  • On the status of NCIs: An experimental investigation on so-called Strict NC languages

  • This paper investigates the status of Negative Concord Items (NCIs) in three so-called Strict Negative Concord (NC) languages (namely, Greek, Romanian, and Russian). An experimental study was designed to gather evidence concerning the speakers’ acceptability and interpretation of sequences with argumental NCIs in subject, object, and both positions when dhen/nu/ne were not present. Our results show that NCIs are negative indefinites whose presence in a clausal domain is enough to assign a single negation reading to the whole sequence, thus arguing in support of the hypothesis that in NC structures the minimal semantic requirement to convey single negation is that one or more NCIs encoding a negative feature appear within a sentential domain. We argue that in these structures dhen/nu/ne are the instantiations of a negative feature [neg] disembodied from an indefinite negative NCI in order to obey a syntax–phonology interface constraint.

  • Summary

    The aim of the chapter is to first discuss the theoretical motivations for Full Transfer as well as some methodological considerations one needs to adopt when testing whether there is Full or property-by-property transfer in L3/Ln acquisition. The chapter then provides an overview of two clusters of studies providing some empirical evidence towards Full Transfer at the initial stages of L3/Ln acquisition. The first cluster of studies examined is that of the acquisition of Brazilian Portuguese by bilingual English–Spanish speakers, illustrating how bringing together these 16 studies can be helpful when evaluating the tenets of the theoretical proposals that predict Full Transfer. The second is that of Catalan–Spanish bilinguals acquiring L3 English. By reviewing these seven different studies, it is shown how Full Transfer applies in cases where structural similarity between the Lx/Ly and L3 is not straightforward. The chapter ends by suggesting some directions for future research.

  • Summary

    In this chapter, we aim to summarize the range of work that has been and continues to be conducted on multilingual populations from various theoretical paradigms and/or distinct subareas of theoretical and applied linguistics. Any attempt to be exhaustive in this regard would be doomed from the start, as space – and likely the attention of the reader – would surely be an obstacle. Moreover, and of equal importance, doing so would distract us from the main goal of this book, which is to understand the dynamic nature of representational morphosyntactic transfer in adult multilingualism and the manifold theoretical implications that derive from revealing this. That being said, it is important to understand the larger context in which our choice of focus is situated and thus appreciate the piece of the larger puzzle that it is. Therefore, this chapter serves to provide a cursory snapshot of the puzzle itself.
