The interaction between negatively charged all-inorganic silicon quantum dots (Si QDs) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) is studied. It is shown that a small difference in the size of Si QDs affects the structure of Si QD–BSA composites significantly. When the diameter of Si QDs is 4 nm, a heterodimer (~20 nm) composed of one Si QD and one BSA molecule is a preferable and stable structure. On the other hand, when the diameter is 7 nm, the size of the composites increases to ~50 nm. The Si QD–BSA composites exhibit stable photoluminescence in the near-infrared range in phosphate-buffered saline.

A process for bioconjugation of an IgG antibody and silicon quantum dots (Si-QDs) having the luminescence in the near-infrared (NIR) range was developed. For the bioconjugation, the surface of water-soluble all-inorganic Si-QDs was functionalized by using silane-coupling agents. In amino-functionalized Si-QDs, successful conjugation was achieved without strongly affecting the luminescence property. Detailed analyses revealed that Si-QDs are bound covalently to both the light and heavy chains of an IgG antibody. It was also confirmed that the binding property of an IgG antibody with antigen nucleoprotein was not ruined by the process. The successful conjugation of an IgG antibody and NIR luminescent Si-QDs paves the way for designing environmentally friendly bio-sensing and -imaging processes.

We demonstrate formation of allylamine (AAm) and acrylic acid (AAc)-functionalized colloidal silicon nanocrystals (Si NCs) exhibiting near-infrared (NIR) luminescence and immobilization of the NCs on substrates via covalent bond. The surface functionalization is confirmed by IR absorption spectroscopy and specific binding property of functionalized NCs. Atomic force microscope observations reveal that AAm- and AAc-functionalized Si NCs are chemically immobilized on self-assembled monolayers via covalent bonds. The functionalized Si NCs exhibit photoluminescence in a NIR region (1.5–1.6 eV), which is not significantly affected by the functionalization.

We analyze phosphorus (P)- and boron (B)-doped silicon nanocrystals (Si NCs) with various compositions of silicon-rich oxide using atom probe tomography. By creating Si iso-concentration surfaces, it is confirmed that there are two types of Si NC networks depending on the amount of excess Si. A proximity histogram shows that P prefers to locate inside the Si NCs, whereas B is more likely to reside outside the Si NCs. We discuss the difference in a preferential location between P and B by a segregation coefficient.

Junctional ectopic tachycardia, after surgery for CHD, is a serious arrhythmia that can cause increased morbidity and mortality. We report a case of junctional ectopic tachycardia, preceded by sepsis, in a 4-year-old girl, 31 months after open-heart surgery. She was successfully treated using low-dose landiolol hydrochloride.

Objectives: We have compared mortality and risk factors for late deaths in patients with tetralogy of Fallot undergoing surgical repair in 1972 and 1982 in a Japanese multicentric study, examining in particular the impact of time of repair. Background: There is limited information on the effect that time of repair, and our constantly changing approach to it, has on late outcome in repaired tetralogy of Fallot. Methods: We analysed the Japanese registry of deaths occurring after surgical repair of tetralogy of Fallot. We studied two postoperative 1-year cohorts of survivors of surgery performed in 12 centers. Of the patients, 122, aged 29 ± 12 years, had undergone repair in 1972, their age at repair being 9.6 years. An additional 186 patients, aged 23 ± 8.7 years, had been repaired in 1982 at the age of 7.7 years. Results: Annual mortality, as judged per 100,000 population of patients with tetralogy of Fallot, declined from 0.387 in 1972 to 0.196 in 1982. Significant differences were deaths following surgery (27% vs. 13%, p < 0.001), patching of the subpulmonary outflow tract (48% vs. 89%, p < 0.001), and transjunctional patching (13% vs. 63%, p < 0.001). Late death was observed in 6 vs. 3 patients (9/308, 2.9%). The actuarial rate of survival calculated over 14 years was 97% vs. 98%. Reoperation was performed in 5 vs. 9 patients (14/308, 4.5%). Risk factors for late death were age at repair (p = 0.01), and history of reoperation (p < 0.001). Transjunctional patching (p = 0.01) proved to be associated with late mortality only in patients repaired in 1972. Conclusions: Late survival was excellent, with a low incidence of reoperations in both groups of patients. The era of repair has a big influence on total and operative mortality, but has only a small impact on late mortality. Ongoing analysis of follow-up will possibly reveal subsequent changes with time.

Sucrose is more lipogenic than starch, and the extreme ingestion of sucrose induces adiposity and obesity. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of the eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) leaf extract (ELE) on adiposity due to dietary sucrose in rats. In addition, in this study, the effect of ELE on intestinal fructose absorption was also examined. Rats were fed a high-sucrose diet (75 % in calorie base) with or without ELE (10 g/kg diet) for 5 weeks. Body weight was lower in the rats receiving ELE than in the controls (342 (sd 37·9) v. 392 (sd 26·0) g (n 7); P<0·05). Furthermore, ELE resulted in decreases in the triacylglycerol concentrations in the plasma (1·44 (sd 0·448) v. 2·79 (sd 0·677) mmol/l (n 7); P<0·05) and liver (19·1 (sd 5·07) v. 44·1 (sd 16·28) μmol/g (n 7); P<0·05). In contrast, ELE did not show any significant effects in the rats fed a starch diet. When rats were orally given ELE 10 min before fructose administration, the intestinal fructose absorption, which was examined by measuring the elevated concentration of fructose in the portal vein at 30 min after the fructose administration, was significantly inhibited in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, in rats fed a high-fructose diet, the plasma and hepatic triacylglycerol concentrations were significantly decreased by ELE. These results indicate that ELE, which inhibits the intestinal fructose absorption, can suppress adiposity in rats that ingest large amounts of sucrose or fructose.

Tris(l, 2-benzodithio)- and tris(l, 2-ethylenedithio)-trimethylenemethane dication salts were synthesized for the purpose of using as an acceptor in the formation of charge-transfer (CT) complexes with some dianionic donors. In the CT complexes of these dications with hexacyanotrimethylenecyclopropane and tetrafluorotetracyanoquinodimethane dianions, in which the CT degree is albeit small, the spin-spin interaction between the cation radical and the anion radical was antiferro magnetic in the temperature range of 60–293 K, but changed to a ferromagnetic one in the lower temperature range till 15 K, the lowest temperature used in this experiment. This provides the first demonstration of ferromagnetic spin-spin interaction in purely organic/molecular CT complexes. It is conceivable that the ferromagnetic spin-spin interaction is caused by a“spin polarization”mechanism rather than a“CT configurational mixing”mechanism.
