I will describe how a fraudulent paper developed and offer insights into the institutional changes that are needed. I was a co-author on a paper described as a “clusterfake” due to at least two frauds allegedly occurring in the same paper. I will use my knowledge of behavioral ethics and my experience as a co-author on a fraudulent paper to explore changes that are needed to improve research integrity.

We provide an assessment of the Infinity Two Fusion Pilot Plant (FPP) baseline plasma physics design. Infinity Two is a four-field period, aspect ratio A = 10, quasi-isodynamic stellarator with improved confinement appealing to a max-J approach, elevated plasma density and high magnetic fields (⟨B⟩ = 9 T). At the envisioned operating point [800 MW deuterium-tritium (DT) fusion], the configuration has robust magnetic surfaces based on magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equilibrium calculations and is stable to both local and global MHD instabilities. The configuration has excellent confinement properties with small neoclassical transport and low bootstrap current (|Ibootstrap| ∼ 2 kA). Calculations of collisional alpha particle confinement in a DT FPP scenario show small energy losses to the first wall (< 1.5%) and stable energetic particle/Alfvén eigenmodes at high ion density. Low turbulent transport is produced using a combination of density profile control consistent with pellet fueling and reduced stiffness to turbulent transport via three-dimensional shaping. Transport simulations with the T3D-GX-SFINCS code suite with self-consistent turbulent and neoclassical transport predict that the Pfus = 800 MW operating point is attainable with high fusion gain (Q = 40) at volume-averaged electron densities ne ≈ 2×1020 m−3, below the Sudo density limit. Additional transport calculations show that an ignited (Q = ∞) solution is available at slightly higher density (2.2×1020 m−3) with Pfus = 1.5 GW. The magnetic configuration is defined by a magnetic coil set with sufficient room for an island divertor, shielding and blanket solutions with tritium breeding ratios (TBR) above unity. An optimistic estimate for the gas-cooled solid breeder designed Helium Cooled Pebble Bed is TBR ∼ 1.3. Infinity Two satisfies the physics requirements of a stellarator fusion pilot plant.

Despite a trend of increasing multilevel government across the globe, there are surprisingly few studies on public support for decisions taken by different government levels. Decentralization is likely to boost government support because it increases congruence between citizens and their representatives. We argue that citizens’ preferences for subnational authority are key for their willingness to accept governmental decisions. Citizens who prefer decentralization are more supportive of subnational decisions, and their support for national decisions increases when subnational governments are involved in the decision-making process. We fielded a survey that asked 1,855 Norwegian respondents their willingness to accept decisions taken by their municipality, county, and national government to close an educational institution in their municipality. We find substantial empirical evidence for our hypotheses. Norway is a least-likely-case because government tiers enjoy high levels of trust. Therefore, the results have also important implications for the legitimacy of multilevel government in other countries.

Affective ties encompass a broad family of emotional phenomena, including love, affection, attachment, and devotion. Affective ties may appear deeply personal, and they most certainly are. But they are also important resources for the exercise of political power in international politics – not only as vulnerabilities that can be exploited for coercion but also, and more significantly, as means to mobilise action and sacrifice. Viewed from the vantage point of political agents, affective ties are thus power resources whose distribution in the international system shapes their strategies and choices. Viewed from the perspective of the system, the international realm is not only characterised by struggles over material capabilities or ideas but also competition over affective ties. Correspondingly, nationalism is not simply an identity. It is a collection of techniques and practices for generating and capturing affective ties that has emerged as a highly effective contender in this contest, with crucial implications for how the international system is organised. That being said, other forms of eliciting affective ties also persist.

By the reason that mathematical analysis is not feasible for practical control of buildings, decentralized control (DC) and fuzzy control (FC) technologies were introduced to optimize the control problem of high-rise building (HRB) structures. For the control problem of HRB structures, magnetorheological fluid dampers (MRFDs) were introduced to optimize the lateral stress problem of each floor, and the influence of different output variables on FC was compared. In the analysis of fuzzy DC experiments, there were significant differences in the impact of different structural controls (SCs) on building acceleration. In the comparison of the interstory displacement (ISD) time history of the lower concrete structure, the maximum ISD value without control was -12 cm in the nineth second, −7 cm in the nineth second of LQR (linear quadratic regularization) control, and -6 cm in the FC. The proposed biomedical evolutionary technology had better SC effects in practical scenarios, with better safety and stability. The research was mainly based on FC controller technology, and in the future, updated IT2FL (interval type2 fuzzy logic) control technology can be adopted. At the same time, machine learning models are used to optimize parameter problems and improve the control effect of concrete structures. Therefore, fluid dampers help reduce vibrations caused by external earthquakes and other dynamic loads. By dampening devices, fluid dampers enhance the overall stability of the building by improving comfort levels. By allowing for lighter structural designs, fluid dampers can reduce the amount of material needed for construction, leading to cost savings. With reduced vibrations and stresses, there may be fewer maintenance issues over time. Fluid dampers can be designed for various types of structures and can be used in conjunction with other damping systems, making them flexible solutions for different engineering challenges. The future study can be effectively combined with base isolation systems to further improve a building’s resilience against seismic forces.

The selection, design, and optimization of a suitable blanket configuration for an advanced high-field stellarator concept is seen as a key feasibility issue and has been incorporated as a vital and necessary part of the Infinity Two Fusion Pilot Plant (FPP) physics basis. The focus of this work was to identify a baseline blanket which can be rapidly deployed for Infinity Two while also maintaining flexibility and opportunities for higher performing concepts later in development. Results from this analysis indicate that gas-cooled solid breeder designs such as the Helium Cooled Pebble Bed (HCPB) are the most promising concepts, primarily motivated by the neutronics performance at applicable blanket build depths, and the relatively mature technology basis. The lithium lead (PbLi) family of concepts, particularly the Dual Cooled Lithium Lead (DCLL), offer a compelling alternative to solid blanket concepts as they have synergistic developmental pathways while simultaneously mitigating much of the technical risk of those designs. Homogenized 3-dimensional neutronics analysis of the Infinity Two configuration indicates that the HCPB achieves an adequate tritium breeding ratio (TBR) (1.30 which enables sufficient margin at low engineering fidelity), and near appropriate shielding of the magnets (average fast fluence of 1.3 x 1018 n/cm2 per fullpower year). The thermal analysis indicates that reasonably high thermal efficiencies (greater than 30%) are readily achievable with the HCPB paired with a simple Rankine cycle using reheat. Finally, the tritium fuel cycle analysis for Infinity Two shows viability, with anticipated operational inventories of less than one kilogram (approximately 675 grams) and a required TBR (TBRreq) of less than 1.05 to maintain fuel self-sufficiency (approximately 1.023 for a driver blanket with no inventory doubling). Although further optimization and engineering design is still required, at the physics basis stage all initial targets have been met for the Infinity Two configuration.

Artificial sweeteners are used to reduce energy intake, but studies suggest that consumption during pregnancy may impact the offspring’s risk of overweight. In this longitudinal cohort study, we aimed to examine the association between consumption of artificially sweetened or sugar-sweetened beverages during pregnancy and offspring overweight from birth to 18 years in the Danish National Birth Cohort (DNBC). 101,042 pregnancies were enrolled in the DNBC from 1996-2002. Follow-up was conducted throughout pregnancy, childhood, and adolescence. 72,821 women completed a Food Frequency Questionnaire during pregnancy reporting intake of beverages sweetened with artificial sweeteners or sugar. Offspring height and weight were obtained during childhood and adolescence. Multivariate logistic regression was performed to estimate the odds ratio (OR) for overweight concerning maternal beverage consumption. Analyses were adjusted for risk factors for childhood overweight, including maternal age, pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI), physical activity and smoking in pregnancy, healthy eating index, paternal BMI, socioeconomic status, and duration of breastfeeding. We found increased odds of overweight in 7, 11, 14, and 18-year-old offspring, whose mothers reported drinking ≥1 artificially sweetened beverages daily during pregnancy compared to no consumption (18 years: adjusted OR 1.26 (95% confidence interval 1.12, 1.42)). We found decreased adjusted odds of overweight in 11 and 18-year-old offspring, whose mothers reported drinking ≥1 sugar-sweetened beverages daily during pregnancy compared to no consumption. We found that consumption of artificially sweetened beverages during pregnancy was associated with an increased risk of overweight in childhood and adolescence. Adjustment for risk factors for overweight and total energy intake did not explain the association. Further studies are warranted to establish the mechanism of the association.

This article explores the concept of partnerships in public humanities as both a process and a vital outcome. Drawing from experiences within a classroom environment, where university students and community members learned and engaged together, we identify three key precepts for sustaining effective community-university partnerships: centering human relationships, leveraging institutionalization, and redistributing risk. These strategies do not aim to avoid the challenges inherent in collaboration but rather use complexities as opportunities for deeper engagement. We argue that community-university partnerships should themselves be viewed as a valuable and meaningful form of public humanities.
