An intra-band pattern-corrected decoupling vertical conducting wall is realized by dielectric substrate with conductor cladding on both side wall between two tightly spaced H-plane microstrip patches with λ0/20 edge-to-edge spacing. The wall is grounded and two symmetrical slots are etched on the vertical substrate. The measured results agree with the simulations, showing that the slotted vertical wall reduces the mutual coupling within the bandwidth to −30 dB and corrects the radiation beam tilt to be within −4.5° to 3° from the broadside direction. A gain reduction of 0.6 dB is observed compared to the gain without the slotted decoupling wall.

In this paper, a new path-loss model for electromagnetic wave in an indoor multipath environment is proposed based on matching coefficient, polarization matching factor, and normalized field intensity direction function. This model is called the Friis-extension (Friis-EXT) model, because it operates as the Friis model under certain conditions. In addition, in the modeling process of the path-loss in an indoor environment, the reflective surfaces in the environment and form of the antenna are considered. Afterwards, the path-loss data in an indoor corridor environment are measured, and the maximum error between the theoretical value and the measured data is <7.5 dB. Finally, the Friis-EXT model is compared with some other traditional models, and the results show that the Friis-EXT model is the best one that matches the measurement data.

A CO2-pulsed laser plasma deposition (CO2-PLD) system is installed and used for the quick synthesis of various hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) and zinc oxide (ZnO) nanostructures. Each part of the CO2-PLD system, such as focusing of laser beam on the target surface, sample holder, shutter, heater, type of the gas, and gas flow rate, can be easily controlled independently to fit different experimental conditions. After installation of the system, a series of experiments were conducted using hBN and ZnO targets. Scanning electron microscopy images showed that the entire surface (2 × 2 cm2) of the substrate is covered with the conical- and disk-shaped BN nanostructures and web-like highly dense ZnO nanowires, indicating a significantly short-time approach to grow mass product nanostructures. Raman spectroscopy identified the hexagonal structure of the synthesized samples.

We report on the use of in-situ small angle neutron scattering (SANS) technique to study the phase behavior of hydrogen confined in narrow pores of ultramicroporous carbon (UMC) with a very large surface area (2630 m2/g) and pore volume (1.3 cm3/g). The effect of pore size and pressure on hydrogen adsorbed on UMC at room temperature and pressures up to ∼200 bar were investigated. In a previous experiment, we have measured the density of adsorbed H2 gas in the nanopores and mesopores of polyfurfuryl alcohol-derived activated carbon (PFAC) by SANS technique. Here, a comparative SANS study between the UMC and PFAC was conducted in order to further investigate the densification of H2 as a function of pore size and pressure. Initial results suggest that the density of confined H2 in both UMC and PFAC is considerably higher than that of the bulk hydrogen gas. The density is systematically higher in the narrow pores and decreases with increasing pore size. These results clearly demonstrate the advantage of adsorptive storage over compressed gas storage and emphasize the greater efficiency of micropores over mesopores in the adsorption process, which can be used to guide the development of new carbon adsorbents tailored for maximum H2 storage capacities at near-ambient temperatures.

Using different pressures of nitrogen, N-doped ZnO nanorod arrays of various densities have been synthesized on quartz substrates by pulsed laser deposition techniques. The nanorods grow preferentially perpendicular to the quartz surface. X-ray diffraction patterns revealed some degradation of the crystal structure at elevated nitrogen pressures. High concentrations of nitrogen doping in ZnO nanorods were estimated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Raman scattering spectra confirmed the wurtzite structure of N-doped ZnO nanorods. A prototype sensor based on the N-doped ZnO nanorod arrays demonstrates a linear dependence of the conductivity with operating temperature and pressure of a test gas pollutant.

Few-layer hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanosheets were produced by using super-short-pulse laser produced plasma deposition techniques. Scanning electron microscopy, Energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, and micro-Raman spectroscopy were used to explore the morphologies, elemental concentrations and bond structures of the few-layer h-BN nanosheets. High-quality transparent few-layer h-BN nanosheet with the width up to more than 6 μm, and length more than 20 μm were successfully obtained. The change in contrast suggests that the number of atomic layers varies over the area. A comparative study between the obtained few-layer h-BN nanosheets and the previously synthesized few-layer graphene were also conducted in order to further investigate the properties of the promising 2-Dimention (2D) nanomaterials. Our results suggest that the development h-BN nanosheets has the potential to revolutionize the understanding of 2-D nanomaterials with delocalized electronsheralding a transformative technology with dramatic future implications.

Diamond-like carbon (DLC) films were synthesized using pulsed plasma sputtering deposition techniques. Microscope and Raman scattering techniques were used to study the effects of bias voltages on the properties of diamond-like carbon films. With d.c. bias voltage up to 1000V, the smooth and thick DLC films together with a few nanoparticles were obtained. An increase of the d.c. bias voltage up to 2000V yielded thicker DLC films but its surface became slightly rough and size of particles became large. The crystalline properties of these particles were studied. A tiny diamond peak from Raman spectrum was also observed.
