We propose a two-sided market entry game and present experiments studying coordination behavior in the game. The two-sided market in the game is operated by an intermediary monopoly platform, serving two sides (i.e., customers and service providers) and featuring asymmetric agents, cross-side network effects, and endogenous market capacity. The game has multiple pure-strategy Nash equilibria if at least one side has a high willingness to enter the market and the other side’s willingness is not very low. We conduct a laboratory experiment involving three treatments corresponding to different combinations of willingness to enter the market among customers and service providers. The experimental results indicate that willingness to enter the market and cross-side network effects significantly influence coordination behavior in two-sided markets. When the multiple pure-strategy Nash equilibria are Pareto ranked on both sides, customers and service providers can coordinate their behavior to the payoff-dominant equilibrium via tacit coordination under strategic uncertainty. However, when the multiple pure-strategy Nash equilibria are Pareto ranked on one side but Pareto equivalent on the other side, coordination failure and disequilibrium occurred, and the equilibria cannot predict the aggregate behavior well. Our experimental results indicate that a thriving two-sided market should coordinate both sides on board.
Noise source identification has been a long-standing challenge for decades. Although it is known that sound sources are closely related to flow structures, the underlying physical mechanisms remain controversial. This study develops a sound source identification method based on longitudinal and transverse process decomposition (LTD). Large-eddy simulations were performed on the flow around a cylinder at a Reynolds number of 3900. Using the new LTD method, sound sources in the cylinder flow were identified, and the mechanisms linking flow structures with noise generation were discussed in detail. Identifying the physical sound sources from two levels, low-order theory and high-order theory, the physical mechanism of wall sound sources was also analysed. Results indicate that the sound sources in the flow field mainly come from the leading edge, shear layer and wake region of the cylinder. The high-order theory reveals that sound sources are correlated with the spatio-temporal evolution of enstrophy, vortex stretching and surface deformation processes, this reflecting the coupling between transversal and longitudinal flow fields. The boundary thermodynamic flux and boundary dilatation flux distribution of the cylinder were analysed. Results indicate that the wall sound sources mainly come from the separation point and have a disorderly distribution on the leeward side of the cylinder, which is the main region where longitudinal variables enter the fluid from the wall surface, and the wall sound source is related to the boundary enstrophy flux.
The interaction of a swimmer with unsteady vortices in complex flows remains a topic of interest and open discussion. The present study, employing the immersed boundary method with a flexible fin model, explores swimming behaviours behind a circular cylinder with vortex-induced vibration (VIV). Five distinct swimming modes are identified on the $U_r$–$G_0$ plane, where $U_r$ denotes the reduced velocity, and $G_0$ represents the fin’s initial position. These modes include drifting upstream I/II (DU-I/II), Karman gait I/II (KG-I/II), and large oscillation (LO), with the DU-II, KG-II and LO modes being newly reported. The fin can either move around or cross through the vortex cores in the KG-I and KG-II modes, respectively, for energy saving and maintaining a stable position. When the upstream cylinder vibrates with its maximum amplitude, a double-row vortex shedding forms in the wake, allowing the DU-II mode to occur with the fin to achieve high-speed locomotion. This is attributed to a significant reduction in the streamwise velocity caused by vortex-induced velocity. Furthermore, a symmetry breaking is observed in the fin’s wake in the DU-II mode, potentially also contributing to high-speed locomotion. Overall, compared to the case without an upstream cylinder, we demonstrate that a self-propelled fin gains hydrodynamic advantages with various swimming modes in different VIV wakes. Interestingly, increased power transferred from flows by the oscillating cylinder leads to a more favourable environment for the downstream fin’s propulsion, indicating that a fin in VIV wakes obtains more advantages compared to the vortex street generated by a stationary cylinder.
Understanding and forecasting mortality by cause is an essential branch of actuarial science, with wide-ranging implications for decision-makers in public policy and industry. To accurately capture trends in cause-specific mortality, it is critical to consider dependencies between causes of death and produce forecasts by age and cause coherent with aggregate mortality forecasts. One way to achieve these aims is to model cause-specific deaths using compositional data analysis (CODA), treating the density of deaths by age and cause as a set of dependent, nonnegative values that sum to one. A major drawback of standard CODA methods is the challenge of zero values, which frequently occur in cause-of-death mortality modeling. Thus, we propose using a compositional power transformation, the $\alpha$-transformation, to model cause-specific life-table death counts. The $\alpha$-transformation offers a statistically rigorous approach to handling zero value subgroups in CODA compared to ad hoc techniques: adding an arbitrarily small amount. We illustrate the $\alpha$-transformation in England and Wales and US death counts by cause from the Human Cause-of-Death database, for cardiovascular-related causes of death. The results demonstrate the $\alpha$-transformation improves forecast accuracy of cause-specific life-table death counts compared with log-ratio-based CODA transformations. The forecasts suggest declines in the proportions of deaths from major cardiovascular causes (myocardial infarction and other ischemic heart diseases).
Coccidiosis is a parasitic disease caused by Eimeria spp., and the emergence of drug resistance has seriously affected the control of the disease. Using RNA-seq, we previously found that phosphoglycerate kinase of Eimeria tenella (EtPGK) was differentially downregulated in diclazuril-resistant (DZR) and maduramicin-resistant (MRR) strains compared with drug-sensitive (DS) strain. In this study, we further analysed the characteristics and functions of EtPGK to find the possible mechanism of drug resistance of E. tenella. Quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) and western blot found that EtPGK was highly expressed in sporulated oocysts, followed by sporozoites and second-generation merozoites of E. tenella. Indirect immunofluorescence localization showed that EtPGK was located mainly in the cytoplasm and on the surface of the parasites. Invasion inhibition assays showed that anti-rEtPGK antibody significantly inhibited the invasion of parasites. Further studies using qRT-PCR and western blot found that the transcription and translation levels of EtPGK were downregulated in both resistant (DZR and MRR) strains compared with the DS strain, and the transcription level correlated negatively with the drug concentration. The enzyme activity assay revealed that EtPGK enzyme activity was decreased in the DZR strain compared with the DS strain. qRT-PCR revealed that the mRNA transcription level of EtPGK was significantly downregulated in the field DZR strain and salinomycin-resistant strain compared with the DS strain. These results suggested that EtPGK has other important roles that are separate and distinct from its function in glycolysis, and it might be involved in the development of drug resistance of E. tenella.
This paper retrospectively analysed the prevalence of macrolide-resistant Mycoplasma pneumoniae (MRMP) in some parts of China. Between January 2013 and December 2019, we collected 4,145 respiratory samples, including pharyngeal swabs and alveolar lavage fluid. The highest PCR-positive rate of M. pneumoniae was 74.5% in Beijing, the highest resistance rate was 100% in Shanghai, and Gansu was the lowest with 20%. The highest PCR-positive rate of M. pneumoniae was 74.5% in 2013, and the highest MRMP was 97.4% in 2019; the PCR-positive rate of M. pneumoniae for adults in Beijing was 17.9% and the MRMP was 10.48%. Among the children diagnosed with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), the PCR-positive and macrolide-resistant rates of M. pneumoniae were both higher in the severe ones. A2063G in domain V of 23S rRNA was the major macrolide-resistant mutation, accounting for more than 90%. The MIC values of all MRMP to erythromycin and azithromycin were ≥ 64 μg/ml, and the MICs of tetracycline and levofloxacin were ≤ 0.5 μg/ml and ≤ 1 μg/ml, respectively. The macrolide resistance varied in different regions and years. Among inpatients, the macrolide-resistant rate was higher in severe pneumonia. A2063G was the common mutation, and we found no resistance to tetracycline and levofloxacin.
Aiming at the problems of small good workspace, many singular configurations, and limited carrying capacity of non-redundant parallel mechanisms, a full-redundant drive parallel mechanism is designed and developed, and its performance evaluation, good workspace identification, and scale optimization design are studied. First, the kinematics analysis of the planar 6R parallel mechanism is completed. Then, the motion/force transmission performance evaluation index of the mechanism is established, and the singularity analysis of the mechanism is completed. Based on this, the fully redundant driving mode of the mechanism is determined, and the good transmission workspace of the mechanism in this mode is identified. Then, the mapping relationship between the performance and scale of the mechanism is established by using the space model theory, and the scale optimization of the mechanism is completed. Finally, the robot prototype is made according to the optimal scale, and the performance verification is carried out based on the research of dynamics and control strategy. The results show that the fully redundant actuation parallel mechanism obtained by design optimization has high precision and large bearing capacity. The position repeatability and position accuracy are 0.053 mm and 0.635 mm, respectively, and the load weight ratio can reach 15.83%. The research results of this paper complement and improve the performance evaluation and scale optimization system of redundantly actuated parallel mechanisms.
Motoric cognitive risk syndrome (MCR), which is defined as a pre-dementia syndrome characterized by subjective cognitive complaints and slow gait in older individuals free of dementia and mobility disability, has been associated with increased risks of dementia, functional dependence, and mortality. The aims of this study were to describe the prevalence and distribution of MCR and to explore the clinical profiles associated with MCR in rural-dwelling older adults.
Methods:
The population-based cross-sectional study included 5,021 dementia- and disability-free participants (age ≥60 years; 56.48% women) in the baseline assessments (March-September 2018) of the Multimodal Interventions to delay Dementia and disability in rural China (MIND-China). The MCR syndrome was diagnosed when the participants had subjective memory complaints and gait speed ≥1 standard deviation (SD) below the age- (<75 and ≥75 years) and sex-specific means. We estimated the age- and sex-specific prevalence of MCR. We used logistic regression models to examine lifestyle and clinical factors associated with MCR while controlling for age, sex, and education.
Results:
The overall prevalence of MCR syndrome was 13.58%, with the prevalence being 11.53% in males and 15.16% in females (P<0.001). The prevalence of MCR was increased with age, from 10.43% in people aged 60-69 years and 15.97% in those aged 70-79 years to 21.71% among those aged ≥80 years. The demographic-adjusted odds ratio (95% confidence interval) of MCR was 1.30 (1.08-1.57) for being overweight (body mass index 24-27.9 vs. <24 kg/m2), 1.65 (1.32-2.05) for having obesity (≥28 kg/m2), 1.74 (1.41-2.15) for diabetes, 1.44 (1.20-1.73) for dyslipidemia, 1.59 (1.32-1.91) for having coronary heart disease, 2.17 (1.78-2.65) for having stroke history, 1.52 (1.24-1.86) for having osteoarthritis, and 3.40 (2.70-4.28) for having depressive symptoms. Ever (vs. never) smoking and alcohol consumption were related to odds ratio of 0.65 (0.48-0.86) and 0.71 (0.55-0.91), respectively, for MCR syndrome.
Conclusion:
The MCR syndrome affects nearly 1 in 7 Chinese rural older adults, and the MCR prevalence appears to be higher in women than in men. Cardiometabolic risk factors (e.g., overweight/obesity, diabetes, and dyslipidemia), osteoarthritis, coronary heart disease, stroke, and depressive symptoms were associated with increased likelihoods of the MCR syndrome.
Childhood maltreatment is an established risk factor for psychopathology. However, it remains unclear how childhood traumatic events relate to mental health problems and how the brain is involved. This study examined the serial mediation effect of brain morphological alterations and emotion-/reward-related functions on linking the relationship from maltreatment to depression. We recruited 156 healthy adolescents and young adults and an additional sample of 31 adolescents with major depressive disorder for assessment of childhood maltreatment, depressive symptoms, cognitive reappraisal and anticipatory/consummatory pleasure. Structural MRI data were acquired to identify maltreatment-related cortical and subcortical morphological differences. The mediation models suggested that emotional maltreatment of abuse and neglect, was respectively associated with increased gray matter volume in the ventral striatum and greater thickness in the middle cingulate cortex. These structural alterations were further related to reduced anticipatory pleasure and disrupted cognitive reappraisal, which contributed to more severe depressive symptoms among healthy individuals. The above mediating effects were not replicated in our clinical group partly due to the small sample size. Preventative interventions can target emotional and reward systems to foster resilience and reduce the likelihood of future psychiatric disorders among individuals with a history of maltreatment.
Differences in the properties of clay minerals cause formation damage under the condition of thermal production in heavy-oil reservoirs; asphaltenes adsorbed on clay minerals exacerbate the formation damage. The purpose of the present study was to reveal the variation in clay minerals and the adsorption behavior of asphaltenes on clay mineral surfaces under thermal recovery conditions. Volume changes and transformations of typical clay minerals were studied under various conditions (80 and 180°C, pH 9 and 11, aqueous and oven-dry conditions). On this basis, the adsorption behavior and mechanism of asphaltenes on the surfaces of clay minerals in various simulated conditions were investigated. The adsorption mechanism was revealed using kinetics and isothermal adsorption models. The results showed that the volume of montmorillonite expanded by up to 159.13% after water–rock interaction at 180°C with pH 11; meanwhile, the conversion rates of kaolinite and illite to montmorillonite were 6.6 and 7.8%, respectively. The water–rock interaction intensified the volume changes and transformations of clay minerals under thermal conditions. The amounts of asphaltene adsorbed on clay minerals at 180°C were greater than those at 80°C. The adsorption process of asphaltenes was inhibited under aqueous conditions. The abilities of the constituent minerals to bind asphaltenes was in order: montmorillonite > chlorite > kaolinite > illite > quartz sand. The adsorption process of asphaltenes yielded high coefficients of regression with both the Freundlich and Langmuir models under oven-dry (>0.99) and aqueous (>0.98) conditions. At 180°C under aqueous conditions, the water film significantly inhibited the adsorption of asphaltene on the clay minerals. The adsorption process of asphaltenes, therefore, could be regarded as the adsorption occurring at lower concentrations under oven-dry conditions.
Behavioral addiction (BA) and substance use disorder (SUD) share similarities and differences in clinical symptoms, cognitive functions, and behavioral attributes. However, little is known about whether and how functional networks in the human brain manifest commonalities and differences between BA and SUD. Voxel-wise meta-analyses of resting-state functional connectivity (rs-FC) were conducted in BA and SUD separately, followed by quantitative conjunction analyses to identify the common and distinct alterations across both the BA and SUD groups. A total of 92 datasets with 2444 addicted patients and 2712 healthy controls (HCs) were eligible for the meta-analysis. Our findings demonstrated that BA and SUD exhibited common alterations in rs-FC between frontoparietal network (FPN) and other high-level neurocognitive networks (i.e. default mode network (DMN), affective network (AN), and salience network (SN)) as well as hyperconnectivity between SN seeds and the Rolandic operculum in SSN. In addition, compared with BA, SUD exhibited several distinct within- and between-network rs-FC alterations mainly involved in the DMN and FPN. Further, altered within- and between-network rs-FC showed significant association with clinical characteristics such as the severity of addiction in BA and duration of substance usage in SUD. The common rs-FC alterations in BA and SUD exhibited the relationship with consistent aberrant behaviors in both addiction groups, such as impaired inhibition control and salience attribution. By contrast, the distinct rs-FC alterations might suggest specific substance effects on the brain neural transmitter systems in SUD.
Segmenting dark-field images of laser-induced damage on large-aperture optics in high-power laser facilities is challenged by complicated damage morphology, uneven illumination and stray light interference. Fully supervised semantic segmentation algorithms have achieved state-of-the-art performance but rely on a large number of pixel-level labels, which are time-consuming and labor-consuming to produce. LayerCAM, an advanced weakly supervised semantic segmentation algorithm, can generate pixel-accurate results using only image-level labels, but its scattered and partially underactivated class activation regions degrade segmentation performance. In this paper, we propose a weakly supervised semantic segmentation method, continuous gradient class activation mapping (CAM) and its nonlinear multiscale fusion (continuous gradient fusion CAM). The method redesigns backpropagating gradients and nonlinearly activates multiscale fused heatmaps to generate more fine-grained class activation maps with an appropriate activation degree for different damage site sizes. Experiments on our dataset show that the proposed method can achieve segmentation performance comparable to that of fully supervised algorithms.
Attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is related to depressive disorder, and adolescents with both present poor outcomes. However, evidence for the safety of concomitantly using a methylphenidate (MPH) and a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) among adolescent ADHD patients is limited, a literature gap aimed to address through this investigation.
Methods
We conducted a new-user cohort study using a nationwide claims database in South Korea. We identified a study population as adolescents who were diagnosed both ADHD and depressive disorder. MPH-only users were compared with patients who prescribed both a SSRI and a MPH. Fluoxetine and escitalopram users were also compared to find a preferable treatment option. Thirteen outcomes including neuropsychiatric, gastrointestinal, and other events were assessed, taking respiratory tract infection as a negative control outcome. We matched the study groups using a propensity score and used the Cox proportional hazard model to calculate the hazard ratio. Subgroup and sensitivity analyses were conducted in various epidemiologic settings.
Results
The risks of all the outcomes between the MPH-only and SSRI groups were not significantly different. Regarding SSRI ingredients, the risk of tic disorder was significantly lower in the fluoxetine group than the escitalopram group [HR 0.43 (0.25–0.71)]. However, there was no significant difference in other outcomes between the fluoxetine and escitalopram groups.
Conclusion
The concomitant use of MPHs and SSRIs showed generally safe profiles in adolescent ADHD patients with depression. Most of the differences between fluoxetine and escitalopram, except those concerning tic disorder, were not significant.
This study compares the detection rates of haemoglobin absorption spectral imaging and white light imaging in laryngeal papilloma surgery.
Methods
Seventeen patients with laryngeal papilloma who underwent surgery in our department from September 2019 to September 2021 were selected. All patients underwent carbon dioxide laser surgery under a microscope. The lesion sites were explored in white light mode and haemoglobin absorption spectral imaging mode. The pharynx and larynx anatomical sites were evaluated using Derkay's all-position scoring system. The numbers and scores for lesions observed in the two modes were compared.
Results
In 17 cases, there were statistically significant differences in the numbers of laryngeal papillomas (Derkay score) detected by white light mode and haemoglobin absorption spectral imaging mode. In 9 of 17 patients (52.94 per cent), the haemoglobin absorption spectral imaging mode showed additional diseased tissues.
Conclusion
The haemoglobin absorption spectral imaging mode can dynamically identify diseased tissues in carbon dioxide laser surgery under a microscope and improve the laryngeal papilloma detection rate.
Body weight variability (BWV) negatively affects the incidence and outcomes of various diseases, but the nature of the association between BWV and depression remains unclear. In this study, we aimed to test the hypothesis that BWV is associated with the risk of new-onset depression.
Methods
Data from a nationwide population-based cohort in the Korean National Health Insurance Service database were analyzed for 6 598 570 adults with no history of depression and reports of at least three health examinations. BWV was estimated using variability independent of the mean indices and divided into quartiles (Q1 lowest, Q4 highest BWV). Cox proportional hazard models were applied to assess the risk of depression according to the quartile of BWV.
Results
The incident rate for depression from Q1 to Q4 of BWV was 20.7, 20.3, 20.8, and 22.2 per 1000 person-years, respectively. BWV, especially high BWV, was associated with an increased risk of depression after adjusting for age, sex, smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity, income, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. The hazard ratio (HR) of new-onset depression was highest in Q4 relative to Q1 in the total population (HR 1.12, p < 0.0001) and was higher in women than in men (HR 1.72 v. 1.16, p < 0.0001). In stratified analyses, regardless of obesity or weight change status at baseline, the risk of depression was increased when bodyweight fluctuated highly during follow-up.
Conclusions
High BWV was associated with an increased risk of depression. Further studies need to evaluate the role of high BWV with respect to the onset of depression.
There are growing concerns about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of older adults. We examined the effect of the pandemic on the risk of depression in older adults.
Methods
We analyzed data from the prospective cohort study of Korean older adults, which has been followed every 2 years. Among the 2308 participants who completed both the third and the fourth follow-up assessments, 58.4% completed their fourth follow-up before the outbreak of COVID-19 and the rest completed it during the pandemic. We conducted face-to-face diagnostic interviews using Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview and used Geriatric Depression Scale. We performed generalized estimating equations and logistic regression analyses.
Results
The COVID-19 pandemic was associated with increased depressive symptoms in older adults [b (standard error) = 0.42 (0.20), p = 0.040] and a doubling of the risk for incident depressive disorder even in euthymic older adults without a history of depression (odds ratio = 2.44, 95% confidence interval 1.18–5.02, p = 0.016). Less social activities, which was associated with the risk of depressive disorder before the pandemic, was not associated with the risk of depressive disorder during the pandemic. However, less family gatherings, which was not associated with the risk of depressive disorder before the pandemic, was associated with the doubled risk of depressive disorder during the pandemic.
Conclusions
The COVID-19 pandemic significantly influences the risk of late-life depression in the community. Older adults with a lack of family gatherings may be particularly vulnerable.
