ATO4 compounds are a class of oxides which includes the rare earth element (REE) bearing phosphates and arsenates, REEPO4 and REEAsO4. In this study, we have investigated the isothermal high-pressure and the isobaric high-temperature behaviour of natural samples of xenotime-(Y) (ideally YPO4), chernovite-(Y) (YAsO4) and monazite-(Ce) (CePO4) from the hydrothermal veins cropping out at Mt. Cervandone in the Western Italian Alps. Experimental data based on in situ X-ray diffraction (both single-crystal and powder techniques with conventional or synchrotron radiation) have allowed us to fit the unit-cell volumes and axial thermal and compressional evolution and provide a suite of refined thermo-elastic parameters. A comprehensive analysis of the role played by the crystal chemistry on the thermo-elastic response of these minerals is discussed, along with the description of the main crystal-structural deformation mechanisms for both the zircon (xenotime and chernovite) and monazite (monazite) structural types. Pressure-induced phase transitions of xenotime-(Y) and chernovite-(Y) are discussed and compared with previous literature data, whereas a change in the compressional behaviour of monazite-(Ce) at ∼18 GPa, involving an increase in the coordination number of the REE-hosting A site, is presented and discussed.

The high-pressure behaviour of inderborite [ideally CaMg[B3O3(OH)5]2(H2O)4⋅2H2O, space group C2/c with a ≈ 12.14, b ≈ 7.43, c ≈ 19.23 Å and β ≈ 90.3° at room conditions] has been studied by two in situ single-crystal synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiments up to ~10 GPa, using He as pressure-transmitting fluid. Between 8.11(5) and 8.80(5) GPa, inderborite undergoes a first-order phase transition to its high-pressure polymorph, inderborite-II (with a ≈ 11.37, b ≈ 6.96, c ≈ 17.67 Å, β ≈ 96.8° and ΔV ≈ 7.0%, space group unknown). The isothermal bulk modulus (KV0 = β−1P0,T0, where βP0,T0 is the volume compressibility coefficient) of inderborite was found to be KV0 = 41(1) GPa. The destructive nature of the phase transition prevented any structure resolution of inderborite-II or even the continuation of the experiments at pressures higher than 10.10(5) GPa. In the pressure range 0–8.11(5) GPa, the compressional anisotropy of inderborite, indicated by the ratio between the principal components of the Eulerian finite unit-strain ellipsoid, is ɛ1:ɛ2:ɛ3 = 1.4:1.05:1. The deformation mechanisms at the atomic scale in inderborite are here described. Our findings support the hypothesis of a quasi-linear correlation between the total H2O content and P-stability range in hydrated borates, as the pressure at which inderborite undergoes the phase transition falls in line with most of the hydrate borates studied at high-pressure so far.

This study describes a new variety of chalcedony with a unique inhomogeneous bluish green hue, named aquaprase. It was discovered in Africa and is considered to be a valuable addition to the gem trade. A multi-methodological approach was used to examine its chemistry, mineralogy and microstructure, which were then compared to those of chrysoprase and agate, two of the most popular varieties of chalcedony. Optical microscopy revealed a complex microstructural heterogeneity in the different colour intensity areas/bands of aquaprase and agate, whereas chrysoprase exhibited a more homogeneous coexistence of micro- and cryptocrystalline quartz. High-resolution synchrotron XRD was essential for highlighting the complex assemblage of various types of α-quartz in aquaprase and agate (which differ in terms of crystal size and/or cell parameters). Micro-Raman spectroscopy revealed α-quartz and moganite in all three varieties of chalcedony and the presence of the nickel-bearing layered silicate mineral, willemseite, in chrysoprase, which is responsible for its green colouration. The chemical analysis displayed a homogeneous composition of agate, as well as high levels of nickel content in the chrysoprase variety. Aquaprase showed significant amounts (ppm by weight) of trace elements (Al, Mg, Na, K, Ca, Ti, U and Fe) characteristic of its formation environment, as well as high values of Cr, which are thought to be the cause of its bluish green colouration.

Valsassina (Lombardy, Northern Italy) is located in the Lombard Southern Alps and is characterised by the presence of a metamorphic basement, by a major late Variscan intrusive complex and by Carboniferous–Permian volcano-sedimentary cover units. These rocks host a pervasive system of inadequately studied mineralised veins. These veins are characterised by base metal (Pb, Zn, Cu and Fe) and complex polymetallic assemblages.

In this study, we have investigated the ore textures, mineral compositions of sulfides and sulfosalts (by EMPA–WDS and LA–ICP–MS analyses), and stable isotopes (C and O) in carbonate gangue minerals of various mineralised veins to determine the conditions of deposition of these ore deposits. Two different vein families can be recognised in Valsassina: NNW–SSE veins characterised by a complex polymetallic sulfide–sulfosalt assemblage, also with Ni–Co–Fe arsenides and other Ag–Bi-bearing minerals; and NE–SW veins with a simpler, base metal sulfide assemblage. The Ni–Co-bearing NNW–SSE veins have some distinctive features of the ‘five-element vein’ type deposits, with the Ni–Co–Fe arsenide ore stage pre-dating a sulfide-tetrahedrite-dominated ore stage. LA–ICP–MS data for pyrite and sphalerite, and stable isotopic compositions (C and O) of the carbonate gangue minerals, show no clear differences between the two families of veins, which are probably linked genetically. The isotopic compositions of the Valsassina vein carbonates are closely comparable with the signature of several major five-element ore districts. Preliminary temperature estimates for the Valsassina vein systems were based on the sphalerite composition, applying the GGIMFis geothermometer. The estimated temperatures for the sulfide-dominated ore stage post-dating the Ni–Co minerals precipitation range between 100 and 250°C. The crosscutting relationships, observed for all the veins with the host rocks, suggest a possible late to post Variscan (late Permian) age, making these vein systems comparable with other late–post Variscan polyphase hydrothermal events affecting large sectors of the Southern Alpine domain.

The crystal chemistry and crystal structure of the rare earth element phosphates, monazite-(Ce), Ce(PO4), and xenotime-(Y), Y(PO4), as well as the arsenates, gasparite-(Ce), Ce(AsO4), and chernovite-(Y), Y(AsO4), from the hydrothermal quartz-bearing fissures, related to pegmatites overprinted by amphibolite facies, cropping out at Mt. Cervandone, Western Alps, Piedmont, Italy, have been investigated by means of electron microprobe analysis in wavelength dispersion mode and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The chemical data reveal the occurrence of a full solid solution among the isostructural chernovite-(Y) and xenotime-(Y) with tetragonal symmetry, whereas a wide miscibility gap is observed for the isostructural gasparite-(Ce) and monazite-(Ce) of Mt. Cervandone, with monoclinic symmetry. A significant chemical heterogeneity has been observed for several investigated samples, especially related to the Th content, which is locally enriched in ThSiO4 grains. The analysis of the refined structural models demonstrates the significant control played by the composition of the tetrahedrally-coordinated (As,P)-bearing sites on the bulk unit-cell volume, and on the size and shape of the (REE)-coordination polyhedra.

Combined microstructural, mineral chemical, X-ray maps and X-ray single-crystal diffraction analyses are used to reveal the behaviour of individual grains of magmatic allanite relicts hosted in variably deformed metagranitoids at Lago della Vecchia (inner part of the Sesia-Lanzo Zone, Western Alps, Europe), which experienced high-pressure and low-temperature metamorphism during the Alpine subduction. X-ray single-crystal diffraction shows that none of the allanite crystals, irrespective of the strain state of the host rock, record any evidence of plastic deformation (i.e. intracrystalline deformation), as indicated by the shape of the Bragg diffraction spots, the atomic site positions, and their displacement around the centre of gravity. On the contrary, strong plastic deformation affected matrix minerals, such as quartz, white mica and feldspar of the hosting rocks, during the development of the Alpine eclogitic- and blueschist-facies metamorphism. Despite the strain-free atomic structures of allanite, different patterns of chemical zoning, as a function of strain accumulated in the rock matrix, are observed. As allanite occurs in magmatic and metamorphic rocks and it is stable at high-pressure and low-temperature conditions, we infer that allanite could behave as one of the main carriers of light rare earth elements into the mantle wedge during subduction of continental crust. In particular, the release of light rare earth elements from allanite, under high-pressure conditions in subduction zones, is facilitated by high strain accumulated in the host rock.

The low-temperature structural behaviour of natural cancrinite with a formula Na6.59Ca0.93[Si6.12Al5.88O24](CO3)1.04F0.41·2H2O has been investigated by means of in situ single-crystal X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. High quality structure refinements were obtained at 293, 250, 220, 180, 140, 100 and at 293 K again (at the end of the low-T experiments). The variation in the unit-cell volume as a function of temperature (T) exhibits a continuous trend, without any evident thermoelastic anomaly. The thermal expansion coefficient αV = (1/V)∂V/∂T is 3.8(7) × 10–5 K–1 (between 100 and 293 K). The structure refinement based on intensity data collected at ambient conditions after the low-T experiment confirmed that the low-T induced deformation processes are completely reversible. The extraframework population does not show significant variations down to 100 K. The strong positional disorder of the carbonate groups along the c axis persists within the T range investigated. The structural behaviour of cancrinite at low-T is mainly governed by the continuous framework rearrangement through the ditrigonalization of the six-membered rings which lie in a plane perpendicular to [0001], the contraction of the four-membered ring joint units, the decrease of the ring corrugation in the (0001) plane, and the flattening of the cancrinite cages. A list of the principal Raman active modes in ambient conditions is provided and discussed.

The spinel-group minerals, found in a range of igneous rocks, are resistant to weathering and can incorporate several multivalent elements, meaning they have the potential to provide insight into the redox conditions of parental magmas. Naturally occurring spinel can contain varying quantities of Mn, an element which occurs terrestrially and extra-terrestrially as Mn2+, Mn3+, Mn4+ and Mn5+. However, a lack of information on the effects of oxygen fugacity ($f_{{\rm O}_{\rm 2}}$) on: (1) Mn valence state and cation distribution; and (2) on spinel-melt partitioning means that the potential for a Mn-in-spinel oxy-barometer remains largely untested. Here, we use electron probe microanalysis, micro-focus X-ray Absorption Near Edge Structure (XANES) spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) to investigate cation distribution and valence state in spinels in the Al–Mn–O and Fe–Mn–O systems synthesized at ambient pressure under varying $\hskip 2pt f_{{\rm O}_{\rm 2}}$ conditions. In contrast to previous studies, we find that the spectral resolution of the Mn K-edge XANES spectra is insufficient to provide quantitative data on Mn valence state and site occupancy, although it does verify that Mn is incorporated as both Mn2+ and Mn3+, distributed over tetrahedral and octahedral sites. Combination of data from XANES and SC-XRD refinements can, however, be used to model Mn, Al and Fe valence and site occupancy. It would be expected that Mn–Fe spinels have the potential to record $f_{{\rm O}_{\rm 2}}$ conditions in parental melts due to changes to the octahedral site under conditions that were more reducing. However, decoupling the effects of temperature and oxygen fugacity on the TFe3+–TMn2+ exchange in the Mn–Fe spinels remains challenging. In contrast, little variation is noted in Mn–Al spinels as a function of $\hskip 2pt f_{{\rm O}_{\rm 2}}$, implying that crystal chemistry and cation site geometry may significantly influence cation distribution, and by inference, crystal-melt partitioning, in spinel-group minerals.

A multi-methodological study of the (K,Ca)-variety of the zeolite merlinoite from Fosso Attici, Sacrofano, Italy was carried out on the basis of electron microprobe analysis in wavelength dispersive mode, singlecrystal X-ray diffraction (at 100 K), Raman and infrared spectroscopy. Thechemical formula of the merlinoite from Fosso Attici is (Na0.37K5.69)Σ=6.06(Mg0.01Ca1.93Ba0.40)Σ=2.34(Fe0.023+Al10.55Si21.38)Σ=31.9O64·19.6H2O,compatible with the ideal chemical formula K6Ca2[Al10Si22O64]·20H2O.

Anisotropic structure refinements confirmed the symmetry and the framework model previously reported (space group Immm, a = 14.066(5),b = 14.111(5), c = 9.943(3) Å at 100 K). Refinement converged with four cationic sites and six H2O sites; refined bond distances of the framework tetrahedra suggest a highly disordered Si/Al-distribution. The Raman spectrum of merlinoite (collected between 100and 4000 cm–1) is dominated by a doublet of bands between 496–422 cm–1, assigned to tetrahedral T–O–T symmetric bending modes. T–O–T antisymmetric stretching is also observed; stretching and bending modes of the H2Omolecules are only clearly visible when using a blue laser. The single-crystal near-infrared spectrum shows a very weak band at 6823 cm–1, assigned to the first overtone of the O–H stretching mode, and a band at 5209 cm–1, due to the combination of H2Ostretching and bending modes. Avery broad and convoluted absorption, extending from 3700 to 3000 cm–1 occurs in the H2O stretching region, while the ν2 bending mode of H2O is found at 1649 cm–1. The powder mid-infraredspectrum of merlinoite between 400–1300 cm–1 is dominated by tetrahedral T–O–T symmetric and antisymmetric stretches. Raman and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy spectra of merlinoite and phillipsite provide a quick identification tool for these zeolites,which are often confused due to their close similarity.

The crystal chemistry of allactite from Långban, Värmland (Sweden) was investigated by single-crystal X-ray and neutron diffraction, optical absorption spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infra-red spectroscopy (FTIR) and electron microprobe analysis by wavelength-dispersive spectroscopy (EPMA-WDS). The optical spectra indicate the presence of Mn in valence state 2+ only. Assuming 16 O atoms per formula unit, arsenic as As5+ and the (OH) content calculated by charge balance, the resulting formula based on the EPMA-WDS data is (Mn2+ 6.73Ca0.13Mg0.12Zn0.02)∑7.00(As5+)2.00O16H8, very close to the ideal composition Mn7(AsO4)2(OH)8. In the unpolarized FTIR spectrum of allactite, fundamental (OH)-stretching bands are observed at 3236, 3288, 3387, 3446, 3484, 3562 and 3570 cm–1, suggesting that a number of OH environments, with different hydrogen bond strengths, occur in the structure. The neutron structure refinement shows that four independent H sites occur in allactite with full site occupancy, all as members of hydroxyl groups. The complex hydrogen-bonding scheme in the allactite structure is now well defined, with at least nine hydrogen bonds energetically favourable with mono-, bi- and trifurcated configurations.
