The gender† dimension of science and technology has become one of the most important and debated issues worldwide, impacting society at every level. A variety of international initiatives on the subject have been undertaken, including the continued monitoring of the status of women in science by Unesco Institute for Statistics (UIS) or the annual reports “Education at a Glance” by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) as well as field-related working groups and networking in order to collect data in a consistent manner. The majority of the international organizations have made clear statements about their discrimination policies (independently of their main field(s) of action), including the International Council for Science whose regulations are followed by the IAU. Gender equality at large is one of the eight United Nations Millennium Development Goals, which clearly calls for action related to science, technology and gender.

A spectroscopic study comparing the [Na/Fe] distributions of RGB and AGB stars in the Galactic globular cluster (GC) NGC 6752 found that there was no Na-rich, 2nd-generation star along the early-AGB of this cluster. This came as a surprise since in this GC, as well as other Galactic GCs studied so far, 1st- and 2nd-generation stars have usually been found from the main sequence turnoff up to the red giant branch. To investigate whether the failure of a significant fraction of stars to ascend the AGB also happens to other GCs, we studied a sample of AGB and RGB stars in NGC 2808 observed at the ESO/VLT with FLAMES. Contrary to NGC 6752, we find that the AGB and RGB stars we studied in NGC 2808 have comparable [Na/Fe] dispersions.

The Working Group was created at the 25th IAU General Assembly in Sydney, Australia, in July 2003 by the IAU Executive Council as a Working Group of IAU Executive. The aims of the Working Group are to evaluate the status of women in astronomy through the collection of statistics over all countries where astronomy research is carried out; and to establish strategies and actions that can help women to attain true equality as research astronomers, which will add enormous value to all of astronomy.

Surveys, surveys, and yet more surveys! During the last decade we have all witnessed a flourishing of imaging and spectroscopic surveys, of different sizes and over different areas of the sky. Although initially set-up for specific scientific goals, they should all share a multi-purpose flavour that can boost their impact and their exploitation by the scientific community. There are, however, fields that need more dedicated observing strategies, coordination and possibly data infrastructure in order to exploit fully these huge datasets. Time-domain astronomy is one of them. In the following, I will review the very recent developments in spectroscopic surveys, and I will report on what ESO has been involved in and has committed itself to do.

Knowledge of lithium, beryllium, and boron abundances in stars of the Galactic halo and disk plays a major role in our understanding of Big Bang nucleosynthesis, cosmic-ray physics, and stellar interiors. 9Be and 10B are believed to originate entirely from spallation reactions in the interstellar medium (ISM) between α-particles and protons and heavy nuclei like carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen (CNO), whereas 11B may have an extra production channel via neutrino-spallation. Beryllium and boron are both observationally challenging, with their main resonant doublets falling respectively at 313 nm and at 250 nm. The advent of 8-10m class telescopes equipped with highly sensitive (in the near-UV/blue) spectrographs has opened up a new era of Be abundance studies. Here, I will review and discuss the most interesting results of recent observational campaigns in terms of formation and evolution of these two light elements.

The “stellar” solution to the cosmological lithium problem proposes that surface depletion of lithium in low-mass, metal-poor stars can reconcile the lower abundances found for Galactic halo stars with the primordial prediction. Globular clusters are ideal environments for studies of the surface evolution of lithium, with large number statistics possible to obtain for main sequence stars as well as giants. We discuss the Li abundances measured for >450 stars in the globular cluster NGC 6397, focusing on the evidence for lithium depletion and especially highlighting how the inferred abundances and interpretations are affected by early cluster self-enrichment and systematic uncertainties in the effective temperature determination.

The primordial lithium abundance inferred from WMAP and standard Big Bang nucleosysnthesis is approximately three times higher than the plateau value measured in old metal-poor Population II stars, suggesting that these stars have undergone atmospheric Li depletion. To constrain the physics responsible for such depletion, we conducted a homogeneous analysis of a large sample of stars in the metal-poor globular cluster NGC 6397, covering all evolutionary phases from below the main-sequence turnoff to high up the red-giant branch (RGB). The dwarf, turnoff, and early subgiant stars form a thin abundance plateau, with a sharpe edge in the middle of the subgiant branch, where Li dilution caused by the inward extension of the convective envelope starts (the beginning of the so-called first dredge up). A second steep abundance drop is seen at the RGB bump, again highlighting the need for the onset of nonstandard mixing in this evolutionary phase. Moreover, by also measuring the sodium abundances of the targets, we have gained insight into the degree of pollution by early cluster self-enrichement, and may separate highly polluted, Li-poor and Na-rich stars from stars formed from pristine material. Our observational findings strictly limit both the extent of lithium surface depletion, which in turn constrains the efficiency of mixing below the outer convection zone, and the resulting spread in lithium abundance in metal-poor turn-off stars.

The rapid neutron-capture process (r-process), which produces some of the heaviest elements, is not well understood. Obtaining accurate abundances of these heavy elements (Z > 38) is important, both in the context of the chemical evolution of the Galaxy and for understanding the site(s) and process(es) of formation of those elements. We have determined elemental abundances for several r-process elements, notably silver, from high resolution VLT/UVES spectra. Silver was chosen because it is predominantly a light r-process element (38 < Z < 50), and little is known about its formation and evolution in the Galaxy. Here, we present our preliminary results.

The second Women in Astronomy Lunchtime Meeting was held on Monday 21 August 2006, with more than 250 participants. The meeting was hosted by the EC Working Group for Women in Astronomy, established at the 2003 IAU General Assembly, and was attended by the current President, the Presidents-Elect for this and the next General Assembly, the General Secretary and Vice-Presidents, many senior astronomers, as well as students and young astronomers. It was a particular pleasure to welcome and congratulate the incoming President, Dr Catherine Cesarsky, the first woman to hold the position.

We show that in a sample of Extremely Metal-Poor (EMP) giants (<[Fe/H]>=−3.1) all the stars with a luminosity higher than logL/L⊙ ≈ 2.6 present the characteristics of a mixing of the surface with the H-burning layer: low abundance of carbon and high abundance of nitrogen. In these “mixed stars” the lithium abundance and the ratio 12C/13C are very low. Some of these stars are also Na or/and Al rich.

Participants in Commission 29 study various aspects of stellar spectra and the information that can be extracted from spectra. The list of fields of interest of the Organizing Committee members suggest some major current research topics in this area are stellar chemical compositions and surface/envelope phenomena. Some of the topics of this commission have overlap with other commissions, such as Commission 14 (Atomic and Molecular Data), 26 (Double and Multiple Stars), 27 (Variable Stars), 30 (Radial Velocities), 36 (Theory of Stellar Atmospheres), and 37 (Star Clusters and Associations). Many Commission 29 members are also members of these other commissions.

As part of a study of the detailed abundance patterns in extremely metal-poor stars, we have compared our samples of giants and dwarfs with two samples of dwarfs measured by different teams. For most elements the abundances are in good agreement, but for C, Na, and Al we show that the atmospheric abundances are different in dwarfs and in giants. For C the difference could be explained by “atmospheric effects” or by the influence of the first dredge-up, but for Na and Al deep mixing inside the stars must be invoked. Until now, such deep mixing has not been observed in metal-poor field stars. An excess scatter in [Mg/Fe] in giants remains unexplained.

We report on a survey of $^7$Li and $^6$Li isotopic abundances in metal-poor halo stars. The spectra of the 24 stars observed with VLT/UVES are of exceptionally high quality: $S/N>400$ and resolving power $R \simeq 120 000$. The $^7$Li abundances on our H$\alpha$$T_{\rm eff}$-scale show very small intrinsic scatter and a pronounced [Fe/H]-dependence. The resulting estimated primordial $^7$Li abundance is about 0.5 dex lower than predicted from Big Bang nucleosynthesis and the baryon density inferred by the cosmic microwave background. Nine of the stars yield a positive detection (${>}2\sigma$) of $^6$Li, which suggests the existence of a $^6$Li plateau for halo stars. The most interesting result is the presence of $^6$Li in the very metal-poor ([Fe/H]$=-2.74$) dwarf LP815-43 at the level of $^6$Li/$^7$Li${\simeq}\, 0.05\pm0.02$. According to models for stellar Li depletion due to diffusion or rotationally-induced mixing, a 0.5 dex $^7$Li depletion would require an unrealistic high initial $^6$Li abundance ($\log ^6{\rm Li} \ge 2.0$). Simultaneously, the observed high $^6$Li abundance at such low [Fe/H] can not be reconciled with existing models for Galactic cosmic ray spallation and $\alpha$-fusion reactions. This opens up exciting prospects of pre-Galactic $^6$Li production, possibly due to cosmological cosmic rays or late-decaying massive particles such as the gravitino or neutralino in the Big Bang.

The Cepheid Period-Luminosity relation is unquestionably one of the most powerful tools at our disposal for determining the extragalactic distance scale. While significant progress has been made in the past few years towards its understanding and characterisation, both on the observational (e.g. the HST Key Project) and theoretical (e.g. non-linear pulsation models, non-LTE atmospheres etc.) sides, the debate on the influence that chemical composition may have on the Period-Luminosity relation is still unsettled. Current estimates lead to differences in the distance as large as 15%, effectively limiting the accuracy of Cepheids as distance indicators. To further tackle this problem, we have obtained high resolution spectra of a large sample of Cepheids in our Galaxy and the Magellanic Clouds. The superb quality of the data allow us to probe the detailed effects of chemical composition (alpha, iron-group, and heavy elements) over more than a factor of ten in metallicity. Here, we present the first preliminary results of the analysis of iron abundances in a sub-sample of Cepheids.

We present preliminary results of an observational campaign devoted to establishing the influence of chemical composition on the Cepheid Period-Luminosity relation. The data are in good agreement with theoretical predictions based on non-linear convective models, suggesting a fairly strong dependence of the Period-Luminosity relation on metallicity in the sense of more metal rich stars being intrinsically fainter than otherwise expected. Our data indicate that the error on the inferred distance can be as large as 10% if the role of metallicity is neglected.

From new high resolution spectra of metal-poor giants we use equivalent widths of [O I], Sc II, and Fe II lines to derive new values of [O/Sc] and [O/Fe]. These results are generally consistent with previous determinations of oxygen abundances from [O I] lines, but the star-to-star scatter is greatly reduced.

Boron, together with lithium and beryllium, belongs to the group of the so-called light elements, the importance of which ranges from providing important tests to Big Bang nucleosynthesis scenarios to being useful probes of stellar interiors and useful tools to further constrain the chemical evolution of the Galaxy.

Since it became operative in the late eighties, the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and its high- and medium-resolution spectrographs have played a key role in analyzing boron. Boron has now been observed in several stars and in the interstellar medium (ISM), providing important information in different fields of astrophysical research (nucleosynthesis, cosmic-ray spallation, stellar structure). In particular, determinations of boron in unevolved stars of different metallicity have allowed to study how boron evolves with iron.

After a general review of the current status of boron observations and of the major uncertainties affecting the measurements of its abundance, I will mainly concentrate on unevolved stars and discuss the ‘evolutionary’ picture emerging from the most recent analyses and how its interpretation compares with theoretical expectations. A brief discussion on future prospects will conclude this contribution, showing how the field may evolve and improve.
