We evaluate the utility of the National Surveys of Attitudes and Sexual Lifestyles (Natsal) undertaken in 2000 and 2010, before and after the introduction of the National Chlamydia Screening Programme, as an evidence source for estimating the change in prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) in England, Scotland and Wales. Both the 2000 and 2010 surveys tested urine samples for CT by Nucleic Acid Amplification Tests (NAATs). We examined the sources of uncertainty in estimates of CT prevalence change, including sample size and adjustments for test sensitivity and specificity, survey non-response and informative non-response. In 2000, the unadjusted CT prevalence was 4.22% in women aged 18–24 years; in 2010, CT prevalence was 3.92%, a non-significant absolute difference of 0.30 percentage points (95% credible interval −2.8 to 2.0). In addition to uncertainty due to small sample size, estimates were sensitive to specificity, survey non-response or informative non-response, such that plausible changes in any one of these would be enough to either reverse or double any likely change in prevalence. Alternative ways of monitoring changes in CT incidence and prevalence over time are discussed.

We show that geophysical methods offer an effective means of quantifying snow thickness and density. Opportunistic (efficient but non-optimized) seismic refraction and ground-penetrating radar (GPR) surveys were performed on Storglaciären, Sweden, co-located with a snow pit that shows the snowpack to be 1.73 m thick, with density increasing from ∼120 to ∼500 kg m–3 (with a +50 kg m–3 anomaly between 0.73 and 0.83 m depth). Depths estimated for two detectable GPR reflectors, 0.76 ±0.02 and 1.71 ± 0.03 m, correlate extremely well with ground-truth observations. Refraction seismic predicts an interface at 1.90 ± 0.31 m depth, with a refraction velocity (3730 ± 190 ms–1) indicative of underlying glacier ice. For density estimates, several standard velocity-density relationships are trialled. In the best case, GPR delivers an excellent density estimate for the upper snow layer (observed = 321 ± 74 kg m–3, estimated = 319 ± 10 kgm–3) but overestimates the density of the lower layer by 20%. Refraction seismic delivers a bulk density of 404 ±22 kgm–3 compared with a ground-truth average of 356 ± 22 kg m–3. We suggest that geophysical surveys are an effective complement to mass-balance measurements (particularly for controlling estimates of snow thickness between pits) but should always be validated against ground-truth observations.

In this paper, we developed and compared several expectation–maximization (EM) algorithms to find maximum likelihood estimates of individual inbreeding coefficients using molecular marker information. The first method estimates the inbreeding coefficient for a single individual and assumes that allele frequencies are known without error. The second method jointly estimates inbreeding coefficients and allele frequencies for a set of individuals that have been genotyped at several loci. The third method generalizes the second method to include the case in which null alleles may be present. In particular, it is able to jointly estimate individual inbreeding coefficients and allele frequencies, including the frequencies of null alleles, and accounts for missing data. We compared our methods with several other estimation procedures using simulated data and found that our methods perform well. The maximum likelihood estimators consistently gave among the lowest root-mean-square-error (RMSE) of all the estimators that were compared. Our estimator that accounts for null alleles performed particularly well and was able to tease apart the effects of null alleles, randomly missing genotypes and differing degrees of inbreeding among members of the datasets we analysed. To illustrate the performance of our estimators, we analysed previously published datasets on mice (Mus musculus) and white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus).

The magnitude of experimental error attaching to one or more field plots is a question of extreme importance in Agricultural Science, because upon its proper recognition depends the degree of confidence which may be attached to the results obtained in field work. A very cursory examination of the results of any set of field trials will serve to show that a pair of plots similarly treated may be expected to yield considerably different results, even when the soil appears to be uniform and the conditions under which the experiment is conducted are carefully designed to reduce errors in weighing and measurement.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is an important cause of morbidity in children worldwide, although data from equatorial regions are limited. We analysed climatic, spatial, and temporal data for children presenting to hospitals in Lombok island, Indonesia with clinical pneumonia. During the study period, 2878 children presented and 741 RSV cases were identified. In multivariate analysis with an 8-day lag, occurrence of rain was associated with 64% higher incidence of RSV disease [incidence rate ratio (IRR) 1·64, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1·13–2·38]. A 1% rise in mean relative humidity and 1°C increase in mean air temperature was associated with a 6% (IRR 1·06, 95% CI 1·03–1·10) and 44% (IRR 1·44, 95% CI 1·24–1·66) increase in RSV cases, respectively. Four statistically significant local clusters of RSV pneumonia were identified within the annual island-wide epidemics. This study demonstrates statistical association of monsoon-associated weather in equatorial Indonesia with RSV. Moreover, within the island-wide epidemics, localized RSV outbreaks suggest local factors influence RSV disease.

A dynamic model of selective harvesting in multi-species, multi-age tropical forests is developed. Forests are predicted to exhibit different optimal harvesting profiles depending on the nature of their joint cost functions and own or cross-species stock effects. The model is applied to the controversy about incentives produced by various taxes. The impacts of specific taxes are shown to depend on the composition of the forest stocks, growth rates, and joint cost effects. Therefore, specific taxes may create different incentives and impacts in Indonesia than in Brazil or Malaysia, for example, suggesting that no single uniform forest tax policy will be appropriate for all countries or all forests.

Body size was measured for 67 of the approximately 120 invertebrate species on Marion Island. These include more than 60% of the 29 acarine families, and more than 80% of the remaining terrestrial invertebrate species. Thus the data are regarded as representative of the entire invertebrate fauna of sub-Antarctic, Marion Island. Length–mass and fresh–dry mass relationships were calculated for orders, families and species to provide a means of estimating body size parameters for species in collections and those which are known from only a few specimens. A comparison of the regression slopes for the different taxonomic ranks indicates that it is better to use regressions from the lowest possible taxonomic level for prediction of body mass. Differences between length–mass relationships for Marion Island insects and continental assemblages raises the question as to the applicability of continental regressions to sub-Antarctic species. This study provides a useful means for estimating body size parameters for Antarctic and sub-Antarctic invertebrates and provides baseline data on an important species trait that seems to be changing with local and global environmental changes.

In investigating pathological changes that occur during development of fibrosis in lungs exposed to silica, we found a significant increase in apoptotic cells in rats exposed to silica by inhalation for 80 days. Since silica is not definitively detected at the light level, we sought to use SEM backscatter imaging to correlate the presence of silica with apoptosis identified by fluorescent assays. To accomplish this, paraffin sections of lungs from rats that had been exposed to silica were placed on carbon planchets. Serial sections were placed on glass slides, immediately before and after the section on the planchet. Using a fluorescein apoptosis detection system (Promega G3250), a TdT-mediated dUTP nick-end labeling (TUNEL) assay was performed on both planchets and slides. The planchets and slides were cover slipped with gel/mount (Biomedia) and viewed in an Olympus AZ70 fluorescent photomicroscope with a wide band blue filter cube. Apoptotic nuclei could be seen in similar regions in both the slide and the planchet preparations.

Mechanical properties of the structural elements of mollusk hard tissues were determined using nanoindentation techniques. Red abalone (Haliotis refuscens) has a dual laminate ceramic/polymer biocomposite, evolved for protection against impact. The nacre (mother-of-pearl) section of the shell has excellent bending strength (180 MPa) and fracture toughness (12 MPa m1/2), orders of magnitude stronger and tougher than monolithic CaCO3, it's primary component. The outer prismatic structure is comprised of columnar calcite (rhombohedral CaCO3) crystallites oriented normal to the shell surface and the inner nacreous structure consists of layers of pseudo-hexagonal shaped aragonite (orthorhombic CaCO3) platelets arranged in a brick and mortar microarchitecture (Fig. 1). The platelets (0.25 μm thick and 5 μm edge length) are surrounded by a thin layer (10-25 nm) of organic phase within and between the individual layers. This sub-um layered structure results in excellent bulk properties, not present in man-made composites of similar phase composition.

A randomized double-blinded study consisting of 107 patients was conducted to compare the effect on post-operative pain relief of intra-articular fentanyl and intra-articular bupivacaine after knee arthroscopy. The results showed that intra-articular bupivacaine produced superior analgesia in the immediate post-operative period. At 2 h post-operatively, the intra-articular bupivacaine group had a mean pain score of 2.0 (standard deviation 2.1, P <0.05) compared with the intra-articular fentanyl group which had a mean pain score of 3.2 (standard deviation 2.3, P <0.05) After 2 h post-operatively, intra-articular bupivacaine and intra-articular fentanyl had a similar effect on pain scores. The mean pain score 18 h post-operatively was 2.7 for the intra-articular bupivacaine group (standard deviation 2.2, P value 0.6) compared with the intra-articular fentanyl group which had a mean pain score of 2.8 (standard deviation 1.9, P value 0.6).

Photo-induced conduction in thin insulating films of diamond was used to obtain STM images indicative of film morphology. UV light was used to generate carriers in the conduction band of diamond films grown on Si (111). Tunneling currents could only be established when the tunnel junction was illuminated. Without the light, no current was measured even with the tip in contact with the surface. Two types of films were studied. A CVD grown diamond film with nitrogen impurities and a diamond-like film grown by laser ablation of graphite. Topological detail was compared to that obtained with an AFM. The correspondence between AFM and photoinduced STM images suggests that the STM images are indicative of film morphology.

The immobilisation of excess weapons plutonium into Synroc can meet all of the important criteria discussed by the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (NAS)(1) for disposal, if the disposal option is pursued rather than options that exploit the energy value of plutonium. This paper summarises the relevant background of Pu incorporation into Synroc, the durability of Pu-containing Synroc and outlines a process flowsheet based on the experience with the 10 kg/hr Synroc Demonstration Plant at ANSTO. The extensive solid solubility of Pu in Synroc, coupled with a very high degree of chemical durability under hydrothermal conditions, makes Synroc ideal as a waste matrix for Pu disposal in deep boreholes to minimise diversion and proliferation risks.

“I took the Canal Zone and let Congress debate, and while the debate goes on the Canal Zone does too,” was Theodore Roosevelt's boast on December 29, 1903. After nearly a century of international maneuvering, TR had merged the Panama Canal with the United States.

Results are presented of an investigation involving 328 pigs on 7 farms in East Anglia, on the effect of oxytetracycline (10 g./ton), oleandomycin (2·5 g./ton) and oxytetracycline (10 g./ton) plus oleandomycin (2·5 g./ton), on the live-weight gain, feed consumption and feed conversion efficiency of pigs from weaning to slaughter at approximately 260 lb. live-weight. Effects on number of days from weaning to slaughter and carcass characteristics are also given.

Both antibiotics gave significant improvements in daily live-weight gain (5·4% for OTC and 4·0% for OM) and feed conversion efficiency (3·9% for OTC and 2·3% for OM). There was a significant negative interaction between the antibiotics on live-weight gain from weaning to slaughter.

The average number of days from weaning to slaughter was significantly reduced by both antibiotics (5·8 days for OTC and 5·4 days for OM) and there was a significant interaction between antibiotics.

Feed conversion efficiency for all pigs was significantly better on those farms where antibiotics had not previously been used but the antibiotic treatment effects were the same in both categories of farm studied.
