic reference catalogue for the local extragalactic Universe in the southern sky for the coming decade.

Against the background of population ageing and increasing cultural diversity in many Western countries, the study examined differences and similarities between Australian-born people and Chinese immigrants in their relationships with adult children. The specific research questions were: (a) are there differences between these groups in the nature of parent–child relationships; and (b) if there were differences, did these differences reflect the Confucian concept of filial piety among older Chinese immigrants. The solidarity–conflict model and the concept of ambivalence were used to quantify parent–child relationships. Data from 122 community-dwelling people aged 65 and over (60 Australian-born and 62 Chinese-born people) were collected using standardised interviews. There were significant differences between the two groups for all relationship dimensions except associative solidarity. Compared to Australian participants, Chinese participants were more likely to live with their children. However, when they did not live with their children, they lived further away. They were also more likely to receive, but less likely to provide, instrumental help. Finally, they reported higher levels of normative solidarity, conflict and ambivalence, and lower levels of affectual and consensual solidarity. The differences in solidarity dimensions persisted when socio-demographic variables were controlled for. The study revealed complex differences in the nature of older parent–child relationships between Australian-born people and Chinese immigrants. Some of these differences, such as more prevalent multigenerational living among older Chinese immigrants, likely reflect the strong influence of filial piety among this group. However, differences in other dimensions, such as lower levels of consensual solidarity, might be associated with the Chinese participants’ experience as immigrants. This study also highlights the usefulness of the solidarity–conflict model as a theoretical framework to understand the nature of parent–child relationships among older Chinese immigrants.

This impressive collection of papers encompasses key themes at the heart of current research on anxiety in older adults, confirming that the study of anxiety in older adults has, indeed come of age (Beekman et al., 2015). The papers range from those providing in-depth exploration of an aspect of anxiety, such as the review by Hughes and colleagues of the concepts encompassed by the term “fear of falling” (Hughes et al., 2015), to those dealing with the assessment of anxiety, such as those by Mueller (Mueller et al., 2015) and Nitschke Massena (Nitschke Massena et al., 2015), while yet others address important issues in relation to anxiety treatment. This demonstrates the progress that has been made in recent years in our understanding and treatment of this significant group of disorders. I took a particular interest in reading these papers from the perspective of a clinician, and in this commentary will focus on themes and findings that I found to be of particular relevance to the mental health practitioner.

Screening measures such as the 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15) (Sheikh and Yesavage, 1986) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) (Zigmond and Snaith, 1983) are important tools in the recognition of depressive symptoms in older people. While these measures are widely used, there is evidence of specific weaknesses in some cohorts and contexts, with the GDS-15 showing limitations in the context of cognitive impairment (Gilley and Wilson, 1997), and the depression subscale of the HADS (HADS-D) losing sensitivity in the context of older participants in hospital inpatient settings (Davies et al., 1993).

It is well established that depression is common in late life and associated with a range of consequences for the individual and those close to them. These consequences include higher use of health services and declines in functional ability (Luppa et al., 2007), not to mention negative subjective experiences, such as reduced engagement with, and enjoyment of day-to-day activities. Depression in late life is a heterogeneous condition made more complex by the links between depression, cognitive decline and dementia. The “Vascular Depression Hypothesis” suggests that a subset of late life depressive disorders are caused by cerebrovascular disease (Taylor, 2014), but questions about the relationships between depression and cognitive decline remain unanswered. The paper chosen as the paper of the month in this issue of International Psychogeriatrics addresses one of these questions, namely, whether we can identify clinical signs and symptoms that predict cognitive decline in individuals diagnosed with depression. This question is of great clinical relevance, as not all patients and clinicians will have access to the neuroimaging or detailed neuropsychological assessment that could cast light on risk for cognitive deterioration.

It is well-documented that the population of much of the developed world is aging. On the one hand, this represents a success story in terms of reducing deaths from infectious and a number of systemic diseases, most notably cardiovascular disease. On the other hand, it also presents a challenge to provide adequate health services to a population with rapidly increasing longevity, as well as an opportunity to develop policies that can assist in promoting good physical and mental health. A number of authors have asked whether we are ready to meet the challenges of an aging population (Doyle et al., 2009; Connolly, 2012). Over the years, prominent psychologists have suggested that clinical psychology could play a greater role in the provision of services for older adults, and lamented the apparent lack of enthusiasm on the part of psychologists to work with this group (e.g. Karel et al., 2012). In this paper, we examine a range of questions pertinent to this theme: where are the psychologists in the provision of mental health services to older adults? What contribution can psychologists make to improve the mental health of this growing sector of the population? How can we encourage more psychologists to specialize in working with older adults?
