Evolution models of planetary systems find that resonant chains of planets often arise from the formation within protoplanetary disks. However, the occurrence of observed resonant chains, such as the notable TRAPPIST-1 system, is relatively low. This suggests that the majority of these chains become destabilized after the dissipation of the protoplanetary disk. Stellar tides, especially the wavelike dynamical tide, could be proposed as potential contributors to the destabilization of resonant chains. The dissipation of the dynamical tide, because of the frequency-dependant tidal excitation of stellar oscillation eigenmodes, potentially leads to a boost in migration for the close-in planets and disrupts the fragile stability of resonant chains. Thus, we investigate the influence of the stellar dynamical tide on multi-planet systems with taking their dissipation into account in the N-body code Posidonius. Notably, this research represents the first exploration of the impact of frequency-dependent dynamical tides on multi-planet systems.

The distribution of hot Jupiters, for which star-planet interactions can be significant, questions the evolution of exosystems. We aim to follow the orbital evolution of a planet along the rotational and structural evolution of the host star by taking into account the coupled effects of tidal and magnetic torques from ab initio prescriptions. It allows us to better understand the evolution of star-planet systems and to explain some properties of the distribution of observed close-in planets. To this end we use a numerical model of a coplanar circular star-planet system taking into account stellar structural changes, wind braking and star-planet interactions, called ESPEM (Benbakoura et al. (2019)). We find that depending on the initial configuration of the system, magnetic effects can dominate tidal effects during the various phases of the evolution, leading to an important migration of the planet and to significant changes on the rotational evolution of the star. Both kinds of interactions thus have to be taken into account to predict the evolution of compact star-planet systems.

The astrophysics community uses different tools for computational tasks such as complex systems simulations, radiative transfer calculations or big data. Programming languages like Fortran, C or C++ are commonly present in these tools and, generally, the language choice was made based on the need for performance. However, this comes at a cost: safety. For instance, a common source of error is the access to invalid memory regions, which produces random execution behaviors and affects the scientific interpretation of the results.

In 2015, Mozilla Research released the first stable version of a new programming language named Rust. Many features make this new language attractive for the scientific community, it is open source and it guarantees memory safety while offering zero-cost abstraction.

We explore the advantages and drawbacks of Rust for astrophysics by re-implementing the fundamental parts of Mercury-T, a Fortran code that simulates the dynamical and tidal evolution of multi-planet systems.

A large number of observed exoplanets are part of multiple planet systems. Most of these systems are sufficiently close-in to be tidally evolving. In such systems, there is a competition between the excitation caused by planet-planet interactions and tidal damping. Using as an example two multiple planet systems, which host planets in the surface liquid water habitable zone (HZ): Kepler-62 and Kepler-186, we show the importance and effect of both planetary and stellar tides on the dynamical evolution of planets and on the climate of the HZ planets.
