Grandparent childcare is important to support parents’ work/care reconciliation. Research has begun to identify relationships between grandparent childcare patterns and policy settings. However, this work is disparate and focused on childcare policy, with little engagement with the broader range of policies that shape grandparent childcare. A holistic approach to understanding the relationship between policies and grandparent childcare is important to capture the intergenerational dynamics of family decisions about childcare and the complementarities (or not) of policies in different domains. This scoping review identifies policies that directly aim to shape grandparents’ involvement in childcare and that indirectly shape configurations of care. Most literature focuses on childcare and parental leave policies’ impact on parental demand for grandparent childcare. But a wider, intergenerational, policy lens reveals that policies (such as retirement income policies) affect parents’ demand for, and grandparents’ supply of childcare, and that policies in different domains are not always aligned.

The growth in wirelessly enabled sensor network technologies has enabled the low cost deployment of sensor platforms with applications in a range of sectors and communities. In the agricultural domain such sensors have been the foundation for the creation of decision support tools that enhance farm operational efficiency. This Research Reflection illustrates how these advances are assisting dairy farmers to optimise performance and illustrates where emerging sensor technology can offer additional benefits. One of the early applications for sensor technology at an individual animal level was the accurate identification of cattle entering into heat (oestrus) to increase the rate of successful pregnancies and thus optimise milk yield per animal. This was achieved through the use of activity monitoring collars and leg tags. Additional information relating to the behaviour of the cattle, namely the time spent eating and ruminating, was subsequently derived from collars giving further insights of economic value into the wellbeing of the animal, thus an enhanced range of welfare related services have been provisioned. The integration of the information from neck-mounted collars with the compositional analysis data of milk measured at a robotic milking station facilitates the early diagnosis of specific illnesses such as mastitis. The combination of different data streams also serves to eliminate the generation of false alarms, improving the decision making capability. The principle of integrating more data streams from deployed on-farm systems, for example, with feed composition data measured at the point of delivery using instrumented feeding wagons, supports the optimisation of feeding strategies and identification of the most productive animals. Optimised feeding strategies reduce operational costs and minimise waste whilst ensuring high welfare standards. These IoT-inspired solutions, made possible through Internet-enabled cloud data exchange, have the potential to make a major impact within farming practices. This paper gives illustrative examples and considers where new sensor technology from the automotive industry may also have a role.

The experiment reported in this research paper aimed to determine whether clinical and subclinical effects on cattle were similar if provided with isoenergetic and isonitrogenous challenge diets in which carbohydrate sources were predominantly starch or sugar. The study was a 3 × 3 Latin square using six adult Jersey cows with rumen cannulae, over 9 weeks. In the first 2 weeks of each 3 week experimental period cows were fed with a maintenance diet and, in the last week, each animal was assigned to one of three diets: a control diet (CON), being a continuation of the maintenance diet; a high starch (HSt) or a high sugar (HSu) diet. Reticuloruminal pH and motility were recorded throughout the study period. Blood and ruminal samples were taken on day-1 (TP-1), day-2 (TP-2) and day-7 (TP-7) of each challenge week. Four clinical variables were recorded daily: diarrhoea, inappetence, depression and ruminal tympany. The effects of treatment, hour of day and day after treatment on clinical parameters were analysed using linear mixed effects (LME) models. Although both challenge diets resulted in a decline in pH, an increase in the absolute pH residuals and an increase in the number of minutes per day under pH 5.8, systemic inflammation was only detected with the HSt diet. The challenge diets differentially modified amplitude and period of reticuloruminal contractions compared with CON diet and both were associated with an increased probability of diarrhoea. The HSu diet reduced the probability of an animal consuming its complete allocation. Because the challenge diets were derived from complex natural materials (barley and molasses respectively), it is not possible to assign all the differential effects to the difference in starch and sugar concentration: non-starch components of barley or non-sugar components of molasses might have contributed to some of the observations. In conclusion, substituting much of the starch with sugar caused no substantial reduction in the acidosis load, but inflammatory response was reduced while feed rejection was increased.

Silicon carbide power devices are purported to be capable of operating at very high temperatures. Current commercially available SiC MOSFETs from a number of manufacturers have been evaluated to understand and quantify the aging processes and temperature dependencies that occur when operated up to 350°C. High temperature constant positive bias stress tests demonstrated a two times increase in threshold voltage from the original value for some device types, which was maintained indefinitely but could be corrected with a long negative gate bias. The threshold voltages were found to decrease close to zero and the on-state resistances increased quite linearly to approximately five or six times their room temperature values. Long term thermal aging of the dies appears to demonstrate possible degradation of the ohmic contacts. This appears as a rectifying response in the I-V curves at low drain-source bias. The high temperature capability of the latest generations of these devices has been proven independently; provided that threshold voltage management is implemented, the devices are capable of being operated and are free from the effects of thermal aging for at least 70 hours cumulative at 300°C.

In this paper, high temperature (>1400°C) thermal oxidation has been applied, for the first time, to 4H-SiC PiN diodes with thick (110 μm) drift regions, for the purpose of increasing the carrier lifetime in the semiconductor. PiN diodes were fabricated using 4H-SiC material that had undergone thermal oxidation performed at 1400°C, 1500°C and 1600°C, then were electrically characterized. Forward current-voltage (I-V) measurements showed that thermally oxidized PiN diodes exhibited considerably improved electrical characteristics, with devices oxidized at 1500°C having a forward voltage drop (VF) of 4.15 V and a differential on-resistance (Ron,diff) of 8.9 mΩ-cm2 at 100 A/cm2 and 25°C. Compared to typical control sample PiN diode characteristics, this equated to an improvement of 8% and 23% for VF and Ron,diff, respectively. From analysis of the reverse recovery characteristics, the carrier lifetime of the PiN diodes oxidized at 1500°C was found to be 1.05 μs, which was an improvement of around 30% compared to the control sample PiN diodes.

The Nature Conservancy takes a strategic and systematic approach to conservation planning. Ecoregional assessments are used to set goals and identify geographical priorities, and Conservation Action Planning is used to develop strategic plans for conservation areas. This study demonstrates how these planning processes were applied at the seascape scale based on a case study of Kimbe Bay, Papua New Guinea. Conservation Action Planning was used to identify key threats and strategies, and systematic conservation planning (similar to that used for ecoregional assessments) was used to design a network of marine protected areas to be resilient to the threat of climate change. The design was based on an assessment of biodiversity and socio-economic values, and identified 14 Areas of Interest that meet specific conservation goals. A detailed community-based planning process is now underway with local communities that own and manage these areas to refine and implement the marine protected area network.

An international consortium of genome centres, advanced development teams and funding agencies has begun the task of sequencing the genome of the parasite Plasmodium falciparum, the most important cause of human malaria. Sequencing is proceeding chromosome by chromosome, and the annotated sequence of chromosome 2 is nearly finished. With the continual release of sequence data as they are generated, malaria researchers have access to a steady stream of genomic sequences and will soon have the complete annotation of all of the estimated 5000–7000 P. falciparum genes. The task will then be how to best apply these data to the development of new anti-malarial drugs, vaccines and diagnostic tests. This review provides a brief overview of the Malaria Genome Sequencing Project and suggests potential directions for future malaria research.

An extensive grid of nonequilibrium ionization models for the X-ray spectra of adiabatic supernova remnants (SNRs) is described. The models are compared to the SSS spectra of remnants in the LMC, the Tycho SNR, and SNR 1006. In Tycho, we show that the observed spectrum requires significantly enhanced abundances of Si and S, and that this conclusion is independent of the detailed ionization and thermal structure in the remnant. We find that the SSS spectrum of SNR 1006 can be fit reasonably by a thermal emission model with abundances of about one half solar. In this model, the weak line emission results from the very low ionization state in the remnant, and not because the X-ray emission is non-thermal. We argue that the failure to detect strong Fe line emission in young Type I SNRs poses a severe problem for models of Type I SN, which predict that most of the ejecta be iron. Finally, the results of UV observations of a star behind SNR 1006 are mentioned; these observations show that the remnant contains a large amount of rapidly moving, cold iron.
