Haemosporidian genera Plasmodium, Haemoproteus and Leucocytozoon, responsible for avian malarial infections, are highly diverse and have a wide range of health effects and predictors, depending on the host and its environmental context. Here, we present, for the first time, detailed information on the identity, prevalence and parasitaemia of haemosporidians and other haemoparasites that infect the ash-breasted Sierra finch, Geospizopsis plebejus, in an Andean dry forest. We study the consequences of infection in the host body and health conditions and explore the environmental and intrinsic factors that influence infection status and parasitaemia. We conducted diagnoses by cytochrome b (cytb) sequencing and morphological identification, and estimated the levels of parasitaemia based on microscopy. We identified 6 cytb lineages infecting G. plebejus. Two of them were new lineages: Haemoproteus sp. GEPLE01 and GEPLE02. We also detected Haemoproteus sp. ZOCAP08, Haemoproteus sp. AMAVIR01, Plasmodium homopolare BAEBIC02 and Plasmodium cathemerium ZONCAP15. By microscopy, we detected Haemoproteus coatneyi, Haemoproteus erythrogravidus, P. homopolare and other unidentified species of Haemoproteus, Plasmodium, Babesia sp. and 1 microfilaria. We found no evidence of Leucocytozoon. Additionally, we detected several coinfections by sequencing and microscopy. The prevalence of haemosporidian infections was high (87.7%), and the mean parasitaemia was 61.65 infected cells per 10 000 erythrocytes examined. Prevalence and parasitaemia were higher for Haemoproteus than for Plasmodium. Haemoproteus sp. AMAVIR01 showed the highest prevalence (43.1%) and mean parasitaemia (94.39/10 000 erythrocytes) and might be associated with H. coatneyi. Immature individuals showed a lower prevalence than adults, supporting previous findings.

The occurrence and impact of contaminants of emerging concerns (CECs) have been investigated in Antarctica much less than in other parts of the world. Although legacy anthropogenic pollutants can reach Antarctica via long-range transport, CECs mainly originate from local sources. Here, we investigated the ability of a freshwater crustacean, the Antarctic fairy shrimp Branchinecta gaini, to cope with nanoscale titanium dioxide (n-TiO2), a widely used pigment in consumer products (e.g. paintings), including those for personal care (e.g. sunscreens). An in vivo acute short-term exposure study (9 h, n-TiO2 concentration range 50–200 μg ml-1) was performed and the expression levels of several genes involved in stress response were evaluated. No effect on the expression of heat-shock protein chaperone genes was found, with the exception of Hsp70a, which was significantly upregulated at 200 μg ml-1 n-TiO2. Similarly, cytochrome P450 was upregulated at 100 and 200 μg ml-1 n-TiO2, while the expression levels of cathepsin L and of antioxidant genes such as superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase were significantly reduced with increasing concentrations of n-TiO2. This study shows for the first time the responsiveness and sensitivity of an Antarctic freshwater crustacean to n-TiO2 exposure and supports its suitability as a biomonitor of CECs in Antarctica.

Cuba is a paradigmatic case where the term and concept of the peasantry remains of lived importance. Cuban peasants had a significant role in the past as they did return to the political agenda after the Revolution with particular emphasis under Raul Castro’s administration. However, the Cuban case has not been significantly explored from a long-term perspective that connects the old debates and dimensions of land reforms under developmentalist states to the new agrarian questions in the global era. Based on secondary sources, semi-structured interviews and updated data on land structures, this article explores the long-term process of land reform in Cuba.

Background:Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI), caused by toxigenic C. difficile and predominately manifested by moderate-to-severe diarrhea, is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in long-term care facilities (LTCFs). However, for CDI to be diagnosed in an LTCF resident, an LTCF resident with diarrhea must have a stool specimen collected for CDI diagnostic testing. The objective of this study was to define the frequency of stool specimen collection and testing for CDI in adult LTCF residents with diarrhea in Louisville, Kentucky. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 14 (31%) of the 45 LTCFs in Louisville (adults aged ≥18 years; population, 599,276) to identify LTCF residents with diarrhea and to observe the frequency of stool specimen collection for CDI diagnosis. For 14 consecutive days in February 2019, each LTCF was visited to identify new onset diarrhea (≥3 loose stools in 24 hours) by interviews of nursing staff. For residents with diarrhea, staff reviewed electronic medical records to determine whether a stool specimen was collected for CDI diagnosis and interviewed nurses about potential noninfectious causes of diarrhea. Results: The 14 participating LTCFs have 1,208 beds (median, 86 beds and 43 occupied beds per participating LTCF). Among 743 LTCF residents (with 10,402 patient days of surveillance), new-onset diarrhea was identified in 63 residents (21% male; median age 75 years); 0.6 diarrhea cases per 100 patient days (diarrhea attack rate, 0.6% per day). Nurses indicated that 16 (25%) of the 63 residents with diarrhea had a potential noninfectious cause of diarrhea (11 laxatives, 3 feeding tube, 1 colostomy, and 1 gastric surgery). Stool specimens were collected for CDI testing from 20 of 63 of residents (32%) with diarrhea; none with potential noninfectious cause of diarrhea and from 20 of 47 other residents (42%) with diarrhea. Of 20 stool specimens tested, 9 (47%) yielded toxigenic C. difficile (8.6 CDI cases per 10,000 patient days). During this survey, none of the 63 LTCF residents with diarrhea were transferred to a hospital or other healthcare facility. Conclusions: Diarrhea was common among LTCF residents, and toxigenic C. difficile was frequently identified in stool specimens collected from LTCF residents with diarrhea. The majority of non–laxative-receiving LTCF residents with diarrhea did not have a stool specimen collected for CDI diagnosis. The low frequency of CDI diagnostic testing of LTCF residents with diarrhea indicates that CDI may be underdiagnosed in these LTCFs and suggests that the CDI disease burden may be larger than currently appreciated.

Background: Although Clostridioides difficile infections (CDIs) are associated with significant morbidity and mortality, CDI disease burden may be underestimated if a high proportion of inpatients with diarrhea do not have stool specimens collected for CDI diagnostic testing. The objective of this study was to define the frequency of stool specimen collection and testing for CDI in adult hospitalized patients with diarrhea. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in all 9 adult hospitals (total, 3,532 beds) in Louisville (adult aged ≥18 years; population 599,276) to identify patients with diarrhea and to observe the frequency of stool specimen collection for CDI diagnosis. For 7 consecutive days in December 2018, each ward was visited to identify new onset diarrhea (>3 loose stools in 24 hours) among Louisville adults: first via electronic medical record (EMR) review, then by nurse interviews, and finally by interviewing patients. For patients with diarrhea, research staff reviewed EMRs to determine whether a stool specimen was collected for CDI diagnosis, and they interviewed nurses about potential noninfectious causes of diarrhea. Results: Among 2,565 hospitalized adults (with 14,042 patient days), research staff identified 167 patients (47% men; median age, 64 years) with new onset diarrhea, 1.2 diarrhea cases per 100 patient days. Patients with diarrhea were initially ascertained by EMR review (50%), nurse interviews (42%) or patient interviews (8%); all cases identified by patient interviews were identified by nurses the following day (but many cases identified by nurses were never identified by EMR review). Nurses indicated that 67 cases had a potential noninfectious cause of diarrhea (eg, laxatives, feeding tube, colostomy, liquid diet, etc). Stool specimens were collected by hospital staff for CDI testing from 53 of 167 patients (32%) with diarrhea; 10 of 67 patients (15%) with diarrhea for whom nurses reported potential noninfectious causes of diarrhea (laxative use, enteric feeding, or gastric survey) in the past 24 hours; and 43 of 100 patients (43%) with diarrhea with no reported potential noninfectious causes of diarrhea. Stool collection frequency was similar on weekdays and weekends. Conclusions: The low frequency of CDI diagnostic testing of hospitalized patients with diarrhea indicates that CDI may be underdiagnosed in these hospitals and suggests, given that only 32% of patients with diarrhea had a stool specimen collected, that the CDI disease burden may be 3 times larger than currently appreciated. New-onset diarrhea occurred in >1% of patients each day; the most effective method for identifying patients with diarrhea was via nurse interviews.

Objective: We investigated the epidemiology of Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) in long-term care facility (LTCF) patients admitted to a tertiary-care center in Detroit. Methods: A retrospective case-control study was conducted of LTCF residents who were hospitalized with CDI at the Detroit Medical Center between January 1, 2009, and December 31, 2016. Case patients (LTCF residents admitted with CDI) were compared to 2 sets of inpatient controls. The first set of controls included inpatients presenting from the same LTCFs without CDI (control A). Second set included inpatients admitted from non-LTCF (home, community, hospital) who acquired CDI > 48 hours after admission or those who acquired CDI within 48 hours of admission but were exposed to an acute-care hospital within 4 weeks prior to admission (control B). Cases were matched (1:3 ratio) to the 2 sets of controls (control A and control B) based on year of admission. Matched multivariable analyses using conditional logistic regression were performed to identify independent predictors of CDI. Results: In total, 85 cases were matched to 2 sets of controls. For the first multivariate logistic regression model performed on cases and control A (n1 = 255), significant risk factors identified included tube feeding (OR, 3.60; 95% CI, 1.43–9.02; P = .006) and albumin ≤2.5 g/dL (OR, 4.98; 95% CI, 2.02–12.31; P < .001). For the second multivariate logistic regression model performed on cases and control B (n2 = 255), significant risk factors identified included Charlson comorbidity index score (OR, 1.25; 95% CI, 1.12–1.40; P < .001), tube feeding (OR, 3.63; 95% CI, 1.81–7.25; P < .001), prior use of PPI (OR, 0.37; 95% CI, 0.20–0.68; P = .001), prior use of H2 blockers (OR, 0.34; 95% CI, 0.16–0.69; P = .003), and prior use of antibiotics (OR, 0.12; 95% CI, 0.06–0.24; P < .001). Cases were more likely to have complicated CDI (OR, 7.02; P < .001) and recurrent CDI (OR, 2.63; P =.02) when compared to control B. Conclusions: Patients who acquired CDI at LTCFs experienced more severe CDI and were at greater risk for recurrent CDI than patients with other healthcare-associated CDI. For the regression model performed on cases and control A as well as that performed on cases and control B, tube feeding was the only variable that consistently predicted CDI among LTCF patients.

In this work, a new method to determine and correct the linear drift for any crystalline orientation in a single-column-resolved high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (HR-STEM) image, which is based on angle measurements in the Fourier space, is presented. This proposal supposes a generalization and the improvement of a previous work that needs the presence of two symmetrical planes in the crystalline orientation to be applicable. Now, a mathematical derivation of the drift effect on two families of asymmetric planes in the reciprocal space is inferred. However, though it was not possible to find an analytical solution for all conditions, a simple formula was derived to calculate the drift effect that is exact for three specific rotation angles. Taking this into account, an iterative algorithm based on successive rotation/drift correction steps is devised to remove drift distortions in HR-STEM images. The procedure has been evaluated using a simulated micrograph of a monoclinic material in an orientation where all the reciprocal lattice vectors are different. The algorithm only needs four iterations to resolve a 15° drift angle in the image.

This study examined (1) the association of dietary energy density from solid (EDS) and solid plus liquids (EDSL) with adiposity and cardiometabolic risk factors (CRF) in children with overweight and obesity, (2) the effect of under-reporting on the mentioned associations and (3) whether the association between ED and body composition and CRF is influenced by levels of physical activity. In a cross-sectional design, 208 overweight and obese children (8–12-year-old; 111 boys) completed two non-consecutive 24 h recalls. ED was calculated using two different approaches: EDS and EDSL. Under-reporters were determined with the Goldberg method. Body composition, anthropometry and fasting blood sample measurements were performed. Moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) was registered with accelerometers (7-d-register). Linear regressions were performed to evaluate the association of ED with the previously mentioned variables. Neither EDS nor EDSL were associated with body composition or CRF. However, when under-reporters were excluded, EDS was positively associated with BMI (P=0·019), body fat percentage (P=0·005), abdominal fat (P=0·008) and fat mass index (P=0·018), while EDSL was positively associated with body fat percentage (P=0·008) and fat mass index (P=0·026). When stratifying the group according to physical activity recommendations, the aforementioned associations were only maintained for non-compliers. Cluster analysis showed that the low-ED and high-MVPA group presented the healthiest profile for all adiposity and CRF. These findings could partly explain inconsistencies in literature, as we found that different ED calculations entail distinct results. Physical activity levels and excluding under-reporters greatly influence the associations between ED and adiposity in children with overweight and obesity.

This paper describes the development of an L-Band (f0 = 1.575 GHz) high power and efficient solid state power amplifier (SSPA) designed for the European satellite navigation system (i.e. Galileo). The amplifier, developed in the framework of the European Project named SLOGAN, exploits the GH50-10 GaN technology available at United Monolithic Semiconductor foundry. The aim of the project is to offer, using as much as possible European technologies, a valid alternative to replace traveling wave tube amplifiers with more compact and reliable systems. All the SSPA functionalities, i.e. power supply, power conditioning and radio frequency amplification, are integrated in the developed architecture and accommodated in a single box with limited volume and mass. The required output power level is achieved by parallelizing several GaN die power bars of 12 and/or 25.6 mm. In continuous wave operating mode, the overall SSPA delivers an output power higher than 250 W at less than 2 dB of gain compression in the whole E1-band. Moreover, the registered gain and efficiency are higher than 67 dB and 54%, respectively.

Between the 1930s and 1960s Puerto Rico was transformed from a marginal United States territory into an industrialised ‘showcase of development’. This article investigates the organisation of milk station programmes on the island during this crucial period and how these reflected the circulation of child welfare knowledge, nutrition expertise and public health practices. During the Depression, these perspectives fostered a recast of the eugenic regeneration ideologies motivating medical assessments of and sanitary interventions with Puerto Rico’s rural poor since the nineteenth century. Innovations in nutrition knowledge and an emerging rural hygiene movement highlighted the negative health effects of the island’s monocrops economy. In this context, the nourishment of children’s bodies assumed symbolic and instrumental significance for the reconfiguration of colonial and developmental models promoted by the new Popular Democratic Party (PPD). The experience of public health professionals in relief work during the 1930s contributed to the articulation of food and nutrition as key elements of this party’s populist discourse. Programmes like milk stations became part of strategies to rear and manage the labour force needed in the industrial development model promoted by the PPD. From the perspective of poor Puerto Ricans, however, they were part of the materialisation of its promise of social justice for the poorer classes.

A very high energy (VHE) γ-radiation was detected from a flat spectrum radio quasar (FSRQ) 4C 21.35 (PKS1222+21) by MAGIC (Major Atmospheric Gamma Imaging Cherenkov) telescopes on June 17th 2010. 4C 21.35 is only the 3rd FSRQ detected in VHE γ-rays. With its hard spectrum (Γ = 2.72±0.34) with no apparent cut-off at energies below 130 GeV and an extremely fast variation of flux (doubling in 8.6+1.1−0.9 minutes), this detection poses a challenge to existing models of VHE γ-radiation from FSRQs. The most important results of observations performed by MAGIC telescopes are presented here, as well as some possible explanations of those results.

Theoretical studies suggest that C/O and Mg/Si are the most important elemental ratios in determining the mineralogy of terrestrial planets. The C/O ratio controls the distribution of Si among carbide and oxide species, while Mg/Si gives information about the silicate mineralogy. We find mineralogical ratios quite different from those of the Sun, showing that there is a wide variety of planetary systems which are not similar to Solar System. Many of planetary host stars present a Mg/Si value lower than 1, so their planets will have a high Si content to form species such as MgSiO3. This type of composition can have important implications for planetary processes like plate tectonics, atmospheric composition or volcanism. Moreover, the information given by these ratios can guide us in the search of stars more probable to form terrestrial planets.

We have analysed very high-quality HARPS and UVES spectra of 95 solar analogs, 24 hosting planets and 71 without detected planets, to search for any possible signature of terrestial planets in the chemical abundances of volatile and refractory elements with respect to the solar abundances.

We demonstrate that stars with and without planets in this sample show similar mean abundance ratios, in particular, a sub-sample of 14 planet-host and 14 “single” solar analogs in the metallicity range 0.14 < [Fe/H] < 0.36. In addition, two of the planetary systems in this sub-sample, containing each of them a super-Earth-like planet with masses in the range ~ 7-11 Earth masses, have different volatile-to-refratory abundance ratios to what would be expected from the presence of a terrestial planets.

Finally, we check that after removing the Galactic chemical evolution effects any possible difference in mean abundances, with respect to solar values, of refratory and volatile elements practically dissappears.
