Sulfentrazone is a phenyl triazolinone herbicide used for control of certain broadleaf and grass weed species. Sulfentrazone persists in soil and has residual activity beyond the season of application. A laboratory bioassay was developed for the detection of sulfentrazone in soil using root and shoot response of several crops. Shoot length inhibition of sugar beet was found to be the most sensitive and reproducible parameter for measurement of soil-incorporated sulfentrazone. The sugar beet bioassay was then used to examine the effect of soil properties on sulfentrazone phytotoxicity using 10 different Canadian prairie soils. Concentrations corresponding to 50% inhibition (I50 values) were obtained from the dose–response curves constructed for the soils. Sulfentrazone phytotoxicity was strongly correlated to the percentage organic carbon (P = 0.01) and also to percentage clay content (P = 0.05), whereas correlation with soil pH was nonsignificant (P = 0.21). Because sulfentrazone phytotoxicity was found to be soil dependent, the efficacy of sulfentrazone for weed control and sulfentrazone potential carryover injury will vary with soil type in the Canadian prairies.

Objective
The objectives of the present study were to assess the nutritional status, identify factors for malnutrition risk and evaluate barriers to adequate nutrition among recipients of the Public Assistance (PA) scheme for socio-economically disadvantaged Singaporeans.
DesignUsing a cross-sectional study design, we assessed PA recipients’ malnutrition risk using the DETERMINE Nutritional Health checklist and the full Mini-Nutritional Assessment (MNA), as well as their nutritional knowledge, co-morbidity burden, depression risk, instrumental and basic activities of daily living (IADL and BADL), and awareness and utilization of available food services. In-depth interviews were also conducted on malnourished individuals (MNA score < 17) to understand barriers to adequate nutrition.
SettingHomes of community-living older adults and nursing homes of institutionalized older adults.
SubjectsAll PA recipients aged ≥55 years in Central Singapore District.
ResultsFour hundred and sixty-five of 511 (91·0 %) eligible PA recipients participated in the study. The prevalence of malnutrition in the study population was 2·8 %. However, 50·3 % were at risk of malnutrition. Among community-dwelling respondents, the risk of malnutrition was independently associated with age >75 years, currently unmarried, BADL impairment, depression risk and BMI < 19·0 kg/m2. Qualitative analysis revealed that financial, social and physical barriers and lack of knowledge were the main contributors to poor nutritional status. Only half were aware of subsidized food services and education increased interest in utilizing food services. Among nursing home respondents, those who were BADL impaired were more likely to be at risk of malnutrition.
ConclusionsAmong PA recipients, the prevalence of malnutrition is low but the risk of malnutrition is high. Education on adequate nutrition and food services are recommended.

The idea for a Federal Marriage Amendment (FMA) did not suddenly dawn upon Senate Republicans in the summer of 2004, when debate on the amendment began in earnest on the floor of the U.S. Senate. Despite the passage of the federal Defense of Marriage Act in 1996, conservatives have long worried about what they believe are the threats to traditional heterosexual marriage posed by the courts. Their fears peaked in 2003, when the courts struck twice: the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Lawrence v. Texas that state homosexual sodomy laws are unconstitutional, while the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts in Goodridge v. Department of Public Health ordered state officials to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

This paper presents the possible periodic solutions and the solitons of the cubic–quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Corresponding to five types of different structures of the pseudo-potentials, five types of periodic solutions are given explicitly. Five types of solitons are also obtained explicitly from the limiting procedures of the periodic solutions. This will benefit the study of the generation of fast ions or electrons, which are produced from the soliton breaking when the plasma is irradiated a high-intensity laser pulse.

Objective:
Cardiac marker sensitivity depends on chest pain duration at the time of sampling. Our objective was to estimate the sensitivity, specificity, and likelihood ratios of early CK–MB and myoglobin assays in patients presenting to the emergency department (ED) with nondiagnostic ECGs, stratified by the duration of ongoing chest pain at the time of ED assessment.
Methods:This was a prospective observational study carried out in 10 US and 2 Canadian EDs. Patients >25 years of age with ongoing chest pain and nondiagnostic ECGs were stratified by pain duration (0–4 h, 4–8 h, 8–12 h, >12 h). CK–MB and myoglobin assays were drawn at T = 0 (ED assessment) and T = 1 hr. Patients were followed for 7–14 days to identify all cases of acute myocardial infarction (AMI). ED test results were correlated with patient outcomes.
Results:Of 5005 eligible patients, 565 had AMI. Pain duration was 0–4 h in 3014 patients, 4–8 h in 961, 8–12 h in 487, and >12 h in 543. Marker sensitivity increased with pain duration, ranging from 28%–77% for CK–MB and 39%–73% for myoglobin. The maximal sensitivity achieved by a T = 0 assay was 73%, and this was in patients with 8–12 or >12 h of ongoing pain. No combination of tests achieved 90% sensitivity in any pain duration strata.
Conclusions:Regardless of chest pain duration, single assays and early serial markers (0+1 hr) do not rule out AMI; therefore, serial assays over longer observation periods are required. Likelihood ratios derived in this study will help physicians who use Bayesian analysis to determine post-test AMI likelihood in patients with chest pain.
