The traditional design of laser drivers for inertial confinement fusion (ICF) is highly dependent on coherent laser light fields, which have significant advantages in achieving harmonic conversion and enhancing amplification efficiency. However, they also bring the core challenge of achieving uniform irradiation. This paper investigates the dynamic evolution process of uniform irradiation of multi-mode spatiotemporal light fields and analyzes the influence mechanism of spatiotemporal coherence on irradiation uniformity with different integration times. By balancing the relationship between the spatiotemporal coherence of the light field and uniform irradiation, we explore a possible scheme to alleviate the beam smoothing problem while satisfying the basic requirements of laser amplification and high-efficiency harmonic conversion. Based on this scheme, the overall architecture of the ICF laser driver is constructed.
This study implements blowing/suction control for aerofoil trailing-edge noise and systematically optimises blowing/suction angles and control locations within a Bayesian framework. Two distinct rounds were conducted for direct and sound-source-oriented coarse-grained Bayesian optimisations. In the direct optimisation, the mean overall sound pressure level of far-field noise is selected as the objective function. Optimal control parameters were obtained after 15 iterations, requiring 80 three-dimensional implicit large eddy simulations, and achieved a noise reduction of up to 3.7 dB. To reduce the substantial computational cost, a Gaussian process surrogate model was constructed using the sound source defined by multi-process acoustic theory. This enabled a second round of optimisation, termed sound-source-oriented coarse-grained Bayesian optimisation, which yielded comparable noise reduction. This refined approach exhibited low signal delay and rapid statistical convergence, which can significantly reduce both the computational cost per sampling and the iteration number. Consequently, the total computational cost was reduced to approximately one-sixth of the initial direct optimisation. Moreover, physical insights into noise reduction mechanisms were elucidated through dynamic mode decomposition (DMD), anisotropic invariant mapping and the analysis of source terms within the TNO model across several typical cases. The results indicate that the blowing-control case induces large-scale vortex shedding and enhances DMD mode energy and low-frequency noise emission. Furthermore, the suction control tends to disrupt coherent structures, reduce DMD mode energy and suppress radiated noise. Crucially, the suction control significantly decreases mean velocity gradients within the logarithmic layer and suppresses wall-normal Reynolds stresses, thereby considerably reducing TNO source intensity in this critical region. The optimal case exhibits superior performance across all metrics above, thus laying the foundation for the optimal control strategy. Additionally, the suction control facilitates attenuating the footprint of turbulent motions in wall-pressure fluctuations through pressure-velocity coherence analysis, hence promoting noise reduction. This work introduces a novel framework that integrates Bayesian optimisation with advanced noise diagnostic theory, and provides actionable insights for effective trailing-edge noise mitigation.
Weaning stress impacts piglet performance, prompting antimicrobial resistance concerns from antibiotic overuse. Clostridium butyricum-derived antimicrobial peptides (CBP) show potentials as a safe, effective antibiotic alternative. We initially characterized novel antimicrobial peptides within the CBP fraction, synthesizing and confirming their potent activity. This study evaluated CBP’s effects on intestinal health and growth performance of weaned piglets using a lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammation model. Fifty weaned Jinhua piglets (45 days, 9.95 ± 2.03 kg) were randomly allocated to control group (CON) and CBP group (n = 25), with five replicates each. Piglets in the CBP group were orally administered 3 mL of CBP daily (145.59 mg of total peptide) for 21 days, while the CON group received sterile water. During this period, CBP significantly improved growth performance, evidenced by increased average daily gain (P = 0.047) and reduced feed conversion ratio (P = 0.015), alongside a decrease in diarrhea incidence (P < 0.05). To further investigate the mechanism, a subset of animals from each group was challenged with LPS on day 21 to induce intestinal inflammation. Mechanistically, CBP enhanced intestinal barrier functions by optimizing crypt architecture and upregulating tight junction proteins expression (P < 0.05). CBP also exerted a potent anti-inflammatory effect, substantially reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines (P < 0.05) and suppressing NLRP3 inflammasome activation. Integrated microbiome and metabolomic analyses revealed CBP modulated the gut microbiota by increasing beneficial bacteria Lactobacillus and Coprococcus (P < 0.05) and elevating protective metabolites, including butyrate and hyocholic acid (P < 0.05). In conclusion, our findings demonstrate that CBP supplementation effectively promotes piglet growth and alleviates intestinal injury by regulating the gut microbiota and associated metabolic profiles. These effects are mediated through enhanced intestinal barrier functions and suppressed inflammation via the GPR43-NLRP3 pathway. This study provides strong evidence for CBP as a promising, safe alternative to antibiotics.
The properties of warm dense matter are crucial for understanding the physics underlying star formation, stellar evolution and inertial confinement fusion (ICF). We present soft X-ray measurements of a well-isolated warm dense plasma system produced by the collision of high-speed plasma jets in ICF-related experiments with double-cone targets. The colliding plasma was found to exhibit a structure consisting of a hotter inner core and a colder outer shell. The core region emits continuum Planckian radiation with an effective temperature of $45.53\pm 0.44\;\mathrm{eV}$. The outer shell, which has electron density of around ${10}^{23}\;{\mathrm{cm}}^{\hbox{--} 3}$ and temperature of $34.26\pm 2.12\;\mathrm{eV}$, introduces absorption lines of carbon ions superposed on the continuum spectra. Two-dimensional radiation hydrodynamic simulations and synthetic X-ray spectral images reveal the detailed physical processes determined with the experimental measurements.
How psychotic symptoms, depressive symptoms, cognitive deficits, and functional impairment may interact with one another in schizophrenia or bipolar disorder is unclear.
Methods
This study explored these interactions in a discovery sample of 339 Chinese, of whom 146 had first-episode schizophrenia and 193 had bipolar disorder. Psychotic symptoms were assessed using the Positive and Negative Symptom Scale; depressive symptoms, using the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale; cognitive deficits, using tests of processing speed, executive function, and logical memory; and functional impairment, using clinical assessments. Network models connecting the four types of variables were developed and compared between men and women and between disorders. Potential causal relationships among the variables were explored through directed acyclic graphing. The results in the discovery sample were compared to those obtained for a validation sample of 235 Chinese, of whom 138 had chronic schizophrenia and 97 had bipolar disorder.
Results
In the discovery and validation cohorts, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder showed similar networks of associations, in which the central hubs included ‘disorganized’ symptoms, depressive symptoms, and deficits in processing speed during the digital symbol substitution test. Directed acyclic graphing suggested that disorganized symptoms were upstream drivers of cognitive impairment and functional decline, while core depressive symptoms (e.g. low mood) drove somatic and anxiety symptoms.
Conclusions
Our study advocates for transdiagnostic, network-informed strategies prioritizing the mitigation of disorganization and depressive symptoms to disrupt symptom cascades and improve functional outcomes in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
Understanding the flow behaviour of wet granular materials is essential for comprehending the dynamics of numerous geological and physical phenomena, but remains a significant challenge, especially the transition of these flow regimes. In this study, we perform a series of rotating drum experiments to systematically investigate the dynamic observables and flow regimes of wet mono-dispersed particles. Two typical continuous flows including rolling and cascading regimes are identified and analysed, concentrating on the impact of fluid density and rotation speed. The probability density functions of surface angles, $\theta _{\textit{top}}$ and $\theta _{\textit{lo}w\textit{er}}$, reveal distinct patterns for these two flow regimes. A morphological parameter thus proposed, termed angle divergence, is used to characterise the rolling–cascading regime transition quantitatively. By integrating quantitative observables, we construct the flow phase diagram and flow curve to delineate the transition rules governing these regimes. Notably, the resulting nonlinear phase boundary demonstrates that higher fluid densities significantly enhance the likelihood of the system transitioning into the cascading regime. This finding is further supported by corresponding variations in flow fluctuations. Our results provide new insights into the fundamental dynamics of wet granular matter, offering valuable implications for understanding the complex rheology of underwater landslides and related phenomena.
Euthymic bipolar disorder (euBD) patients exhibit deficits in neurocognitive and social cognitive functioning compared to healthy controls (HCs). Our prior research has shown that the excitatory/inhibitory (E/I) imbalance in the default mode network (DMN) is linked to executive function in euBD. Neurocognitive impairments are associated with social cognition deficits in individuals with mental disorders. Given this connection, this study posits E/I imbalance within the DMN is associated with social cognition, with executive function as a mediator.
Methods
Seventy-five HCs and 49 euBD individuals were recruited. Using the emotion recognition task, Diagnostic Analysis of Nonverbal Accuracy 2-Taiwan version (DANVA-2-TW) and cognitive flexibility task, Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST), we assessed emotion recognition and prefrontal function. Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) measured metabolites in the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) and medial prefrontal cortex/anterior cingulate cortex (mPFC/ACC), quantifying excitatory glutamate+glutamine (Glx) and inhibitory GABA to calculate the E/I ratio.
Results
euBD patients showed poorer emotion recognition (p = 0.020) and poorer cognitive flexibility (fewer WCST categories completed, p = 0.002). A negative association was found between emotion recognition and the E/I ratio in the mPFC/ACC of the BD patients (r = −0.30, p = 0.034), which was significantly mediated by cognitive flexibility (Z = −2.657, p = 0.007).
Conclusion
The BD patients demonstrate deficits in emotion recognition, linked to an altered E/I balance in the prefrontal cortex, and the cognitive flexibility, a key aspect of executive function, mediates the impact of the E/I ratio on emotion recognition accuracy in euBD patients.
Yiyang Dahegu rice (YyDHG) is an important agricultural specialty of Yiyang County, Jiangxi Province, and it is also a significant component of the local cultural and economic development. In this experiment, 89 samples of Dahegu rice (DHG) were collected from Jiangxi Province, including 52 samples of YyDHG and 37 samples of DHG from other regions within Jiangxi Province (oDHG). Comprehensive analysis was conducted using polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, field phenotypic observation, population structure analysis and quality analysis. The results of variety identification indicated that the 89 samples actually comprised 52 distinct varieties, including 19 varieties of YyDHG. Population analysis has revealed rich genetic diversity among DHG varieties within Jiangxi Province, yet no significant subpopulation differentiation was observed between YyDHG and oDHG. Quality experiments demonstrated that YyDHG exhibits significant differences in appearance quality from oDHG, but no notable differences in milling quality or cooked taste and flavour. This suggests that the competitiveness of YyDHG in the market may not entirely depend on its unique quality characteristics, but rather more on its cultural value and brand effect. This experiment conducted a comprehensive analysis of the variety characteristics, genetic diversity and quality traits of YyDHG. Not only does it provide a scientific basis for the breeding and germplasm resource conservation of YyDHG, but it also holds positive implications for promoting the development of its industry.
Nutrition intervention is an effective way to improve flesh qualities of fish. The effect of feed supplementation with glutamate (Glu) on flesh quality of gibel carp (Carassius gibelio) was investigated. In trial 1, the fish (initial weight: 37.49 ± 0.08 g) were fed two practical diets with 0 and 2% Glu supplementation. In trial 2, the fish (37.26 ± 0.04 g) were fed two purified diets with 0 and 3% Glu supplementation. The results after feeding trials showed that dietary Glu supplementation increased the hardness and springiness of muscle, whether using practical or purified diets. Glu-supplemented diets increased the thickness and density of myofibres and collagen content between myofibres. Furthermore, Glu promoted muscle protein deposition by regulating the IGF-1-AKT-mTOR signalling pathway, and enhanced the myofibre hypertrophy by upregulating genes related to myofibre growth and development (mef2a, mef2d, myod, myf5, mlc, tpi and pax7α). The protein deposition and myofibre hypertrophy in turn improved the flesh texture. In addition, IMP content in flesh increased when supplementing Glu whether to practical or to purified diet. Metabolomics confirmed that Glu promoted the deposition of muscle-flavoured substances and purine metabolic pathway most functioned, echoed by the upregulation of key genes (ampd, ppat and adsl) in purine metabolism. The sensory test also clarified that dietary Glu improved the flesh quality by enhancing the muscle texture and flavour. Conclusively, dietary Glu supplementation can improve the flesh quality in this fish, which can further support evidence from other studies more generally that improve flesh quality of cultured fish.
An actively controllable cascaded proton acceleration driven by a separate 0.8 picosecond (ps) laser is demonstrated in proof-of-principle experiments. MeV protons, initially driven by a femtosecond laser, are further accelerated and focused into a dot structure by an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) on the solenoid, which can be tuned into a ring structure by increasing the ps laser energy. An electrodynamics model is carried out to explain the experimental results and show that the dot-structured proton beam is formed when the outer part of the incident proton beam is optimally focused by the EMP force on the solenoid; otherwise, it is overfocused into a ring structure by a larger EMP. Such a separately controlled mechanism allows precise tuning of the proton beam structures for various applications, such as edge-enhanced proton radiography, proton therapy and pre-injection in traditional accelerators.
This paper provides an overview of the current status of ultrafast and ultra-intense lasers with peak powers exceeding 100 TW and examines the research activities in high-energy-density physics within China. Currently, 10 high-intensity lasers with powers over 100 TW are operational, and about 10 additional lasers are being constructed at various institutes and universities. These facilities operate either independently or are combined with one another, thereby offering substantial support for both Chinese and international research and development efforts in high-energy-density physics.
In this chapter, we showed the broader application of Polyhedral Graphic statistics in other fields of science and briefly introduced research directions and topics that go beyond the polyhedral limitations of this method. Particularly, we show a research project in which graphical methods were used to analyze the structural pattern of a dragonfly wing. The result was then combined with machine learning methods to generate the structure of a wing of an airplane with enhanced out-of-plane performance. We also visited applications in the design of strut-and-tie structures for referenced concrete and its further application in designing multi-material structural components where the direction of the deposition of material is adjusted with respect to the internal force flow to maximize mechanical performance. The application of Polyhedral Graphic Statics was shown in the design of cellular solids and briefly discussed how particular subdividing of the force diagram can control the stress distribution in the system and the overall behavior of the structure from bending dominant to stretching dominant system. We also showed the application of the structures designed using Polyhedral Graphic Statics in self-healing structural components and 3D-printed structural systems with maximized surface area and minimized mass. Another important topic was the extension of the methods of Polyhedral Graphic Statics to non-polyhedral systems using disjointed force polyhedra. In the end, advanced topics related to completeness, being, and kinematics in Polyhedral Graphic Statics were discussed, which opened the door to many further research directions in this field.
Pemetrexed and immunotherapies (e.g., pembrolizumab) are approved for first-line maintenance (1LM) treatment of nonsquamous advanced/metastatic non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC), but real-world data on their use are limited. The objective of this study was to assess 1LM clinical outcomes, safety, and treatment patterns of immunotherapy versus immunotherapy+pemetrexed among patients with advanced/metastatic NSCLC from the EU4 (France, Germany, Italy, Spain)+UK.
Methods
Data from patients in the US, Canada, and EU4+UK with nonsquamous advanced/metastatic NSCLC without targetable mutations were collected via electronic case report form. Physician-identified patients (≥18 y) in the EU4+UK were eligible for this subgroup analysis if they achieved stable disease or complete or partial response with first-line platinum-based chemotherapy+immunotherapy (January 2019 to March 2021) and received 1LM immunotherapy or immunotherapy+pemetrexed. Patients were followed from index (1LM initiation) until last physician contact or death. Outcomes were overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), treatment patterns and duration, and adverse events.
Results
Among the selected 367 patients (male, 71.9%; mean±StDev age, 63.4±7.2 y; current/former smokers, 85.8%), 203 (55.3%) received immunotherapies, most commonly pembrolizumab (n=173; 85.2%), and 164 (44.7%) received immunotherapy+pemetrexed. Patients receiving immunotherapy had longer median adjusted OS and PFS compared to those receiving immunotherapy+pemetrexed (OS hazard ratio [HR]: 0.63; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.36, 0.90; PFS HR: 0.58; 95% CI: 0.38, 0.79). Patients receiving immunotherapy versus patients receiving immunotherapy+pemetrexed had longer median treatment duration (14.0 vs 10.3 mo; p<0.001) and were less likely to experience anemia (19.7% vs 33.5%; p<0.01). Results were similar in the overall study population.
Conclusions
In this real-world study, among the selected patients with nonsquamous advanced/metastatic NSCLC who achieved stable disease or complete or partial response with first-line therapy, the addition of pemetrexed to immunotherapy in 1LM did not appear to confer a clinical benefit. Identifying treatments that can improve clinical outcomes for these patients remains an area of unmet need.
This study aimed to elucidate the association between the platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and the risk of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children aged 6–14 based on National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data.
Method
We utilized data from NHANES 2013–2014 for analysis, with PLR as the independent variable and ADHD as the dependent variable. Weighted logistic regression was used to construct the relationship model. The subgroup analysis with stratification and adjustment for confounding factors was conducted to explore the association between PLR and ADHD risk in children aged 6–14. Finally, the restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis was carried out to explore the non-linear relationship between PLR and ADHD.
Results
The study included 1455 samples with 91 ADHD cases. A significant positive association (OR > 1, P < 0.05) was observed between PLR and ADHD risk in the multivariate weighted logistic regression model. Race and asthma status remarkably influenced the relationship between PLR and ADHD (P for interaction<0.05). The positive association between PLR and ADHD risk was particularly significant (P < 0.05) in boys, children born to mothers aged 20–29, and children with asthma. The RCS curve indicated a non-linear association between PLR and ADHD risk (P-non-linear = 0.0040), with OR > 1 when PLR ≥ 106.40.
Conclusion
Increased PLR elevated the risk of ADHD, especially in males, children born to mothers aged 20–29, and children with asthma, with 106.40 possibly being an effective threshold for PLR’s impact on ADHD risk.
We report a high-power ultra-narrow fiber-coupled diode laser using a Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter (FADOF) as an external cavity element. An external cavity suitable for both the fiber-coupled package and FADOF configuration has been proposed. Using a 87Rb-based FADOF as the frequency-selective element, we realized a 103 W continuous laser output with a uniform circular beam. The center wavelength was precisely locked at the D2 line of the Rb resonance, and the bandwidth was narrowed from 1.8 nm (free-running, full width at half maximum (FWHM)) to 0.013 nm (6.9 GHz, FWHM). The side mode suppression ratio reached 31 dB. Such diode lasers with precise wavelength and high spectral brightness have critical applications in many fields, such as high-energy gas laser pumping, spin-exchange optical pumping, Raman spectroscopy and nonlinear optics.
We consider linear-fractional branching processes (one-type and two-type) with immigration in varying environments. For $n\ge0$, let $Z_n$ count the number of individuals of the nth generation, which excludes the immigrant who enters the system at time n. We call n a regeneration time if $Z_n=0$. For both the one-type and two-type cases, we give criteria for the finiteness or infiniteness of the number of regeneration times. We then construct some concrete examples to exhibit the strange phenomena caused by the so-called varying environments. For example, it may happen that the process is extinct, but there are only finitely many regeneration times. We also study the asymptotics of the number of regeneration times of the model in the example.
Escherichia albertii is an emerging foodborne enteropathogen associated with infectious diarrhoea in humans. In February 2023, an outbreak of acute gastroenteric cases was reported in a junior high school located in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, China. Twenty-two investigated patients presented diarrhoea (22/22, 100%), abdominal pain (21/22, 95.5%), nausea (6/22, 27.3%), and vomiting (3/22, 13.6%). E. albertii strains were successfully isolated from anal swabs collected from six patients. Each isolate was classified as sequence type ST2686, harboured eae-β gene, and carried both cdtB-I and cdtB-II subtypes, being serotyped as EAOg32:EAHg4 serotype. A comprehensive whole-genome phylogenetic analysis revealed that the six isolates formed a distinct cluster, separate from other strains. These isolates exhibited minimal genetic variation, differing from one another by 0 to 1 single nucleotide polymorphism, suggesting a common origin from a single clone. To the best of our knowledge, this represented the first reported outbreak of gastroenteritis attributed to E. albertii outside of Japan on a global scale.
Persistent cognitive deficits and functional impairments are associated with bipolar disorder (BD), even during the euthymic phase. The dysfunction of default mode network (DMN) is critical for self-referential and emotional mental processes and is implicated in BD. The current study aims to explore the balance of excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitters, i.e. glutamate and γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), in hubs of the DMN during the euthymic patients with BD (euBD).
Method
Thirty-four euBD and 55 healthy controls (HC) were recruited to the study. Using proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS), glutamate (with PRESS sequence) and GABA levels (with MEGAPRESS sequence) were measured in the medial prefrontal cortex/anterior cingulate cortex (mPFC/ACC) and the posterior cingulate gyrus (PCC). Measured concentrations of excitatory glutamate/glutamine (Glx) and inhibitory GABA were used to calculate the excitatory/inhibitory (E/I) ratio. Executive and attentional functions were respectively assessed using the Wisconsin card-sorting test and continuous performance test.
Results
euBD performed worse on attentional function than controls (p = 0.001). Compared to controls, euBD had higher E/I ratios in the PCC (p = 0.023), mainly driven by a higher Glx level in the PCC of euBD (p = 0.002). Only in the BD group, a marginally significant negative association between the mPFC E/I ratio (Glx/GABA) and executive function was observed (p = 0.068).
Conclusions
Disturbed E/I balance, particularly elevated Glx/GABA ratio in PCC is observed in euBD. The E/I balance in hubs of DMN may serve as potential biomarkers for euBD, which may also contribute to their poorer executive function.
By the end of 2022, an estimated 108.4 million individuals worldwide experienced forced displacement. Identifying modifiable factors associated with the mental illness of refugees is crucial for promoting successful integration and developing effective health policies. This study aims to examine the associations between the changes in the diversity of social participation and psychological distress among refugees throughout the resettlement process, specifically focusing on gender differences.
Methods
Utilizing data from three waves of a longitudinal, nationally representative cohort study conducted in Australia, this study involved 2399 refugees interviewed during Wave 1, 1894 individuals interviewed during Wave 3 and 1881 respondents during Wave 5. At each wave, we assessed psychological distress and 10 types of social participation across 3 distinct dimensions, including social activities, employment and education. The primary analysis employed mixed linear models and time-varying Cox models. Gender-stratified analyses and sensitivity analyses were performed.
Results
Refugees engaging in one type or two or more types of social participation, compared with those not engaging in any, consistently had lower psychological distress scores (β = −0.62 [95% confidence interval (CI), −1.07 to −0.17] for one type of social participation; β = −0.57 [95% CI, −1.04 to −0.10] for two or more types of social participation) and a reduced risk of experiencing psychological distress (hazard ratio [HR] = 0.81 [95% CI, 0.65–0.99] for one type of social participation; HR = 0.77 [95% CI, 0.61–0.97] for two or more types of social participation) during the resettlement period. When stratifying the results by gender, these associations in the adjusted models only remained significant in male refugees. Moreover, three specific types of social participation, namely sporting activities, leisure activities and current employment status, were most prominently associated with a reduced risk of psychological distress.
Conclusions
The findings of this cohort study suggest that social participation was consistently associated with reduced risks of psychological distress among male refugees during resettlement. These findings highlight the significance of promoting meaningful social participation and interaction may be an effective strategy to improve the mental health of refugees and facilitate their successful integration into society, especially among male refugees.
