  • The Falerii Novi Project represents a newly formed archaeological initiative to explore the Roman city of Falerii Novi. The project forms a collaboration of the British School at Rome with a multinational team of partner institutions. Thanks to a rich legacy of geophysical work on both the site and its territory, Falerii Novi presents an exceptional opportunity to advance understanding of urbanism in ancient and medieval Italy. The Falerii Novi Project employs a range of methodologies, integrating continued site-scale survey with new campaigns of stratigraphic excavation, archival research and environmental archaeology. The project aims to present a more expansive and holistic urban history of this key Tiber Valley settlement by focusing on long-run socio-economic processes both within Falerii Novi and as they linked the city to its wider landscape.

  • Our understanding of Roman urbanism relies on evidence from a few extensively investigated sites, such as Pompeii and Ostia, which are unrepresentative of the full variety of Roman towns. This article presents the results of the first high-resolution GPR survey of a complete Roman town—Falerii Novi, in Lazio, Italy. The authors review the methods deployed and provide an overview of the results, including discussion of a case-study area within the town. They demonstrate how this type of survey has the potential to revolutionise archaeological studies of urban sites, while also challenging current methods of analysing and publishing large-scale GPR datasets.

    During this presentation, the first pharmacogenetic study on response to methylphenidate (MPH) in adults with ADHD will be reported.

    Methods

    We performed a stratified analysis of the association between response to MPH, assessed under double-blind conditions, in 42 adults with ADHD, and polymorphisms in the genes encoding the dopamine transporter, SLC6A3 (DAT1), the norepinephrine transporter, SLC6A2 (NET), and the dopamine receptor D4, DRD4.

    Results

    Polymorphisms in the DRD4 and the SLC6A2 (NET) genes were not significantly associated with the response to MPH treatment; however, the VNTR polymorphism in the 3'untranslated region of SLC6A3 (DAT1) was significantly associated with an increased likelihood of a response to MPH treatment (odds ratio 5.4; 95% CI 1.4-21.9) in heterozygous 10-repeat allele carriers in comparison with the 10/10 homozygotes: 52.2% of the participants heterozygous for the 10-repeat allele improved significantly on MPH treatment whereas only 22.2% of the 10/10 homozygous individuals did.

    Conclusions

    This study confirms that the SLC6A3 (DAT1) genotype may have an influential role in determining the response to MPH in the treatment of ADHD. The SLC6A3 (DAT1) gene might be a factor worth evaluating further in the future regarding choice of treatment and possibly dose adjustment.

  • Summary

    INTRODUCTION

    In spring 2009, a European project, short-named ‘Radio-Past’, was launched within the FP7 Marie Curie framework ‘Industry-Academia Partnerships and Pathways’. The project, fully titled ‘Radiography of the past, integrated non-destructive approaches to understand and valorise complex archaeological sites’, aims to join different resources and skills to improve, refine and validate intensive archaeological surveys on complex sites, with a special focus on abandoned ancient urban sites in the Mediterranean. A consortium of seven partners merges academic institutions – University of Évora (P), Ghent University (B), University of Ljubljana (Sl) and the British School at Rome (UK), with private companies: 7Reasons Media Agency (A), Past2Present (NL) and Eastern Atlas (D) – to fulfil the objectives of the programme. Its general European-scale aims can be summarised as follows: ‘to open and foster dynamic pathways between public research organisations and commercial enterprises’ and ‘to stimulate inter-sector mobility and increase knowledge sharing through joint research partnerships in longer term co-operation programmes between organisations from Academia and Industry’.

    The Radio-Past project seeks to integrate different methodologies in the widely developed field of non-destructive survey technologies as applied to archaeology, and also to pursue validation of the results through innovative methods of visualisation and the development of strategies for efficient management of the cultural heritage sites studied. It is a main target of this project to allow multiplication of methods and research approaches, and to generate methodological guidelines for archaeological diagnostics. The idea is to develop a standard set of survey approaches, based on a series of already widely used as well as more innovative methods, such as active low-altitude aerial photography, geophysical prospection, Li- DAR survey and geomorphological observations, which can in the future be efficiently used in a comparable and integrated way on a wide range of complex sites in Europe. Practically, this work should result in a guide of good practice for many researchers in survey archaeology, which considers with care the suite of survey approaches that are most appropriate for the nature of each site in question.

  • Exploiting adaptable passive behaviour to influence natural dynamics applied to legged robots

  • This paper reports on the use of a particular actuator in the field of legged robots. The proposed actuator, the Pleated Pneumatic Artificial Muscle, has some interesting characteristics which makes it suitable for machines which move by means of legs. An important issue is the actuator's adaptable passive behaviour which allows the stiffness of a joint that is actuated by two antagonistically coupled muscles, to be varied online. The natural frequency of the system can thus be changed in order to reduce control efforts and energy consumption. The idea of changing this natural frequency in combination with trajectory control will be implemented on a two-dimensional leg model. It will be shown that an appropriate choice of compliance can strongly reduce the amount of needed control activity and energy consumption while tracking a given trajectory.
