For centuries, fossils from the Maastrichtian type locality and adjacent quarries have provided key evidence of vertebrate diversity during the latest Cretaceous, yet until recently the Maastrichtian type area had revealed no important insights into the evolutionary history of birds, one of the world’s most conspicuous groups of extant tetrapods. With the benefit of high-resolution micro-CT scanning, two important avian fossils from the Maastrichtian type area have now been examined in detail, offering profound, complementary insights into the evolutionary history of birds. The holotype specimens of these new taxa, Janavis finalidens Benito, Kuo, Widrig, Jagt and Field, 2022, and Asteriornis maastrichtensis Field, Benito, Chen, Jagt and Ksepka, 2020, were originally collected in the late 1990s, but were only investigated in detail more than twenty years later. Collectively, Janavis and Asteriornis provide some of the best evidence worldwide regarding the factors that influenced stem bird extinction and crown bird survivorship through the Cretaceous-Palaeogene transition, as well as insights into the origins of key anatomical features of birds such as an extensively pneumatised postcranial skeleton, a kinetic palate, and a toothless beak. Asteriornis also provides scarce evidence of a Cretaceous-aged divergence time calibration within the avian crown group, while together, Janavis and Asteriornis constitute the only documented co-occurrence of crown birds and non-neornithine avialans. Here, we review key insights into avian evolutionary history provided by these discoveries from the Maastrichtian stratotype, document undescribed and newly discovered Maastrichtian fossils potentially attributable to Avialae and provide the first histological data for the holotype of Asteriornis, illustrating its skeletal maturity at the time of its death.

Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) proved to be critical points of access for people of color and other underserved populations during the COVID-19 pandemic, administering 61% of their COVID-19 vaccinations to people of color, compared to the 40% rate for the overall United States’ vaccination effort. To better understand the approaches and outcomes of FQHCs in pandemic response, we conducted semi-structured interviews with FQHC health care providers and outreach workers and analyzed them using an inductive qualitative methodology.

We performed a cross-sectional survey of infection preventionists in 60 US community hospitals between April 22 and May 8, 2020. Several differences in hospital preparedness for SARS-CoV-2 emerged with respect to personal protective equipment conservation strategies, protocols related to testing, universal masking, and restarting elective procedures.

The Chicago School of antitrust is often thought to have killed off antitrust enforcement beginning in the late 1970s. In fact, although Chicago school prescriptions were significantly more laissez-faire than the structuralist school Chicago replaced, antitrust enforcement did not die under Chicago's influence. Rather, by directing antitrust to focus on technical economic analysis, Chicago contributed to the creation of a large and entrenched class of antitrust professionals—economists and lawyers—with a vested interest in preserving antitrust as a legal and regulatory enterprise. Today, Chicago School's consumer welfare standard and specific enforcement prescriptions are coming increasingly under political pressure and may be replaced or supplemented in the near term. But Chicago's redirection of antitrust toward technical economic analysis and technocratic reasoning seems likely to remain a durable legacy.

This study extends the limited body of research exploring the association between psychological resources and performance under pressure. It was anticipated that participants’ general self-efficacy and resilience would positively influence skill acquisition rate more under high pressure, than low pressure. Eighty-one undergraduate students (Mage = 22.93; SD = 7.53; 50.6% female) participated in a learning task: to fly a flight simulator. The within-subjects variable was the participant's ability to steadily control the aircraft roll across six trials. Psychological pressure was manipulated between-subjects and general self-efficacy and resilience were measured moderator variables. Findings indicated that under high pressure, higher levels of general self-efficacy and perceived resilience predicted faster initial skill acquisition compared to those with lower levels of these resources. In contrast, in the low-pressure condition, the skill acquisition rate was the same irrespective of psychological resources. This research highlights the importance of psychological resources in pressured training contexts.
