In this study, we examine whether strategic voting – in which a voter seeks to maximize the expected payoff from casting a ballot – occurred among late voters in the 2018 Taipei City mayoral election. This multi-candidate mayoral contest was noteworthy because ballot-counting started before all the votes had been cast, with preliminary results being leaked to the media. Theoretically, having access to real-time updates of voting figures could have influenced the decision of voters who were still in line waiting to cast their ballots. Analysis and reconstruction of aggregate polling data, however, demonstrate that there was very little (if any) strategic voting among these late voters on election day, even if they had information that might have induced them to vote strategically.

This study aimed to evaluate associations between toxoplasmosis and psychiatric disorders in Taiwan based on the National Health Insurance Research Database, Taiwan (1997–2013). Patients newly diagnosed with toxoplasmosis formed the case group (n = 259), and the control group included propensity-score matched patients without toxoplasmosis (n = 1036). The primary outcome was incidence of psychiatric disorders. Cox proportional hazards regression and stratified analyses were performed to examine risk of developing specific psychiatric disorders between patients with and without toxoplasmosis. Patients with toxoplasmosis had significantly higher incidence of psychiatric disorders than those without toxoplasmosis (P = 0.016). A significant difference was found in numbers of psychiatric disorders between the two groups during 14 years of follow-up (log-rank P < 0.001). Those with toxoplasmosis had significantly higher risk of bipolar disorder [adjusted hazard ratio (aHR = 3.60, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 2.07, 7.26), depression (aHR = 4.94, 95% CI = 2.15, 11.80) and anxiety (aHR = 5.36, 95% CI = 2.98, 25.88), but no significant between-group differences were found for schizophrenia and other psychiatric disorders. In conclusion, the present nationwide population-based analysis revealed that Toxoplasma gondii infection in Taiwan significantly increases the risk for developing bipolar disorder, depression and anxiety, but not for schizophrenia and other psychiatric disorders.

Emotion recognition is the ability to identify what people would think someone is feeling from moment to moment and understand the connection between his/her feelings and expressions. In today's world, human–computer interaction (HCI) interface undoubtedly plays an important role in our daily life. Toward harmonious HCI interface, automated analysis and recognition of human emotion has attracted increasing attention from the researchers in multidisciplinary research fields. In this paper, a survey on the theoretical and practical work offering new and broad views of the latest research in emotion recognition from bimodal information including facial and vocal expressions is provided. First, the currently available audiovisual emotion databases are described. Facial and vocal features and audiovisual bimodal data fusion methods for emotion recognition are then surveyed and discussed. Specifically, this survey also covers the recent emotion challenges in several conferences. Conclusions outline and address some of the existing emotion recognition issues.

This study presents a polymerization of L-lactide and poly(ethylene glycol) of various molecular weights to produce biodegradable poly(L-lactide)-poly(ethylene glycol) (L-PEG) block copolymers. The chemical structures, crystallization behavior and thermal properties of L-PEG copolymers were investigated using proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The analysis of isothermal crystallization behavior of L-PEG copolymers using the Avrami equation revealed that the grain growth of L-PEG200 and 600 were unstable, jumping between one dimension and two dimensions. By contrast, the grain growth of L-PEG2000 was more stable, with a growth trend toward three dimensions. The results of L-PEG isothermal crystallization by DSC indicate that within a range of 123–127 °C, the crystallization rate was higher at lower temperatures. The values of the crystallization constants in the Avrami equation were also lower.

The electrode materials for VRFB should possess higher electric conductivity, corrosion resistance and hydrophilic properties in sulfuric acid. The characteristics of the electrode materials affect the stability and the energy efficiency of VRFB. Carbon materials are the best suited for VRFB applications. In this study, the calcined treatment, acid treatment and ozone treatment were used to modify the surface of carbon papers. The redox reaction of [VO]2+/[VO2]+ on the modified carbon papers was evaluated by cyclic voltammetry (CV). The surface compositions of carbon materials were analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS). The experimental results reveal that three oxidative methods enhance the redox reaction of [VO]2+/[VO2]+. The calcined treatments and acid treatments also enhanced hydrolysis reaction. The mole ratio of O/C apparently increased, but the binding energy of C1s and O1s were not chemically shifted in the acid treatment. The intensity of binding energy of O1s, between 532 eV and 534 eV, apparently increased in the ozone and calcined treatments. The Ox treated samples were more hydrophilic than the Oz treated samples. In the Ox treated samples, the decrease of Rct value indicates that was contributed from the redox reaction of [VO]2+/[VO2]+ and hydrolysis reaction. It does not completely benefit the energy efficiency of VRFB. The 5 x 5 cm2 modified carbon papers were used as electrode materials in the VRFB. The voltage efficiency, coulomb efficiency and energy efficiency reached 93 %, 90 % and 83 %, respectively, at a current density of 12 mA．cm-2 at 0.8-1.8 V.

The pathological mechanism of restenosis is primarily attributed to excessive proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC). The preventive effects of ethanol extract of Dunaliella salina (EDS) on balloon injury-induced neointimal formation were investigated. To explore its molecular mechanism in regulating cell proliferation, we first showed that EDS markedly reduced the human aortic smooth muscle cell proliferation via the inhibition of 5′-bromo-2′-deoxyuridine (BrdU) incorporation at 40 and 80 μg/ml. This was further supported by the G0/G1-phase arrest using a flow cytometric analysis. In an in vivo study, EDS at 40 and 80 μg/ml was previously administered to the Sprague–Dawley rats and found that the thickness of neointima, and the ratio of neointima:media were also reduced. EDS inhibited VSMC proliferation in a dose-dependent manner following stimulation of VSMC cultures with 15 % fetal bovine serum (FBS). Suppressed by EDS were 15 % FBS-stimulated intracellular Raf, phosphorylated extracellular signal-regulated kinases (p-Erk) involved in cell-cycle arrest and proliferating cell nuclear antigen. Phosphorylated focal adhesion kinase (p-FAK) was also suppressed by EDS. Also active caspase-9, caspase-3 and cleaved poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) protein expression levels were increased by administration with EDS; the apoptotic pathway may play an important role in the regulatory effects of EDS on cell growth. These observations provide a mechanism of EDS in attenuating cell proliferation, thus as a potential intervention for restenosis.

Eggs (1000–100 000/animal) of Taiwan Taenia were inoculated per os into 14 Small-Ear-Miniature (SEM), 19 Landrace-Small-Ear-Miniature (L-SEM), and 5 Duroc-Yorkshire-Landrace (DYL) pigs. These animals were sacrificed 7–107 days after infection. Thirty-four pigs were found to be infected with Taiwan Taenia cysticerci and the infection rates of SEM, L-SEM, and DYL were 86%, 89% and 100% respectively. The cysticerci recovery rates of SEM, L-SEM and DYL pigs were 27·2%, 1·7% and 0·27% respectively. Cysticerci were recovered only from the livers and none were found in muscles, viscera or other parts of the carcasses. More cysticerci were located in the liver parenchyma (71%) than on the liver surface (29%). Taiwan Taenia cysticerci were smaller than those of classical T. saginata or T. solium. Moreover, Taiwan Taenia cysticerci had 2 rows of rudimentary hooklets on the scolex. The results of this study indicate that young pigs are good intermediate hosts for Taiwan Taenia and that the SEM pig is a satisfactory host for experimental studies with this tapeworm. These results were similar to other studies with different geographic strains of the T. saginata-like tapeworm in the Far East. These strains appear to be the same and possibly a new species.

We have fabricated La0.6Ca0.4MnO3 periodic arrays exhibiting tunable optical properties and magnetic properties using nontoxic and environmentally friendly electron beam resist made from La0.6Ca0.4MnO3 sol-gel precursor. We studied their unique optical properties by using the spectral microreflectometer and their magnetic properties using the superconducting quantum interference device and magnetic force microscopy. Additionally, the resist has the ability to demonstrate both positive and negative resist behaviors depending on the electron beam dosage. With these special characteristics, we can fabricate periodic structure on a thin film possessing controlled optical reflectance properties with one fixed design electron beam pattern without changing the structural parameters but changing the electron beam dosage only. Our approach provides an uncomplicated route for the fabrication of nanometer scale magnetic patterns, which serve as the building blocks in the search for novel properties of periodic magnetic arrays.

We report on a method based on cross-sectional scanning photoelectron microscopy and spectroscopy (XSPEM/S) for studying electronic structure of III-nitride surfaces and interfaces on a submicrometer scale. Cross-sectional III-nitride surfaces prepared by in situ cleavage were investigated to eliminate the polarization effects associated with the interface charges/dipoles normal to the cleaved surface. In contrast to the as-grown polar surfaces which show strong surface band bending, the cleaved nonpolar surfaces have been found to be under the flat-band conditions. Therefore, both doping and compositional junctions can be directly visualized at the cleaved nonpolar surfaces. Additionally, we show that the “intrinsic” valence band offsets at the cleaved III-nitride heterojunctions can be unambiguously determined.

We reviewed genotyping and medical records of 53 patients with end-stage renal disease and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteremia in a medical center in Taiwan. In multivariate analysis, hospitalization within the previous year was independently negatively associated with infection with community-associated MRSA strains, and an increased number of years of dialysis predicted the recovery of patients infected with community-associated MRSA strains.

This study presents the mechanical and electrical properties (including elastic modulus, yield strength and electrical resistance) of PDMS/CNTs nanocomposites. The elastic modulus and yield strength were determined from tensile tests. In addition, a high resistance meter was used to measure the electrical resistances of the PDMS/CNTs nanocomposites. The test specimens of nanocomposites were manufactured using the thermoforming method. There were two recipes used during the thermoforming process: 100 °C for 1 hour, and 150 °C for 15 minutes. The mixtures of PDMS and CNTs were stirred by ultrasonic instrument to prevent polymerization. A feeler gap was used to define the thickness of the specimens. Therefore, the thickness could be controlled within the range of ∼100 μm. Four different kinds of specimens were investigated, including pure PDMS, 1.0 wt%, 2.0 wt% and 4.0 wt% CNTs polymeric composites. As for the l00°C recipe, the elastic modulus of pure PDMS, 1.0 wt%, 2.0 wt%, and 4.0 wt% CNTs were 1.05MPa, 1.17MPa, 1.10MPa and 1.35MPa, respectively. A for the l50°C recipe, the elastic modulus of pure PDMS, 1.0 wt%, 2.0 wt% and 4.0 wt% CNTs were 1.32MPa, 1.42MPa, 1.43MPa, and 1.54MPa. The differences of electrical resistance of PDMS/CNTs nanocomposites at two different conditions and the microstructures composed of the mixtures are also described in this article.
