The product and direct role of the rssC gene of Serratia marcescens is unknown. For unraveling the role of the rssC gene, atomic force microscopy has been used to identify the surfaces of intact S. marcescens wild-type CH-1 cells and rssC mutant CH-1ΔC cells. The detailed surface topographies were directly visualized, and quantitative measurements of the physical properties of the membrane structures were provided. CH-1 and CH-1ΔC cells were observed before and after treatment with lysozyme, and their topography-related parameters, e.g., a valley-to-peak distance, mean height, surface roughness, and surface root-mean-square values, were defined and compared. The data obtained suggest that the cellular surface topography of mutant CH-1ΔC becomes rougher and more precipitous than that of wild-type CH-1 cells. Moreover, it was found that, compared with native wild-type CH-1, the cellular surface topography of lysozyme-treated CH-1 was not changed profoundly. The product of the rssC gene is thus predicted to be mainly responsible for fatty-acid biosynthesis of the S. marcescens outer membrane. This study represents the first direct observation of the structural changes in membranes of bacterial mutant cells and offers a new prospect for predicting gene expression in bacterial cells.

The interfacial regimes of cobalt/pentacene/cobalt (Co/Pc/Co) trilayers were emulated through the ultrathin pentacene/cobalt (Pc/Co) and cobalt/pentacene (Co/Pc) bilayers. Employing the magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) measurement, we found the coercivity of Co bottom film in a thickness of 3.4 nm experienced a slight reduction upon the adsorption of Pc molecules. For the bilayers prepared with reversed order of deposition, the Co film deposited on a 6.4 nm Pc layer showed no observable ferromagnetic order at room temperature until its thickness reached 3 nm. After the onset of magnetic order, the x-ray images acquired on Pc/Co revealed a complicated magnetization patterns comparing to those observed on Co/Pc bilayers. Because the spin-polarized carriers will interact with the environment along their transport path, the presence of a non-magnetic layer and the occurrence of complicated domain structures suggested the spin-polarized carriers would experience a greater disturbance on their spin coherence when crossing the Pc/Co interface.

Magnetite nanoparticles have been synthesized by thermal decomposition of hematite (Fe2O3) powder in the presence of high boiling point solvent. The mixture of hematite and 1- octadecene solvent was heated and stirred in nitrogen gas at the temperature of 320 °C for the desired time (∼2 to 28 hrs). The influence of the reaction time on transformation process was analyzed with X-ray diffraction (XRD), Mössbauer spectroscopy (MS), and magnetic measurements. XRD patterns show that the phase of intermediate was composed of spinel phase and corundum phase (α-Fe2O3). The 57Fe Mössbauer spectra show that the spinel phase originated from the magnetite particles. The structure transformation proportion of hematite to magnetite strongly depends on reaction times. After reflux for 28 hrs the hematite-magnetite transformation was complete. The mean crystallite size of pure phase of magnetite particles is about 40 nm. The saturation magnetization increases with the reaction time, which corresponds to an increase of concentration of magnetite in the samples. A pronounced feature of the Hc and σr/σs observed in samples is the steplike change which appears at 125 K and is characteristic of the Verwey transition. The hyperfine parameters of Mössbauer spectrum measured at low temperature also indicate that the Verwey phase transition occurs. In other words, the Verwey transition is an indication that the magnetite particles exactly grew up in the synthesized compounds. This thermal decomposition process provided a method to prepare pure magnetite as well as magnetite/hematite nanocomposites useful for various magnetic applications.
