The phoretic mite assemblage of the Douglas-fir beetle, Dendroctonus pseudotsugae Hopkins (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), has not been thoroughly documented. Phoretic mites can impact fitness and population dynamics of hosts; documenting a mite assemblage may provide information on their ecological roles. We caught Douglas-fir beetles in central British Columbia, Canada, and sorted associated mites into morphospecies. Representatives of the morphospecies were DNA barcoded (CO1 barcode region), indicating at least nine operational taxonomic units (OTUs). Representatives of all OTUs were slide-mounted and morphologically identified. There was a mean of 50.5 ± 4.7 mites per beetle, with both females and males carrying similar numbers of most mite species, except for OTU B1, which was found in higher numbers on females. OTU B1, Parawinterschmidtia furnissi (Woodring) (Astigmata: Winterschmidtiidae), was found in substantially higher numbers than all other OTUs and was always clustered in large aggregations in an anterior pocket on the beetles’ subelytral surface. When this OTU was removed from the calculation, the mean number dropped to 1.3 ± 0.2 mites per beetle. The consistent high numbers of OTU B1 in conjunction with its consistent anatomical aggregation suggests an important interaction between this particular mite species and the Douglas-fir beetle.

Meta-learning offers a promising framework to make sense of some parts of decision-making that have eluded satisfactory explanation. Here, we connect this research to work in animal behaviour and cognition in order to shed light on how and whether meta-learning could help us to understand the evolution of cognition.

Background: Candida auris is an emerging threat to hospitalized patients and invasive disease is associated with high mortality. This study describes clinical and microbiological characteristics of nine patients identified with C. auris at Ohio State Wexner Medical Center discovered through active surveillance or clinical investigation and uses whole genome sequencing (WGS) to compare isolates. Methods: In November 2022, an active C. auris surveillance program was implemented to screen patients admitted to high-risk units (intensive care units and progressive care units). Bilateral axilla and groin swabs were obtained upon unit admission and, if positive, were submitted for C. auris polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with culture and sensitivity testing. Patients with a positive screening or clinical isolate from November 2022 to November 2023 underwent chart review for clinical characteristics, microbiologic data, and index admission information. For each isolate, DNA was extracted and WGS was performed. Core single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) variation identified from the sequence data was used to infer genetic relationships among the isolates. Results: Nine patients were identified between November 2022 and November 2023. The clinical and microbiologic characteristics are summarized in Table 1. All patients were hospitalized at various acute care facilities across the state at least once in the preceding 12 months. C. auris was determined to be present on admission for 6 patients. For 5 of these patients, it was their first interaction with our healthcare system. Three patients were not in contact isolation for >3 days before C. auris was identified. Unit wide point-prevalence screening was completed in these cases and no evidence of transmission was found. WGS showed eight of the nine isolates were related with 28 or less core SNP differences between isolates (Figure 1). One isolate (8) was genetically distinct with >45000 core SNP differences. Five isolates were highly related with a range of 4-15 SNP differences. No temporal or spatial overlap at our institution was identified among these five patients. Conclusions: The active surveillance program identified several patients colonized with C. auris in addition to those found through clinical testing. Multiple risk factors for C. auris were identified with high patient mortality (67%). Majority of the isolates were closely related without association with a known outbreak or epidemiologic link, suggesting a possible diffuse common reservoir. Next steps with surveillance in acute care and long-term care facilities will be critical for early detection to halt transmission of this organism.

In their target article, John et al. make a convincing case that there is a unified phenomenon behind the common finding that measures become worse targets over time. Here, we will apply their framework to the domain of animal welfare science and present a pragmatic solution to reduce its impact that might also be applicable in other domains.

Significant gaps exist in representation of diverse populations in central-line assessment education and tools. We review some of these gaps and provide some real-world guidance on how to assess central line sites in patients of all skin tones.

Deep neural networks (DNNs) have found many useful applications in recent years. Of particular interest have been those instances where their successes imitate human cognition and many consider artificial intelligences to offer a lens for understanding human intelligence. Here, we criticize the underlying conflation between the predictive and explanatory power of DNNs by examining the goals of modeling.

In order to understand involuntary autobiographical memories and déjà vu experiences, we argue that it is important to take an evolutionary medicine perspective. Here, we propose that these memory anomalies can be understood as the outcomes of an inevitable design trade-off between type I and type II errors in memory processing.

There is a puzzle in reconciling the widespread presence of puritanical norms condemning harmless pleasures with the theory that morality evolved to reap the benefits of cooperation. Here, we draw on the work of several philosophers to support the argument by Fitouchi et al. that these norms evolved to facilitate and scaffold self-control for the sake of cooperation.

Despite the once-common idea that a universal ideography would have numerous advantages, attempts to develop such ideographies have failed. Here, we make use of the biological idea of fitness landscapes to help us understand the nonevolution of such a universal ideographic code as well as how we might reach this potential global fitness peak in the design space.

It is a hotly contested issue whether polygenic scores should play a major role in the social sciences. Here, we defend a methodologically pluralist stance in which sociogenomics should abandon its hype and recognize that it suffers from all the methodological difficulties of the social sciences, yet nevertheless maintain an optimistic stance toward a more cautious use.

We examined the association between multidrug resistance and socioeconomic status (SES), analyzing microbiological and ZIP-code–level socioeconomic data. Using generalized linear models, we determined that multidrug resistance is significantly and persistently more prevalent in samples taken from patients residing in low-income ZIP codes versus high-income ZIP codes in North Carolina.

In order to address why the number of patients suffering from anxiety and depression are seemingly exploding in Western, educated, industrialized, rich, and democratic (WEIRD) countries, it is sensible to look at the evolution of human fearfulness responses. Here, we draw on Veit's pathological complexity framework to advance Grossmann's goal of re-characterizing human fearfulness as an adaptive trait.

Why is it that people simultaneously treat social robots as mere designed artefacts, yet show willingness to interact with them as if they were real agents? Here, we argue that Dennett's distinction between the intentional stance and the design stance can help us to resolve this puzzle, allowing us to further our understanding of social robots as interactive depictions.

Measurement of subjective animal welfare creates a special problem in validating the measurement indicators used. Validation is required to ensure indicators are measuring the intended target state, and not some other object. While indicators can usually be validated by looking for correlation between target and indicator under controlled manipulations, this is not possible when the target state is not directly accessible. In this article, I outline a four-step approach using the concept of robustness that can help with validating indicators of subjective animal welfare.

Heintz & Scott-Phillips provide a useful synthesis for constructing a bridge between work by both cognitive scientists and evolutionary biologists studying the diversity of human communication. Here, we aim to strengthen their bridge from the side of evolutionary biology, to argue that we can best understand ostensive communication as a scaffold for more complex forms of intentional expressions.

Dubourg and Baumard mention a potential role for the human drive to systemise as a factor motivating interest in imaginary worlds. Given that hyperexpression of this trait has been linked with autism (Baron-Cohen, 2002, 2006), we think this raises interesting implications for how those on the autism spectrum may differ from the neurotypical population in their engagement with imaginary worlds.

In this commentary we advance Jagiello et al.'s proposal by zooming in on the possible evolutionary origins of the “bifocal stance” that may have enabled a major transition in human cultural evolution, arguing that the evolution of the bifocal stance was driven by an explosion in cultural complexity arising from cooperative foraging, which led to a feedback loop between the ritual and instrumental stances.
