A borosilicate glass, containing 25 wt. % of simulated high-level radioactive waste has been reacted with water at 350°C and 500 bars for 14 and 48 days using large-volume ‘cold-seal’ high-pressure equipment. Under these conditions the glass crystallizes a suite of mineral phases including: albite, NaAlSi3O8; aegirine, NaFeSi2O6; riebeckite, Na2Fe2(Fe,Mg)3Si8O22(OH)2; zektzerite, LiNaZrSi6O15; barium-strontium molybdate, (Ba,Sr)MoO4; stillwellite, (Nd,Ce,La)BSiO5; willemite, Zn2SiO4; smectite; a lithium-sodium borosilicate hydrate; melilite (åkermanite), Ca2MgSi2O7. A description of the morphology of these phases is given, together with a number of chemical analyses. The implications of the incorporation of waste species in these mineral phases to the disposal of high-level radioactive waste is discussed.

Background. Cognitive performance was compared in the genetically and neurobiologically related disorders of Tourette's syndrome (TS) and obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD), in three domains of executive function: planning, decision-making and inhibitory response control.

Method. Twenty TS patients, twenty OCD patients and a group of age- and IQ-matched normal controls completed psychometric and computerized cognitive tests and psychiatric rating scales. The cognitive tests were well-characterized in terms of their sensitivity to other fronto-striatal disorders, and included pattern and spatial recognition memory, attentional set-shifting, and a Go/No-go set-shifting task, planning, and decision-making.

Results. Compared to controls, OCD patients showed selective deficits in pattern recognition memory and slower responding in both pattern and spatial recognition, impaired extra-dimensional shifting on the set-shifting test and impaired reversal of response set on the Go/No-go test. In contrast, TS patients were impaired in spatial recognition memory, extra-dimensional set-shifting, and decision-making. Neither group was impaired in planning. Direct comparisons between the TS and OCD groups revealed significantly different greater deficits for recognition memory latency and Go/No-go reversal for the OCD group, and quality of decision-making for the TS group.

Conclusions. TS and OCD show both differences (recognition memory, decision-making) and similarities (set-shifting) in selective profiles of cognitive function. Specific set-shifting deficits in the OCD group contrasted with their intact performance on other tests of executive function, such as planning and decision-making, and suggested only limited involvement of frontal lobe dysfunction, possibly consistent with OCD symptomatology.

Results from a large-scale, capture—recapture study of humpback whales Megaptera novaeangliae in the North Atlantic show that migration timing is influenced by feeding ground origin. No significant differences were observed in the number of individuals from any feeding area that were re-sighted in the common breeding area in the West Indies. However, there was a relationship between the proportion (logit transformed) of West Indies sightings and longitude (r2=0.97, F1,3=98.27, P=0.0022) suggesting that individuals feeding farther to the east are less likely to winter in the West Indies. A relationship was also detected between sighting date in the West Indies and feeding area. Mean sighting dates in the West Indies for individuals identified in the Gulf of Maine and eastern Canada were significantly earlier than those for animals identified in Greenland, Iceland and Norway (9.97 days, t179=3.53, P=0.00054). There was also evidence for sexual segregation in migration; males were seen earlier on the breeding ground than were females (6.63 days, t105=1.98, P=0.050). This pattern was consistently observed for animals from all feeding areas; a combined model showed a significant effect for both sex (F1=5.942, P=0.017) and feeding area (F3=4.756, P=0.0038). The temporal difference in occupancy of the West Indies between individuals from different feeding areas, coupled with sexual differences in migratory patterns, presents the possibility that there are reduced mating opportunities between individuals from different high latitude areas.

During acclimatization to the hypoxia of altitude, the cerebral circulation is exposed to arterial hypoxia and hypocapnia, two stimuli with opposing influences on cerebral blood flow (CBF). In order to understand the resultant changes in CBF, this study examined the responses of CBF during a period of constant mild hypoxia both with and without concomitant regulation of arterial PCO2. Nine subjects were each exposed to two protocols in a purpose-built chamber: (1) 48 h of isocapnic hypoxia (Protocol I), where end-tidal PO2 (PET,O2) was held at 60 Torr and end-tidal PCO2 (PET,CO2) at the subject's resting value prior to experimentation; and (2) 48 h of poikilocapnic hypoxia (Protocol P), where PET,O2 was held at 60 Torr and PET,CO2 was uncontrolled. Transcranial Doppler ultrasound was used to assess CBF. At 24 h intervals during and after the hypoxic exposure CBF was measured and the sensitivity of CBF to acute variations in PO2 and PCO2 was determined. During Protocol P, PET,CO2 decreased by 13 % (P < 0.001) and CBF decreased by 6 % (P < 0.05), whereas during Protocol I, PET,CO2 and CBF remained unchanged. The sensitivity of CBF to acute variations in PO2 and PCO2 increased by 103 % (P < 0.001) and 28 % (P < 0.01), respectively, over the 48 h period of hypoxia. These changes did not differ between protocols. In conclusion, CBF decreases during mild poikilocapnic hypoxia, indicating that there is a predominant effect on CBF of the associated arterial hypocapnia. This fall occurs despite increases in the sensitivity of CBF to acute variations in PO2/PCO2 arising directly from the hypoxic exposure. Experimental Physiology (2002) 87.5, 633-642.

Reference dielectric function spectra,ε-ε1+ iε2, for strained Si1-x Gex have been generated for 0<x<0.255. Used in an interpolation procedure they allow multilayer analysis of pseudo-dielectric function spectra, <ε <ε1 + i<ε2, measured by spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) on strained Si1-xGex/Si structures of arbitrary composition, x≤0.255. These include multi-quantum well (MQW) structures important for application as infrared detectors.
